  • “Alcohol Is Just Like Drugs — It Should Be Banned Too,” 5ch Split Down the Middle

On 5ch’s Livegalileo (“Nandemo Jikkyo”) board, a post arguing “alcohol is no different from drugs, so it might as well be banned” sparked a wide-ranging debate. Opponents pointed to America’s Prohibition era (1920–33), which failed after fueling bootlegging and black markets, while supporters countered that “if you fix what caused it to fail back then, it could work this time.” The thread also touched on gradually curbing demand through tax hikes and tighter rules the way cigarettes have been handled, what to do about cooking sake, and whether home brewing should be allowed — with opinions split over where exactly to draw the line between banning, regulating, and leaving things as they are.

People bring this up sometimes, but if something failed, I'd think you're supposed to try again and get it right — yet somehow with Prohibition it's always "it failed once, so never again."

Why is it only Prohibition that gets "it failed, so don't ever try it again"?

Just treat it like cigarettes. Look at where smoking is now — prices went up, and smokers ended up looking like this lol ↓

Do the exact same thing with alcohol. Turn bars that serve it into cage-like holding pens, and isolate the people drinking inside. When they want to leave, measure their breath, and the key-lock only releases if they're under a certain level. Not a ban — quarantine.

Exactly. Keep it at a level where you can still drink if you really want to, but it's not something you'd casually reach for. Do that for ten years and drinking culture will probably decline the same way smoking did.

The reason Prohibition is called a failure comes down to two kinds of backlash: backlash from taking away a uniquely irreplaceable form of stress relief, and backlash from cutting off a funding source. The latter is like any vested-interest problem — you'd probably still see assassinations and the like over it today. As for the former, alcohol isn't a uniquely irreplaceable outlet anymore. Prohibition itself was a phenomenon specific to its era, so it's unlikely to play out the same way again.
    85AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:26

Follow "it's not irreplaceable, so it's fine to regulate" far enough and you end up with those in power regulating whatever suits them.

Honestly, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling — all of it could probably be banned. There's no shortage of healthy hobbies out there. In moderation, none of it seems that bad to me, as a way to blow off steam after grinding through daily life. But the human brain just can't hit "save"…
    93AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:28

Just raise the tax on gambling too. If pachinko addicts were working instead of playing pachinko, tax revenue would go up anyway — so claw that money back from the pachinko industry instead.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The debate over whether to prohibit alcohol traces back to America’s Prohibition era (1920–33), when banning alcohol led to widespread bootlegging and turned it into a funding source for gangs — ultimately ending in failure. What divided the thread was how to read that failure: as “proof it should never be attempted again,” or as “something that could succeed this time if the causes of the original failure are eliminated.” Some suggested applying the same approach that has steadily cut cigarette consumption over the long run — tax hikes and tighter regulation — to alcohol as well, though alcohol differs from tobacco in that it’s relatively easy to brew at home and includes everyday necessities like cooking sake, so the same tactics may not transfer directly. Calls for tighter regulation also run into the problem of where legitimate public health policy ends and simply banning whatever one personally dislikes begins — a divide that surfaces again and again throughout the thread, with no agreement in sight on how far is too far.

  • Goto Hana’s “I’ll Probably Get Scammed Into Buying a Vase Someday” Remark Sparks 5ch Reaction: “Does This Joke Still Land in the Reiwa Era?”

In Hello! Project’s daily “Hello! Q&A” feature, Hana Goto was asked what she considers cute about herself and answered, “For better or worse, I trust people, so I figure I’ll probably get talked into buying a vase myself someday, lol” — a remark that quickly became a talking point on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. “Getting talked into buying a vase” is an old Japanese expression for so-called “spiritual sales” scams run by religious groups (con artists pressuring believers into buying overpriced “spiritually powerful” vases or seals). The thread saw posters invoking Junko Sakurada, an idol who faced similar rumors back in the 1980s, alongside surprised comments wondering whether the joke “still lands in the Reiwa era.” At the same time, the remark also pulled the conversation toward the broader social fallout from the former Unification Church, so the thread ranged from lighthearted banter to more topical exchanges.

    59Anonymous2026/09/23 (Wed) 12:37:53.60
For those of us now in our late 20s/30s, the Unification Church issue was probably kept pretty well 'under control' media-wise throughout our childhood and teenage years.

    Background and Talking Points

“Getting talked into buying a vase” is a long-standing piece of Japanese slang mocking so-called “spiritual sales” (reikan shōhō) scams, in which people are pressured into buying overpriced vases or seals claimed to carry spiritual power. Several celebrities — most famously Junko Sakurada — were the subject of similar rumors decades ago. The phrase drew renewed attention in recent years after the 2022 shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe brought the ties between the former Unification Church and Japanese politicians into wide public view, and several posters in the thread said that incident was when they first learned where the joke actually came from. Goto Hana’s comment was simply a self-deprecating joke about her own trusting personality, but reactions on 5ch split between people enjoying it purely as wordplay and others tying it directly to the real-world scandal — underscoring a generational gap in how the word “tsubo” (vase) is understood today. Note: comments containing political arguments or mockery of specific groups have been left out of this article.

The NBA's local broadcast rights fees are down 20–50% across the board as a matter of course, and for some teams it's more than a 50% cut
Just looking at 13 teams: Clippers down 47%, Grizzlies down 66%, Thunder down 57%, Spurs down 51%
But the NBA can absorb it because its new $77 billion national TV deal covers roughly $142 million per team per year
MLB has the same problem — the real difference isn't "whether local TV is collapsing," it's "how much of that hole national rights fees and DTC (direct-to-consumer) can fill"
    240AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:39
    Re: #228
But that national rights deal just had its SNB (Sunday Night Baseball) package cut in half despite viewership going up, so the hole might just keep growing
    245AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:47
    Re: #240
That's conflating two different things: "SNB's rights fee dropped" and "MLB's national broadcast revenue got cut in half"

The old ESPN deal was $550 million a year, but starting in 2026 it's ESPN at roughly $550M + NBC at roughly $200M + Netflix at roughly $50M — so overall, national rights revenue actually comes out to around $800M

What's more, the 2025 ESPN version of SNB averaged 1.8 million viewers, up 21% year over year, and the 2026 NBC version of SNB is averaging 2.7 million — the highest since 2007

So you can make the point that "viewership went up but SNB's standalone rights value went down," but you can't really say "so the national-rights hole is going to keep growing"

If anything, for MLB the real question is whether DTC can fill the hole left by the old RSN revenue — national broadcast rights actually increased in total value under the 2026 deal
    248AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:51
    Re: #245
To fill the hole from that cut, MLB sold off one of its revenue streams to ESPN
The SNB broadcast rights themselves are still half of what they were

    Re: #245
When I say the hole could widen, I mean the possibility that in three years FOX and TBS could see the same kind of steep drop SNB did

    Background and Talking Points

Takagi frequently weighs in on managerial personnel moves as a sports-newspaper commentator, and this time he laid out his views on YouTube amid a wave of offseason managerial changes. Within the thread, opinions split over Miyamoto Shinya’s reputation as a coach, and an anecdote attributed to player Yamada Tetsuto was also raised — though it’s worth noting these are all secondhand accounts, not official comments from the players themselves. As for Ogata Koichi’s handling of the team during his Hiroshima Carp days, there was in fact a real incident in the past where his use of physical discipline with players became an issue within the organization, so it’s not a subject that lends itself to simple praise. By the thread’s later stages, the conversation had shifted to MLB’s local broadcast-rights revenue structure — a notable turn from NPB managerial debate to broader questions about the business side of the sport as a whole.

  • Metroidvania All-Star Lineup Sparks Endless Pushback on 5ch: ‘Hollow Knight Isn’t Soulslike’

A thread titled “I put together a lineup of Metroidvania masterpieces, any objections?” took off on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Posters weighed in on staple titles like Ori, Hollow Knight, Nine Sols, and Metroid Dread, but pushback quickly followed, with comments like “Nine Sols is weak as a Metroidvania” and “Hollow Knight isn’t Soulslike.” The discussion spiraled further into a debate over the very origin of the term “Metroidvania” — whether it’s “a word foreigners coined to look down on Japanese games” or just an innocent portmanteau. Posters also traded views on Silksong’s difficulty and asked about which titles are available on consoles.

Konami's reviving the original Castlevania, but they're just outsourcing the whole thing to an indie studio — at this point Bloodstained feels more like the "real" Castlevania.

I'd want to squeeze Salt and Sanctuary in there somewhere too — it was the true pioneer of "Soulsvania" before Hollow Knight.
Also, for the Ender series, shouldn't you pick Lilies over Magnolia?

It's a term foreigners coined to look down on Japanese games,

Wasn't it that people started calling these games "Castlevania-like," then someone pushed back with "no wait, Metroid was the real pioneer of exploration-based side-scrollers," and that's how "Metroidvania" came about? That's why there are surprisingly few games that are actually "Metroid-like."

Either way, it's not like the name is meant to mock the genre the way people claim "JRPG" does.

Metroid is the true originator of this genre,

    Re: #71
"Why it's fun" and "who it's fun for" differ from person to person and game to game,
and genre labels are useful as a rough sorting tool for that.

"As long as it's fun" doesn't help much if you hand someone a BL game that's a blast for yaoi-loving fujoshi but not for them.

    Background and Key Points

“Metroidvania” is a colloquial term for exploration-based side-scrolling action games, said to be a portmanteau of Nintendo’s “Metroid” and Konami’s “Castlevania” (particularly “Symphony of the Night”). It started out as fan-community slang, and only became an established genre name relatively recently. The thread floated the theory that it’s “a term foreigners coined to look down on Japanese games,” but this is just one persistent bit of folklore, and its truth has never been settled. In fact, several replies in the thread pushed back on that very theory, making the term’s origin itself a point of dispute. It was also pointed out that most games labeled “Metroidvania” actually lean toward Castlevania-style design, while games truly in the Metroid mold (exploration-focused, light on RPG elements) are a minority — highlighting a mismatch between the genre label and what it actually describes. What’s easy for readers to miss is that the term isn’t just “Metroid-like” — it’s a compound word pointing to the fusion of two distinct lineages.

    Background and Talking Points

Ostriches are large birds said to run at speeds of around 70 km/h, and a kick from one can cause serious injury, so the standard advice when spotting one is not to approach and to move away quickly. At the time of this article, it hadn’t been determined whether this was an animal that escaped from a breeding facility or one kept privately. In the thread, some users posted footage apparently filmed of an ostrich in the prefecture in the past, suggesting it might be the same animal — though that remains speculation. While multiple sightings had been reported, no photos from the scene had circulated as of posting, which likely explains the joking comparisons to extinct birds like the moa and elephant bird, reflecting just how few details have been confirmed at this stage.

A thread titled “Bipolar NEET (27), it’s been 4 days since Mom vanished” on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board drew a wave of replies. The poster, who says they hold a disability certificate for bipolar disorder and live with their mother while chipping in for living expenses despite being a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), explained that their mother left on a trip with the poster’s older brother and hasn’t come home in four days. The thread ranged from the state of the house — trash and dirty dishes piling up — to arguments over whether the poster had actually gone to Hello Work (Japan’s public employment office), and on to talk of calling the police and whether welfare benefits were even an option. Commenters alternated between teasing the poster for having been “abandoned” and the poster’s own deadpan pushback.

    Background and Key Points

The “certificate” (手帳, techō) the poster refers to appears to be Japan’s Mental Disability Health and Welfare Certificate, issued to people with psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder. It grants holders things like medical-expense subsidies and tax breaks, but it’s an entirely separate system from eligibility for welfare (生活保護, seikatsu hogo — Japan’s public assistance program). Welfare eligibility is assessed on the income and assets of the whole household, so if a family member you live with earns enough, you can be disqualified even with zero income of your own — which is likely the mechanism behind the poster’s claim of “not being able to get welfare.” Reactions in the thread mixed criticism of the poster’s neglect of housework with sympathy for a situation shaped by mental illness, producing a more nuanced response than a simple “stop being lazy” pile-on. It’s also worth noting that no information beyond the poster’s own account is available about why the mother left or when she plans to return, so none of it can be verified from the thread alone.

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after someone posted an image claiming a certain title had surpassed 1.7 million copies sold. Commenters quickly pointed out that the number in the image seemed to shrink a little with each repost, fueling suspicion it might be an AI-generated fake. The fact that no official sales figures have been announced even a week after launch is also being read as a telling silence. As is tradition, the thread spiraled into the usual Nintendo-vs-PlayStation fan slap-fight, with plenty of posts comparing the number to sales of past hit titles.

Basically, a game that can only brag about sales numbers instead of whether it's actually fun is 100% trash.
Back when JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle came out, plenty of people responded to "this isn't fun" with "it sold 500k copies!"
Just curious — did the people who said ASB was boring also happen to be part of those 500k buyers?
Does that somehow make it good, then?

Classic pattern: about a year later they'll quietly slip out some embarrassingly low official figure

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Talk about real-world game sales figures comes up constantly on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, and numbers from images with no official backing often take on a life of their own — this time, too, some suspected the source image might be AI-generated. Hardware makers and publishers tend to eagerly announce round-number milestones and strong results, while sitting on unfavorable numbers until financial results are released — and the thread’s “read between the lines on the silence” reaction reflects that well-known industry pattern. Note that replies naming and criticizing specific X (formerly Twitter) accounts, or containing language disparaging individual posters, have been excluded from this article.

  • New Hire’s Phone Blunder Sparks “Blame the Training” Debate on 5ch — “Hello, This Is XX Battery Factory”

A thread about new employees botching phone calls has been buzzing on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. Posters shared story after story of new hires mixing up the company name — like answering “Hello, this is XX Battery Factory” — or getting flustered over the right way to speak while putting a caller on hold. The thread split into two camps: those who saw these blunders as a matter of the new hire’s own aptitude, and those who blamed company culture for putting rookies on phone duty from day one without proper training. The discussion gradually expanded into broader workplace issues — unpaid overtime, how new-hire training should be run, and how harassment complaints get handled.

Our ace employee checked in on a new hire who was falling behind schedule, and the new hire felt it was too intense… so they reported it to HR as harassment. Then the incompetent manager who took that complaint at face value ended up driving the ace out of the department — and the combo of that idiot and that useless manager is basically wrecking the whole department, lol.
Now that people have learned the worst possible lesson — that crying "harassment" shuts management up even when you're the one who's behind — the place is churning out garbage employees and it's basically over.

    Background and Discussion Points

This thread isn’t based on any particular statistics or resignation-reason data — it’s simply 5ch users sharing their own new-hire-era experiences. Although framed around “Gen Z,” the theme of new hires fumbling phone calls is one that’s been talked about across generations for a long time, not something unique to this cohort. Within the thread, opinions were split fairly evenly between “it’s the company’s fault for not training them” and “even a new hire should use common sense,” so it doesn’t end up as one-sided Gen Z bashing. Another notable feature is that toward the end, the discussion broadens from new-hire training into workplace management issues in general — unpaid overtime, how harassment complaints get handled — a wider scope of debate than the “reasons for quitting” framing in the title alone would suggest.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (“Nandemo Jikkyo G”) thread “[Sad News] Gen Z’s Reasons for Quitting Have Reached Their Limit.”

  • Inoue Reon: “The Night My Joining Was Announced, Danbara Ruru Sent Me a LINE Message” — Even Though We’d Had Zero Contact Before

Juice=Juice’s Inoue Reon has revealed that on the night her joining the group was announced, she got a welcome message on LINE from Danbara Ruru. The two had barely spoken before Inoue joined, but that message brought them close, and they’re now on nickname terms, with Inoue calling her “Ruru-chan.” Danbara herself has looked back on it, saying she was “happy to finally have a same-age groupmate,” reflecting on a stretch of time when she didn’t have peers her own age. The thread was full of warm reactions to the pair’s bond, along with a lively side debate over the hypothetical: “What if Inoue had ended up in a different group?”

    1AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:33
Rein: There's a lot, but honestly, it's the fact that Ruru-chan messaged me on LINE the very night my joining Juice=Juice was announced. Before I joined, we really hadn't talked at all — we had basically no connection — but she kept telling me how happy she was that I was joining… Now I call her "Ruru-chan," but at first I called her "Danbara-san," and even fans would ask me, "Wait, you still call her Danbara-san?" I'm the type who really wants a same-age groupmate, and Ruru-chan already had various same-age, same-batch pairings with other members, each with its own special meaning to her — so the fact that she welcomed me into that circle too still means so much to me, and honestly she's helped me so much ever since. Being with her isn't just reassuring, it's just… easy. Comfortable.
Ruru: It is easy. There's less to overthink. When I joined Juice=Juice, I had a same-age member who joined with me, but she graduated after less than two years, so I spent a long stretch surrounded by older members. That was fun too, of course, but looking back, there were so many moments where I really missed having someone the same age, a fellow "batch-mate"… So when Rei-chan joined and I realized we were the same age, I was thrilled! I was like, "Same age! Same batch!" — even though we'd basically never talked, I just unilaterally decided we were kind of batch-mates (laughs). I probably came on too strong and scared her a little, but I was genuinely so happy she ended up joining, and even now, having someone like a same-age batch-mate really helps me get through each day.
    5AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:35
Inoue: What a reliable same-age friend.

    Inoue: Eh, um…

    16AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:16
When Kobushi Factory's disbandment was decided and every member besides Inoue was set to retire, Inoue reportedly started hanging out a lot in other groups' dressing rooms. When the other members teased her about it, she apparently said, "Well, I'm about to be all alone soon."
    17AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:17
She says she "observes" people first, but the person being observed usually notices they're being watched — which just makes them more guarded, if anything.

    26AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:37
If I were the one deciding where Rei Rei would transfer to, given the situation at the time, I'd guess the candidates were Morning Musume ("Musume.") or Juice=Juice (JJ). But Musume. would've caused all sorts of problems with the group's internal skill balance, so I think it ends up being JJ anyway.
    33AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:41
If she'd joined Angerme, her same-age member Sasaki Rikako wouldn't have quit yet, and the two of them would probably be the group's twin aces by now.
    58AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:46
If it weren't for Yanamin, Manakan, and Rei Rei, Danbara probably would've already quit by now.
    59AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:46
If she'd joined Angerme, having Kamikoryo, Inoue, and Sasaki together would've made for a seriously glamorous lineup.
    60AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:47
    Angerme disbands
Gets folded into "Nagano Juice" (a pun combining Juice=Juice with Nagano Prefecture's famous apple juice)
    Hayashi Nia finally gets a same-year batch-mate
    61AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:49
Back then, Juice=Juice's manager had been poached from Nice Girl, so Angerme or Musume. were never really on the table.
    62AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:56
Maybe Danbara was struggling too, back then.

    Background and Talking Points

It’s already widely known that Inoue Reon transferred to Juice=Juice after Kobushi Factory’s 2021 disbandment, and thread post #16 is written with that background in mind. In Hello! Project, when members transfer or groups get reshuffled, it’s common for members without an existing “same batch” bond to have to build new relationships from scratch — and Danbara Ruru, having lost her own same-age groupmate to early graduation not long after joining Juice=Juice herself, is described here as having reached out strongly to Inoue as a result. What really got the thread going wasn’t confirming those facts so much as the hypothetical “what if Inoue had been assigned to a different group” — with names like Tsubaki Factory and Angerme coming up as candidates. It’s worth noting for readers, though, that this is purely fan speculation, not anything from an official announcement or the members themselves. There were also replies touching on how Danbara went from calling Inaba Manaka “-san” to “-chan,” which, read alongside the Inoue-Danbara relationship at the center of this piece, rounds out a picture of how the psychological distance between members shifted over time.

Figured the CS TBS channel might be running some kind of coverage, but nope, BTS was dancing. What even is this channel.

    Congrats!

Is there an archive of this somewhere I can watch?

    Isn't it on U-NEXT?
    34AnonymousSep 23, 2026 08:50
Why isn't this on terrestrial TV?
Men's gymnastics gets live broadcasts even when they don't win gold.

    Re: #34
Women's volleyball earned a permanent terrestrial broadcast slot at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and the Matsudaira Japan men's volleyball team did the same in 1972.
For a similar reason, men's gymnastics has a permanent "seeded" broadcast spot, but women's gymnastics doesn't.

Having a major corporate sponsor behind you matters too — women's gymnastics runs on a club-by-club basis, and none of them seem to have especially heavy backing.

If we're going down that road, it's way weirder that high school baseball gets live coverage every year starting from the regional qualifiers.

The men have Hashimoto and Oka — Olympic gold medalists who are among the best in the world.

She seems like someone who could be way more popular.
The gymnastics world needs to make better use of her.

The treatment is completely different from when Rie Tanaka was around.
What exactly is the difference, I wonder.

Wasn't she against leotards on principle? She was wearing one just fine though.

    Re: #64
Probably because it's the official team uniform.
    67AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:14
Oh, she's the one who treats leotards like a mortal enemy?
But even the athletes themselves can't agree on this.
It's not like the country forces every woman to wear one — if you hate it, you can quit, or just do your own thing.
If she's not competing in baggy shorts at international meets too, isn't that a bit hypocritical?

    Re: #67
I've also heard it's more that the shorts were made for girls who quit the sport because they hate leotards, and she wears them for promotional purposes — so which is it?

Also, for competitions like this, the maker supplying the uniforms probably has a contract with the JOC or the governing body, so athletes likely can't just wear whatever they personally want anyway.

Hopes are high for the team event too

    Background and Talking Points

Aiko Sugihara drew attention as far back as her high school days — she even got an NHK feature — but after retiring from competition once, she went through a long stretch of failing to establish herself among Japan’s top gymnasts. It was only in her late twenties, after winning the All-Japan Championships and an individual-event gold at the World Championships, that she finally claimed the individual all-around title at this Asian Games. What got the thread talking was the gap between men’s gymnastics, which gets live terrestrial broadcasts, and women’s gymnastics, which gets far less coverage. Commenters pointed to “permanent broadcast rights” — like the ones women’s volleyball earned at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and men’s volleyball earned in 1972 — as evidence that past achievements and the backing (or lack thereof) of major corporations shape broadcast slots, and that women’s gymnastics reportedly lacks that kind of backing. There was also debate over uniforms — leotards versus shorts — a topic that’s easy to misread if you don’t know that athletes representing Japan can’t simply choose their own attire.
