  • Study: Music You Heard at 17 Sticks With You for Life — 5ch: ‘More Like 14’

“The music you listened to at 17 carries the deepest meaning of your entire life” — an article from Nazology introducing this survey result went viral on 5ch’s Science News+ board. The finding is rooted in what psychologists call the “reminiscence bump,” the tendency for memories from adolescence and young adulthood to stick especially strongly. The thread quickly filled with pushback on the age itself (“17 is too late,” “more like around 14”), along with skepticism toward the methodology itself (“they only surveyed people 16 and older,” “isn’t a memory-based survey bound to be inaccurate?”). At the same time, plenty of posters shared their own nostalgic memories of songs they discovered around age 17.

“The music you heard at 17” carries the deepest meaning in your life

Have you ever had the experience of hearing a song you listened to obsessively in your youth, and having the scenes from back then vividly come flooding back the instant you heard it?

In psychology, personal memories are known to skew heavily toward adolescence and young adulthood — a phenomenon called the “reminiscence bump.”

I barely listened to music as a teenager.
All the various Western music I listened to in my 20s, I still listen to now.

There are people like Re: #2 and Re: #3 in this thread, so yeah, the median really is 17.
    3AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:43
    Isn't 17 too late?
There's memorable music from kindergarten and elementary school too.
Feels like this is just pandering to some Western preconception.

Music I heard around 17 all felt kind of lame to me.

I got more into music, and started actually following it, after turning 20.

Maybe it's also because the singer (or group) behind a song you loved has passed away, so you can never hear anything new from them again.

Around 17 I only chose to listen to modern/contemporary composers like Stravinsky, Bartók, Schoenberg.
Now that I'm older, I prefer the Barry Gray soundtracks for Stingray and Thunderbirds that I listened to when I was even younger.
I wonder if I get even older, will it end up being nursery rhymes?

This might actually apply to me.
Back in high school, one of Tunnels' TV shows had a segment called 'Soul Tunnels'
where regular participants danced along to '70s disco and soul.
It was packed with Black music and dance music, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
After turning 20 I started buying all kinds of Western CDs at Tower Records, but it was almost entirely Black music and dance music
    — I listened to jazz, funk, hip-hop, house, techno, Latin, and so on.
I feel like I was pretty heavily influenced by it.

But thinking about it now, maybe I was influenced by songs I heard even earlier, as a kid.
Back in elementary school they were rerunning Journey to the West, and I loved Godiego's 'Monkey Magic.'
That song has a real funk vibe to it.
Maybe it's because I got doused in funk by Monkey Magic that 'Soul Tunnels' hit me so hard.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The reminiscence bump has long been recognized in psychology as the phenomenon where, when people look back on their lives in old age, memories from their late teens through early twenties are recalled disproportionately often — a pattern confirmed repeatedly in research on music and autobiographical memory. The survey cited in the thread covered roughly 2,000 people worldwide, and according to post 13, the median age came out to 17. However, the survey appears to have only included respondents aged 16 and up, meaning it was designed in a way that couldn’t capture anyone citing songs from early childhood in the first place — a real weakness that several posters in the thread pointed out. It’s also worth noting that this kind of survey relies on self-reported, memory-based data, and the very nature of the reminiscence bump — which makes people prone to romanticizing their youth when answering — may itself be reinforcing the results.

  • My Coworker’s Body Odor Is Brutal — 5ch: ‘The Kind That Lingers in the Room After He Leaves’

A thread on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board described a coworker whose body odor is so strong it lingers in the room even after they’ve left. Posters speculated about the cause — sebum, dirty clothes, or simply not bathing — while the original poster explained that even the boss won’t step in, saying it’s hard to say something since the coworker means no harm. The thread expanded into discussion of how to actually bring up body odor, its possible links to depression or neurodivergent traits, and even the existence of a real condition called “fish odor syndrome,” with posters offering a wide range of opinions on just how hard it is to say something.

Not bathing can actually be a symptom of depression,

Telling someone they smell is incredibly hard to say out loud.
Your only real option is to write it on paper: "I know you're a good person and I'm sorry, but the smell is really bad, so please do something about it," and just leave it somewhere.
Do it gently and diplomatically, since there's a chance he'll snap back with "I don't smell!"

    Background and Key Issues

Workplace body-odor problems are difficult to handle precisely because it’s so hard to raise the issue directly with the person involved, and that tension sits at the center of this thread. While most posters speculated about lifestyle-related causes — sebum, alcohol metabolism, infrequent laundry — medical conditions like “fish odor syndrome” (trimethylaminuria), a metabolic disorder that produces body odor regardless of hygiene, genuinely exist, meaning some cases can’t be explained by the person’s cleanliness habits alone. Posters also proposed indirect approaches, like asking about someone’s health or personal worries, as a way around the awkwardness of a direct comment — reflecting the workplace-specific concern that a blunt remark could be taken as harassment. At the same time, some comments casually linked the cause to neurodivergence, but that remains pure speculation, and it’s worth noting that drawing a simplistic connection between body odor and neurodivergent traits risks being misleading.

  • VW’s EV strategy hits turbulence: German forum reacts to falling profit margins

In Wolfsburg, the home turf of Volkswagen (VW), the growing popularity of EVs is ironically turning into a headwind for the business, it seems. According to a report from German news site golem.de, while demand for gasoline cars is falling, the profit margin per EV is lower than for gasoline cars, squeezing VW’s earnings. The topic, shared on the German-language Lemmy community c/dach, drew a wide range of reactions — from firsthand accounts of driving 700–1,600 km in an EV, to gripes about eight-month delivery waits after ordering, to jabs at confusing model names like the ‘ID. Polo.’

People say 'there's no way you can drive round-trip from Flensburg to Garmisch every day,' but I saw someone elsewhere basing their entire complaint about EV range on one 600 km trip they take once a year (through a snowstorm, apparently).
    13Anonymous2026-09-22 15:07
On our 700 km vacation trip, total charging time was just 36 minutes (two 18-minute stops). Both times, charging finished before we even got back to the car. Total electricity cost: 36 euros, including topping back up to 80% at the end.
    14Anonymous2026-09-22 12:46
At the end of the day, people can just keep moving the goalposts to whatever conclusion they already wanted — 'I don't need an EV' or 'I only want that one specific car.'
    15Anonymous2026-09-22 16:19
On a roughly 1,300 km trip to Cornwall, I charged 3 times, each under 30 minutes. Honestly, I don't get what everyone's so worked up about…
    10Anonymous2026-09-22 11:46
Also, wasn't the e-Up actually selling pretty well? And yet they discontinued it anyway…
    16Anonymous2026-09-22 14:00
From what I saw on Wikipedia, order windows only opened once every 12–18 months, and only for two months at a time — after that the production slots filled up right away.

And besides, there's no way VW would ever release a budget car (let alone a budget EV!) — that would cut into their per-unit profit!
    19Anonymous2026-09-22 11:22
It says 'that includes the ID. Polo, Cupra Raval, Škoda Epiq, and the ID. Cross from the so-called "urban electric car family"'… but come on, if those AREN'T the models actually selling, I feel like I can guess why they're not.

I genuinely had to reread that list three times…
    25Anonymous2026-09-22 12:24
If something's actually selling well, it just doesn't fit the 'doom and gloom' narrative. So it got cut!
    11Anonymous2026-09-22 13:23
It says 'That said, since profit per EV is lower than a comparable gasoline car, this shift will actually shrink VW's earnings.'

Which is exactly why VW keeps doubling down on gasoline cars.
    12Anonymous2026-09-22 10:19
Well, Chinese automakers saw this coming and moved on it ages ago. It's just our domestic industry that didn't read the writing on the wall. It's a real headache for people who actually want a new car right now too — I ordered an EV and was told it'd be an 8-month wait, and dealers don't exactly have lots full of finished stock either.
    17Anonymous2026-09-22 14:58
Somebody, please, think of the poor shareholders
    20Anonymous2026-09-22 15:18
Ha, funny enough I read that exact post while I was still waiting on my fries even though the car said charging was already done and it was ready to go. Never been an issue for me — though admittedly I haven't driven through a snowstorm yet.
    21Anonymous2026-09-22 16:57
1,600 km to Sweden, 3 charging stops one way. Honestly, the ones complaining are probably just 'Diesel Dieter' types (a mocking nickname for the stereotypical diesel-loving, no-nonsense driver) who hate spending time with their family and would rather grind through 13 hours of nonstop driving just to get it over with.
    22Anonymous2026-09-22 11:42
Toyota's EV model names are even more chaotic. At this point I have to assume they're doing it on purpose.

    Toyota Urban Cruiser
    Toyota bZ4X
    Toyota bZ4X Touring
    Toyota C-HR+
    27Anonymous2026-09-22 13:52
Toyota should just merge with a monitor manufacturer already and start naming cars 'bZ4X3261UHSCP-W.' And just to be clear, don't confuse that with the 'bZ4X3261UISCP-W' — a completely redesigned model coming a year later with totally different internals — or with the 'bZ4X3261UHSCN-W,' which is exclusive to one specific electronics retailer in the US.

It was a good little car, but that platform had no future left in it. Even regulatory requirements alone meant the old design couldn't keep up anymore. They really needed to rebuild it from scratch, and it's a shame they waited so long to get started.

Small models are finally starting to show up now, but honestly, they're a good four years late.
    29Anonymous2026-09-22 16:59
But isn't that because the lineup was nothing but SUVs priced above 60,000 euros? Habeck (the former economy minister) specifically said EVs were supposed to be 'affordable.'
    35Anonymous2026-09-22 20:12
German automakers don't want to build affordable EVs. Fine — then everyone will just buy Chinese cars instead.
The fact that gasoline cars are a dead end for mass production in the long run has been obvious for 20 years now.
    38Anonymous2026-09-22 19:05
    Ah yes, 'e-fuels'!1!1
    39Anonymous2026-09-22 20:14
Haven't heard a peep about those in ages — are they even still a thing?

Background and key points of the discussion

Underlying this report is a structural challenge common across the industry: because EVs carry a higher share of raw-material costs (batteries, above all), their profit margins stay lower than gasoline cars until economies of scale kick in. VW itself previously discontinued its once-popular compact EV, the e-Up, after failing to get a profitable next-generation model ready in time — a point several commenters raised in the thread. Meanwhile, the naming of new EV models like the ‘ID. Polo’ drew plenty of mockery for being just as confusing as Toyota’s ‘bZ4X,’ and several commenters cited firsthand accounts of 700–1,600 km trips to argue that charging stops aren’t really a major problem — suggesting range anxiety may be more about perception than reality.

  • Asuka Fukuda (41) Now Works at a Lounge, Sparks Reaction — 5ch: ‘Even 1.5 Years [in Morning Musume] Bought Her 28 Years of Work’

Asuka Fukuda, who joined “Morning Musume.” as its youngest member, appeared on Fuji TV’s special “Heisei’s Greatest Moments, Back to Back! Before & After of Those Stars” and revealed how she looks now at age 41. On the show, she reportedly spoke about her marriage, her journey as a single mother, and the reasons she left the group after only about a year and a half. On 5ch, reactions were split — over the surprise of her short tenure, the fact that she continued her entertainment career without ever experiencing the group’s peak (including the “LOVE Machine” era), and the truth behind the bullying rumors that circulated at the time.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Asuka Fukuda joined “Morning Musume.” in 1997 as its youngest member at formation, and left the group in 1999 after roughly a year and a half — before the “LOVE Machine” era that later drove the group’s peak in sales and popularity. At the time, her departure was explained as being “to focus on her studies,” but according to Fukuda herself, she had only said she wanted “a bit of a break,” and it was those around her who turned that into a formal graduation. This is reflected in the thread itself: comment #13 misread this as her “wanting an early retirement herself,” and comment #75 corrects it by pointing out the “poor reading comprehension.” This is the core of the remark the article is based on, and skipping over it flips her actual intent and the outcome that followed. The thread’s central divide is between those who view her decision to leave the group as “a waste,” and those who see her current situation — having found entertainment-industry work for 28 years since — as proof that “leaving was the right call.” The old rumors about her relationships with other members at the time (the bullying theory), which she does not address herself, were also a point of discussion. Comments amounting to personal attacks on her looks or abilities have been excluded.

  • Women’s Restroom Lines Never Shrink — Why No One Lines Up for the Empty ‘Squat Toilet’ Stalls

An article from NEWS Postseven about a strange phenomenon in women’s restrooms — long lines forming while the Japanese-style squat toilet stalls sit empty — became a hot topic on 5channel’s News Speed+ board. The lines have long been blamed on an imbalance between the number of men’s and women’s stalls, but the article instead focuses on a growing number of people who “can’t or won’t use” squat toilets. In the thread, posters debated several factors: more young people unable to squat, the extra time needed for periods and changing clothes, and hygiene worries about squat toilets — with a divide opening up between those dismissing it as people being “spoiled” and those pushing back.

    September 22, 2026, 11:00 AM NEWS Postseven

Men’s restrooms see a smooth flow of people in and out, while women’s restrooms end up with long lines — a scene that repeats itself at tourist-spot restrooms and at the portable toilets set up for festivals, fireworks shows, and other events. The cause has usually been chalked up to an imbalance in the number of men’s and women’s stalls, but lately renewed attention is being paid to the “squat toilet problem.”

Even you — if you pooped sitting on a Western toilet, not even counting the actual pooping, just pulling your pants up and down and wiping would take at least twice as long as just peeing
And on top of that, some women are on their period
Since periods last about a week a month, roughly speaking one in four women between their teens and fifties is on their period at any given time
Changing a pad takes extra time too, so that doubles it again

But women take longer by default, and they're not sitting there checking their phones in a restroom away from home
And if it's a big enough facility, there's usually a powder room attached to the restroom where they'd do that anyway
    85AnonymousSep 22, 2026 16:34

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Long lines at public restrooms have for a long time been discussed as simply a matter of the male-to-female ratio of stalls, but aversion to squat toilets is only just now starting to get attention as a separate factor. In school facilities too, squat toilets have gone unused as renovations shifted toward Western-style toilets, leaving a certain number of kids and young people who reportedly don’t know how — or aren’t able — to squat. In the thread, opinions split between those chalking this up to poor physical fitness or people being “spoiled,” and those pointing to physical factors like stiff ankles. The thread also raised less visible factors behind the women’s restroom lines, such as the extra time needed to change sanitary products and to dress and undress — a layered situation that the original article alone doesn’t fully convey, since it can’t be reduced to a simple matter of stall numbers.

A stronger yen is what would actually raise Japanese wages, but instead they weakened the yen, wages fell, and now they're using that to justify rising prices — makes no sense.

It's Japanese citizens who get turned into weak-yen poverty slaves — that has nothing to do with other countries, so I think inbound tourists will keep coming.
From their perspective, everything in cheap, weak-yen Japan looks affordable no matter where you go.
The only ones who think it's expensive are us slave-citizens.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Tokyo Disney Resort’s one-day passport cost ¥3,900 for an adult when the park opened in 1983, but the pace of price increases has sped up since a variable pricing system — where prices shift depending on the visit date — was introduced in 2023, with the top price set to reach ¥12,400 in October 2026. The article’s headline figure of “¥100,000” appears to be based on a family of two adults and two children hitting this top price bracket once food and merchandise are added in. USJ, meanwhile, has released a limited-time pass that makes admission free for one child, pursuing a strategy of securing family visitors even at the cost of lower prices. While complaints about the price hikes stood out in the thread, one post noted that as of September 22 the longest attraction wait time had reached 260 minutes, showing that attendance hasn’t slowed down even after the price increases. Opinions were split over the relationship between price hikes and visitor numbers, and over how the weak yen’s effect on the cost of living is hitting household budgets.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Disney Enters the “¥100,000 for a Family of Four” Era… As Price Hikes Pile Up, USJ’s “Free Kids” Offer Widens the Price Gap.”

  • PS6 “Would Dominate If Under ¥100,000”? 5ch Pushes Back: “Maybe Stop Dreaming?”

In response to the thread starter’s prediction that “if the PS6 launches under ¥100,000, PlayStation will become the undisputed dominant console,” skeptical voices piled up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Posters repeatedly pointed out that the current PS5 Digital Edition (¥55,000) is already losing out to the Switch 2 in sales, with many arguing that price alone won’t turn that around. On the other hand, some took the view that a AAA-scale title like GTA6, if it delivers high performance and visuals, could sell globally even around ¥150,000. As the discussion went on, it shifted away from price itself and toward the substance of the software lineup.

    Isn't 'it'll cost ¥200,000' also just a fantasy?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

As of September 2026, Sony has made no official announcement about the PS6, so its specs and price remain unconfirmed. The figures floating around the thread — ¥99,800, ¥198,000, ¥298,000, and so on — are all guesses from 5ch users, not information released by Sony. The debate split into two camps: those who believe “if the hardware is powerful enough, it’ll sell” versus those invoking “the lesson of PS4 to PS5,” with the latter pointing out there’s no precedent for a numbered successor becoming dominant on specs alone. Underlying this is the shared perception that the ¥55,000 PS5 (Digital Edition) is already struggling against the Switch 2 in sales, which fuels the pessimistic view that “even under ¥100,000, it’ll be tough.” On the other hand, some optimists argue that a AAA blockbuster on the scale of GTA6 could sell well even at a high price if the hardware performance backs it up. In the end, the argument converged less on price itself and more on the point that it all comes down to the software lineup.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “If the PS6 comes out under ¥100,000, it’ll instantly become the undisputed king of consoles.”

    Background and Talking Points

“Hachitsu GAMES” is an ongoing series produced by Famitsu, streamed on its YouTube and niconico channels, in which Hello! Project members play games together. Past episodes have featured various member pairings in both head-to-head and co-op formats, and in the thread, commenters reminisced about other pairings — like “Ebatako (Endo Ayakari & Oda Sakura) vs. Sakuringo (Ishiyama Sakura & Endo Ayakari)” — while others called for the return of the competitive, head-to-head format. The thread also noted that September 29 is a crowded day for Hello! Project events, with ANGERME’s autumn tour stop in Chiba and an M-line Sato fan club event both falling on the same date, which fans found notable. “Super Bunny Man” was mentioned as a game that produced memorable reactions in a past episode, though it’s worth noting those details come from posters’ recollections in the thread rather than any official statement from the show.

Yeah the song itself is good, the song is

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The duo of Aoi Yamazaki and Tomohiro Sumigama has a track record of producing a hit with Hello! Project’s Juice=Juice single “Moré! Mi Amore” (called “Moré Mi” in the thread). With the same duo now handling M!LK’s new single, thread posters reacted to the rarity of a popular songwriting team being used across agencies. Opinions split on whether to view this positively or as a sign of songwriters drifting away from Hello! Project, with some voicing concern that if the song for red-hot M!LK doesn’t become a hit, the duo will face heavy backlash. Some replies noted that Yamazaki is moving to Sony Music Entertainment RED in 2026, which may be part of the reason behind this cross-agency pairing. That said, whether this ties into a planned joint appearance at Kohaku, or what the future relationship between the two groups will be, remains speculation within the thread rather than anything officially confirmed.

On a 5channel Geinou/Sports News+ (an entertainment and sports gossip board) thread, discussion centered on the origin of Kamura’s “once-in-a-thousand-years beauty” catchphrase and comparisons to Kanna Hashimoto, cited as the precedent for such a title, along with exchanges asking about Kamura’s career history and Nishi’s current activities.

Actress Mami Kamura (33) updated her X account on the 22nd, announcing her marriage to former Japan national team footballer Daigo Nishi (39).

She posted a document bearing both of their handwritten signatures, announcing: “This is a personal matter, but we would like to report that we have gotten married.” She added her thanks, writing, “We’ve been able to keep working in our respective fields thanks to the support of so many people. Thank you so much.”

Regarding the future, she said, “Going forward, we hope to support each other while continuing to face our respective work with the same sincerity as always,” adding, “We’d be grateful for your warm support. Thank you for your continued kindness.”

"Second most beautiful girl in a thousand years"—who was the first one, then?
What an oddly weak catchphrase to get saddled with.

    Re: #24
    Probably Kanna Hashimoto, I'd guess.
By the way, the perennial also-ran for this title is AKB48's Yui Oguri.

    Re: #24
I think the "first one," Kanna Hashimoto, is fairly well known.
    25AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:10
Huh? Second in a thousand years?
    First I've heard of it…

    Re: #27
Never heard of the AKB one either.

    Re: #29
Realistically, Kanna Hashimoto has this kind of nickname all locked up.
Plenty of others got slapped with similar catchphrases afterward, but almost none of them stuck in anyone's memory.

Wasn't "once in a thousand years" supposed to be Rina Asakawa?
    32AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:14
    Aaaaaaaaaah~!
I passed like 50 girls who looked just like that on my way to the supermarket earlier to buy croquettes.

More like 1,000 a year, then.

    Even that's an exaggeration.

More like third-cutest in her class, tops.
    37AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:18
So what does she actually do?

    Re: #37
She was a longtime assistant on a TVK music show — the successor to "Sakusaku," the show Kaela Kimura used to host.

She's the girl who appeared in the commercial for the opening of the Harry Potter area at USJ (Universal Studios Japan).

She's the one who was dancing like crazy in that Amazon commercial.
    41AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:23
First time seeing her, but she's quite the looker.
    43AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:23
    So Nishi got married.
If Kanazaki ties the knot next, maybe Yuma Suzuki can finally get married too.
    56AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:30
Honestly, Nishi's got way more name recognition than this "second in a thousand years" woman
The trash media (マスゴミ, a jab combining "mass media" and "garbage") is seriously underrating the J.League and Kashima Antlers.
    59AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:33
She was in Kannai Devil, so she's probably more famous than some soccer player.

Nobody outside Kanagawa Prefecture has ever even seen that show.
    64AnonymousSep 22, 2026 17:35
Anyway, first I've heard that Kamu-nee (a nickname for Kamura) was ever called that.

She had a fairly important role in the Sentai show "Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger."

A 39-year-old soccer player doesn't have much upside left, huh
Is she prepared to follow him around to some regional J2/J3 club?

    Re: #78
    He's already retired.
    85AnonymousSep 22, 2026 18:31
Kamura is from Iwate, and Nishi's last club was Grulla Morioka, so there's an Iwate connection.
Isn't Nishi living in America these days? That's why he was reporting from over there during the recent World Cup.

    Re: #85
Not sure where he actually lives, but I recall him saying the place was just something a few of them rented together for the World Cup period.
And it sounded like the World Cup was just a stop along a round-the-world trip anyway.
A world tour before getting married—must be nice, having money.

    Background and Discussion Points

The phrase “the most beautiful girl born once every X years” is a promotional catchphrase often used in the entertainment industry, not necessarily based on any official survey or statistic. The thread saw reactions like “never heard of it” and “no idea what the criteria even are,” highlighting how differently people react to this kind of tagline. At the same time, Kanna Hashimoto’s name came up repeatedly as the precedent, since she’s the example that stuck most widely among similar nicknames — with commenters noting that most people given the same label afterward are barely remembered. The article confirms Nishi has already retired from active play, but where the couple will be based and what their lifestyle will look like after marriage can’t be determined from Kamura’s announcement, so that remains speculation from the thread rather than confirmed fact.
