  • Men’s 4x100m Relay: Japan Finishes 5th — China Takes Gold, Taiwan Silver, South Korea Bronze

In the men’s 400m relay final on day 10 of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Japan (Shuhei Tada, Fukuto Komuro, Yoshihide Kiryu, Yuki Koike) finished 5th with a time of 38.57 seconds. China took gold in 38.17, followed by Taiwan in 2nd, South Korea in 3rd, and Thailand in 4th. Japan never found its rhythm from the first leg (Tada) to the second (Komuro), and sloppy baton work throughout cost them a medal for the first time in four straight Games. Kiryu reflected, “We said ‘gold medal’ out loud, but somewhere in our hearts there was a feeling that just getting a medal would be fine.” On 5ch, discussion centered on baton-passing technique, the team’s aging roster, and whether hosting the Games was even worthwhile.

◇Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Day 10 — Athletics (September 28, 2026, Paloma Mizuho Stadium)

The men’s 400m relay final was held, and Japan (Shuhei Tada, Fukuto Komuro, Yoshihide Kiryu, Yuki Koike) finished 5th in 38.57 seconds. China won gold in 38.17. Taiwan took 2nd, followed by South Korea and Thailand.

Japan never got into a rhythm with Tada running the first leg and Komuro the second, and baton work lacked sharpness across the board. Koike, taking the handoff from Kiryu in 4th place on the anchor leg, dropped a further spot. Having missed a medal for the fourth Games running, Kiryu admitted, “We said ‘gold medal’ out loud, but somewhere in our hearts there was a feeling that just getting a medal would be fine.”

    Background and Talking Points

Japan’s men’s 400m relay squad is still largely built around the generation that contended for medals at the Tokyo Olympics, and many posts in the thread pointed to a stalled generational handover — “same members, nobody coming up behind them.” Some posts speculated that Japan overhauled its baton-passing technique in the wake of the Tokyo Olympics dropped-baton incident, but that’s speculation within the thread rather than an officially confirmed change, so it’s worth treating with caution. Opinions were also split on the value of hosting the Games, with some framing it as a track record built toward an eventual Olympic bid and others simply seeing it as an event that failed to generate buzz. Alongside comparisons noting that times from China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand have all improved while Japan’s top sprinters’ personal bests have declined with age, this 5th-place finish is being read less as a one-off slump than as a structural problem.

  • Ace Combat 8 Sparks Launch Sales Worries — Predecessor Only Hit 7.5 Million After Steep Discounts

With the release of “Ace Combat 8” approaching, users on 5ch’s game hardware board have been buzzing about the fact that its Amazon bestseller ranking has barely moved from around 2,000th place for nearly a month. While the official livestream drew over 4,500 concurrent viewers, and the game sits at No. 4 on the PlayStation Store and No. 1 on Steam, opinions split on whether the weak package sales reflect genuinely soft demand or simply a shift toward digital purchases. Posters also pointed to the previous entry, “7,” which opened with 202,000 units in its first week before eventually reaching 7.5 million copies through repeated steep discounts — fueling a lively debate over how far “8” will climb.

I think a big reason AC7 sold well was that it was the first numbered entry in 12 years, plus VR support.
It had only been 5 years since '3D,' but that was a portable remake, and during those 12 years it was mostly spin-offs like the X series, Horizon, and Infinity — I think that gap mattered a lot.
But on the flip side, 7's actual content was pretty mediocre, so as a reaction a lot of people seem to be taking a wait-and-see approach with 8.

    Re: #93
Have you not noticed the PS5 console itself — despite airing tons of desperate commercials over and over, its sales never budge!?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The previous title, “Ace Combat 7,” put up a respectable first-week showing for its time on PS4 with 202,000 units, but it was later discounted repeatedly — down to as low as 668 yen — eventually building up to 7.5 million units in cumulative sales. In the thread, this history of “padding the numbers through discounting” was treated as shared background knowledge, setting a high bar for what’s expected of 8. Where opinions diverged was in how to read the sluggish Amazon ranking. Given that the game sits at No. 4 on the PlayStation Store and No. 1 on Steam, some read this as simply “sales having shifted from packaged copies to downloads and Steam,” while others remained skeptical that “even so, the numbers are just too weak.” Some also pointed out that 7’s time-limited missions were poorly received, and that as a reaction many fans are taking a wait-and-see approach with 8. It’s also worth noting that 8 has a paid three-day early access period before release, and the thread never made clear exactly what will be counted as part of its “first week” sales.

So then, why WAS the report made??

Background and Key Points of This Story

An agency statement responding to a weekly magazine report is a familiar pattern in celebrity news, but it’s easy to overlook that Tristone’s wording here narrows the denial to one specific point — violence — rather than denying the allegations as a whole, stating only that “there is absolutely no truth to claims that he committed violence.” Reactions on the thread split over how to read the reported police visit to his home: some treated the fact that police were called as significant in itself, while others argued that a police call doesn’t prove violence occurred. Separately, Sakaguchi’s past relationship with actress Mei Nagano — which both of their agencies confirmed at the time — is a different topic that’s easy to conflate with this allegation. The agency’s explanation so far hasn’t addressed the circumstances behind the allegations themselves, and whether further reporting follows looks set to be the next thing to watch.

  • Rakuten Won’t Re-Sign Pitcher Naoki Hiatari Next Season — Back in August He Apologized on Social Media Over a Money Dispute

On September 28, Rakuten announced it has notified pitcher Naoki Hiatari (21), now in his third year since joining straight out of high school, that it will not offer him a contract for next season. In August, it came to light that Hiatari had tried to borrow money from a minor, and he posted an apology on social media saying he “lacked financial discipline and awareness as a member of society.” Reactions on 5channel covered a wide range of angles: some pointed out the coincidence that his name contains the characters for “daily wage” (日当) and “night duty” (当直); others noted that a team like the Hiroshima Toyo Carp probably wouldn’t have made an issue of this, highlighting differences in team culture; and still others questioned a system that binds players to a team via reserve rights yet lets clubs cut them loose after just one year.

    Re: #60
If he's released as surplus to roster needs he becomes a free agent, so he's free to sign with another team

Background and Key Points of This Story

Release notices like this are standard offseason procedure for every team — the player involved becomes a free agent and can negotiate with other clubs. Rakuten hasn’t stated an explicit reason for the notice, but the backdrop widely cited is that in August it came to light Hiatari had approached a minor about borrowing money, and the matter was reportedly still being handled with the players’ union’s legal counsel involved. In the thread, some pointed to an asymmetry in the system: players are bound to their team by reserve rights until they reach free-agency eligibility, yet the team can unilaterally decline to renew a contract — and this case was held up as a textbook example. Many details, including the specific circumstances of the loan request and Hiatari’s relationship with the other party, haven’t been made clear in reporting, and some posts in the thread were speculative, so anything not confirmed as fact has been left out of the main text.

  • Hakuba Village Hotel Let Guest Check Out After Ignoring Her ‘I Scorched the Room’ Report — 5ch: ‘Worse Safety Sense Than Genba Neko’ (a meme cat mascot symbolizing reckless ‘looks fine!’ safety checks)

At a hotel in Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture, a Singaporean woman staying as a guest reported to the front desk that she had “scorched the room,” but the hotel let her check out without ever inspecting it — and by the time staff went to look, she had already left the country, leaving police unable to question her. The scorched items were the bed sheets and a duvet, apparently ignited by a headlamp that had been left charging in the room. On 5ch, users questioned why the hotel didn’t check the room right away despite the report, sparking debate over the part-time staff’s handling of it and where the responsibility lies.

The point is she reported it right after scorching the room — why didn't they go check? This isn't a case of her sneaking out without a word. She told them she'd burned something, which means it could've turned into an actual fire, and this hotel just left it unchecked. That's messed up.

Inbound tourism is driving prices way up across the whole lodging and travel industry, so there's zero incentive to dig deep into some rare one-off case like this.

    192AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:18
    Re: #179
    Got away from what, exactly?
She reported it herself the moment she scorched the room.

Background and Key Points of This Story

When a lodging facility receives a report of something like scorch damage, the establishment is generally expected to check and respond promptly. In this case, the focal point was that the hotel’s initial response was delayed even though the guest had reported the incident herself right after it happened. Some replies in the thread jumped in with assumptions like “foreign guests are individualistic and don’t apologize,” but going by the article’s actual timeline, the guest properly reported the damage before leaving the country, and the discussion course-corrected partway through. Fires caused by small lithium-battery devices like power banks and headlamps have been increasingly reported in various places in recent years, and leaving them charging unattended is often a contributing factor. It’s also worth noting — something neither the article nor the thread addresses clearly — that even though police can’t voluntarily question her now that she’s back home, that’s a separate issue from whether she can still be held civilly liable for damages under the lodging contract.

Japan’s national team faced Venezuela in the Kirin Challenge Cup, and on the 5ch live-commentary thread the biggest topic by far was goalkeeper Kokubo — earning his first-ever national team call-up — getting injured and subbed off just 5 minutes into his debut. Background and Talking Points

The Kirin Challenge Cup is a friendly Japan’s national team regularly arranges as a tune-up ahead of the World Cup finals, and this time the focus was on getting younger players into the mix. With a group of 19-year-olds being tried out, goalkeeper Kokubo suffered a rare mishap — getting injured and subbed off just 5 minutes into his first national team call-up — and that dominated the early part of the thread. Some posts pointed to a lower-leg injury, though at that point in the match its exact severity wasn’t yet clear. The other major talking point was the height of the defensive line: Venezuela came out fast and pressured Japan early, splitting posters between those wanting the line pushed higher and those who felt Japan should prioritize avoiding injuries. There was also mention of South Korea’s match happening around the same time (a scoreless 0-3 loss that included a Kim Min-jae own goal), but that’s a separate game entirely and doesn’t reflect the Japan-Venezuela result — worth flagging since it’s easy to conflate the two.

  • Masanari Iida’s video of him eating raw venison sashimi racks up 4.6 million views — flood of warnings about the dangers of eating raw game meat

On September 27, TV personality Masanari Iida (a former BreakingDown fighter with over 130,000 followers on X) posted a video to X showing himself enjoying raw venison sashimi and beer in the woods, and it went on to rack up more than 4.6 million views. In response, posts flooded in on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Express+ board warning about the risks of eating raw game meat, including hepatitis E virus and parasites. At the same time, some pushed back on the warnings as “know-it-all” posturing, arguing that eating what you want is a matter of personal responsibility — splitting the thread between concerns over food safety and respect for individual choice.

On September 27, Masanari Iida (410,000 subscribers) posted a video on X of himself eating raw venison sashimi. The post has been viewed more than 4.6 million times, drawing a wave of comments warning about the dangers of eating raw deer meat.

    Re: #87
Beef or horse sashimi is way tastier, several times over
Not something you need to eat in an age with this much food abundance

Background and key points of this topic

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare classifies raw game meat, including venison, as something that “should not be served raw” under the Food Sanitation Act, since risks like hepatitis E virus, Sarcocystis, and other parasites can only be eliminated by cooking. One commenter in the thread (#15) pointed out that freezing can kill parasites but does nothing against the hepatitis virus — a distinction that’s easy to miss and worth keeping in mind. The thread split along a familiar 5ch fault line: those raising food-safety concerns versus those defending individual choice under an “it’s his own responsibility, so leave him alone” stance — a pattern that recurs well beyond just raw-food debates. Iida is a former BreakingDown competitor, and the video’s 4.6-million-view count speaks to how much attention it drew; that said, no one in the thread reported him actually falling ill, so it’s worth remembering the warnings here are general risk statements rather than a confirmed case.

  • “Japan Is Already Finished” Remark Splits Opinion as 5ch Erupts Over the Country’s Future

A quote allegedly posted on social media by a 19-year-old woman — “Japan’s already finished lol, drew a total dud in the country lottery, what a trash nation” — became the talk of a 5ch thread. The one-liner set off a debate that exposed a real generational gap in how people see Japan’s future. Some voices leaned pessimistic (“Annoying as it is, she’s got a point,” “today’s 40-somethings are just barely the last generation that gets to escape unscathed”), while others pushed back (“this isn’t a zero-or-hundred kind of thing,” “we’re in decline, sure, but ‘finished’ is a long way off”). The conversation then sprawled into income comparisons with the US and Thailand, South Korea’s exam-hell culture, and how 1960s entertainment stacks up against today’s — before finally devolving into an argument about the Nintendo Switch 2.

    Background and Talking Points

“Country lottery” (国ガチャ, kuni-gacha) is internet slang for the idea that the life options available to you are largely determined by the country you happen to be born in — likened to a gacha loot-box draw. The term has been increasingly common in recent years against a backdrop of stagnant real wages and Japan’s relative slide in international economic rankings. The thread’s core disagreement was over whether Japan’s present situation counts as “already finished” or “still relatively fortunate depending on what you compare it to” — with one side reaching for comparisons to developing regions like Africa, South America, and India, and the other insisting the fairer comparison is against developed powers like the US and China. The income and entertainment comparisons posted in the thread are all based on individual posters’ personal impressions, not verified statistics. The original trigger — a “19-year-old woman’s post” — likewise cannot be confirmed from the thread itself as to whether it’s real or where it was supposedly made, and shouldn’t be treated as established fact. Generational arguments like this one tend to collapse into oversimplified “kids these days” vs. “back in my day” framing, and this thread is no exception — notice how comparisons to 1960s entertainment or South Korea’s exam culture flatten a lot of individual nuance. Worth keeping in mind while reading.

  • Sakura Wars 30th Anniversary Illustration Leaves Out Only the New Sakura Wars Protagonist — 5ch: ‘Guess They Want to Forget It Ever Happened?’

This week’s Famitsu cover featured a newly drawn commemorative illustration celebrating Sakura Wars’ 30th anniversary, bringing together protagonists from across the series’ history — but the protagonist of “New Sakura Wars,” produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi, was notably missing. On 5ch, reactions ranged from “Maybe even Sega treats the new game as a black mark on its history” to pointed criticism of the production process (“Shouldn’t the character designer of the latest game normally be the one asked to draw it?”). Opinions also diverged over the lineage of character design across the series and how to judge New Sakura Wars’ sweeping overhaul of the game system.

Kind of dark that the protagonist from V — which you could also call a black mark on the series — made the cut, but the New protagonist didn't. Guess Sega really wants to pretend New Sakura Wars never happened.
    4AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:57
I mean, come on, New Sakura's character design is way better than that thing in the top left, no contest.

    6AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:58
If I had to defend it — maybe it's because the character designer is different? Then again, it IS the latest entry, so you'd think the person who drew the latest game would normally be the one to draw this. And if they weren't going to line up every single character, they could've just used a representative Sakura instead. This is the one pattern you really shouldn't do.

Well of course it looks different, it's a different character designer. This is what you get when you commission Kosuke Fujishima.

    Re: #14
Actually, this one was drawn by Matsubara.

    Re: #14
People mix this up a lot, but Kosuke Fujishima only ever did the original character concepts for Sakura Wars 1 through 5 — the actual character designs and most of the artwork you see were done by veteran animator Hidenori Matsubara.
    15AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:21
Where's Nagoshi these days? Get him to comment on Puyo Puyo Champions or something.

This and Dai no Daibouken (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai) really got a raw deal.

They were resting peacefully in their graves, and then get dug back up only to be kicked while down and reburied…

Do these developers have no heart at all?

    Re: #19
At least with Dai, they finally finished the anime all the way through this time, so that part was good. Everything else, though… well, the manga running right now is good too.

Dai's fine outside of the games — it's just on a completely different level from Sakura.

It's the 30th anniversary, but the lineup hasn't changed at all since the 10th.
    23AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:39
They're not making a sequel or a new entry, so why even bother with a feature like this?

    26AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:48
Surely they'll bring it up somewhere in the article itself, right? If they don't, well, that tells you everything.
    32AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:04
That's Fujishima's style, not Matsubara's — man, this is lame.
    41AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:38
    Re: #32
Fujishima's take on Sakura Wars art looks completely different from what people who actually played the games are used to seeing, so it's easy to tell right away.
    33AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:10
Same thing happened with the Gundam 50th anniversary short film that gathered protagonists from every anime series — Shinn Asuka was the only one missing.
    42AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:46
    Re: #33
He ended up basically in the enemy boss slot instead of the protagonist slot anyway — and on Athrun's side, not Kira's, no less.
    34AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:13
Hidenori Matsubara can draw in a style like In This Corner of the World, so he's more versatile than Kosuke Fujishima.
    53AnonymousSep 28, 2026 17:14
He tried to turn it down himself, got forced into it anyway, and then got bashed by people who don't even know the backstory — that's just tragic.
    54AnonymousSep 28, 2026 17:22
    Re: #53
After seeing how that whole thing played out, any sane creator would steer clear of this IP. They buried the brand in more ways than one.
    64AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:31
    Re: #53
Same with Takashi Yamazaki on Dragon Quest: Your Story — he turned it down because he didn't know Dragon Quest, but Horii and Square Enix pushed him into it anyway. Seems like a lot of these disastrous projects come down to screwups that have nothing to do with the creator's own talent.
    75AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:22
So for the New Sakura Wars anime, they actually brought in the Bleach character designer — not sure if that was a good call or not, though.
    91AnonymousSep 28, 2026 21:06
    Re: #75
That was for the main game's key character design, not the anime. The sub-designer's heroine for the anime was cute, though.

Not totally sure about this, but here's the Kubo one:

Anyway, does Famitsu only ever do otaku-pandering covers these days? That's probably why sales keep dropping. Couldn't they just stick the otaku stuff on a "cover 2" on the back instead? lol
    99AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:15
So Sakura Wars 5 counts as canon too, huh. That's the one that killed the series.

    Re: #99
Sega moves too fast on everything — guess they jumped on the political-correctness bandwagon too early as well…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sakura Wars is a simulation RPG Sega released in 1996. New Sakura Wars, released in 2019, was produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi and featured a sweeping overhaul of both the battle system and character designs. Across the series’ history, Kosuke Fujishima has handled the original character concepts, while much of the actual artwork has been drawn by veteran animator Hidenori Matsubara — and in this thread, opinions were split over which artist’s style the new illustration more closely resembles. The fact that “only the protagonist is missing” is simply a matter of this particular illustration’s composition; it’s easy to misread this as an official announcement that New Sakura Wars has been discontinued or branded a franchise embarrassment, which it has not been. As commenters pointed out with the example of Shinn Asuka being left out of a Gundam 50th anniversary illustration, such “omissions” in commemorative art can simply come down to production circumstances, so a definitive judgment should be avoided.

  • Sugiyama Yuna’s Kirin Commercial Co-Starring Homare Sawa Resurfaces on 5ch — “Wait, She Played Soccer?”

Sugiyama Yuna, a member of Hello! Project’s BEYOOOOONDS (nicknamed “Byo”), has been discovered to have appeared in a Kirin commercial alongside former Japan women’s national team star Homare Sawa before joining the group — and 5ch lit up over the find. The thread filled with surprised comments like “Wait, Yuna-chan played soccer?”, followed by replies pointing out she’d shown off ball-juggling (freestyle “lifting”) skills at her Hello! Project audition. Posters also speculated about why such an obviously talented kid ended up choosing Hello! Project in the first place, and the back half of the thread turned into a lively debate about her pre-idol background.

    Background and Discussion Points

The commercial Sugiyama Yuna appeared in was a Kirin soccer ad built around the theme of “connection” between Homare Sawa and children — at the time, she appears to have simply been cast as a general child actor, not as any kind of soccer talent scout pick. What really got the thread going was the question of why Sugiyama, now a member of Hello! Project’s BEYOOOOONDS (“Byo”), chose Hello! Project at all, given she already had such a notable casting credit under her belt before joining. Hello! Project has several paths to membership — advancing from trainee status into a group, as well as a kind of “early/advance recruitment” where outside talent is brought in specifically to boost an existing group’s profile — and several posters referenced that system directly. The way pre-debut history like commercial credits or ball-juggling skills shown off at an audition keeps resurfacing well after the fact is itself something of a recent phenomenon, driven by how easily an idol’s past now gets dug up via social media and online archives.
