  • New ‘Child NISA’ Could Create a ¥25 Million Wealth Gap by Age 18, Sparking Inequality Debate

Starting October 1, 2026, brokerages across Japan will begin accepting account applications for the new “Child NISA” program. Open to children aged 0 to 17, the tax-free investment scheme allows up to ¥600,000 per year (¥6 million cumulative) in tax-exempt investment, with full rollout set for January 2027. A thread on 5ch drew attention to warnings that, depending on parents’ wealth and investment know-how, the gap between children could balloon to anywhere from several million yen to as much as ¥25 million by the time they turn 18. Commenters were split over whether this gap is a problem calling for correction or simply the natural result of individual family choices.

Starting October 1, brokerages will finally begin accepting applications to open “Child NISA” accounts. The new tax-free scheme lets children aged 0 to 17 invest in mutual funds, tax-free, up to ¥600,000 a year and ¥6 million total. While brokerages are stirring up excitement with lavish sign-up campaigns, some worry that “parents’ financial literacy could create a hopeless gap between kids by the time they turn 18.” Ahead of the program’s full launch in January 2027, we look into the “future inequality problem” lurking within this new system.

Everyone will get used to it eventually.
There was even an era when national railway fares doubled in just two years.

    Background and Points of Debate

Child NISA operates as a separate allowance from the adult NISA program (¥3.6 million a year, ¥18 million cumulative), permitting tax-free investment of up to ¥600,000 a year (¥6 million cumulative) under a child’s name, for kids aged 0 to 17. Families where the parents have already maxed out their own NISA allowances are positioned to fill this new allowance sooner, which tends to widen the gap in asset formation among children. The thread split over whether to view this gap as “the result of parental effort and choice” or as “a system that locks in inequality based on household wealth” — with the latter camp arguing that tax breaks like this are, by nature, aimed at families who already have money to spare. At the same time, NISA is a tax exemption, not a guarantee of investment returns — if markets slump, the gap could narrow. The fact that “filling it fastest” doesn’t necessarily translate proportionally into future asset value is a nuance that gets lost in the headline figures alone.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “‘The ¥25 million gap at age 18 is brutal…’ Concerns over young people’s ‘abnormal inequality’ as Child NISA launches, with some parents saying ‘maxing it out fastest is love♥’.”

  • New BMW 3 Series Design Overhaul Revealed — 5ch: ‘We Lost the Same War, So Why the Huge Gap?’

A post about BMW’s redesigned 3 Series sparked a lively comparison of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus popularity on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board. Posters cited each brand’s Instagram follower counts (BMW: 44.21 million, Mercedes-Benz: 39.04 million, Lexus: 5.15 million) and YouTube subscriber numbers one after another, turning the discussion toward why long-established luxury brand Lexus trails so far behind on social media. Some praised Lexus’s “overwhelming reliability,” while many others pointed to its weak brand power, and some even questioned whether the comparison was fair to begin with — opinions were split.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The new 3 Series was reportedly announced with both gas and EV (i3) versions sold side by side, and the timing coincided with BMW’s generational model change — that’s what kicked off the thread. The discussion then shifted away from design and toward whether it’s even valid to use social media follower and subscriber counts as a measure of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus’s popularity. Some pushed back in the comments, calling it “idiotic to compare a whole company’s numbers to a single model,” pointing out a mismatch: follower counts represent an entire brand, while the actual topic at hand was individual models. There were also points raised about Lexus sales being concentrated in the U.S. market and about Toyota diverting development resources to GR (Gazoo Racing), but the thread never actually examined how either of those factors might relate to Lexus’s weak social media presence.

Kozono was one of the celebrated “High School BIG3” who joined the team amid huge hype out of Ichi-Wakayama High School, and the news that he was being let go after five years without a single top-team win sparked surprise. The thread turned to the broader struggles of the 2021 draft’s top picks, including classmates Daichi Moriki (Hanshin) and Kyuda Kazama (SoftBank), sparking a debate over the accuracy of pro scouting.

DeNA announced on the 29th that it will not renew contracts for the following players next season: outfielder Ayato Inoue (26), pitcher Kenta Kozono (23), pitcher Chihaya Sasaki (32), pitcher Hayato Horioka (28), pitcher Hayate Nakagawa (27), pitcher Shintaro Fujinami (32), development-roster infielder Kenji Nishimaki (27), pitcher Ryunosuke Matsumoto (24), infielder Ao Ogasawara (20), and catcher Taiga Kondo (21).

Inoue joined the team as a sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft. Expected to develop into a power hitter, he showed signs of a breakout last season with 2 home runs, but this season he appeared in only 3 games.

Think of it like he went to college — four years on the development roster is fine, but by the year after that he needs to at least show some sign of breaking out. Five years sounds about right, and he's still young enough to switch career paths.

Unrelated, but I think they should've cut Kō Neo loose around this point too.

An elbow, you can operate on — but once you cut into a shoulder, that's basically it.

The Seibu Lions' own scouts actually begged the front office to draft Darvish, so the story goes — but they dug so deep into his background (not practicing, smoking, not gelling with teammates) that the team decided "this one can't be fixed here" and passed on him. So you can't just call scouts incompetent. As for Yamamoto, his elbow was already hurting back in high school.

    Agreed.
Kozono was well-balanced, but he always felt like a scaled-down, younger version of one of those college first-round pitchers you see every year — I never got that "imagine how good he could be if he breaks out" thrill from him.
Kazama's stuff had more power behind it, and I found him more exciting to watch (nobody outside the team really knows about the conduct stuff anyway).
As for Moriki, those draft pundits who always push high schoolers were hyping him up hard, but even back in his third year of high school I didn't think he was first-round caliber — so when he pitched well on the top team as a rookie, it beat my expectations in a good way. Shame about the injuries though.

Truth is, the Yomiuri Giants are actually the kindest organization when it comes to retired players. There are tons of cases where they find them jobs within the group. Even if it's a low-paying, entry-level job, they at least give them something — they don't just toss them out carelessly.

If you were a first-round pick ("doraichi"), the team will keep you on as a scout or in PR all the way to retirement age.
The Giants' scouting staff is full of former first-rounders.

Background and key points of this discussion

The “release notice” (senryokugai tsūkoku) is an annual system in which each NPB team publicly announces which players it won’t re-sign for the coming season. Being named doesn’t mean immediate retirement — players still have the option of trying out for other teams or signing development-roster deals, and the article itself notes that DeNA is reportedly offering Kozono a shot at a development contract. What split opinion in the thread was how to judge scouts’ “eye for talent.” The fact that all three members of the 2021 draft’s “High School BIG3” (Kozono, Daichi Moriki, and Kyuda Kazama) stalled out fueled skepticism about scouting itself, while others pushed back, citing the story of how Yu Darvish was passed over due to concerns raised by background checks into his conduct, arguing you “can’t just call scouts incompetent across the board.” One thing easy for readers to miss is that this release wasn’t limited to Kozono and Fujinami — it covered 10 players in total, including Ayato Inoue, Chihaya Sasaki, Hayate Nakagawa, and Hayato Horioka — meaning it’s really part of a broader roster overhaul for DeNA.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] DeNA gives release notice to 10 players including 2021 first-round pick Kenta Kozono, Ayato Inoue, Chihaya Sasaki, Hayate Nakagawa, and Shintaro Fujinami [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Flu Cases Surge 1.5x in a Week, 13 Straight Weeks of Growth — Okinawa Tops Chart at 26.27 Per Clinic

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that the number of flu patients per fixed-point medical institution nationwide reached 8.48 for the week ending September 20, up about 1.5 times from 5.54 the previous week. This marks the 13th consecutive week of increases. By prefecture, Okinawa topped the list with 26.27, followed by Tokyo at 15.21, Aichi at 15.12, and Kanagawa at 14.71. On 5ch threads, various theories flew back and forth over why Okinawa’s numbers stood out — from the impact of foreign tourists to a rebound effect from insufficient indoor ventilation during the COVID pandemic — alongside ongoing exchanges about vaccine effectiveness, side effects, and personal experiences.

The number of flu patients reported per medical institution is up about 1.5 times from the previous week.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, a total of 31,428 patients were reported from fixed-point medical institutions nationwide during the week ending September 20, working out to 8.48 per institution.

That’s roughly 1.5 times the 5.54 recorded the previous week, marking 13 consecutive weeks of increases.

    Re: #170
    That's beside the point.
It only helps prevent severe illness, nothing more.

Background and key points of this topic

The flu’s fixed-point reporting system tracks the average number of patients reported by roughly 5,000 medical institutions nationwide per institution, with a reading above “1” marking the start of an epidemic. This time, 46 of Japan’s 47 prefectures (all except Miyazaki) have crossed that threshold, with especially high numbers in urban areas and the southwestern islands such as Okinawa, Tokyo, Aichi, and Kanagawa. Posters in the thread never reached a consensus on why Okinawa stands out so much — theories ranged from the movement of foreign visitors to a rebound effect from avoiding indoor ventilation during the COVID pandemic — but it’s worth noting none of this is confirmed by actual reporting. There was also plenty of back-and-forth over vaccination and side effects, but the flu itself produces a certain number of complication cases every year, and there’s no medical evidence of a recent sudden surge. The oft-cited “10 times last year’s level” figure may also simply reflect the fact that last year was a record low, which makes a straightforward comparison misleading.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “Flu case numbers over 10 times the same period last year, up about 1.5x from the previous week, 13 straight weeks of increase, Okinawa highest at 26.27, followed by Tokyo at 15.21.”

  • “Muroi Shinji” Spinoff Films Set for First-Ever Terrestrial TV Broadcast — 5ch Buzzing

The spinoff film series centered on Muroi Shinji from “Bayside Shakedown” (Odoru Daisōsasen) is set to air on terrestrial TV for the first time ever. Ahead of the broadcast, threads on 5ch lit up with talk of how Muroi and Waku’s stories ended in the films, along with praise for star Yanagiba Toshiro’s performance. The discussion also spread to the box office performance of the currently-running sequel film and the long-reported reluctance of cast members, including Oda Yuji, to return for sequels — sparking a broader debate about where the franchise goes from here.

Timeline-wise: he got arrested, got shipped off to the Hiroshima Prefectural Police,
then came back and rose all the way to Commissioner-General's Secretariat Councillor.
At that point the Commissioner-General told him, 'once this dirty work is done, you're one of us' — and he refused.
In the final film he nearly got cut down by the Commissioner-General,
but the Commissioner-General ended up losing power, and Muroi was in some odd post by the end,
so I don't think he was fired — more like he quit.

    Re: #88
Still, the story goes he turned down villain roles specifically to protect Muroi's image, so he clearly has real attachment to the character. That's separate from whether he actually wants to appear in this one, though. Apparently this time too he told the staff it'd be weird for Muroi — who quit the police — to cross the cordon and join the investigation.

    Background and Talking Points

The “Bayside Shakedown” franchise began as a TV drama in 1998 and expanded through multiple theatrical films, reaching a turning point with the two-part finale centered on Muroi Shinji. In the thread, while Muroi’s death was depicted unambiguously, whether Detective Waku Heihachiro lived or died was only hinted at through dialogue, leaving room for differing interpretations. The claim that lead cast members like Yanagiba Toshiro and Fukatsu Eri were long hesitant to return for sequels — out of concern about being permanently typecast — has circulated before, and this thread adds that Oda Yuji, too, reportedly hesitated over sequel appearances for a time. For viewers who’ve been following the new films without having seen the earlier entries, this first-ever terrestrial broadcast could be a chance to catch up on the whole series in one go.

  • ANA Revises ‘SFC’ Program After Backlash — What Happened to That ¥3 Million-a-Year Rule?

On September 29, 2026, ANA released a revised proposal for its elite-status “SFC” program. The new rules originally announced in April had required cardholders to rack up at least ¥3 million in annual card spending just to keep using airport lounges — a condition that drew fierce backlash, especially from “mile pilgrims” (mairu shugyō, users who binge-fly in short bursts to earn elite status). Following this revision, 5ch users debated whether the ¥3 million threshold is actually reasonable, questioned the old system’s design of granting near-permanent elite status in the first place, and pointed out that “pilgrimage” flyers have been crowding out regular island-route commuters.

So what happened to the controversial “¥3 million a year in card spending” rule?

On September 29, 2026, ANA (All Nippon Airways) released a redesign proposal for its elite-member perks program, the “ANA Super Flyers Card” (SFC). The airline had already announced a new set of rules back in April, but a flood of criticism from users forced it back to the drawing board. So how did the lounge-access condition that drew the biggest backlash end up changing?

ANA’s SFC works so that once you meet certain requirements once, you get near-permanent access to a raft of perks — starting with airport lounges — for as long as you keep the card. That’s why quite a few people have taken to intensively flying ANA for a full year just to qualify, a practice known as “mile pilgrimage” (mairu shugyō).

I honestly don't get the mentality.
Eating and drinking in the lounge right before a flight? Even bathroom breaks are more restricted in the air than on the ground.
Are these people just big eaters who can't be satisfied with the in-flight meal?

If you put most of your spending on the card, ¥3 million isn't really that big a deal.

Phone bills and property tax are still on auto-debit since switching is a hassle, but I put pretty much everything else on the card.

    When I checked recently:
Me: ¥2.94 million a year (damn, so close but not quite enough)
    Another card: about ¥200,000
    My wife: about ¥2.4 million
    That's roughly where we landed.

Though we don't even use the ANA lounge.

What is this, Reiwa Natto? (a startup mocked online for shady "forever" perk promises)

That said, some people did all that pilgrimage specifically for this, so maybe give pilgrims two free lounge visits a year.
Charge for anything beyond that — or make it 3 free visits per ¥1 million spent, something like that.

Background and Key Points of Debate

ANA’s SFC program works on a system where, once you satisfy the requirements a single time, your elite membership lasts essentially forever. This encouraged a subset of users to take on “mile pilgrimages” — flying intensively in a short period specifically to qualify. The new rules ANA announced this past April would have required “at least ¥3 million in annual card spending” just to keep lounge access, which triggered a fierce backlash, especially from the pilgrimage crowd, and forced the company to reconsider. On the thread, several arguments ran in parallel: whether the ¥3 million bar is actually reasonable (can an ordinary person really sustain ¥250,000 a month in card spending?), skepticism toward the underlying decision to make elite status "permanent" in the first place, and the observation that pilgrimage-driven bookings have been filling up island routes and squeezing out residents who depend on them for daily transportation. At the same time, some users emphasized value beyond the lounge itself — like priority check-in when connecting internationally abroad — making this a debate that doesn’t reduce to simple for-or-against. It’s worth noting that the specific conditions for the revised “LITE” tier weren’t detailed at the time of this thread, and this article doesn’t cover them either.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[Mile Pilgrimage] ANA’s New “SFC” Program to Be Partially Revised — What Happens to the Controversial “Under ¥3 Million/Year in Spending = No Lounge Access” Rule? Conditions for the New “LITE” Tier.”

  • Wolverine Gets 28% Off on Amazon Just Two Weeks After Launch — 5ch: “That Was Fast!”

The PS5 game Marvel’s Wolverine, released on September 15, 2026, saw a 28% price cut on Amazon barely two weeks after launch. Rakuten Books soon followed suit with the same discount. On a 5ch thread in the hardware/industry (“Geha”) board, posters reacted with shock at how fast the price drop came — “That was way too fast a call!” — while others predicted it would soon end up in bargain-bin sales or New Year’s grab bags, and voiced concern over whether it could still hit its first-year sales target. Discussion of what’s driving the discount touched on inventory levels and the used-game market, turning the thread into more than just a price-drop report.

If just those 20,000 physical copies keep cycling through the used market, it'll only hurt sales further.

There's a legend for this: New Gundam Breaker, whose demo was so awful it set off a wave of pre-order cancellations — a panicked Amazon slapped a 46%-off discount on it on launch day itself…

    Background and Talking Points

This price cut made waves precisely because of how quickly it followed launch. The thread cited rumors of a 6-million-unit first-year sales target and a ¥50 billion development budget, but both figures are unconfirmed hearsay, not verified official numbers. On the speed of the price drop, some posters suspected physical copies were flowing straight back into the used market, while others noted it could simply be a routine post-launch sale like any other year. Opinions in the thread were split on whether the discount reflects oversupply or is just standard promotion, and some linked it to worries about Sony’s game division performance — though that connection is speculation from thread participants, not something backed by financial results.

The “Adult Women’s Dorm,” where single women who feel they have “nowhere to spend their final years” come together, is drawing attention. It’s a setup where unmarried women in their 40s to 80s live in an apartment complex built around community. On the day of reporting, the session was limited to repeat visitors, and 13 people took part — coming not just from Osaka but from outside the prefecture too, including Hyogo and Fukui. Behind this lies the reality that elderly people living alone are often turned down when they try to rent. On the thread, some welcomed it as “making perfect sense,” while others raised doubts about the roughly ¥200,000-plus monthly cost, and about the condition that residents who can no longer live independently — say, due to dementia — must “graduate” to a care facility. Whether a men’s version could ever work was also a hot topic.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Elderly people living alone are often turned down as tenants because landlords worry about risks like solitary death or unpaid rent, and single elderly women — who often struggle to line up a guarantor — tend to find their options especially limited. This “Adult Women’s Dorm” is an attempt to fill that gap, but opinions on the thread split mainly along two lines. One was cost: commenters pointed to the burden of a monthly fee said to run over ¥200,000. The other was the condition that residents must “graduate” to a care facility once they can no longer live independently — several questioned whether the people who actually struggle most are precisely those hovering right at the line of being able to live independently or not. Some also asked whether a men’s version could work, though the original article itself only covers this women’s case and doesn’t mention any equivalent effort aimed at men.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5channel (News Speed+) thread “‘Nowhere to Spend My Final Years’: The ‘Adult Women’s Dorm’ Where Elderly Single Women Gather — ‘Newly Built, Near the Station,’ ‘Independent Living Required’… Why Supporters Are Flooding in From Across Japan.”

  • Switch 2’s “Effectively ¥100,000” Price Tag Sparks Uproar, Splits 5ch Right Down the Middle

The price of the Nintendo Switch 2 sparked heated debate on a 5ch thread. Some users pointed out that once you factor in games and an extra microSD card on top of the console itself, the real cost comes to roughly ¥100,000, prompting complaints that it’s “tough for ordinary people.” That drew pushback along the lines of “it’s absurd not to be able to afford it when you’re paying your taxes,” though plenty of replies seemed baffled since the logic didn’t quite connect. Others noted that even the ¥55,000 domestic PS5 isn’t selling especially well as a point of comparison, suggesting that price alone doesn’t decide how well a console catches on.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in 2025 with a console price in the ¥50,000 range. The “effectively ¥100,000” figure discussed in the thread appears to reflect the felt total cost once you add games and an extra microSD card on top of the hardware itself. Part of the reasoning is that the built-in storage tends to run out quickly, making an additional storage purchase practically mandatory. The thread saw pushback along the lines of “it’s absurd not to be able to afford it when you’re paying your taxes,” but the leap from high prices to tax burden and social security left many replies sounding confused. Meanwhile, the observation that “even the ¥55,000 domestic PS5 is struggling to sell” suggests that hardware price alone doesn’t determine adoption — whether there are games you actually want to play matters just as much as a buying motivator. Note that in the latter half of the thread, the discussion devolved into personal attacks and discriminatory language aimed at a specific poster, so that portion has been omitted from this article.

    An aging society…

Somehow in the 2020s, streaming services and TV shows alike are skewing more and more toward the elderly.

Is it really okay for Japanese society to have old men who don't have much time left watching stuff like 'Drag him into the Makuu Dimension'?

That's a kids' show, come on.

Japan is full of childish old men like the ones on 5ch, so young people have ended up way more childish than they used to be too.

In a country where the young are busy scalping Chiikawa merch while old men sit online watching Space Sheriff Gavan, there's no hope.

Background and key points of this topic

“Space Sheriff Gavan” is the first entry in Toei’s “Metal Hero Series,” which began airing in 1982 and is known for blending human-sized heroes with giant mecha. This news is an announcement that episode 1 will stream free on the official YouTube channel — it appears to be the original footage from back then, not a new production. The thread was mostly filled with nostalgic comments quoting lines from the theme song, but opinions differed on how long the Reiwa-era new series ran, with some saying “it ended after half a year” and others saying “the characters are still appearing in another current series, so the contract itself was probably for a year” — the exact broadcast length can’t be confirmed from the information given. Views were also split on comparisons with ’70s shows and on the quality of the Reiwa version, reflecting a temperature gap between those nostalgic for the original and those more critical of the newer series.
