  • 2025 Rice Crop ‘Surplus’ — Private Stockpiles Hit Record Highs

The “rice surplus” from the 2025 harvest is becoming a serious problem. At a JA (agricultural co-op) collection and shipping facility in Tochigi Prefecture, stockpiles have piled up to 8,189 tons — equivalent to 1.63 million 5-kg bags — the highest level on record for this time of year. The average supermarket price has fallen to the ¥2,000 range for 5 kg, good news for consumers but a headache for producers scrambling to find storage space. On 5ch, users debated why the rice surplus happened, the timeline of the “Reiwa Rice Panic,” the timing of stockpile releases, and how distributors and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries handled it all.

The rice surplus from the 2025 harvest is becoming serious. As new-crop rice distribution ramps up, the 2025 crop — which dealers bought in at high prices — feels overpriced, and consumers are steering clear of it. Private-sector rice stockpiles have piled up to record levels, and the average supermarket price has fallen to the ¥2,000 range per 5 kg. Good news for consumers, but producers are on edge.

At the “Tochigi Rice Wide-Area Collection and Shipping Center” (Yaita City, Tochigi Prefecture), run by JA Zen-Noh Tochigi, 2025-crop rice is piled high. That’s because the “Reiwa Rice Panic” drove rice prices up and demand down, and on top of that, the cheaper 2026-crop rice has already started moving through distribution.

The center stores rice as low-temperature brown rice. As of the end of August, stockpiles of the 2025 crop stood at 8,189 tons (equivalent to 1.63 million 5-kg bags), the highest level on record for this time of year. Storage capacity is stretched thin, and the JA is scrambling to secure space for the new crop. A representative said, “We’re managing by having regional JA branches and trucking companies store some of it in their warehouses.”

Were they secretly hoarding rice during the Reiwa Rice Panic?

Exactly. If the Agriculture Ministry wants to talk about protecting farmers' livelihoods, they should figure out why this mess happened this time and rebuild the whole rice distribution system.

Rice wholesalers clogged up the supply chain to fake a shortage and jack up prices. The harvest was actually bigger than usual, so now all that extra stock is just sitting there unsold.

It's because after saying 'we're growing plenty of new rice, just wait,' they released bridge stockpile rice without limit in the meantime, then reneged on buying it back. If you can follow a timeline and do basic math, you'd get it.

Just like with meat, maybe only high earners should get to eat proper domestic rice.

    Re: #164
Rice disappearing from supermarket shelves happened in summer–fall 2024. Summer–fall 2025 was when everyone was going crazy over Koizumi's stockpile rice — that's when regular rice, too expensive to sell, was piling up unsold. There was no shortage at all. Way too many people have their timeline all mixed up.
    166AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:12
Then bring branded rice back down to ¥2,000 for 5kg. Otherwise, no way I'm buying it, idiots.

Prices dropped so I tried some, and it was terrible. It's supposed to be domestic, but there were some long grains mixed in, and the color shifted from translucent to white. The taste, shape, and color were completely different from before — what foreign rice are they mixing in, exactly?

They jacked up prices and held back supply, and now they want help? Give me a break. New rice is cheaper, so I'm buying new rice. I feel for the wholesalers who bought expensive rice and are now taking a loss, but consumers were victims too — so we're buying the cheap stuff.

The 2026 crop is looking like a poor harvest. It hasn't been announced yet, but for varieties that need a Grade-1 rating to be sold under a brand name, apparently around 20% aren't making the cut.

The whole 'nothing fills you up like rice' thing makes no sense.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Reiwa Rice Panic” traces back to a 2024 shortage and price spike, which prompted the government to release stockpiled rice. Opinions in the thread split over whether the oversupply is due to distributors like rice wholesalers, or to the Agriculture Ministry mistiming its stockpile releases. Also worth noting: the idea that “a poor harvest caused a shortage” isn’t necessarily accurate — in reality, shifts in planted acreage affected yield more, and some point out that by volume, the 2025 crop was actually one of the largest harvests in recent years. At the same time, heat damage caused “white immature grains” in some regions, creating quality variation — so low prices and quality can’t simply be equated.

  • SSDs Really Do Die Without Warning — 5ch: “The Least It Could Do Is Say Goodbye”

The thread kicks off with a poster’s story: while installing Ace Combat 8 and playing a different game on the side, their SSD suddenly froze and threw the PC into a blue screen. Attempts to discharge the system and reboot in minimal configuration failed to fix it, prompting responses from other posters wondering if the old warning that “SSDs die without warning” was actually true. The discussion expanded to cover the reliability of early Intel SSDs, lifespan differences between storage types like QLC and TLC, the distinction between controller failure and NAND wear, recommended manufacturers, and the importance of backups, blending personal anecdotes with technical knowledge.

    It's not a lie
    TLC dies after 50 years
    QLC dies after 20 years
The controller dies after about 3 years
It's just that something else ends up being the limiting factor

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Beyond the number of write cycles (lifespan varies by NAND type, such as TLC vs. QLC), an SSD can also stop working due to failure of the controller chip that manages it. In this case, based on the screenshots the poster shared, the sequence went blue screen → failed System Restore, and the thread itself pointed out that the controller likely gave out before the NAND itself did. While HDDs tend to show gradual signs of trouble as they physically degrade, SSDs can become unreadable and unwritable with no warning at all — which is the basis for the saying that “SSDs die suddenly.” That said, some early models, like the Intel X25-M, were known for remarkable longevity, so manufacturer and individual unit variance play a big role too. The thread also noted that “write volume” matters more for lifespan than “hours of use,” but that’s only one factor — it’s easy to overlook that failures like controller death happen for reasons separate from NAND wear. The importance of backups and cloning was something everyone in the thread agreed on.

  • After License Leak, Fraud-Alert Filings Flood CIC/JICC and Delay Processing — 5ch: ‘Times Should Just File for Everyone at Once’

Following the leak of member information from “Times Car,” it has emerged that a rush of self-notification filings — meant to prevent misuse of leaked driver’s license data — and disclosure requests — meant to check for unauthorized contracts — has overwhelmed credit bureaus CIC and the Japan Credit Information Reference Center (JICC), delaying processing. The leak, which included images of driver’s licenses, was only announced the day before, and the surge appears to reflect users moving preemptively to guard against future misuse. On 5ch, some argued that Times, as the source of the leak, should file the bulk notifications on users’ behalf, while others countered that filing and disclosure are separate procedures and companies have no obligation to act as an intermediary — and still others argued that even without a self-notification, victims of unauthorized contracts should be exempt from liability because of the lender’s inadequate screening, leaving reactions split over how effective the response really is.

Credit bureaus CIC and the Japan Credit Information Reference Center (JICC) announced on September 29 that a surge of self-notification and disclosure requests via the internet and smartphone apps has caused delays in processing.

The previous day, “Times Car” disclosed a large-scale data leak that included images of driver’s licenses. It appears people worried about their own license information being leaked are responding by filing self-notifications to guard against future misuse, or by requesting disclosure to check whether cards or loans have been fraudulently taken out in their name.

Way too many companies hang onto former members' data. When I canceled DAZN it showed something like 'you can easily come back to the same account anytime' and it creeped me out. Stop storing addresses, phone numbers, emails, and credit card info.
    124AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:33
    Re: #113
There are all sorts of laws requiring data to be kept for like 10 years, so it's also a hassle to delete only the unneeded parts once the time comes. Probably easier to just mark it 'withdrawn' in the database and keep the data forever.

Note: Keeping former members' personal data for 10 years isn't uniformly required by the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, but in practice it's often justified by the statute of limitations on claims under the Civil Code or preservation obligations under tax law.

I forgot the PIN — or was it a password — for my driver's license. I wrote it down when renewing at the license center, but I've forgotten it. Does everyone else remember theirs? I've also forgotten what the driver's license PIN/password is even used for. I've got a gold license so the course isn't that long, but maybe I still zoned out and forgot it.

① Enter the 8-digit PIN (two sets of 4 digits) you set when renewing your license. You should have set this yourself at renewal.

What's the "printed data slip" that US forces in Japan require in addition to the driver's license?
    https://response.jp/article/2017/03/28/292737.html
This printed data slip can be pulled up by the license holder themselves from a dedicated terminal, using the 4+4 digit PIN they set when renewing their license.

FYI: your driver's license number doesn't change [when you change your name].

Background and key points of this story

CIC and JICC are designated credit bureaus that manage the personal credit information used to screen credit card and loan applications; the system handles two separate procedures — a “self-notification” for people who want to prevent contracts being taken out in their name without consent, and a “disclosure request” for those who want to check whether any unauthorized contracts already exist. Because the Times Car leak announced the previous day included images of driver’s licenses, it appears a flood of applications came in from users worried about identity-theft contracts. On the forum, some argued Times should handle the bulk filing on users’ behalf, while others pointed out that self-notification and disclosure are separate systems and companies have no obligation to act as an intermediary — leaving opinions split. Some also argued that regardless of whether a self-notification was filed, liability for unauthorized contracts falls on the lender for inadequate screening and is therefore waived — a point not covered in the original article, and one readers could easily get the wrong idea about.

  • Sendai’s Population Falls for the First Time Ever in the Census — City Insists ‘We’re Not in a Declining Phase,’ Pointing to a Tiny 0.05% Drop

On September 29, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released finalized population figures from the 2025 census (as of October 1), revealing that Sendai’s population has declined for the first time since the census began in 1920. The city had previously projected its population would peak in 2028 at 1,101,000, and since this decline amounts to a mere 0.05%, officials maintain that “we do not view this as the start of a declining phase” at this stage. Looking at the breakdown, the population aged 65 and over grew 5.09% while those under 15 fell 9.47% — numbers that starkly reflect Japan’s ongoing trend of fewer children and more elderly people. On 5ch, threads buzzed not only with sarcasm over the city’s “not a declining phase” line, but also comparisons of population and vibrancy between Sendai and other government-designated cities like Kumamoto, the history of how mergers expanded Sendai’s city limits, and even broader discussion of the structural flow of people from Tohoku to the greater Tokyo area.

Finalized population figures from the 2025 census (as of October 1) were released on the 29th, revealing that Sendai’s population has turned to decline for the first time since the census began in 1920. The city says it “does not consider this the start of a declining phase” at this stage, and plans to keep a close watch on future population trends. The city had previously estimated its population would peak in 2028 at 1,101,000, and expected the 2025 figure to reach 1,100,275 — a slight increase.

By sex, the male population fell 0.38% to 529,609, while the female population rose 0.26% to 566,537. By age group, the elderly population aged 65 and over rose 5.09% to 270,319, while those under 15 fell 9.47% to 116,474 — a clear sign of the ongoing trend of fewer children and an aging population. The working-age population (15-64) was essentially flat at 673,328 (up 0.03%).

Among the city’s five wards, a “decline in the north, growth in the south” pattern emerged. Miyagino Ward fell 1.34%, marking its first-ever decline, while Izumi Ward declined for a second consecutive time. The other three wards all saw increases.

But Japan is so consumed by Tokyo-supremacy thinking

The way cities are built in the West, especially Europe, is just fundamentally different.
Those cities started out as walled fortress towns, so they were compact cities from the get-go, where you can live your whole life within walking distance.
Japanese cities sprawl out sloppily and assume everyone drives. That's exactly the urban form that takes the worst hit from a shrinking, aging population.

Yokohama and Kobe are seeing population declines too, you know.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Sendai’s projected population peak is 2028 (1,101,000), so this decline of 0.05% could arguably fall within the margin of error for that long-term projection. Part of why the city is emphasizing that this “isn’t a declining phase” is that it wants to stay consistent with that forecast. The populations of Japan’s government-designated cities have historically fluctuated significantly due to municipal mergers, and as posters in the thread point out, Sendai itself grew from roughly 600,000 to around a million through mergers. When a merger expands a city’s boundaries, it often absorbs rural farming areas along with it, which tends to split growth and decline trends between the urban core and the outlying districts. This time’s “decline in the north, growth in the south” pattern is one example of that, with Miyagino and Izumi wards declining while the other three wards grew. What readers might easily miss is that behind the modest 0.05% overall figure lies a much faster-moving shift in age structure — the under-15 population fell by 9.47% while the 65-and-over population grew by 5.09%. The thread’s discussion expanded into debates about Tokyo’s over-concentration and population outflow from Tohoku, but these are being read less as something unique to Sendai and more as a structural problem shared by regional hub cities across Japan.

  • Voice Actor Kenjiro Tsuda Loses AI Voice-Cloning Lawsuit — 5ch: “No Matter How You Listen, That’s Clearly Tsuda’s Voice”

Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda sued the operator of the video app TikTok, demanding removal of a video that used AI to clone his voice without permission. On September 30, the Tokyo District Court dismissed Tsuda’s claim, apparently mainly because the video had already been taken down before the lawsuit was filed. At the same time, the ruling marked the first time a court has suggested that a person’s voice could be protected under “publicity rights,” making the outcome more nuanced than a simple win or loss. On 5ch, reactions ranged from astonishment at how accurately the voice was reproduced, to an understanding that the removal request was the only real point at issue, to confusion over the fact that no law yet directly regulates AI voice cloning.

Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda filed a lawsuit against the operator of the video-sharing app TikTok, seeking removal of a video in which someone had used generative AI to imitate his voice without permission. The Tokyo District Court issued its ruling on September 30. Presiding Judge Aya Takahashi dismissed Tsuda’s claim.

    Re: #106
That's not really the story. It's just that the video was already deleted, so there was nothing left to actually demand

Background and Key Points of This Story

Publicity rights attribute the customer-drawing power (economic value) of a celebrity’s name or likeness to that person; the requirements were laid out in a 2012 Supreme Court ruling (the Pink Lady case), and the right has mainly been recognized in relation to names and likenesses since then. Today’s ruling draws attention because it’s the first to suggest this protection could also extend to a person’s “voice.” On 5ch, opinions are split between those reading the dismissal of the removal request as “AI voice mimicry has been ruled legal” and those who understand it as simply meaning the request lost practical purpose because the video was already deleted — a distinction that makes the ruling’s real substance easy to misread. Japan still has no law directly regulating AI voice mimicry, making this an early test case for the legal framework that exists short of one.

  • Private-Sector Average Salary Hits Record High — 5ch: “Here’s What the Median Actually Looks Like”

News that the average salary at private companies hit a record high drew more skepticism than celebration on 5ch’s livestream discussion board. Since the figures include student part-timers, rehired retirees, and non-regular workers, commenters repeatedly pointed out that “the number would be much higher if you limited it to male full-time employees” and that “we should be looking at the median, not the average.” The thread even produced actual data on median and average annual income by age bracket for male full-time employees, sparking disagreement over which figure better reflects reality.

The inequality gap is genuinely getting brutal.
For your average college-grad-or-better crowd, 5 million yen is basically "that's what new hires make" territory — but for the people who fell through the cracks, it seems like no matter how many years they work, they can never clear that bar.

Japan's now ranked #2 in the world for inequality, right behind the US.
    That's genuinely bad.
And unlike the US, Japan has rigid class immobility on top of a shrinking population, so it's turning into a society we've never seen before.
    121AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:41
    Re: #108
The median for college grads in their 30s is only 3 million yen, though? Guess it looks that rosy if you deliberately ignore the inconvenient stats.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Average salary” figures typically refer to statistics published by bodies like Japan’s National Tax Agency, and they cover all salaried earners — including part-timers and non-regular workers. That tends to pull the number below what full-time male employees alone earn, while at the same time a small number of high earners can drag the average above the median. The thread’s dueling claims — “over 7 million yen if you limit it to male full-time employees” versus “the real figure is closer to 4.5 million yen by median” — actually line up once you account for what’s being measured in each case. On the other hand, the claim that Japan ranks “second in the world for inequality, behind only the US” comes with no source cited and can’t be verified. A rising average salary doesn’t necessarily mean living standards are improving — it needs to be read separately from the trend in real wages, which account for inflation.

  • Xbox’s “Discs to Digital” Officially Launches — Sega Titles Now Included

Microsoft has officially launched “Discs to Digital” today, a program that lets owners trade in their physical discs for digital copies, and Sega titles — previously excluded — have now been added to the lineup. The program works even on already-supported Xbox One consoles, meaning the only major third parties still not on board are Square Enix and Bandai Namco. On 5ch’s hardware/industry threads, discussion centered on why so many third parties agreed to license their games for this, and why Sony isn’t doing something similar.

Just insert your physical disc and get a digital copy in return (works on Xbox One consoles too)

Sega games, previously unsupported, are now included

That leaves only Square Enix and Bandai Namco among major publishers still not participating

    98AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:32
    Re: #97
Oh, so it's outsold Forza now?

Background and Key Points of Debate

Discs to Digital works by reading a unique identifier burned into the disc to verify ownership and then granting the matching digital copy — a mechanism that, as posters in the thread pointed out, makes it technically difficult to bring original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on board, since those use a different (or nonexistent) identifier scheme. Meanwhile, PlayStation discs don’t carry the same kind of identifier, which is part of why Sony reportedly can’t easily roll out a similar program. As for why so many third parties agreed to license their titles, one view in the thread held that “if you can’t make money on the secondhand market anyway, it’s better for the revenue to go to the developer instead.” Opinions were split on whether the program is really a push toward a disc-less future or, conversely, a way to add value to physical discs and prolong their life — no clear consensus emerged.

A producer of the anime “Tenmaku no Jadoogar” remarked that “recent anime is all isekai, there’s no diversity,” and the comment got picked up on 5ch. Since the show itself is set in a harem with a strong isekai flavor, the thread was quick to fire back with jabs like “look who’s talking” and “they’re just playing the diversity card because they can’t compete on popularity.” At the same time, some users broke down what set hits like “Mushoku Tensei” and “Frieren” apart from other isekai, while others defended the industry by pointing to production costs and streaming revenue, so the discussion didn’t split neatly into one side or the other.

    Re: #105
It just keeps dragging on with behind-the-scenes political scheming

Background and Key Points of This Debate

So-called “Narou-style” isekai works — named for the web novel site where many originate — are said to keep getting greenlit because their built-in fanbase and proven source material make it easier for production committees to justify funding, keeping the adaptations coming. In the thread, most reactions focused less on the producer’s “no diversity” comment itself and more on the irony that their own show is a strongly isekai-flavored harem drama. At the same time, some pointed to the gap between this show and works like “Mushoku Tensei” and “Frieren,” which won huge support despite also being isekai, arguing that it’s the quality of execution — not the genre label — that drives popularity, which keeps the discussion from being a simple case of “the isekai criticism boomerangs back on you.” Note that the comments about how many shows are in production or their budgets reflect general industry perception voiced in the thread, not verified figures.

  • Wolverine Sweeps the ‘Crappy Game of the Year’ Nominations — 5ch Dubs It ‘The Bug-Hunting Game’

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (“Console Wars”) board, a thread went up for the annual year-end tradition of nominating candidates for the board’s “Crappy Game of the Year.” The thread quickly became dominated by one title: the big-budget action game Marvel’s Wolverine, reportedly made on a ¥48 billion (roughly $320 million) budget. Users piled on with reports of rampant bugs, the game being beatable in about 15 hours, and clips of glitches like trees that simply won’t cut down — and with no real rival candidate emerging, the mood turned into an outright “Wolverine landslide.” The discussion also spilled over into trade-in prices, comparisons of unit sales against Spider-Man 2 (20,039 vs. 324,710 copies), and worries about distribution once physical discs are phased out, keeping the thread churning with mixed opinions throughout.

Then is there anything worse than Wolverine?

Background and key points of this discussion

“Crappy Game of the Year” (KOTY) is an unofficial tradition dating back to the 2000s on 2ch/5ch, in which users vote each year on the most disappointing games, and the Hardware & Industry (“Console Wars”) board runs its own genre-by-genre nominations every year-end. This time, Marvel’s Wolverine dominated the thread as posters piled on about its bugs, its short 15-hour clear time, and its high development budget, with almost no other contender emerging — leaving the thread with an overwhelming sense that “Wolverine wins in a landslide.” That said, as commenters in the thread themselves point out, KOTY picks tend to get tangled up with plain like-or-dislike toward specific hardware or titles, and the thread often wraps up each year without a clear, well-reasoned verdict. It’s also worth noting that the sales figures and trade-in prices cited here are largely drawn from social media and aggregator sites, and may not necessarily match official manufacturer figures.

Following this confession, 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board lit up with a range of opinions — touching on the particular embarrassment of puberty, the shopping struggles of single-parent households, and real-world accounts that cashiers don’t actually pay attention to what customers are buying.

    Background and Talking Points

Nippon TV’s late-night show “Ueda to Onna ga DEEP ni Hoeru Yoru” often runs talk segments that dig into guests’ private lives, and this episode had Kitano Kii opening up about her own upbringing. How a child from a single-parent household navigates gender-specific purchases like sanitary products and underwear varies hugely from family to family, and it’s rarely discussed in any organized way. In the thread, the real-world claim that “cashiers don’t actually pay attention to what customers buy” clashed with the view that “the embarrassment unique to puberty never really goes away” — both grounded in personal experience, making it hard to call either one more valid. There were also accounts from fathers who themselves grew up in single-parent households and went shopping with their daughters without issue, showing the struggles described aren’t universal. Since family circumstances vary so much case by case, it’s worth being careful not to over-generalize.
