  • “Dopamine Brats” Aren’t Just Kids: 5ch Debates a New Name for Grown-Up Screen Addicts

On 5ch’s “Nanji-G” board (なんでも実況G, a live-chat discussion board), a thread about “dopa-gaki” — slang for people so hooked on their phones they can’t focus, literally “dopamine brats” — sparked debate over whether the label should really be limited to kids. Posters pointed out that countless adults are just as enslaved to dopamine through booze, cigarettes, gambling, and phone addiction, kicking off an argument about what to call them instead. Someone floated “dopa-min” (playing off “dopamine” plus the common online-fandom suffix “-min,” meaning “folk/citizens”) as a new term, but opinions split over whether it actually sounds catchy or lands as a decent jab. Scrolling your phone at the dinner table came up as the textbook “dopa-gaki” move, and the talk spread into where exactly to draw the line — does watching videos or TV count too?

There are tons of adults out there with the exact same symptoms.
What do we even call them?
    5AnonymousSep 30, 2026 12:23
Probably because narrowing it down to kids on purpose makes it easier to call out.

    Re: #93
So TV is fine? What about radio?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The core disagreement in this thread comes down to whether “gaki” (kid/brat) refers to actual age or to a kind of inner immaturity. In response to the point that plenty of adults are just as hooked on gambling, alcohol, and their phones, some pushed back that simply extending “gaki” to adults brings along an unwanted extra nuance — something like “acting like a child at your age” — so widening who the term covers isn’t as simple as it sounds. The alternative name floated, “dopa-min,” also split opinion, since it’s pronounced almost identically to “dopamine” and so lands as a weaker jab than intended; no clear replacement emerged from the thread. Exactly where “dopa-gaki” behavior starts and stops was also left unresolved — checking your phone during meals was cited as the textbook example, but there was no agreement on whether watching videos or TV while eating counts the same way. Nearly every post took for granted that smartphones and social media have reshaped people’s attention spans and habits, but the thread never settled on what to call the phenomenon or exactly who it should apply to.

  • What Hello! Project Is Missing: ‘Elegant Big-Sister’ Vibes — 5ch: ‘Round Here, “Pretty” Doesn’t Mean “Beautiful”‘

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board titled “What today’s Hello! Project lacks is members with that ‘elegant big-sister’ feel” took off, with names like Kudo Yume, Arisawa Ichika, Tanimoto, and Ebata coming up one after another. Some said that looking back across the group’s whole history, Maimi is about the only one who really fits the “elegant big sister” mold, and the thread split over how to define that grown-up quality as something distinct from just having a cute idol face. Others brought up height, a clean-cut look, and vocal power as criteria, turning it into a debate that went well beyond simple taste in looks.

    Re: #68
Rei Rei kind of gets shortchanged, what with everyone around her being tall or getting praised for vocal skill

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Hello! Project frequently brings in new members while they’re still in their teens, so the group as a whole tends to skew toward a “cute” image. As a result, members with a grown-up “elegant big sister” air are relatively rare, and even looking back across the group’s entire history, the thread could only really settle on a handful of names like Maimi and Ebata. Posters also pointed out that “kirei” here isn’t being used as a straightforward judgment of looks, but rather to describe a sense of cleanliness and composure — a different axis from simply ranking facial features. Several people cited height and vocal power as conditions, suggesting it’s not just visual factors but a member’s overall stage presence that defines that “big sister” feeling.

  • Kaoru Ueda Nets 9 Goals for Lille This Season — French Press Hails ‘Phenomenal’ Form

Kaoru Ueda (28) of French Ligue 1 side Lille scored twice in a friendly against Venezuela on the 28th, keeping up his hot streak with 9 goals in 10 games for his club this season. French outlets “maxifoot” and “SOFOOT” both ran pieces praising Ueda in response, and the news sparked a thread on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Express+ board. Most posters welcomed his form, but discussion split along two parallel tracks — a debate over how to rate Ligue 1’s level, and arguments over whether he now surpasses past national-team forwards like Shinji Okazaki and Yuya Osako — with no consensus reached.

Japan’s ace striker Kaoru Ueda (28), of French top-flight club Lille, scored twice in an international friendly against Venezuela (28th, Hiroshima), and his stock is soaring in France.

French outlet “maxifoot” reported: “Japanese player Ueda is putting up phenomenal numbers. Ueda proved his good form with the national team too. Lille’s new striker has kept up a scoring streak since the start of the season.” Fellow outlet “SOFOOT” likewise wrote: “Ueda is maintaining his form.

This Japanese player has covered a lot of ground — playing on North American pitches at the World Cup, briefly returning to the Netherlands, then signing with Lille late in the transfer window. But the 28-year-old striker’s finishing ability hasn’t changed one bit,” the outlet added.

    Background and Points of Debate

Both “maxifoot” and “SOFOOT,” which praised Kaoru Ueda, are long-established French football outlets, so their assessments carry some weight as the views of reporters who follow the domestic league day to day. Where the thread split was over the “level of Ligue 1” — one side sees it as underrated compared to the Premier League and Bundesliga despite being one of Europe’s big five leagues, while the other points to how many Ligue 1 players go on to the Premier League. Both positions are partially true, and neither settles the debate. The other axis was the comparison with Shinji Okazaki and Yuya Osako, but since these are players from different eras with different leagues and roles, there isn’t much basis for a clear-cut verdict. One point readers can easily misread is that the article places his 2 goals in a single friendly side by side with his club record this season (9 goals in 10 games) — two figures from very different contexts.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “[Soccer] Japan National Team’s Kaoru Ueda (Lille) — 9 Goals in 10 Games This Season, Stock Soaring in France: “Phenomenal Numbers,” “A Smash Hit”.”

  • Ace Combat 8: 5ch Split on First-Week Sales Forecast — ‘Here We Go Again, But Will You Buy It?’

On the Game/Hardware board (Geha), a thread predicting first-week sales for Bandai Namco’s new title Ace Combat 8 was heating up. First-week sales figures for the previous title, Ace Combat 7, differ depending on the source — 202,000 units according to Media Create, versus 158,968 according to Famitsu — and replies were immediately divided over which figure to use as the baseline. On top of that, some pointed out that Ace Combat 7 came with a PS4-exclusive pre-order bonus (a copy of the previous game), whereas Ace Combat 8’s bonus is the same across all platforms, removing the factor that had favored PlayStation sales. Others speculated that since Bandai Namco isn’t a games-only company, there may be little sense of urgency internally about weak sales performance.

If it sold 200k on PS4, normally on PS5 it should be roughly half that, around 100k (Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, and the Warriors titles all saw sales halve too)
If it comes in below that, the problem would have to be with the game itself — we'll see

Played 7 on Switch and honestly wasn't that fun
It felt less like pure dogfighting and more like being forced through ground-attack missions and annoying "buzzwire" precision segments (like the wire-loop game where touching the wire buzzes you)
8 doesn't look much different from the last one at a glance either
Also, when you roll your plane the whole screen rotates with it — a terrible design choice you can't turn off, which makes it harder to control
There's supposedly a "Standard" control scheme for beginners,
but that comes with the downside of wide, sluggish turns, which also sucks

If none of that's been fixed, I probably won't buy it

Even physical copies get early access if you buy the limited edition
Until the limited edition sells out, it splits popularity with the standard edition, so the first week shouldn't look as dismal as the standard-edition numbers alone would suggest

Background and Key Points of Debate

Ace Combat 7 launched on January 17, 2019, with first-week sales reported as 202,000 units by Media Create and 158,968 units by Famitsu. In Japan, home console sales figures are independently estimated by two separate research firms, Media Create and Famitsu, and discrepancies between their reported numbers — often due to differences in which stores are surveyed — are not unusual. In the thread, opinion split over which figure should serve as the baseline for predicting Ace Combat 8’s first week, and another point of debate was whether sales would drop off from the second week onward as a reaction to the previous title’s reliance on limited-edition pre-order bonuses. Bandai Namco also operates a diversified business spanning toys and hobby goods, amusement facilities, and mobile games, and this structure — where weak console game sales don’t immediately threaten the company as a whole — is likely behind the thread’s comments about a ‘lack of urgency.’

    Background and Key Points

Marina Makino was a longtime member who helped lead Morning Musume., and her graduation was announced this past spring. As one comment in the thread put it, wishing the announcement could have been “handled a bit better” given how sudden it felt, it seems a fair number of viewers were caught off guard by the timing. Opinions in the thread split mainly over how to view her television opportunities since graduating — some welcomed the supportive messages from co-stars, while others voiced concern about the change in her media exposure. Note that exchanges touching on behind-the-scenes agency dynamics were largely baseless speculation, so this article focuses on the genuine episodes of support instead.

  • 2-Year-Old Colt ‘The Austrian Painter’ to Be Renamed Just Two Days After First Win Over Hitler Associations

A 2-year-old racehorse named “The Austrian Painter” is set to be renamed just two days after notching its first win. According to a report from The Athletic, the name was flagged for evoking Adolf Hitler, who was born in Austria and is known for having failed the entrance exam to an art academy in Vienna as a young man. On the 5ch sports/entertainment board, opinions clashed between those saying “the obvious association is Klimt or Egon Schiele” or “this is overthinking it,” and others suggesting the deliberately vague name might have been an intentional prank.

    Background and Points of Debate

Racehorse names are vetted in advance by each country’s racing authority, and names that evoke real people or are deemed inappropriate can be rejected or ordered changed. In this case, after the win, the name “The Austrian Painter” was flagged as evoking Hitler (known for failing the entrance exam to a Vienna art academy), and the renaming was decided following The Athletic’s report. Opinions on the thread split between “the natural association should be Klimt or Egon Schiele — this is reading too much into it” and “the deliberately vague name itself may have been an intentional prank.” Though not obvious to Japanese speakers, the Hitler anecdote is widely known in English-speaking countries because of its historical background, and differing interpretations of the namer’s intent are at the center of the disagreement.

  • Male Volleyball Player Comes Out as Sexual Minority — 5ch: “We’re Living Real-Life Haikyuu!!”

Reo Arao, a player for SV League Hokkaido, has reportedly come out as a sexual minority. He explained, “Rui Takahashi’s courage pushed me forward, and I decided to share this in my own words.” He becomes the second men’s volleyball player to come out publicly, following Rui Takahashi, who did so earlier. On 5ch, the thread was full of excited comparisons to the anime Haikyuu!! and messages of support, though some questioned the point of making such an announcement at all, and others debated why sexual orientation in particular tends to be the thing people are expected to disclose.

    Re: #45
Homosexuality is gradually gaining social acceptance, so there's probably a feeling that if an influential person speaks up, it pushes that acceptance further
Lolicon is heading the opposite direction, toward exclusion, so there's no way anyone would come forward about that
And fetishes just aren't the kind of thing you formally announce (it's not about trying to get people to understand)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Coming out as a sexual minority in men’s professional sports remains rare in Japan, and it’s said that Rui Takahashi’s earlier example helped push Arao toward this decision. Arao plays in the SV League, a newly launched top-tier men’s volleyball league that succeeded the V.League — an environment where individual players’ personal statements tend to draw a lot of attention. In interviews, Arao himself described his gender identity not as a definitive “gay” but as something closer to “questioning,” a nuance that’s easy to miss given the gap between the headline’s blunt “comes out as gay” framing and his own more careful words. Because volleyball is a team sport, aspects of private life shared with teammates — locker rooms, training camps — naturally become a talking point, and alongside supportive reactions, the thread also carried voices questioning the point of making such an announcement at all. The underlying question of why sexual orientation specifically becomes something to publicly disclose while other personal traits or preferences don’t echoes broader debates about the visibility of sexual minorities.

  • ADHD College Student Mixes Up Course Registration Deadline With Start Date — Again

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (an anything-goes live-commentary board), a thread was started by a 24-year-old college student diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) reporting that they had mistaken the course-registration deadline for the start date and missed the window entirely. The poster said they had repeated a grade in high school and taken a six-month leave of absence, and that this was already their second course-registration blunder. The thread debated the effects and side effects of medications like Concerta, how ADHD compares with ASD in terms of social adaptability, and whether to consult the university’s student affairs office. Meanwhile, some replies questioned the framing itself — “Isn’t this more a scheduling problem than a registration mistake?” — leaving reactions to the story divided.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a developmental disorder marked by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, typically treated with medications such as Concerta and Strattera — though their effectiveness varies by individual, and some users report that continued use builds tolerance, making the drugs less effective over time. CAARS, an assessment scale used in diagnosis, quantifies traits like inattentiveness and hyperactivity; as one reply notes, checking one’s inattentiveness subscore is said to give a rough sense of how mistake-prone a person is. The thread also split over interpretation — whether this genuinely counted as a “course-registration mistake” or was simply a misread deadline — with reactions differing depending on whether readers took the post literally or read it against the fuller context. The recurring comparison of whether ADHD or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is more disadvantageous socially also came up, but it’s worth noting this isn’t something medically settled either way — it depends on individual traits and circumstances.

And longer features run past 10:00
So it'll straddle 10:10 pretty much automatically, no adjustment needed

    Background and Discussion Points

Nonstop! is a Fuji TV information program airing weekday mornings, and “Star Makers” is a segment showcasing the behind-the-scenes side of idols and other talent. On the thread, users noted that the segment airs around the 10:10 mark almost every time, pointing out that this is a holdover from the scheduling policy set back when Shosuke Tanihara was the show’s MC — hard news in the 9 o’clock hour, entertainment coverage from 9:50 onward. The person seen in the lesson footage is believed to be Eiichi Sugai, who has long handled choreography for Hello! Project; the “getting buffer” comments weren’t meant as an insult but rather lighthearted banter among fans surprised by his physique change. Shinobu Otake’s appearance was a separate segment from the Juice=Juice feature, but the back-to-back airing order is what generated buzz — further details of the broadcast aren’t given in the source text.

  • New ‘Child NISA’ Could Create a ¥25 Million Wealth Gap by Age 18, Sparking Inequality Debate

Starting October 1, 2026, brokerages across Japan will begin accepting account applications for the new “Child NISA” program. Open to children aged 0 to 17, the tax-free investment scheme allows up to ¥600,000 per year (¥6 million cumulative) in tax-exempt investment, with full rollout set for January 2027. A thread on 5ch drew attention to warnings that, depending on parents’ wealth and investment know-how, the gap between children could balloon to anywhere from several million yen to as much as ¥25 million by the time they turn 18. Commenters were split over whether this gap is a problem calling for correction or simply the natural result of individual family choices.

Starting October 1, brokerages will finally begin accepting applications to open “Child NISA” accounts. The new tax-free scheme lets children aged 0 to 17 invest in mutual funds, tax-free, up to ¥600,000 a year and ¥6 million total. While brokerages are stirring up excitement with lavish sign-up campaigns, some worry that “parents’ financial literacy could create a hopeless gap between kids by the time they turn 18.” Ahead of the program’s full launch in January 2027, we look into the “future inequality problem” lurking within this new system.

    ¥300,000 a month into Dad's NISA
    ¥300,000 a month into Mom's NISA
¥50,000 a month into the Child NISA

There's just no way that's realistic.

If you can't swing it, you don't have to max it out on the fastest schedule — just fill it up eventually.

On top of the parents' ¥18 million x2,
you now get another ¥6 million in tax-free room.
    Yay, lucky rich family!

That's basically the story here, right?

The parents' NISA accounts will be maxed out by 2028, so after that it's easy street.

For a couple of years you can just dip into savings or sell off some taxable-account holdings to cover it.

What's the point of giving tax breaks to people who already have this much financial slack?
This just looks like a giveaway to the wealthy to me.

The LDP's always favored the rich anyway.

People who actually count as wealthy blew past the NISA limits ages ago.

NISA isn't a system for the wealthy.
It's meant to help the "mass" tier move up to the "upper-mass" tier (standard Japanese wealth-bracket terms).

Anyone above that is already using other methods for tax savings and asset management.

I keep seeing people who clearly have less money than me buying drinks from vending machines.

If they just walked in the side entrance to the supermarket, they could get it for about half price.

Hard to take "life is tough" seriously when I see that.

There's also a theory that young people are already used to inflation.
They don't even blink at paying a lot for ramen anymore.

Smells a lot like the mindset that gets people mistaking credit cards for unlimited money and ending up on the brink of bankruptcy.
    Pretty common among young people.

Everyone will get used to it eventually.
There was even an era when national railway fares doubled in just two years.

    Background and Points of Debate

Child NISA operates as a separate allowance from the adult NISA program (¥3.6 million a year, ¥18 million cumulative), permitting tax-free investment of up to ¥600,000 a year (¥6 million cumulative) under a child’s name, for kids aged 0 to 17. Families where the parents have already maxed out their own NISA allowances are positioned to fill this new allowance sooner, which tends to widen the gap in asset formation among children. The thread split over whether to view this gap as “the result of parental effort and choice” or as “a system that locks in inequality based on household wealth” — with the latter camp arguing that tax breaks like this are, by nature, aimed at families who already have money to spare. At the same time, NISA is a tax exemption, not a guarantee of investment returns — if markets slump, the gap could narrow. The fact that “filling it fastest” doesn’t necessarily translate proportionally into future asset value is a nuance that gets lost in the headline figures alone.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “‘The ¥25 million gap at age 18 is brutal…’ Concerns over young people’s ‘abnormal inequality’ as Child NISA launches, with some parents saying ‘maxing it out fastest is love♥’.”
