  • Nagatomo Yuto: “I Want to Win the Asian Cup and Carry Coach Moriyasu on Our Shoulders”

FC Tokyo’s Yuto Nagatomo (39) sparked discussion on 5ch’s “Geisports Sokuho+” board after saying, in an interview with Hajime Moriyasu — the coach he’s played under for more than eight years — “I want us to win the Asian Cup and carry Coach Moriyasu on our shoulders.” The interview took place on September 3, 2026, and since Nagatomo suffered a serious injury shortly after making the comment, many replies in the thread focused on the timing of the remark itself. Opinions on Moriyasu’s management were also split, with some supporting him staying on and others naming potential successors — Tatsuya Oniki, Go Kuroda, and Tsuyoshi Otsuka — while calling for an early change in leadership.

Defender Yuto Nagatomo (FC Tokyo), 39, has played in five consecutive World Cups. This interview, the third installment, centers on Hajime Moriyasu, the coach he’s fought alongside for more than eight years.

Is Japan hard on Japanese coaches!?

The job of Japan national team coach always comes with brutal pressure. No matter how good the results, every tactical choice and lineup decision draws merciless criticism from the media and fans. Hajime Moriyasu’s eight years in charge were no exception — he’s weathered storms of bashing so fierce it often seemed unreasonable.

    Oh…

    No thanks.
Japan will get even stronger with a tactical wizard in charge, so I'd like Coach Moriyasu to step down as soon as possible.

The JFA probably really wanted Oniki, if we're being honest.
But Oniki has said all along he won't take the national team job.
The only other Japanese option is Machida's Kuroda, so they're stuck going with Otsuka.

Going into the World Cup with Otsuka would be a waste in itself.
Japan's player quality is consistently at a high level now, so they should pay whatever it takes to bring in a coach who actually knows how to win at a World Cup.

That's the only missing piece — there's no other answer.

Background and key points of discussion

Hajime Moriyasu has led the Japan national team for eight years, and Nagatomo, a veteran defender, has fought alongside him for most of that span. Nagatomo’s comment came from an interview conducted on September 3, 2026, and since he suffered a serious injury after the interview took place, much of the thread’s reaction centered on the timing of the remark. Opinions were mainly split on two points: how to evaluate Moriyasu’s management itself, and whether Nagatomo should continue to be involved with the national team going forward. Judging from the replies, Tatsuya Oniki (Kawasaki) is seen as the leading candidate for the next head coach job, though he’s reportedly reluctant to take the national team post; Go Kuroda (Machida) has plenty of results but is seen as too soon for the role; while Tsuyoshi Otsuka (current assistant coach) is viewed as the frontrunner mainly by process of elimination. Neither the article nor the thread directly addresses the actual severity of the injury Nagatomo suffered after the interview, or whether he could still be called up for the Asian Cup itself — a point readers could easily misunderstand.

  • 5ch Users Keep Questioning Why Nobody Notices Detective Conan’s Shinichi Kudo Has ‘Vanished’

On a 5ch forum thread, a lively debate broke out over a long-standing plot hole in Detective Conan. It started with someone pointing out how strange it is that nobody questions the sudden disappearance of Shinichi Kudo, the series’ famous teen detective. From there, the discussion expanded to other timeline inconsistencies that come with such a long-running series — like the fact that, based on calculations from volume 99, only about six months have passed in-story, yet every seasonal event seems to have been covered, or how the crime-ridden Beika Town never seems to get any safer despite the constant murders. Someone also pointed out that Shinichi tells Ran he can’t come home because he’s “chasing a troublesome case,” and the back-and-forth over these small inconsistencies in the setting continued from there.

    1AnonymousOct 1, 2026 19:09
Shinichi Kudo isn't just some random guy — he's a pretty famous high school detective. If a guy like that just vanished without explanation, you'd think someone would say 'hey, that's weird.'

    Re: #99
Early on, Inspector Megure even tells the old man (Kogoro), 'You're the suspicious one, since you're at every murder scene.'

Background and key points of this topic

The inconsistency that “a full cycle of seasonal events gets shown even though only six months have passed since the disappearance” is a classic case of the “time lag” problem that comes with any long-running manga. In Detective Conan, fans have long worked out — based on references in volume 99 — that roughly six months have passed in-story, and this has been a recurring topic of discussion. What split opinion in the thread was whether to simply laugh off the inconsistency as creative convenience, or to accept it as “consistent within the story” on the grounds that Shinichi Kudo does explain the situation to Ran. Commenters also drew comparisons to other long-running series like Kochikame and YuYu Hakusho, framing it as a structural issue common to any manga that runs long enough. Worth noting: this is all based on fan calculation and speculation, not an official timeline or any statement from the author.

Toys 'R' Us was originally the one smashing Japan's existing retail customs to pieces, you know.
Buying direct without going through wholesalers, selling direct, and discounting heavily because of it.
Back when selling at suggested retail price was the norm and toy stores relied on mutual arrangements to adjust stock for peak seasons, this struck real fear into the industry — it even got called the "Toys 'R' Us Shock."
That said, the game side had already developed a new business model where whoever discounted early and bought in bulk won, so it wasn't hit as hard.
Game-specialty franchises kept popping up one after another too.
So maybe you could say it beat the toy stores, but lost to the game stores.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Unlike bankruptcy liquidation, corporate rehabilitation proceedings aim to keep a business running while rebuilding it under court supervision, so filing for the process doesn’t mean every store shuts down immediately. In the thread, posters also recalled how Toys ‘R’ Us Japan originally upended the industry by buying direct without wholesalers and offering steep discounts — a price disruption dubbed the “Toys ‘R’ Us Shock” — a reminder that it was once the company reshaping the industry’s structure, not the other way around. This time the company enters rehabilitation after going insolvent twice, and many posters pointed to the déjà vu of its US parent having already collapsed, along with factors like the falling birthrate and the shift to online shopping. Some posts cited reports about the business being handed over to Don Quijote or Aeon, but it’s worth noting that, as of this article, that information is not confirmed.

  • MS Exec Says Kojima’s New Games Won’t Be Xbox Exclusives — 5ch: “If True, This Is Great”

Xbox’s Asha Sharma reportedly told The New York Times that Hideo Kojima’s upcoming titles ‘OD’ and ‘PHYSINT’ will not be Xbox exclusives. Kojima had previously turned to Microsoft for backing after funding talks with Sony Interactive Entertainment broke down, and word of this exchange getting out set Japan’s 5ch “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board abuzz. While some in the thread welcomed the reversal on exclusivity, others questioned whether the relationship with Sony has truly been mended, raised concerns about release timing and the PS5’s remaining lifespan, and the thread devolved into the usual console-war slapfight.

OD and PHYSINT confirmed for PS multiplatform release

“They will NOT be exclusive! Asha Sharma confirmed to The New York Times that legendary developer Hideo Kojima’s games will not be Xbox exclusives.

She also said work will continue on bringing games considered Xbox “exclusives” over to PlayStation.

After hours of diplomatically dodging questions about competitors, Sharma was uncharacteristically at a loss for words when the conversation turned to the deal for Hideo Kojima's new stealth game, 'Physint.' After smiling at the idea of apologizing to Sony, she shrugged and said she was glad Kojima had chosen to team up with Xbox.

According to people familiar with the matter, the deal came in well below what Xbox typically spends developing a premium game, and included film and TV rights as well. Sharma also made clear that cooperation with Sony would continue, saying, "Competition and collaboration can coexist."

Sharma also clarified that work with Sony would continue: "Competition and collaboration can coexist."

Background and key points of this story

The source here is a New York Times interview with Xbox executive Asha Sharma, and the gist of it is that ‘OD’ and ‘PHYSINT’ will not be made Xbox exclusives — this is not an official announcement that PS5 versions are coming. The thread title’s “release confirmed” is a leap to conclusions; in reality, only a policy of avoiding exclusivity was indicated. The backdrop is that Kojima’s funding negotiations with Sony Interactive Entertainment broke down, after which he continued development with Microsoft’s backing. The NYT report notes the deal came in below what Xbox normally spends developing a premium title and included film and TV rights, suggesting this was more than just an ordinary game development contract. The thread split over whether walking back exclusivity signals reconciliation with Sony or is simply a business decision, and over when a PS5 version might actually arrive — with ‘Death Stranding,’ which took years to reach Xbox after debuting as a PlayStation exclusive, cited as a precedent.

  • VIP board’s first thread of October lights up with autumn flavors and horse-racing talk — 5ch: ‘The sweet potato I worked so hard to grow… rotted’

On the night of October 1, a casual chat thread popped up on 5channel’s Newsoku VIP board, opening with a string of emoticons and emoji. The thread’s creator invited everyone to enjoy the autumn flavors, the Grade 1 horse races, and some camping, and from there a regular known as “Mambo-kun” (ID: OTPWxS6F0) carried the thread along, chiming in with a reply to almost every single post. Talk of discounted saury, horse-racing results, a report that someone’s homegrown sweet potatoes had rotted, a typhoon approaching the Kanto region, and the lingering late-summer heat all got mentioned one after another as the day’s events — with no real disagreement or debate breaking out over anything.

Background and key points of this topic

Threads like this on the VIP board follow a familiar formula: the thread starter opens with a seasonal greeting rendered in ASCII art and emoji, and a regular poster nicknamed “Mambo-kun” (ID: OTPWxS6F0) replies to almost every single post with a stock, template-style response. This thread was no exception — posts about discounted saury, a report that someone’s homegrown sweet potatoes had rotted, and grumbling about an approaching typhoon and lingering summer heat in the Kanto region were simply piled up one after another, with no real argument or disagreement emerging. The horse racing mentioned (the Marine Cup and the Monbetsu races) comes up as casual small talk rather than live commentary or predictions — no specific race details or finishing order appear in the thread itself. Likewise, the weather chat reflects personal impressions rather than an official Japan Meteorological Agency forecast, which is worth keeping in mind.

    Background and Key Points

The “acting manager” referenced in the thread title describes a setup where, for whatever reason, no official manager has been appointed and a coach is running the team in their place. In Nippon Professional Baseball’s pennant race, teams are assigned a “magic number” showing how many more wins they need to clinch the title — which means that even if a team wins out, the rival club’s results can still decide the pennant. In the thread, frustration over the closer’s shaky fielding sat alongside hope for strong pitching, and opinions split over the bullpen moves and substitutions. True to a live-commentary thread, number-driven analysis mixed with emotional highs and lows, with posters’ takes flipping with every swing of the game. The thread also showed off culture unique to these live threads — fans sharing breaking info ahead of official sources, and cheering messages built from ASCII art (AA) depicting players. That kind of board atmosphere gives readers a sense of the on-the-ground energy that numbers alone can’t capture.

  • Hiroshima’s Kaito Kozono Denies Allegations After Contract Non-Renewal — 5ch: “Can’t Trust Him”

After Hiroshima Toyo Carp infielder Kaito Kozono’s contract was not renewed (effectively cutting him from the roster), he once again denied the allegations against him, stating “I have never once used ‘zombie cigarettes’ (a synthetic drug-laced cigarette)” and “I have no ties to anti-social forces (organized crime).” The team has only explained that it decided not to extend his contract because “trust had been damaged,” and no criminal charges or referral to prosecutors have been made. On 5ch, opinions split between those who see the non-renewal as a legitimate exercise of the team’s rights rather than a dismissal, and those uneasy that his future was decided while the allegations remain unresolved.

To all 11 other teams: feel free to sign him, no worries.

True enough ("tashikani" said in 5ch meme-speak) — if he'd been falsely accused, he'd fight it tooth and nail, and the team should be pressing hard too. The fact that neither side is doing that makes it pretty obvious both sides are quietly agreeing to let this end in a gray area.

At the end of the day, whether he paid money to organized crime, hit a woman, or hung around gangster circles and got the police involved, it just adds a negative image — a liability. The team simply judges whether employing him is still worth it despite that negative image. If his skill or popularity outweighs it, he'll get signed again. If not, he won't. That's all there is to it.

    Re: #131
You think that alone is grounds for the team to sign a written pledge to every sponsor saying "our club has no ties to organized crime"?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The backdrop here is a string of incidents within the Hiroshima Carp involving the quasi-synthetic drug known as “zombie cigarettes,” including the arrest of teammate Hazuki. Kozono himself has not faced any legal action such as referral to prosecutors, and since the team framed this simply as “not extending his contract,” it differs legally from a criminal penalty or disciplinary dismissal. What split the thread wasn’t so much whether to believe his denial, but whether it was fair for the team to effectively end his contract before any charges were ever filed. Two points readers might easily get wrong — both raised in the thread but worth keeping in mind as background — are that a “contract expiration” is a different procedure from a dismissal the players’ union could intervene in, and that “zombie cigarettes” themselves are, under current law, treated as a legal product.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Japan Kickboxing Association that Tomioka belongs to is a relatively new organization formed when it split off from the existing New Japan Kickboxing Association, which is why several 5ch users said they’d never heard of it. The statute of limitations for assault causing injury, a point of discussion in the thread, was extended to 10 years under the 2010 revision of the Code of Criminal Procedure — so if the incident in the video happened 6 years ago, the statute hasn’t run out. Users also pointed out the difference between “jishu” (voluntary surrender) and “shuttou” (reporting to authorities): jishu applies only when someone comes forward before investigators have identified them, which is legally different from this case, where the person involved has already been identified — meaning any step forward now would count as shuttou. That said, since prosecuting assault hinges on whether the victim files a formal complaint, the thread didn’t address the fact that the video going viral alone doesn’t necessarily mean an investigation starts.

  • Kappo Komeo Announces Closure

“Kappo Komeo,” the restaurant run by Komeo — also known as a fighter — announced on October 1, 2026 that it will close. The closure follows a food-poisoning incident at the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival in August, after which Komeo issued a renewed apology on social media alongside the closure announcement. On 5ch, the thread debated reports that Staphylococcus aureus had been detected during a health department inspection, the fact that sister restaurant “Kaniwo” remains open, and who would ultimately bear responsibility for damages.

Komeo, the fighter who has been serving as owner-chef of “Kappo Komeo,” announced on the 1st that the restaurant will close. He revealed the news on his official social media.

Opening his post with “I have decided to close Kappo Komeo,” Komeo once again apologized for the food-poisoning incident that occurred at the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival in August. He shared his feelings: “What was missing? As someone who serves food, was I really facing up to my customers’ lives and health? The more I think about it, the more I feel my own immaturity, how lax my awareness was, and the weight of responsibility that comes with running a restaurant.” He went on, “Going through this has made me realize that as a cook, as a business owner, and as a person, I need to confront my own weaknesses. That’s why I’m closing Kappo Komeo.”

Trying to go upscale was the mistake.
A casual diner fits his image way better.
Before worrying about brand image and profit, he needed to grind it out properly and honestly.

Food poisoning broke out from the ramen at "Kappo Komeo"
    ↓
In response to this incident, staff from both Kappo Komeo and Kaniwo underwent hygiene training together and thoroughly reviewed the restaurants' sanitation management.
We disinfected using a solution based on sodium hypochlorite, and re-inspected sanitation conditions wherever necessary.
Going forward, we will enforce strict hygiene management, including monthly stool tests for employees, daily staff health checks, and thorough store cleaning, disinfection, and ingredient management.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

This closure traces back to a food-poisoning incident at the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival in August. While Salmonella was identified as the official cause, reports say a swab test of the restaurant during the health department’s investigation also detected Staphylococcus aureus, fueling criticism of lax hygiene management. The thread’s main point of debate was how damages would be handled after the closure. Separate from the corporate entity that runs “Kappo Komeo,” the ramen shop “Kaniwo,” also tied to Komeo, remains open, and opinions split over whether liability for damages would fall on Komeo personally or be limited to the closed restaurant’s corporation. Note that some of the specific claims circulating about the restaurant’s hygiene conditions come from unverified sources, and posts whose accuracy could not be confirmed were not used in this article.

  • Flat 35 Mortgage Rate Hits Record High of 3.830% — 5ch Reacts: ‘Who’d Actually Pick This?’

On October 1, the Japan Housing Finance Agency announced the applicable interest rates for October on “Flat 35,” a fixed-rate home loan with a maximum term of 35 years. The lowest rate, applied when the loan amount is 90% or less of the home’s purchase price, rose to 3.830% per year — the highest level since the system was revised in October 2017. On 5ch, a thread saw opinions clash between those who argue you should just buy a house outright in cash and those who say it’s more rational to take out a loan while rates are still relatively low and put spare cash into investments instead, with the debate spreading into whether new-builds or resale homes are the better deal, and whether renting beats owning.

    Don't buy a house with a loan.
My old man saved up and bought his place outright in cash.
Did the same thing when he rebuilt it, too.

That's the thinking of someone with no financial literacy.

You keep your cash and deliberately borrow instead, so you can invest it at a return higher than the loan rate.

People keep living in the good locations, so they don't come cheap.

My index investments are over 100 million yen. The mortgage tax deduction (minus 1%) still has about 6 more years to run, so I'm doing just fine.

Background and key points of this story

Flat 35 is a fully fixed-rate home loan offered jointly by the Japan Housing Finance Agency and private financial institutions, with its rate revised monthly in line with movements in government bond yields, the benchmark for long-term interest rates. This month’s 3.830% is the highest level since the October 2017 system revision, reflecting the ongoing rise in long-term rates. The thread was dominated by a clash between the “pay cash outright” camp and the “borrow while rates are still low and invest the spare cash” camp, but what went largely unmentioned is that, since Flat 35 is a fixed-rate loan to begin with, future rises in variable rates won’t directly affect its repayment amount. Also, the strategy of skipping early repayment and keeping a long loan can swing either way in terms of profit and loss depending on how long the mortgage tax deduction applies and how investment returns actually turn out — it’s not a simple case of one approach being clearly better.
