  • New Queen Movie Opens in October: 5ch Users Push Back Hard on “One-Hit Wonder Overseas” Claim

To mark the 80th anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s birth, Queen: Budapest — a concert film documenting the band’s 1986 Budapest show — opens in theaters on October 7. The release prompted a music critic’s piece on Queen’s enduring appeal, which was picked up on 5ch [Japan’s largest anonymous forum network] and sparked a flood of comments about favorite tracks and “greatest album” debates. Some pushed for the Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack era, others questioned the synth-heavy direction from The Game onward, and opinions split sharply over claims like “they only caught on here because of a Kimutaku drama” [a nickname for actor Takuya Kimura] and “overseas they rank below Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd.”

2026 marks the 80th anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s birth. The historic 1986 Budapest concert, captured at the peak of Queen’s powers, hits theaters October 7 as Queen: Budapest. More than half a century on, why does Queen still command such devotion? Music critic Yuichi Masuda — who has followed the band in real time since 1975, later served as editor-in-chief of Music Life magazine, and supervised the Japanese subtitles for Bohemian Rhapsody — breaks down the appeal.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Queen debuted in 1973, and even after Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, the band stayed popular through greatest-hits compilations and tributes; the 2018 hit film Bohemian Rhapsody further widened their fanbase among younger listeners in Japan. Greatest Hits is considered one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history, so the thread’s claims that Queen is a “one-hit wonder overseas” or “inferior to Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd” don’t necessarily line up with actual sales figures. The new film Queen: Budapest documents the final show of the 1986 Magic Tour, widely known as one of the last major concerts Freddie performed despite a worsening throat condition. The thread’s disagreement centered mainly on which album era counts as Queen’s classic period — those favoring early work like Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack clashed with those who saw the synth-driven sound from The Game onward as a step down.

  • Formerly “Indians”: 1 Year, 4 Months After Renaming, Recognition Stuck at “About 60%, Still a Tough Battle”

Chonmage Ramen, the comedy duo formerly known as Indians, appeared at a Tokyo event on October 1 and revealed that one year and four months after their name change, public recognition of the new duo name is “about 60%, still a tough struggle.” In a thread on 5ch’s Geinou Supo Sokuhou+ board, users ran through examples of renames that worked out (Summers, Cream Stew) alongside past cases where a new name never stuck and the act reverted to its old one (Animal Kaidan, Rafurekuran’s switch to Cotton, etc.), fueling a growing consensus that “duos who actually succeed after renaming are the minority.” Meanwhile, some questioned the naming sense itself, while others had fun pitching alternative name ideas.

    Thu, Oct 1, 3:12 PM

Comedy duo Chonmage Ramen attended a sampling event for Nobel Confectionery’s “VC-3000 Throat Tablets” in Tokyo on the 1st.

Akihiro Tabuchi, who showed up in a yellow full-body tights costume, spent about 30 minutes handing out the product. Mingling with everyone from kids to foreign visitors, he was thrilled: “I’m so grateful it was such a huge hit. If I get fussed over like this, I want to dress like this all the time — I had almost 100 times more photos taken of me than usual.” His partner Kimu laughed along: “He’s practically sparkling. If he’d bring this look to our manzai act too, I’d actually look forward to smacking him.”

This is something Arita can only say now that time's passed — back then they pushed the line "we got popular because we renamed!", but actually they were already getting popular, and he genuinely hated being forced to rename right as their old name "Kaijarisuigyo" was finally catching on.
On top of that, he had to keep saying "we got popular because we renamed!" even though — as he's been grumbling lately — they would've made it without the rename too!

    Re: #70
Guess it's the best name to them — someone offered them a good one, but they pushed through with their own pick anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The rename from Indians to Chonmage Ramen reportedly took place in 2024 out of consideration for Native Americans. Opinions in the thread split over whether the slow uptake comes down to “the naming sense itself” or simply “a lack of exposure and name recognition” to begin with. While Summers and Cream Stew were cited as rare examples of a rename actually sticking, cases like Animal Kaidan and 2700 — which flip-flopped between their new and old names — were also raised, underscoring just how much a rename can affect a comedian’s brand. The original article also notes that despite the low 60% recognition figure, the duo themselves seemed in high spirits at the event — suggesting a gap between how the performers see it and how well the public has actually caught on.

  • Itano Tomomi’s Changing-Room Video: Hotel Confirms It Approved the Footage in Advance — 5ch: “So Itano Was Right All Along?”

A controversy has been brewing over a family-trip vlog that former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano posted in September, which included footage filmed in the changing room of a public bath. It has now emerged that the hotel where she stayed, The Ritz-Carlton Nikko, reviewed and approved the video before it was published. Josei Seven Plus obtained LINE messages exchanged between Itano’s side and hotel staff and reported on October 1 that the hotel had even requested changes to the video’s wording. On 5ch, opinions split: some said “so Itano was right all along,” while others questioned the hotel’s own judgment in allowing changing-room footage to be filmed at all, and some speculated it may have been a promotional arrangement.

    October 1, 2026

Regarding a family-trip vlog posted on September 3 by former AKB48 member and talent Tomomi Itano (400,000 subscribers), it has been confirmed that the hotel where she stayed, The Ritz-Carlton Nikko, reviewed the video before publication and approved its content. Josei Seven Plus reported this on October 1, revealing details that had not previously come to light.

At issue was a scene in the video “[Summer Vacation] A Family Trip to Nikko with the Three of Us Again After a While [vlog]” showing her drying her eldest daughter’s hair in the changing room of the public bath. On September 5, Itano explained on X that the filming had been done with special permission from the hotel, and apologized.

To begin with, it's common-sense-lacking for a YouTuber or influencer to film in a changing room at all, and it's equally common-sense-lacking for the hotel to have allowed it

There's a total lack of morals, ethics, and decency here

Frankly, I wouldn't want to stay at a hotel that lets YouTubers or influencers film there in the first place

    It's obviously for promotion
These days, having an influencer or celebrity stay and turn it into a video is way more effective than advertising yourself

Background and Key Points of This Story

The changing-room footage was part of the vlog published on September 3, and on September 5 Itano explained on X that she had “obtained the hotel’s permission.” This latest report backs that up, and the new fact here is the LINE exchange showing the hotel reviewed the video itself before publication and even gave notes on the wording of her comment. The thread split mainly into two camps. One is the clash between those who say “Itano was right / she’s the victim” and those who say “the hotel itself was out of line for allowing changing-room filming at all” — both sides accept the fact of the prior review but land on opposite conclusions about it. The other is speculation that the hotel’s reason for pre-checking the video was promotional; it’s worth noting this isn’t directly confirmed by the LINE screenshot or the reporting itself — it’s purely speculation within the thread. There was also disagreement in the replies over whether it was Itano’s side or the hotel’s side that made the LINE exchange public, which can’t be settled from the reporting alone.

  • Australian Man Sues Hakodate City for ¥400 Million After Falling From Bridge at Famous Photo Spot

It’s been reported that an Australian man who suffered a spinal injury after falling from a bridge near the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, a popular tourist spot in Hakodate, Hokkaido, has sued the city for ¥400 million in damages. A photo accompanying the original article shows a “Caution: Danger of Falling” sign that appears to have been installed after the accident. On 5ch, opinions split between those who stressed that the railing fell below the national safety standard (110cm high) and argued the city bears responsibility for its upkeep, and those who said the danger was obvious at a glance, making it the visitor’s own responsibility. Several posts also pointed out that other structures — such as Inuyama Castle and Hinomisaki Lighthouse in Izumo — likewise keep low railings in place to preserve their historic appearance.

And unlike Japan, the railings there are serious business — cross them and it's basically certain death.

That's why there have been repeated fatal falls, including a Japanese tourist who tried to climb over the railing at Niagara Falls for a photo.
Climbing over with a Japanese sense of safety is dangerous.

    Re: #92
It didn't meet the national standard at all and there wasn't even a warning, so it seems like the city could reasonably be found at fault for negligence.
For reference, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's standard for railings meant to prevent pedestrians and cyclists from falling is 110cm.

Keeping a railing that doesn't meet current standards because it's a historic structure is fine in itself, but since the danger was foreseeable, the city has a duty to either implement safety measures or put up a warning.

Sign put up after the Australian's accident.

    So much for the scenery…

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The area around Hakodate’s Red Brick Warehouse district prioritizes preserving its historic streetscape, and the railing on the bridge in question appears to remain below the 110cm height standard set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Structures that predate current codes aren’t illegal just for falling short of today’s standards, but if an accident was foreseeable, the party responsible for managing the structure can still be obligated to take safety measures or post warnings. Opinion in the thread split between the view that the risk of falling was visually obvious, making it the visitor’s own responsibility, and the view that the city can be held liable for negligent management, as the administrator of public infrastructure, for leaving a substandard railing in place — with how to interpret the sign installed after the accident serving as the dividing line. It’s also worth noting, something the headline alone doesn’t convey, that the ¥400 million figure is merely the amount claimed in the lawsuit; the amount a court would actually award would be determined separately, factoring in things like comparative negligence.

Seibu Shibuya, the department store in Udagawa-cho, Shibuya, closed its doors after 58 years of history, with crowds chanting “Seibu! Shibuya!” on its final day. In the 5ch News Speed+ thread discussing the Asahi Shimbun report, posters traded nostalgic memories of the cultural presence of the Saison Group under Seiji Tsutsumi, debated the bright and dark sides of redevelopment projects like Shibuya Hands and Sakura Stage, and pointed out that the department store format itself is becoming unsustainable as the middle class shrinks. Opinions were also split on whether Shibuya’s redevelopment counts as a success or a failure.

Department stores are polarizing as the middle class vanishes — places like Mitsukoshi and Isetan have gone all in on big spenders and inbound tourists, but that's honestly loaded with ways to fail.
Inbound tourism evaporates the instant the yen strengthens, and the big-spending elderly crowd keeps shrinking as it ages out. They cut loose the middle class that used to prop them up, so now they can't withstand even a mild downturn — and for the generation with no childhood memory of ever going to a department store, it won't even register as an option once they're grown. At best they'll hit the basement food hall, or just walk through.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Seibu Shibuya was operated by the Saison Group, a separate company with no capital ties to Seibu Railway/the Seibu Group, which owns the Saitama Seibu Lions baseball team. It’s well known that founders and brothers Seiji and Yoshiaki Tsutsumi had different mothers and a famously strained relationship — a distinction that comes up repeatedly in the thread, since sharing the “Seibu” name alone makes the two easy to confuse. Meanwhile, the recent struggles of department stores are said to stem from stores that failed to hold onto middle-class customers being weeded out, unlike chains such as Mitsukoshi Isetan that have specialized in inbound tourists and wealthy clientele — a trend that overlaps with the split in opinion over whether Shibuya’s overall redevelopment counts as a success or a failure.

  • Ijuin Hikaru Apologizes for Calling Crayon Shin-chan Writer’s Episode “Boring”

On TBS Radio’s “Ijuin Hikaru: Shinya no Bakajikara,” Ijuin Hikaru’s remark that the September 19 episode of Crayon Shin-chan, “It’s the Nohara Couple’s Afternoon,” was “boring enough to make your legs give out” sparked controversy. The episode barely featured the show’s protagonist, Shinnosuke, and after screenwriter Sho Hasumi responded on his own radio show, Ijuin apologized during the ending segment of the September 28 late-night broadcast, saying, “I caused Hasumi a great deal of trouble.” Reactions on 5ch split between those praising Ijuin for apologizing sincerely, those who felt no apology was needed since he was just sharing his opinion, and those who rewatched the episode themselves and weighed in on its merits.

Talent Ijuin Hikaru appeared on the late-night broadcast of “JUNK Ijuin Hikaru: Shinya no Bakajikara” (TBS Radio) on September 28 and addressed, during the show’s ending segment, the controversy that had erupted following the previous week’s broadcast.

The episode Hasumi wrote was the September 19 installment of Crayon Shin-chan, “It’s the Nohara Couple’s Afternoon” — an unusual episode that barely featured Shinnosuke, focusing instead on a conversation between his parents, Hiroshi and Misae.

On the late-night broadcast on the 21st, Ijuin had said the episode was “boring enough to make your legs give out,” among other remarks. Hasumi responded on his own radio show, revealing that he had been a listener of Ijuin’s program back in his college days.

Come to think of it, you don't see Kanda Hakuzan (a rakugo/kodan storyteller) on TV much anymore.
Maybe his tongue got a little too sharp and people stopped liking him.
    20AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:57
Sure it was boring, but wasn't that kind of the point — a dialogue-driven episode built around that concept?

He was already teasing it on last week's "Towazugatari." He said: "The movie I watched for the first time in twenty-odd years was boring enough to make your legs give out — say that and people call you an out-of-touch old man, but this is an homage to Ijuin. This year's buzzword of the year is either 'Riku/Ryu' (the figure-skating pair's nickname) or 'boring enough to make your legs give out.'"
That recording was made before Hasumi's rebuttal, so he'll probably really dig into it on tomorrow's broadcast.

Like it says in Re: #56, Hasumi actually accepted the "it was boring" opinion —
his pushback was about other stuff, telling him not to spread misinformation.

He probably couldn't find a solid source for that, so he figured apologizing would let him fudge it and put the whole thing to rest.
    79AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:27
Hasumi's not exactly acting high and mighty either — he shows up on silly variety shows on Abema and the like.

    Re: #100
The "peanut gallery" means people who criticize without listening, just going off summary sites and the like.
Kuruma's different, since he actually talked to Hasumi directly.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Ijuin Hikaru: Shinya no Bakajikara” is a long-running flagship TBS Radio program hosted by Ijuin Hikaru, known for his trademark style of giving blunt, honest opinions. Sho Hasumi is a broadcast writer and actor who, among other work, writes for Crayon Shin-chan; the episode at the center of this controversy, “It’s the Nohara Couple’s Afternoon,” was an unusually structured installment that barely featured the show’s protagonist. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much whether the apology itself was warranted, but a clash between two positions: that there’s nothing wrong with stating an honest opinion, versus that remarks from someone with influence require more consideration. The real sticking point was where to draw the line on who gets to criticize what, and how. Some commenters also pointed out that Hasumi himself never disputed the “boring” opinion — Ijuin’s apology was actually about a separate issue — meaning that treating the apology as a simple retraction of his review may not match what actually happened.

  • Take-Two Signs Long-Term Xbox Publishing Deal with Microsoft

Game publisher Take-Two Interactive has signed a new long-term publisher license agreement with Microsoft for Xbox, according to an X (formerly Twitter) earnings-news account. Take-Two is the parent company of Rockstar Games, maker of the Grand Theft Auto series. On 5ch’s gaming hardware/industry board, opinions split over how this deal might affect future software releases. Some argued it’s just a standard publishing agreement premised on multi-platform releases rather than an exclusivity deal, while others pointed out that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) hasn’t announced a similar long-term agreement, voicing concern over PlayStation’s future prospects.

    Well, more like Xbox —
they're probably going all-in on Steam and Xbox-on-PC.

Given how badly Sony's first-party titles have been flopping, and how ruthlessly Sony's been cutting losses,
it makes sense to pivot toward multiplatform: MS + Steam, Sony + Nintendo.

Honestly the PS5 Pro optimization for GTA6 makes zero sense at this point.

Given the file size, you'd need 3 or 4 discs, so that'd really rack up the cost.

It's so SIE can't pull its usual interference — that's the whole point.
    72AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:49
This is a publishing agreement — a contract to release software on MS hardware — it's not like Microsoft's the only one paying for something here.
The article's basically saying they consolidated a bunch of scattered smaller deals into one, with an eye on the future.

If it's just a publishing agreement, Sony has those too, right?
    74AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:53
    Re: #72
Not every company gets a long-term publishing deal like this.
It's also a way of signaling to users that the games are guaranteed to actually come out.
And it's a final nail against anyone trying to interfere down the line.
The long-term commitment is the whole point.
    75AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:53

    They didn't extend it, though.
    76AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:55

Part of why this is a big deal is that SIE hasn't done the same.

but there's not even a hint of one.
    87AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:09
Here we go again, making a big deal out of something pointless.
    89AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:11

    It does matter.
It keeps out the kind of company that might suddenly decide on a whim to block something or slap on exclusive content.
    90AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:12
    Re: #87
There were cynics like this when Microsoft and Sega teamed up too lol
Though since Persona still comes out on PlayStation, I guess you could argue it still falls under "pointless posturing."

    Background and Key Points

This agreement is a “publisher license agreement,” not a declaration of hardware exclusivity. In fact, Grand Theft Auto VI, developed by Take-Two’s subsidiary Rockstar Games, is still slated for release on PS5 — and within the thread, posts mistaking this for an exclusivity deal were corrected by others noting it doesn’t override existing agreements. What drew more attention was the absence of any announcement that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has signed a similarly long-term deal. Combined with the lack of clarity around the timing of Sony’s next-generation console, this became a talking point about a possible gap in platform strategy — though it’s worth noting this is purely speculation from 5ch users, not an official statement from Sony.

  • “I Couldn’t Admit I Just Wanted a Vacation”: City Worker Fired for Faking Sick Leave to Travel Abroad — Caught When Her Boss Spotted Her at the Station

A 45-year-old female section chief in Yokosuka City was fired for misconduct after having an acquaintance doctor write her a fake medical certificate, fraudulently taking 10 days of sick leave, and going on an overseas trip during that time. The case came to light when her supervisor happened to spot her at a train station while she was supposedly on sick leave; she initially insisted “I really was sick.” The thread’s discussion grew from a simple “couldn’t she have just used paid vacation?” into the institutional differences between sick leave and paid leave, and even the criminal referral of the doctor who wrote the fake certificate — with many commenters also doubting whether the “chance” discovery was really a coincidence.</parameter>

<parameter name="analysis">Unlike paid leave, sick leave for local government employees in Japan can’t be taken for just any reason — it’s technically only granted on the basis of a medical certificate, and in practice taking it doesn’t hurt bonus evaluations as much even once the day count passes a certain threshold. The thread split between those who saw this as “a workplace culture that makes it hard to take paid leave” and those who called it “straight-up fraud — drawing a salary on fake sick leave” — with the latter view dominating. Many commenters also suggested the boss may not have spotted her by pure chance but was already suspicious and looking into it, hinting there may have been warning signs beforehand rather than a single chance sighting. It’s also worth noting — a detail easy to miss in the main article — that the doctor was separately referred to prosecutors for writing the false certificate, so the fallout extends well beyond just her dismissal.

On the 30th, Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture dismissed a 45-year-old female section chief from its Welfare and Children’s Affairs Department for misconduct, after she had an acquaintance doctor draw up a false medical certificate so she could go on an overseas trip, fraudulently took 10 days of sick leave, and collected her salary for that period. The city also filed a criminal complaint against the doctor on the 28th, citing a suspected violation of the Medical Practitioners’ Act.

According to the announcement, the section chief fraudulently took sick leave from June 7 to 16, during which she also received roughly ¥104,000 in salary. Her supervisor spotted her at a train station when she was supposed to be on sick leave, and questioned her after she returned from her trip, but she repeatedly insisted “I really was sick.” When the city checked with the clinic and doctor, there was no record of her ever being examined. She reportedly said, “I couldn’t bring myself to tell my workplace I was taking paid leave to go on a trip.”

Actually, since she's already been dismissed for misconduct, that counts as "social punishment already served," so she basically gets treated as innocent and

  • Last Year’s Batting Champion Kaito Kozono Cut Loose — 5ch: “Fastest Release in League History”

On October 1, the Hiroshima Toyo Carp notified four players — infielder Kaito Kozono (26), infielder Masaya Yano, infielder Seita Maekawa, and outfielder Shunsuke Tamura — that the club would not renew their contracts for next season. Kozono won the batting title last year as part of a batting “double crown,” and also suited up for Japan at this year’s WBC, making him a core player — so the notice from the club is being treated as highly unusual. On 5ch threads, posts expressing shock at the sudden announcement poured in, mixed with comments recapping Kozono’s background and school history, and speculation about where he might sign next.

All four become free agents. Heading into a new season, the club judged it could no longer build a relationship of trust with these four…

Background and Key Points of This Story

Each year, NPB roster-cut (non-renewal) notices become official starting October 1, with clubs typically announcing in bulk, around this time, which players won’t have their contracts renewed for the following season. Kozono won the batting title last year as part of a batting “double crown” and also represented Japan at this year’s WBC — an accomplished player by any measure — which is why his being included in this round of notices is being seen as an unusual call. Within the thread, beyond the reason the club officially gave for the non-renewal, many posts hinted at some kind of behind-the-scenes trouble, but no evidence was offered for any claim of criminal involvement, and nothing of that sort is confirmed by the official announcement. At the same time, other posts defended him, insisting he “didn’t do it,” so opinions remain split. As for where he might land next, several team names came up, including the Hanshin Tigers and SoftBank Hawks, but all of it remains speculation.

  • Comedian Shiro Ito to Retire on His 90th Birthday Next June, Capping a Nearly 70-Year Career

Comedic actor Shiro Ito (89) announced on October 1st that he will retire from show business upon turning 90 on June 15th next year. Since joining the “Laughing Companions” (Warau Nakama) theater troupe as a trainee in 1958, he has spent roughly 70 years in the industry, rising to fame with the comedy trio Tempuku Trio before building a long career as an actor as well. The stated reason is his declining physical condition. On 5channel threads, posters expressed shock (“He’s already 90?!”), fondly recalled his roles in shows like “Oedo de Gozaru” and “The Ito Family’s Dinner Table,” voiced concern over signs of decline heard on his radio appearances, and speculated about why he chose to announce his retirement at this particular time.

Comedic actor Shiro Ito (89) announced on the 1st that he will withdraw from show business upon his 90th birthday on June 15th next year, citing his declining physical condition. Since becoming a trainee at the “Laughing Companions” theater troupe in 1958, this legend — who made his mark not only in comedy but also as an actor over roughly 70 years — has decided to bring his journey to a close.

Ito first became interested in theater through the influence of his eldest brother, who ran an amateur troupe. After passing through “Laughing Companions” and the Hitoshi Ishii Troupe, he rose to fame as part of the comedy trio Tempuku Trio alongside Shinsuke Minami and Mutsuo Totsuka.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since becoming a trainee at the “Laughing Companions” theater troupe in 1958, Shiro Ito has built a roughly 70-year career spanning the comedy trio Tempuku Trio, TV appearances in shows like “Oedo de Gozaru” and “The Ito Family’s Dinner Table,” and memorable villain roles in Juzo Itami’s films. Japanese entertainers often remain “active for life” well into old age, so announcing a retirement tied to a birthday more than nine months away is relatively unusual. In the thread, comments lamenting his age-related decline mixed with questions about why he chose to announce it now. Note that the official announcement cited only “declining physical condition” — speculation in the posts about memory or speech problems came from commenters themselves, not from Ito or his agency. Some posts also appeared to confuse him with other people or other shows, such as questions about the survival status of other “The Ito Family’s Dinner Table” cast members.
