  • PS5’s 2026 First-Party Lineup Looks Thin — Fans Say It’s All Riding on GTA6

With 2026 down to its final three months and the year-end sales rush setting in, a thread titled “The Sense of Stagnation Hanging Over PlayStation” went up on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. Posters noted that confirmed PS5 titles for next year are limited to just a handful — Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion, Kingdom Hearts IV — and that even the first-party lineup is dominated by titles already flagged as struggling, like Marathon and Saros. As for GTA6, billed as this year’s biggest showcase title, posters also raised concerns about the PS5 Pro’s supply shortage and the mismatch in timing with Sony’s plans to eventually phase out physical media, with opinions split on whether GTA6’s sales momentum will eventually fade.

With 2026 down to its final three months, the game industry is heading into the year-end sales season.
Nintendo is hoping for a strong start with "The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary," releasing the Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive title "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" on November 5.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is marking Xbox's 25th anniversary with plans for an Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition and a matching controller.

GTA6's coming with timed exclusivity, so why the doom and gloom?
Oh wait — it's because everything up to now has been so-so, and we're down to pinning all our hopes on GTA6.
    25AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:18
If you look at the current situation and don't pull out at this point, you'd have to be a grand-slam-level idiot.
Spending hundreds of billions of yen to keep churning out unsellable "poli-cor" (politically-correct-driven) games — that's basically running a charity.
    50AnonymousOct 1, 2026 12:11
    Re: #25
More than charity, isn't it basically funding whatever agenda is pushing "poli-cor" even further?
    27AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:19
The fact that GTA6 isn't really driving hardware sales right now must be disappointing for the industry.
Sony bears heavy responsibility for letting the PS5 Pro run short on supply at such a critical moment.
    36AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:46
    Re: #27
I think GTA itself will sell like crazy, but
that's really about the gameplay being good — it's not the kind of game people are desperate to get their hands on right away for the story or anything.

Since they probably won't make a new entry for another 10 years anyway,
I feel like a lot of people are fine just waiting for a PC port, or for it to go cheap, free, or show up as a freebie.
    29AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:24
Are the people going on about the PS5 Pro actually under the impression it runs at 60fps?
Rather than waste money on that thing, saving up for a PS6 is the smarter move.

Are PlayStation fans just trying to screw each other over at this point?

What's confirmed for next year is…
    Persona 4 Reload (100k)
    FF7 Revelation (250k)
    Wilds Master Edition: Ascendance (150k)
    Resident Evil Code: Veronica (200k)
    KH4 (200k)
    …is that about it?

Might actually turn out better than this year, who knows.

Even when titles come out, they're not hitting the expected numbers, so sales keep sliding.
Out of those, FF7's 250k and Monster Hunter's 150k look especially shaky —
it's obvious a chunk of those sales will get siphoned off by Switch 2.
Resident Evil probably won't sell as well as RE9 either.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Since 2024, Sony itself has stated it’s moving toward a future without physical media on PS5, and the thread repeatedly pointed out that GTA6’s release timing clashes with that stated direction. It’s also worth noting that the sales estimates floated for titles like FF7 Revelation and the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion are just personal guesses extrapolated from previous entries, not official figures. Where opinion in the thread split was over whether GTA6 can actually drive the platform forward, and how seriously to take the slump in first-party titles. Posters even disagreed on the underlying premise — unlike the PS4 era, how large is the audience that actually buys a PlayStation for its first-party lineup in the first place? That disagreement points to a broader difficulty: you can’t gauge the real state of the market just by counting how many new releases are coming.

  • Rakuten Mobile’s au Roaming Coverage Slashed Starting October — 5ch Reacts: ‘Are You Kidding Me?’

KDDI has released its roaming coverage map for Rakuten Mobile covering October onward. Replacing the coverage that was in place through the end of September, the roaming area will now be scaled back in stages, premised on Rakuten building out its own base stations. Roaming has already ended in Tokyo’s 23 wards, Nagoya, and Osaka, and the newly released map reveals major cutbacks now hitting Yokohama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and other cities. Thread posters reported one after another that their homes or workplaces had dropped out of the coverage area, and opinion split over whether the blame lies with Rakuten’s slow base-station rollout or with KDDI’s handling of the situation.

KDDI has published its roaming area map for Rakuten Mobile for October onward. Roaming under the previous framework ends as of the end of September.

From October, roaming will end in areas where Rakuten already provides its own coverage. For other areas, on the “basic premise” (quoted verbatim from KDDI’s announcement) that Rakuten will build out its own base stations, KDDI will keep helping maintain infrastructure in some regions for a set period. The roaming coverage area will be scaled back in stages.

Roaming has already ended in Tokyo’s 23 wards, Nagoya, and Osaka. The newly published map lets users toggle between the pre-end-of-September and post-October situations, making it clear that roaming coverage will shrink dramatically in places like Yokohama, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.

This map feels kind of malicious, honestly.
They should publish it side-by-side with Rakuten's own coverage map.
    6AnonymousOct 1, 2026 02:04
    Re: #4
KDDI has no need to do that and probably couldn't anyway.
Rakuten should just publish it themselves — the real issue is that Rakuten's own coverage map doesn't distinguish between areas covered by its own base stations and areas propped up by au.

My place dropped out of the roaming area too.
That probably means indoor reception is going to get worse — houses squeezed between apartment buildings, or inside reinforced-concrete buildings, could get rough.
Rakuten Mobile users might already be finding it harder to connect since this morning.
    If something feels off…

    20AnonymousOct 1, 2026 07:22
There was that image claiming Rakuten Mobile covers 98% of Kanto, but around the Fukiage area it's shaky — gets congested around lunchtime and just isn't great.

    26AnonymousOct 1, 2026 09:45
The people who kept saying 'Rakuten works fine enough' must be screaming bloody murder right now.
Since au set up a paid roaming option, there's no choice but to add it on and use that.
But if you're going that far, you might as well just switch to au outright.

If it shows "Rakuten" next to the signal icon, does that mean it's Rakuten's own line?
    38AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:13
    Re: #31
You can't tell unless you install an app that shows which frequency band you're connected to.
    If it's the 1.7GHz band (Band 3), that's Rakuten's own network.
    33AnonymousOct 1, 2026 12:27
They already hit their subscriber target, so they should easily be able to afford building more base stations.
    34AnonymousOct 1, 2026 12:41

If it doesn't connect, you can just walk away — simple as that.
I keep using it because I'm drawn in by the free calls.
Since I started with Rakuten up through today, I bought my device outright, pay the ¥1,400/month service fee with Rakuten Points, and haven't paid a single yen beyond that (lol)
    41AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:17
Even leaving tethering on nonstop only costs ¥2,980, so I was using several terabytes a month lol
    42AnonymousOct 1, 2026 13:18
By the way, nothing's changed for Rakuten Mobile as of today — in Tokyo, both at home and at work.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Rakuten Mobile has been filling its coverage gaps through “roaming” — borrowing au’s network — on a temporary basis until its own base-station rollout is complete. This roaming arrangement was always planned to shrink in stages, ending first in city centers, and the map released this time is the latest version of that rollback. Opinion in the thread split between those who blame Rakuten’s slow infrastructure buildout for the shrinking coverage and those who sympathize with KDDI’s position, having lent its infrastructure for free all this time. Two points are easy to get wrong here: this announcement isn’t a nationwide, all-at-once service cutoff but a region-by-region phased reduction, and subscribers can’t easily tell whether they’re on roaming or on Rakuten’s own network without checking the frequency band themselves.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

TNX operates separately from Hello! Project — it’s the company Tsunku♂ has personally run for idol and music projects, having launched groups like Possibo and Spicy Choco over the years. The thread’s recurring “it didn’t sell” criticism needs to be weighed against the fact that, even though these are also Tsunku productions, they differ from Up-Front’s Hello! Project groups in scale of promotion and backing — it isn’t simply a matter of the songs themselves being bad. There’s also the point raised about Berryz Kobo’s best-of album: “Elegant Girl” appears on the regular-edition CD but is missing from streaming, which may come down to the rights for that track sitting with TNX. Within the thread, the view that “Tsunku has no talent for business” coexisted with “the songs themselves are good” — the debate centered on separating his reputation as a songwriter from his reputation as a manager.

  • Should Japan Introduce a “Singles Tax”? 5ch Reacts: “A Childless Tax I’d Get, But a Singles Tax Makes No Sense”

A thread about a “singles tax” posted on 5ch’s “Live Report General” board was getting a lot of traction. The original poster opened by declaring that taxing single people “really can’t wait any longer,” but most replies pushed back, saying “there’s no rational reason to tax single people” and “a childless tax I’d get, but a singles tax makes no sense,” with opinion split over whether the tax should apply to all single people or be limited to those without children. Replies pointing out loopholes in the proposed system — such as how it would affect people undergoing fertility treatment, single-parent households, and the elderly — were also prominent.

    Re: #96
If that's the reason, then it should really be a childless tax, not a singles tax

Background and Key Points of This Debate

There is no tax actually named the “singles tax.” The term caught on online because of the child and childcare support levy system that took full effect in April 2026, which is collected as a surcharge on health insurance premiums — meaning the burden falls on single people regardless of whether they have children, which is why it came to be nicknamed a “de facto singles tax.” Where opinion in the thread split was over where to draw the line: taxing all single people versus limiting it to people without children (the so-called “childless tax”), with many posters criticizing a design that fails to account for people undergoing fertility treatment or single-parent households. Whether this would actually help the declining birthrate was never demonstrated, and citing the consumption tax as a precedent, some worried it could become “a foot in the door” for the burden to keep climbing after introduction.

  • Are the ‘Mōre-mi’ Newcomers Indifferent to Morning Musume? 5ch: ‘Who Needs Respect Anyway’

On a Hello! Project discussion board, a debate ignited over a post suggesting that so-called “Mōre-mi newcomers” — new fans said to have flowed in from Juice=Juice (“mōre” being slang for looking extra glam or photogenic, often via makeup/editing) — lack respect for Morning Musume, the group that has long served as Hello! Project’s flagship act. The thread saw a sharp clash between the counterargument that “they’re a separate group, so there’s no reason to show respect” and the criticism that “this dismisses the history Morning Musume has built up over the years.” The discussion also touched on generational gaps, including the uproar over Morning Musume’s suspension following a member scandal, and the fact that younger fans never experienced the group’s golden age in the first place.

It's actually the other way around — the old guard gets to act big precisely because the current members are selling well.
If the group had flopped and disbanded, the OGs would have nowhere left to appear.
Yuko Nakazawa understands that much, at least.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Hello! Project is the umbrella talent-agency framework encompassing multiple idol groups, and Morning Musume has long held the position of its most storied, flagship act. Juice=Juice, meanwhile, has seen a surge in media exposure in recent years, and the new fans who’ve joined through that exposure are being dubbed “Mōre-mi newcomers.” The thread split over a single question: is there an obligation to respect a different group within the same agency? Those who say no emphasized each group’s independence — “they’re a separate group, so it’s none of their business” — while those who say yes took issue with what they saw as a dismissal of 29 years of history and achievement. Citing comments from Yuko Nakazawa, some pointed out that the current generation’s popularity is what sustains the OG generation’s activities, hinting at the complicated feelings surrounding this generational handover. That said, no concrete incident backing up the premise that these newcomers actually “lack respect” was offered within the thread itself — much of this appears to rest on individual impressions and gut feelings, which is worth keeping in mind.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“DayDay.” is Nippon TV’s weekday morning info show, which has long been hosted by a three-person team: Ryota Yamasato, announcer Miyu Kuroda, and announcer Shinichi Takeda. The only reason given for this absence was “poor health,” with no details released about the circumstances or expected length of his time off. On the thread, several posters noted the industry custom of agencies sending a higher-ranked replacement when their talent is absent, framing Koji Higashino’s appearance in that light. Plenty of speculation also circulated about the reason behind the absence, but none of it is based on any official statement from the show or from Yamasato himself, and none of it should be treated as confirmed fact.

*This article is compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Ryota Yamasato Misses ‘DayDay.’ Live Broadcast Due to Illness, Koji Higashino Fills In, Announcer Takeda Sends Yamasato a Message.”

  • MAGES.: “We’re Incredibly Grateful We Could Release on Switch” — No Packaged PS Version Comes Down to Profitability

Hidekazu Shibata of game developer MAGES. told gamer.ne.jp in an interview that “we’re incredibly grateful we were able to release on Nintendo Switch,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. The company, known for adventure games like the Steins;Gate series, explained that it prioritizes Switch and PC because they let its older fanbase keep playing without having to upgrade to the latest hardware. At the same time, MAGES. doesn’t release packaged (physical) versions for PlayStation, prompting comments on the thread like “PS can’t even hit the minimum production run” and “profitability is an even harsher word than ‘barrier,’” which spiraled into a broader debate tied to the recent wave of third parties pulling back from PS5.

    — With the Historia rollout, you’ve now built an environment where the whole series

can be played on current hardware. What kind of response have you seen from new players, and how does that feel so far?

Shibata: We’re incredibly grateful that we were able to release on Nintendo Switch.

In another year, they won't be able to release packaged copies even if they wanted to.
    3AnonymousOct 1, 2026 09:22
PS probably can't even sell the minimum production run.
Pawapuro (Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball) didn't get a PS packaged version either — this trend's going to keep spreading well before 2028.

    Pulling out the key part:

"Of course we have older users, but at that age they tend to stop buying the latest consoles, which risks them retiring from gaming altogether. It's hard to ask them to buy the newest hardware, so as long as they have a Switch and a reasonably recent PC, we want to keep an environment where they can still play MAGES.'s adventure games."

Sounds like they want to plant roots on Switch (or really, Nintendo hardware) and PC, since those can pull in young new players. In other words, the implication is that they've judged PS can't bring in young new players.

    I think that's slightly off

Given the part about not being able to ask people to buy the newest hardware, this reads more like a declaration that they'll make a console roughly one generation behind the cutting edge their main platform. Switch game cards being compatible with Switch 2 also works in their favor there.
Either way, the fact that they have zero expectations for PS doesn't change.

    39AnonymousOct 1, 2026 09:57

    41AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:03
This is probably also why PS is the only platform skipped for that magical-girl witch-trial game that's selling like crazy…
If they keep calling these kinds of games "lame" and chasing them off, PS is going to miss the trend even in otaku-appeal content — the one area where it could actually beat Nintendo.
    46AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:09
    Re: #41
Indies have a somewhat different situation too…
They simply don't have the resources to go multiplatform from the start.
So they have no choice but to narrow down which hardware to target, or prioritize and release in order — and that order ends up being PC > Switch >>> PS >>> Xbox.
Well, in the end, if you say that's just the difference in expected sales, that's that.
    47AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:09
    Re: #41
That one's a bit of a special case, though
There was demand for a Switch version back at the crowdfunding stage, and they hit the stretch goal they set for it, so that's why it came out.
    53AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:43
So if they just don't make a packaged version, everything works out — I guess software development comes out of an overall budget, while outsourced packaged-version manufacturing is budgeted per-platform?

That's exactly the number-one example of something that isn't profitable.
It was convenient for SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) to pad their numbers with,
but from the publishers' side, those were hollow, papier-mâché figures with no substance behind them — so they turned their backs on it.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Producing a packaged version only makes financial sense if a certain minimum production run can be guaranteed — without that volume, retailers are less likely to place orders in the first place. This point came up repeatedly in the thread: “profitability,” in this context, isn’t just about differences in sales figures, but reflects a manufacturing-side judgment about whether distribution costs can be justified. Another factor at play is that Switch game cards are compatible with Nintendo’s next-generation Switch 2, giving third parties a stable, long-term platform to build on. At the same time, some in the thread argued that the free-play program PlayStation’s camp used to run in the past obscured actual sales figures, ultimately lowering publishers’ assessment of the platform — a reminder that this isn’t simply a case of companies “abandoning PS,” but a tangle of compounding factors worth keeping in mind.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “[Gratitude] MAGES.: “We’re incredibly grateful we could release on Switch. There’s a profitability reason we don’t release packaged versions on PS”.”

Meanwhile, unverified speculation flew around about everything from the performance fee to how far onto campus attendees would actually be allowed to go.

Pretty impressive that a university has its own 2,000-capacity venue

    Background and Key Points

Showa Women’s University’s Hitomi Memorial Hall serves both as the venue for the Cosmos Festival and, separately from the festival itself, as a multi-purpose hall rented out to outside artists. In the thread, the past acts mentioned weren’t clearly distinguished as having performed as part of the Cosmos Festival itself versus simply renting the hall for a standalone show — and some pointed out that even at the same venue, how far onto campus you’re allowed and how tight security is can differ between an actual “festival day” show and a “rented hall” booking. One post claimed the performance fee was “3 to 4 million yen,” but this is purely anonymous-board speculation, not a figure released by the organizers. Since this is a school festival, students and staff may get priority with limited general-admission slots, but the announcement doesn’t spell out detailed attendance conditions, so an official update will need to be awaited.

  • Grandpa’s Leftover Model Kits Find No Takers — 5ch: ‘Once You’ve Built It, It’s Worthless’

Over on 5ch’s “Live: Anything Goes” board, a thread blew up over a granddaughter’s dilemma: she’s been left with her late grandfather’s plastic model kit collection and can’t find anyone willing to take it off her hands. Some suggested listing them on Yahoo! When you factor in the effort, most of it ends up not being worth the work
this whole "otaku decluttering" thing has become a topic you hear about a lot lately
they really need to handle it themselves while they're still around
    36AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:24
How are you even supposed to pack this stuff?
    41AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:27
    Re: #36
Ah yeah, that's exactly the hassle part
    47AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:29

Since it's already assembled, packing it must be absolutely brutal
lots of tiny parts and it's fragile

In the end it comes down to how the family feels about it
personally I don't think they need to stress over it that much

    Re: #49
Well even if you sell it, the question is how much you'd actually get
if it's only a few thousand yen, I wouldn't want to bother dealing with some collector type
the stuff I'll probably end up handling is my dad's ancient lamps and fishing gear
he seemed like the type who'd never throw anything out until he died
    76AnonymousOct 1, 2026 11:42
What if this had been Gunpla (Gundam model kits) instead?
I get the same impression — once a Gunpla's built, it's worthless too

    Re: #76
That's basically true of model kits in general

We're also just dumping stuff we don't want on them, so it's fine

If I can get rid of it for free, that's exactly what I'd hope for

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

As a general rule, plastic model kits only command a premium among collectors while still “unopened and unassembled” — once a kit has been built, it holds almost no resale value in practice. A few vintage kits that meticulously reproduce real-world hardware, like the Zero fighter plane or the battleship Yamato, came up in the thread as exceptions, but those are isolated cases. Some posters suggested listing items on flea-market apps or auction sites, but since finished models are fragile and a hassle to pack and ship, the dominant opinion was that it’s not worth the effort for just a few thousand yen. The discussion split between those who felt disposal should come down to “the family’s feelings” and those who argued it should be decided on “economic rationality” — highlighting a gap, common in sorting out a deceased relative’s belongings, between sentimental value and market value.

  • Juice=Juice’s Risa Irie Unseals Her 5-Year-Sealed ‘Soran Bushi’ Dance — 5ch: ‘Our Youngest Member Is Terrifying’

In a blog post dated September 30, 2026, Juice=Juice’s Risa Irie reported that she performed her “Soran Bushi” dance — a routine she had kept sealed away for over five years since first showing it off in her audition video — in a new TikTok video, after being egged on by her junior members (Ichika, Eba, Ringo, and Niina). The topic was reposted to 5ch’s Hello! Project board, where comments praised the group’s close bond. At the same time, it was compared to a Soran Bushi video from the popular TikTok-born group MeI, drawing sharp criticism that “MeI’s version is more serious and is actually going viral,” countered by claims that “in a direct collab, Juice=Juice’s account got more traction” — leaving commenters split on which approach to the dance was the right one.

That joke TikTok I mentioned on my blog the other day is up now 😂😂
    So get this 😂
Since I'm totally out of the loop on trends,
I had no idea this was even a thing,
and I happened to walk in on Ichika, Eba, Ringo, and Niina
saying "this TikTok trend is so good!"
and it turned into "oh, here comes the original!!" 😂
So I ended up dancing the Soran Bushi I'd kept sealed away for over five years since my audition video came out,
pushed into it by the youngest duo plus our fellow members 😂😂
    Niina told me,
"We'll just dance what we picked up, so Irie-san, please just do your fully trained Soran Bushi as-is!!"
and honestly, our youngest member is scary
And on top of that, Eba and Ichika were cracking up off-camera
    Hey!!! lol

    Nice vibe
    5AnonymousOct 1, 2026 07:42
I love how Niina always talks like she's half-mocking everyone lol

These days Juice=Juice all chat together and eat meals gathered around a table, but the original members used to just sit backstage with earphones in, only ever looking in the mirror.

I've never forgotten the fun times and the frustrating times from those 7 years.
I often find myself thinking I don't want the younger members to go through that kind of experience.
I just want them to have only happy experiences and keep smiling forever!!

Watching Ninnin (a member's nickname), I've realized she's a really, really sensitive girl who pays close attention to people's expressions and behavior.
The "innocent and does whatever she wants!!!" side of her stands out easily,
but she also gets anxious about all sorts of things and cries when she's hurt, only to be totally back to normal ten minutes later, laughing like usual.
Watching her, I never get tired of it, and I think she's really cut out for show business!
It's fine! Just stay exactly as you are!
I think more than anything, what matters most is creating an environment where the younger members can feel comfortable.
Because it's all of you, the younger members, who will carry this group forward.
    8AnonymousOct 1, 2026 08:37
It's a turn-off that everyone's just laughing their way through it.
MeI is going viral because they do it with a serious face like the real deal.

When MeI and Juice=Juice filmed a collab TikTok together, it was actually Juice=Juice's account that got more traction.

A lot of Juice members tend to not commit fully and just laugh it off instead, huh

MeI's got a lot of that too

Niina's sense of humor is on another level —
it wouldn't work if Risa-chi (Risa's nickname) tried it alone.

Ever since Niina joined, like some big friendly dog,
I feel like there are more moments of Risa-chi smiling.
    In a way it's like big-dog therapy.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Soran Bushi” dance Risa Irie performed isn’t a Hello! Project audition set piece — it’s known as the signature bit she showed off in her own audition video. This time, she happened to walk in on her junior members getting excited about a trending TikTok trend, and ended up suddenly stepping in to perform the “original” version herself. Thread commenters found it funny that the group’s internal pecking order was flipped, with the younger members demanding the fully polished version from their senior. The group brought up for comparison, MeI, is a TikTok-born idol group produced by Rino Sashihara, known for performing the same kind of bit with a consistently serious expression throughout. On the thread, harsh opinions along the lines of “doing it as a joke kills the vibe” sat alongside counterarguments like “in a direct collab video, it was actually Juice=Juice’s account that gained more traction,” with the discussion centering on which approach — joking around versus playing it straight — resonates more on TikTok.
