Voice actors pop up in these shows all the time now.

Re: #1
Does her arm stretch out, or does she start glowing like the sun? (a nod to Luffy's Gear 5 transformation)
8AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:51
You guys actually caught it?
I had absolutely no idea.
9AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:52
First VIVANT, now even the Taiga drama is pandering to otaku?
45AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:15
Re: #9
Taiga dramas have been packed with voice actors for years now.
49AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:18
Re: #9
Nah, they've been doing this for ages lol
11AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:53
Get Mitsuishi-san in there too.
26AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:59
Re: #11
Mitsuishi-san was already in "Hikaru Kimi e" (the 2024 Taiga drama), wasn't she?
14AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:54
If Tanaka-san were taller, she probably could've made it as a big on-screen actress too… same goes for Tsuda Ken.
15AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:54
Must feel good for a voice actress who never quite made it as an on-camera actress to succeed through voice work and land a role in a Taiga drama. Mayumi Tanaka's also kept up stage acting the whole time.
18AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:55
Using a voice actor again.
Seems like every drama lately does this.
21AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:56
Wonder what the connection behind this casting is.
What a surprise!
22AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:57
She was a background extra in a pretty visible spot — so that was her? Couldn't tell from the voice at all. I wonder if her name was even in the opening credits.
23AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:57
Thought she was just a regular old lady lol
Only got it after hearing it mentioned in the live-chat thread.
24AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:58
Back in the day she used to show up in the reenactment segments on "Dou Natteru no!?" (a TV variety show)
27AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:59
She was in "Dou Natteru no!?" pretty much every episode.
30AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:01
Apparently, among pure-blooded Earthlings, Krillin had the highest power level and was the strongest. (Tanaka voices Krillin in Dragon Ball)
33AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:05
Lately anime films have been losing roles to live actors, so maybe they're balancing it out by casting voice actors in live-action instead.
34AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:05
Mayumi Tanaka's been in morning dramas too, right.

Back in the "Oi! Hanimaru" days she also often appeared on-camera as a witch character.
36AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:06
Showa-era voice actors often did acting work on the side too, so it's not THAT surprising — but I guess Taiga dramas are a different league.

Re: #36
These days they announce it beforehand specifically so people go "ooh, that voice actor was in it!" and it goes viral. I think it kicked off around Akio Otsuka in "Kirin ga Kuru." His father was also in shows like "Taiheiki" and "Tobu ga Gotoku," but nobody made a fuss about it back then.
37AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:06
Isn't this the same director or writer as VIVANT?
38AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:08
This person also voiced young Char Aznable, you know. (Gundam)
54AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:22
Re: #38
She's one of Yasuhiko-san's favorites (character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko), but I don't think she's the one who played Char.
41AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:11
Quite a difference from that towering Kirishima Kanna, huh.
42AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:13
Come to think of it, that "Dandadan" they were pushing hard with the theme song all over the media vanished in a flash.
43AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:13
Wasn't it a thing back in the day that struggling actors who couldn't make it became voice actors?
48AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:18
Hidetsugu's giving off a pretty unpleasant vibe.
Also, was there a "Genta of Nakamura"? I thought Nakamura village got wiped out by a rival faction, and Hidenaga left the village to serve Oda Nobunaga alongside Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
51AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:19
"It's Hata-bou, da jo~" was in this?! (catchphrase of a character from "Oi! Hanimaru")
52AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:20
Re: #47
Ah, so it's the advance announcement after all, makes sense. Way back when, voice actors weren't just doing side roles or guest spots in dramas — some even had regular cast roles, and it felt like only hardcore anime fans would notice.
55AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:22
So the only legends who haven't shown up yet are Tomokazu Sugita and Yuuichi Nakamura?
57AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:23
I guess the younger brother dies in about 7 more episodes?
59AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:24
Re: #57
Yeah, there was definitely an ominous vibe building at the end there.
66AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:28
Re: #57
Apparently he dies the episode before the finale. The final episode is said to cover the Toyotomi clan afterward. At Hideyoshi's deathbed, Hidenaga, their mother, the three sisters, Hideyori, and Chacha all come from the afterlife to welcome Hideyoshi, and that's how it ends.
61AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:25
Tanaka-san was a quasi-regular on "Tora ni Tsubasa" (Tiger and Her Wings), you know.
62AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:25
Nobody's going to recognize Mayumi Tanaka even if they cast her.
65AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:28
Last week she was playing a monkey in "Ranma 1/2."
67AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:30
Tsuda Kenjirou and Tomokazu Seki were in last year's Taiga drama "Berabou" too, right.
68AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:32
Personally, I thought "Berabou" was more interesting.
69AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:37
Re: #1
Are they that desperate for ratings?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Voice actors turning up in NHK Taiga dramas has become fairly common in recent years, and the thread itself points to this trend going back to “around Akio Otsuka in ‘Kirin ga Kuru.’” Mayumi Tanaka herself is also an actress who has kept up on-camera appearances, including in the morning drama “Tora ni Tsubasa” and reenactment segments for the variety show “Dou Natteru no!?,” so this isn’t a totally unprecedented casting choice. The debate boiled down to a mismatch between “recent Taiga dramas use way too many voice actors” and “it’s always been like this” — but neither side is really arguing against casting voice actors in Taiga dramas at all. What’s easy to miss is that the “surprise” here was specifically about the appearance being uncredited beforehand — the casting of a voice actor itself wasn’t the unusual part. Worth noting too is that some commenters were sympathetic toward voice actors who, for reasons like height, never quite broke through as on-camera actors, finally getting this kind of recognition — a backdrop that goes beyond simple buzz.
