Mii-yama Anime Adaptation ‘Still Under Discussion,’ Publisher Says — 5ch Asks ‘Wait, Is It Cancelled or Not?’

From our other sites

The story

Regarding the anime adaptation of the manga Mii-yama, the publisher released a statement saying it is “continuing discussions on whether to proceed as planned.” The series, which centers on a disabled protagonist, has long been a flashpoint over whether it should be adapted at all, partly due to unconfirmed allegations that the author made discriminatory remarks. On 5ch, opinions split between users who read the announcement as a de facto cancellation and those urging caution, arguing “nothing has actually been decided yet.” The thread also broadened into a debate over standards for depicting disability in fiction, with comparisons drawn to past acclaimed works.

Another “win” for us, I guess.

Honestly, this is the type of series where interest drains out the second you know the ending — nobody cares anymore.
5AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:37
It doesn't even say 'cancelled' anywhere.

Re: #5
I think "suspended" is basically what they mean by "cancelled" here, no?
64AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:59
Re: #46
It hasn't stopped though. They're just saying they're "considering it" — on the ground, production's still moving lol
7AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:37
> We are continuing discussions, including whether to proceed with the anime adaptation as planned.

Where does it say "cancelled"?
10AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:39
Come to think of it, wasn't Takopi kind of similar? (Takopi's Original Sin, a manga with a dark twist) That one got an anime adaptation out of nowhere and nobody even talks about it anymore.
11AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:39
Would a male version of Mii-yama even be popular if they made one?
12AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:40
If you're gonna pull stuff like this, pay up!
Though I guess ecchi content works too!!
13AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:40
No way it's cancelled —
sounds like it's already pretty far along.
My guess is it lands as a streaming-only release with no terrestrial broadcast.
14AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:40
Hadaka no Taishou and Forrest Gump are treated as classics, so
why is Mii-yama the only one getting slammed for being discriminatory toward disabled people? (Hadaka no Taishou: a classic Japanese drama about a real intellectually disabled painter)

Re: #14
Wait, the Hadaka no Taishou guy actually had an intellectual disability…?

Huh, that's genuinely shocking.

Re: #14
It's because the editorial team got way too carried away —
now there's no excuse left to fall back on.
15AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:41
The moment's already passed.
They needed to push this through at 100 Wani speed or it was never gonna work. (100 Wani: a manga whose hype imploded right after its heavily-hyped ending)
16AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:41
Meanwhile they instantly cancelled 'My Second Life in Another World' the second Chinese fans got mad about it.
18AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:42
Re: #10
That's nothing alike.
19AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:42
Re: #18
I said it's similar, didn't I —
like how they both boil down to gut-punch, infuriating plot twists.
22AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:43
Re: #19
It's fine because it's not about a disabled character.
48AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:51
Re: #19
That's not actually the reason the cancellation call was made.
21AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:43
Well, Azuki Nene's more entertaining than Mii-yama anyway lol (Azuki Nene: a VTuber)
26AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:44
Re: #21
Write it properly as Azuki Nene (Diana).
27AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:44
Aren't NanJ posters starting from a position of being losers anyway? (NanJ: 5ch's sports/variety discussion board)
You guys got baited and kept this thread running forever.

Re: #27
As the 100 Wani case proved, we're great at flip-flopping.
43AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:49
Re: #27
Are you new here or something?
31AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:45
Why though? Saying disabled people can't appear in anime is discrimination in itself, isn't it?
35AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:46
If they'd given it an anime-original true ending, it might've had a shot.
38AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:48
No matter how you read it, that statement doesn't sound like they're giving up.
Worst case, they just end up streaming it online.
59AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:57
The source is apparently Kenmo — what even is this? (Kenmo: nickname for a 5ch board known for its left-leaning, anti-Japan posting crowd)
61AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:58
Re: #59
If it's from a Kenmo guy, it's gotta be legit. (sarcastic)
63AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:59

Welp, thread's done here.
86AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:40
But you all wanna see this scene animated, right?

Re: #86
The middle-school arc was honestly so heartbreaking it made my chest tighten up while reading.
But I'd genuinely love to see the "Mii-chan's ears!!" scene animated.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The phrase the publisher actually used in its announcement was “continuing discussions” — the word “cancelled” is purely an interpretation by thread posters. There remains a strong view that production itself hasn’t actually stopped, and it’s easy to mistake the situation for a final decision when none has been made. The real divide wasn’t over whether a disabled character should be depicted at all, but over how to weigh the unconfirmed allegations directed at the author personally. While comparisons were drawn to existing acclaimed works dealing with disability, such as Hadaka no Taishou and Forrest Gump, many pointed out that the difference lies not in the content of the work itself but in the author’s conduct. It’s also worth noting that most of the allegations against the author remain unconfirmed and unacknowledged by the author, so the definitive-sounding claims in the thread shouldn’t be taken at face value as fact.
