The story
A thread titled “Any games where you’ve clocked over 1,000 hours?” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Replies rolled in for titles like Stellaris, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Dead by Daylight, Breath of the Wild, Warframe, and Dragon Quest X, with posters reporting anywhere from several hundred to several thousand hours sunk into them. Dragon Quest X stood out with a total of 7,200 hours (including a three-year hiatus), and Dead by Daylight came in at 4,500 hours. The thread split between posters who argued it’s better to play many games lightly than pour 1,000 hours into one, and others who shot back that such people simply don’t know the joy of mastering a single game.
What people said
This one's genuinely fun — makes me nostalgic for how hyped the early 'Nettai' (tropics) craze was
Same here, Stellaris is my longest too, but only 800 hours
Just checked — it's actually 1,350 hours
Though I can't rule out that around 100 of those hours were me passed out asleep with it running
Dragon Quest Builders 2
'Kaze Baza' (an abbreviated game title)
Probably 'Poko-a' and 'Hono Gurashi' will hit 1,000 hours too
The Division
Assetto Corsa Competizione
2,000 hours on PS4
Another 2,500 hours since moving to PC — about 4,500 total
Just over 100 hours for a normal clear
Just over 500 hours after 100%-ing the map and clearing every quest in Master Mode
Then I learned about tricks like IST and stasis launches, started a Master Mode New Game+, and before I knew it I'd blown past 1,000 hours
Can't believe you put 1,000 hours into that game
The character art and voices were way too otaku-pandering for me — I dropped it after 4 hours lol
You can only say that because you've never played anything deeper than the shallow stuff that gets boring fast
Haven't launched it in about 5 years, but I'm over 8,000 hours
Though three-quarters of that was probably just idling
The most I've ever played a game in my life
Before the PS3 online service shut down, I told all my online buddies (about 20 of them) 'see you in GTA6' — but when I checked my PS5 Pro, which I bought after the PS3, only one of those friends had a PS5 active
That was the story as of last week
Checked again yesterday and now 7 of them are active lol
Guess people are starting to pick up PS5s now that GTA6 is getting close
You didn't need to pad that out with a boring made-up story
Probably my most-played is [Monster Hunter] World at 600 hours
Right now Diablo 4 is at 540 hours and Borderlands at 480 — not sure either will catch up to World
Even my longest ones, like Nioh 2, Diablo, or Monster Hunter, probably top out at a few hundred hours
And those all have multiplayer anyway — for something truly solo-only, I've genuinely got nothing
7,200 hours
And that's even with a 3-year hiatus in there
Made multiple accounts just so I could build a party entirely out of my own ideal custom Pawns — currently sitting at close to 2,500 hours and still going
I burn out after about 80 hours, tops
I can't believe people can keep playing the same game for 1,000 hours
A clear only takes 30-40 hours, and maxing your stats only takes around 60
Just recruiting a Liquid Metal Slime alone took me 50 hours
Maxing out every single monster in 60 hours sounds rough, don't you think?
You're a relative latecomer
Did you get into it through the anime?
Come back home — to Titanfall
Heard the next season's adding an Emerald rank tier
Still feels like you could max everything out in around 200 hours, though
Doesn't just recruiting every single monster take that long on its own?
Don't think it takes that long
Only a handful of them are actually a pain to recruit
Really? Hell Battler and Killer Machine were pretty brutal too, though
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
The ‘1,000+ hours’ benchmark tends to generate buzz because platforms like Steam and PS5 now automatically track and display playtime, making it an easy number to point to. That said, every figure cited in the thread was self-reported, and some included idle time or stretches when the player had stopped playing, so there’s a gap between these numbers and actual active playtime worth keeping in mind. The debate centered on a difference in values — whether it’s better to pour hours into a single game or sample many titles briefly — and no consensus was reached either way. The thread also left unaddressed, mixing it in without sorting it out, the fact that MMOs and online multiplayer games are designed around long play sessions from the start, which is a different situation from racking up the same hours in an offline, single-player console game.
