The story

It has emerged that a staff member on night duty at Saiseikai Yahata General Hospital in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, filmed an inpatient and posted the footage on social media. The video showed the patient crawling on the floor, and the hospital has acknowledged the incident and apologized. The Asahi Shimbun reported the story on October 21. On 5ch, many replies expressed strong disgust toward the staff member who filmed it, while others pointed out that crawling on the floor can actually happen as a result of conditions like stroke aftereffects, sparking a debate over the patient’s condition. Posters also brought up a similar case involving a nurse at a hospital in Sapporo, turning social-media ethics in medical settings into a talking point.

So creepy… dozing off in the dead of night (丑三つ時, 'ushi mitsu doki' — the witching hour, roughly 2-2:30am)

Re: #3
Mind if I claim I said that?
137AnonymousOct 22, 2026 15:37
Re: #3
Wouldn't 'stinky and creepy' work just as well? (wordplay swapping くそ/'damn' for くさい/'stinky')
167AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:39
Re: #3
At this point it can only have happened during the witching hour, lol
8AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:36
I sense something deeply insulting toward life itself in this
157AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:25
Re: #8
Re: #11
Exactly this.
The disgust toward the person who filmed it is intense
11AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:36
Filming absolutely everything, no matter what — that's genuinely creepy
13AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:37
Social media really does suit Japanese people
65AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:14
Re: #13
Seriously.
Nobody does petty, underhanded uses of it better than we do
24AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:42
I could sort of understand it if they'd hidden the hospital's name and just written 'working the night shift at a hospital and it was disgusting,' but how do you even get to the point of posting photos and videos? That mindset is way more disgusting than anything else

Re: #24
Sharing images with a bunch of people and racking up likes probably gives them some kind of self-satisfaction
Their self-importance has inflated to the absolute extreme
32AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:44
Stuff like this is probably an everyday occurrence — it just never comes to light
57AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:08
Re: #32
Even granting that's true,
the moment you make it public, something's seriously wrong with you
36AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:47
Recently at JR Sapporo Hospital too, two nurses in their 20s posted a video and the hospital had to apologize
Is this some kind of trend lately?
Or is it just normal in the nursing world and it's only now coming to light?

Re: #36
Apparently that one was set to followers-only, but someone betrayed them and reposted it on X
So there's probably a fair number of people doing this kind of thing
Venting about it within a small circle like that should be fine, I'd think
83AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:32
Re: #36
It's completely normal
When my work takes me into the back areas of a hospital (not the nurses' station), the verbal abuse just pours out nonstop
They'll casually say stuff like 'that patient's such a pain, I wish they'd just hurry up and die' (タヒ is a deliberately garbled spelling of 死ぬ, 'die,' used to dodge filters)

Honestly, it's made me scared of nurses and reluctant to go to the hospital

Re: #36
Apparently both of those two had been on the job less than a year
If they're licensed nurses straight out of vocational school or junior college, that'd put them around 21-22
A workplace where new hires have time to kill after only six months or so on the job…
that's an incredibly cushy ('white,' i.e. non-exploitative) employer
48AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:52
What's with the '○○-kai' naming?
Sounds like a yakuza gang
50AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:54
Re: #48
Medical corporations are full of names ending in '-kai'
That's embarrassingly naive, honestly
51AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:03
Re: #48
The Imperial Gift Foundation Saiseikai was established by an imperial edict from Emperor Meiji
Members of the imperial family have since served as its president, so it's a medical organization with strong ties to the imperial family

It's a public institution with a sense of public duty ranking just behind national/public hospitals and the Japanese Red Cross
78AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:28
Was it a monster patient?
81AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:30
Re: #78
It was a monster nurse
87AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:35
Re: #78
It was a demon nurse
99AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:41
I'd probably film it too, honestly
But I'd only share it within my own circle
only with people I absolutely trust

The thought that people without a shred of morals are going to be the ones propping up Japan from here on… what kind of country is that going to turn into, lol. Though I'll probably be dead in about 15 years anyway, so it's not really my problem
102AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:42
Re: #99
Apparently they posted it to a locked (private) account and it still got reposted elsewhere
113AnonymousOct 22, 2026 14:53
Re: #99
What's your standard for 'absolutely trustworthy'?
Just a gut feeling?
150AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:00
You'd think you'd be told point-blank, when signing your employment contract, not to post work-related information on social media — let alone photos or videos
Hospitals are way behind on that kind of compliance
152AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:08
Re: #150
Hospitals are actually incredibly strict about this
Lose a single scrap of notepaper and you end up crawling around the whole ward searching for it
156AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:23
Re: #150
At a proper hospital, personal smartphones aren't even allowed on the premises

Though this place probably has the same rule — there are just people everywhere who ignore the rules, lol
183AnonymousOct 22, 2026 17:27
There was a nurse who looked at a patient (me) restrained hand and foot in the ICU after surgery and just cracked up laughing
This was at a certain Japanese Red Cross hospital, by the way
184AnonymousOct 22, 2026 17:32
Re: #183
Calling it 'a certain' hospital isn't exactly hiding anything, lol
Since I don't know the full situation, it's possible she wasn't laughing at you specifically, but still, that's rude

Patient treatment was better in the Heisei era than in Showa, and now it's degraded again in Reiwa, lol
185AnonymousOct 22, 2026 17:33
Re: #183
That's seriously awful. Isn't there a patient satisfaction survey or something?
187AnonymousOct 22, 2026 17:40
Re: #183
Being restrained hand and foot suggests you were probably thrashing around, even if it was just from the medication

Then again, the bit about being laughed at could also have been delirium talking

Background and talking points on this story

Saiseikai is a public medical corporation established following an imperial edict from Emperor Meiji, and as the thread noted, it has deep ties to the imperial family. Medical staff posting patient information on social media is an act that can run afoul of Japan’s Personal Information Protection Act and the confidentiality obligations under the Medical Care Act, and similar cases — such as the one involving a nurse at a hospital in Sapporo — have been reported repeatedly in recent years. In many cases the pattern is the same: content shared under a followers-only setting gets reposted by a third party and that’s how it comes to light, and it’s easy to overlook that once something spreads, it gets treated the same as a public post regardless of whether the original poster meant for it to go public. The thread’s criticism centered mainly on the act of filming itself, but neither the article nor the thread’s replies make clear how well the hospital’s device-management rules and social-media training actually functioned.
