The story

A female reporter for Ryukyu Asahi Broadcasting (QAB) drank 4 cans of beer and 4 glasses of wine in about an hour as part of a report on the dangers of drunk driving. After confidently stating she was “fine to drive,” she got behind the wheel on a driving school course — and ended up hitting a crash-test mannequin. Footage of the segment went viral on social media and became a hot topic on 5ch. Thread reactions were split between shock at how much she drank and suspicion that the whole stunt was staged for dramatic effect, with many posters also noting that she didn’t look very drunk at all.

Drink 4 cans of beer and 4 glasses of wine in about an hour, then grab the wheel of a car. A test segment by a female reporter at Ryukyu Asahi Broadcasting (QAB), meant to illustrate the dangers of drunk driving, has drawn huge attention on social media. While many were stunned by the sheer amount of alcohol involved, what happened once she started driving drove home just how dangerous drunk driving really is.

“I’m a little tipsy, but I’m confident I can drive.”

The October 15 QAB news segment titled “How Does Drinking Affect Driving? Our Reporter Tries Drunk Driving” has become a talking point.

She wasn't drunk at all — she hit it on purpose to match what the show wanted.
5AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:06
Being confident about your driving has nothing to do with drunk driving.
6AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:06
Aren't there way too many threads being started that have nothing to do with sports/entertainment news? Is whoever's starting them drunk too?
105AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:55
Re: #6 They're clearly confident in their thread-starting skills.
7AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:06
Well yeah, if she drove safely afterward it wouldn't make for much of a TV segment.
21AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:12
Re: #7 So you're saying it was staged.
8AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:06
If you're in Okinawa, you gotta go with awamori (local Okinawan liquor)!
9AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:07
Nice drinking form! And that satisfied face after drinking — makes me want a drink too.
10AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:07
I can hold my liquor pretty well too, but once I was just re-parking a mini-truck on my grandparents' big farm and ended up scraping it. Your eyes seem to be seeing everything fine, but your focus keeps cutting out here and there — it's genuinely dangerous.

Director: "Okay, now hit it!"
14AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:09
Nobody drinks that much in an hour even at a drinking party.
42AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:24
Re: #14 But people who actually cause accidents often drink even more than that.
85AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:45
Re: #14 The whole point of the setup was to get her properly plastered before driving — it's just that this woman can hold her liquor so well she doesn't look drunk at all.
15AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:09
I can't really drink, but do women who love alcohol only date guys who can also drink a lot?
16AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:10
Beer hits differently depending on whether it's a 500ml or 350ml can. And wine will really get you drunk — never drive after that.
18AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:10
That's extreme lol. 4 beers and 4 glasses of wine? Of course you'd get drunk from that.
22AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:12
Orion Beer, 500ml x4 cans 🍺
Ryukyu awamori, 4 glasses 🍶

Reporter: "I'm totally confident I can drive 🤗 o゚。(´Д`//)*hiccup*"

Re: #1 That pace is way too fast lol. Drink at that speed and you won't even be able to walk straight, let alone drive.
25AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:13
0.5mg of alcohol per liter of breath — for a normal person that's full-on falling-down drunk. Can't walk straight, can't speak clearly, can barely hold a conversation, and honestly could pass out on the spot.
33AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:19
It's interesting that the reporter herself goes through the experience for the segment.

Re: #25 Watching the video, she only looks slightly more cheerful than usual, so maybe she really can hold her liquor.
27AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:14
Drinking that volume of alcohol in one hour — isn't acute alcohol poisoning actually the scarier risk here, more than the driving itself?
28AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:15
Calling that just "a little tipsy"… Okinawans, man.
29AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:15
Even knowing it's just a mannequin, watching the hit-and-run footage is unpleasant.
38AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:21
This is basically the classic "I'm not even drunk lol, I'm TOTALLY confident I can drive" scenario — so is this really a valid test? Well, but I guess this is probably exactly how real repeat drunk drivers think… their brains have already shrunk from it. Cars should really just shift toward alcohol-detection systems that won't let the engine start if you're over the limit. Seems doable.
52AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:27
Re: #1 Even so, the reporter commented, "I'm a little tipsy, but I'm confident I can drive," and started driving the course at the driving school with an instructor riding along.

Instructor: ("…wait, I have to ride in THIS?!")
57AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:29
Re: #52 Should be fine if it's a car meant for driving-school training.
58AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:30
If a Tokyo TV station tried this, they'd get flooded with complaints. Okinawa's a lot more easygoing.
61AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:31
Re: #58 Even though the police were running it.
72AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:37
They should make this mandatory for driving school and license renewals lol.
103AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:53
Re: #72 A lot of rural testing centers are in out-of-the-way places, and people drive there for renewals, so that wouldn't really work.
74AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:40
Actual habitual drunk drivers tend to drive super safely, since getting caught would end everything for them.
77AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:42
Re: #74 They'd get caught at a checkpoint though.
93AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:47
Is this not an issue since it happened at a driving school?
98AnonymousOct 21, 2026 19:48
Re: #93 Because it was organized by the police department.

Background and Key Points of Debate

“Reporter tries drunk driving” segments like this one are a recurring format, regularly produced in cooperation with police and driving schools to raise awareness of the dangers of drunk driving — this isn’t unique to Okinawa; local stations across Japan have run similar features. As pointed out in the thread, this particular segment was also organized by a police department using a driving school course. The debate split along two lines: whether having her drink heavily in a short time was simply “dramatization to highlight the danger” or just “an excessive stunt,” and surprise that the reporter herself didn’t appear very drunk. It’s also worth noting that most readers aren’t familiar with exactly what breath-alcohol levels trigger license revocation or criminal penalties in Japan, making it hard to judge how the amount she drank compares to the alcohol levels typically involved in real drunk-driving accidents.
