The story

Sony’s newly unveiled Walkman, the “NW-WM1ZM3,” is reportedly priced at ¥679,800 for the 256GB model and set to launch in November, sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. At 670g — heavier than a bottle of water — it drew repeated questions about who would actually buy such a thing in an era when listening to music on a smartphone is the norm, while others guessed it’s aimed squarely at audiophiles and car-audio enthusiasts. Some pointed out that the Android-equipped models have notoriously poor battery life, with the older non-Android series lasting far longer, and the thread split over exactly who this device is for.

Even the "budget" version is around ¥350,000…
3AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:35
This actually makes me hopeful for the PS6 too 🤗
4AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:35
Which one's better, this or the SP4000?
5AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:36
Yeah, ¥400,000-ish is pretty normal for these things…
so I guess it'll sell just fine
6AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:36
What kind of jaw-dropping, high-res games can you even play on this thing
8AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:37
I think regular folks would be plenty happy with FiiO's M21 — you can grab that for around ¥50,000
13AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:38
Who even uses a Walkman these days
Smartphones are more capable anyway
And honestly you could just use AI to build your own music player at this point
Who exactly is this even aimed at
78AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:15
Re: #13
That's exactly why they're going the premium-price route
83AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:18
Re: #13
Probably the hardcore car-audio crowd
14AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:39
I mean, with wages going up all over the place, if you can't even cough up ¥300,000 for the cheap version, that's honestly just poverty
19AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:41
Re: #14
Most people on Earth would pay ¥300,000 for a TV, but not for this…
15AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:39
670g, lol, that's like 3x a smartphone lol
17AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:39
Is this thing even meant to be listened to outside…?
18AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:40
Re: #15
Excuse you, it's got a whopping 256GB of storage 😡

Re: #18
Uh… yeah…
20AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:41
The least they could do is put in the effort to run their own proprietary OS
21AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:41
If you left this on the train you'd absolutely lose your mind
22AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:41
Is cult-level price-gouging all they've got left in them?
23AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:42
Please tell me the battery's at least replaceable…?
26AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:43
At that price, the real question is what this thing CAN'T do
27AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:43
Guess this is what having a "developing-country" sense of money looks like (i.e., numbers totally divorced from reality)
28AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:44
¥600,000 for just 256GB of storage is downright insulting to customers
Seriously, who is buying this
31AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:46
Forget this, just bring back the W series already (Walkman's old sport/waterproof earphone-style line)
32AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:47
The only use case I can picture is Hikakin buying one and chucking it into the bath (a famous YouTuber known for over-the-top unboxing stunts)
33AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:48
Can people even actually tell the difference with Hi-Res audio?
35AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:49
Re: #33
I remember when it first came out, people were saying 'that's Sony for you, world-class'
34AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:48
The reason it's a WALKMAN and not an XPERIA
37AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:50
What's this thing even for
42AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:55
Re: #37
It's for rich audiophiles
40AnonymousOct 20, 2026 18:53
What can this do that a smartphone can't

Re: #40
Make your pants sag
60AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:05
670g — that's heavier than a bottle of water
62AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:07
Re: #60
Apparently it's basically a lump of copper inside
82AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:18
That said, being this heavy and dense
probably makes it totally unsuited for
something like running while listening to music
88AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:21
Re: #82
Don't talk trash about the iPhone!
95AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:24
Trading cards are a hobby you guys are all obsessed with too
Apparently there are people who drop hundreds of thousands, even millions of yen on those
To anyone not into it, that looks just as insane
That's just how hobbies are
100AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:28
Re: #95
Trading cards at least hold resale value
Does this have any resale value? Even a used one going for ¥200,000, who'd want it
102AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:29
The Android-equipped Walkman models are seriously trash
The battery drains like crazy even when you're doing nothing, doesn't even last a day

Meanwhile the non-Android A40 or A50 last 2 days,
and the S series can easily go about 4 days

Re: #102
That battery life is seriously way too weak

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “NW-WM1ZM3” at the center of this discussion is the successor to Sony’s top-tier Walkman “Signature Series,” and the previous model also cost around ¥400,000 — these have always been known as premium gear aimed at audiophiles, not mass-market devices for the general public. The design prioritizes sound quality, right down to using oxygen-free copper in the chassis, and the 670g weight is said to be a byproduct of that. Now that listening to music on a smartphone is the norm, it’s natural that people would question the point of a standalone player, but as the thread itself pointed out, the target audience isn’t people looking for a “smartphone replacement” — it’s listeners seeking high-quality playback through car audio systems or home setups. Meanwhile, the point that Android-equipped models burn through battery fast, while the non-Android S series and A series last much longer, is a nuance that’s easy to miss for readers unfamiliar with the Walkman lineup — and the thread split in tone between those who saw the price alone as a “rip-off” and those who viewed it as simply “the going rate in that hobby’s world.”
