The story
A survey by dining site jprime.jp of 500 men and women in their 20s to 60s on “restaurant chains they don’t want to go to / dislike” found Kura Sushi in first place (44 votes) and Kappa Sushi in second (43 votes). On 5ch, many commenters said the Kura Sushi result made sense given its past controversies and the reselling scandals tied to both McDonald’s and Kura Sushi, while complaints about Kappa Sushi centered on a much simpler gripe: “it just doesn’t taste good.” The discussion soon drifted away from the ranking itself into a free-for-all of chain-specific complaints — how hard Matsuya’s touchscreen ordering is to use, confusion over the ordering systems at Marugame Seimen and Subway, and a Kyushu-vs-Kanto debate over how heavily seasoned Joyfull’s food is.

What people said
Maybe that's just normal for people in Kyushu?
I'd say the same thing about Kanto-style soy sauce.
Yeah, the hamburger-steak dishes definitely have a strong flavor.
Compared to Denny's or Jonathan's, the seasoning is a lot heavier.
a survey of just 500 people isn't nearly enough to be a reliable indicator.
At least 1,000, minimum.
I'm an idiot for still going there even after the rat incident.
It got a lot better after the rat thing, though.
The fruit flies have noticeably dropped off.
I'd rather not imagine what the hygiene situation was like before that…
the touchscreen ordering is way too complicated.
Matsuya's terminals are seriously trash.
I ordered a set meal, and a salad popped up as a recommended add-on, so I tapped it —
and two salads showed up. Like, who do they think I am, some salad freak?
And on top of that it freezes constantly.
I've never seen a terminal freeze that much.
I never know what I'm supposed to do there.
What do you mean "what to do"?
Compared to how Subway wrecks first-timers, there's barely anything to figure out.
Growing your own food is going to be the new normal going forward.
and then someone suggests "Royal Host is fine, right?" — that wave of despair. Like, "ah, I can't be part of this group anymore." That's rock bottom.
Nothing else interesting here, honestly.
Maybe eating out just isn't for you.
What's that supposed to mean?
Did the "is Royal Host expensive or cheap" debate ever actually get settled?
Kappa Sushi's food is hopelessly bad.
It's not tasty, but they have no choice but to sell it while claiming it is — so I guess this result was inevitable.
The Matsuya near my workplace is a last resort when I'm short on time. The attached Matsunoya leaves my stomach feeling heavy from the oil.
Same here.
Spending money at chain restaurants just makes me feel ripped off.
Just way too bad.
Komeda's no good either, huh.
Isn't that just because you don't have the money to go to a fancy family restaurant?
Maybe you're just the poor one.
Re: #82
If that's the case, I'd say skip the lunch with mom-friends and go get a job, lol
#7 (tie): Sukesan Udon — 23 votes
#7 (tie): Marugame Seimen — 23 votes
Did Hanamaru actually do something wrong?
I vaguely remember Sukesan and Marugame screwing up, but Hanamaru?
Hanamaru killed off their 100-yen udon, didn't they?
They don't deserve to exist.
Maybe it's just simply not very tasty.
Are they still doing that?
They are, but some locations don't offer it, so watch out.
They still do it. They jacked the price up a ton, though.
I think it used to be in the 700-yen range, but now it's about 1,200 yen tax included.
And what you actually get is super lame.
It's gotten pricier compared to the old days, and honestly Coco's breakfast isn't all that tasty anyway.
There's a good hotel near me with a morning buffet — 1,300 yen for 3 hours, with all-you-can-eat Häagen-Dazs ice cream and everything.
#1 Ramen Jiro
#2 Ikinari Steak
#3 McDonald's
#4 Sushiro
#5 Yakiniku Like
#6 CoCo Ichibanya
#7 Yoshinoya
That's about right.
I pretty much agree except for CoCo Ichi.
CoCo Ichi is top-tier.
I bet a lot of people have never even been to Ikinari Steak or Ramen Jiro once.
Though maybe that's just me.
Background and Key Points on This Topic
The “restaurant chains people dislike” survey polled 500 people, and it’s nothing new for Kura Sushi and Kappa Sushi to land at the top. Since 2023, Kura Sushi has repeatedly made headlines over viral customer prank videos and leaked inappropriate footage from employees, so it has stayed easy to dislike on “corporate image” grounds even before taste comes into it. Reactions in the thread like >>49’s “makes sense given the reselling and controversies” reflect this — the ranking arguably measures trust more than taste, something that’s easy to miss from the original article alone. Votes for Kappa Sushi, by contrast, centered mainly on complaints about the food itself, meaning the #1 and #2 spots are driven by different kinds of dissatisfaction — a distinction the source article doesn’t make clear on its own. The point raised by posts like >>3 and >>60, that “500 people is far too small a sample,” is also a statistical weakness common to this kind of ranking coverage in general, and worth keeping in mind before taking the results at face value. Complaints about Matsuya’s touchscreen ordering or Marugame Seimen’s ordering process are about “usability” rather than taste, showing that the ranking is really a mix of different complaint types depending on the chain.
