Buyer Fresh From Nintendo’s Trade Show: “We’re Stocking Up Hard on PS5 Units. I Mean, Obviously.”

From our other sites

The story

A buyer who attended Nintendo’s trade presentation tweeted, “We’re stocking up heavy on PS5 units. I mean, obviously,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The trade presentation is where publishers preview the next season’s software lineup to retailers, and the post was widely read as hinting that Nintendo’s own lineup looked thin. The thread split over the reasoning — some pointed to demand building ahead of GTA6’s release, others to unconfirmed rumors like a disc-less redesign, and some even floated rising purchases aimed at piracy as a factor.

(Because of piracy — "割れ" means pirated/cracked copies)

Re: #3
Because the pirate-playable version can't run GTA6
4AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:51
Has this guy's "hinting" ever actually panned out before?
Pretty sure it hasn't.
5AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:51
Gotta admit, he's fast at catching piracy intel.
7AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:52
We've already seen the Splatoon Raiders bundle flop hard, and now GTA6's about to trigger a massive hot streak ("確変" — pachinko slang for a jackpot run) lol, so other companies better not get left behind 🤣
10AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:53
If this call is based on piracy numbers, that's just insane.
11AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:55
What it means is Nintendo's trade show had zero announcements for software that'll actually sell in the Jan-Mar quarter.
45AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:31
Re: #11
This.
Seriously, looks like it's just going to get crushed by GTA and that's that, lol
48AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:34
Re: #11
Sadly the lineup must've been weak enough to deserve that "well, obviously" comment.
12AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:01
So in the end, what was this guy's "more bad news for PS" thing even about?
At that point it's questionable whether Kojima's still-undated title even counted as real info.

He still hasn't said anything concrete, right?
13AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:02
Re: #12
Over on Geha people were saying it's about ditching the disc drive.
60AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:43
Re: #12
There was also a rumor floating in from overseas posts that PS5 units shipped from January 2027 onward won't include a controller.
Might be that, but until it actually happens there's no way to confirm it either way.
14AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:05
Re: #13
The disc removal thing is also two years out, in January too.
And apparently related companies barely got proper advance notice on that either.

Makes you wonder if Sony would even bother announcing that one, doesn't it?
17AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:06
Re: #14
Honestly PS is just one piece of bad news after another at this point, impossible to predict.
15AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:05
Re: #13
He said something like "Sony's got more to announce after that one," right?
18AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:07
Re: #15
Wait, really? Was that it?
Then what else could it be?
16AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:06
I don't get the logic where Switch 2 selling worse somehow means PS5 sells better.
19AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:07
Just vague, baseless speculation lol
21AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:09
The piracy crowd's buying is gonna skyrocket, ahhhhhh
22AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:11
Consoles suddenly start selling and everyone's like "huh, that's weird"?
37AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:24
Is it because demand looks strong thanks to GTA6?
Or because the Japanese version's price hike is coming around November…

Which is it?
65AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:55
Re: #37
No way GTA moves the needle at this point.
Sales have been stuck at four digits forever.
38AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:25
Are there really that many idiots willing to risk a console ban just to play pirated games on console?
43AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:27
Re: #38
What risk? lol
It's already cracked, so there's no problem.
44AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:30
Is the retail price going up?
46AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:32
Re: #44
There's no reason it wouldn't.
Honestly, 55,000 yen for the Japanese PS5 is a steal.
It's barely selling, but that price is cheap.
51AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:37
Re: #43
So you're giving up on every future title, update, and DLC then?
You need an internet connection for that, you know.
53AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:38
Re: #51
That's the thing — you can do that without going through Sony's servers too.
Go actually watch some videos or check some sites.
66AnonymousOct 8, 2026 18:57
Wolverine, which flopped hard, was probably stocked expecting PS5 to pick up thanks to the GTA effect though.
77AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:15
Re: #66
If they expected a GTA boost and still only shipped 50,000 copies of Wolverine, that's not much of a boost.
69AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:07
If piracy's the real motive, that's shady, but hey, that's just good business sense.
71AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:10
Re: #69
Is Switch selling well because of piracy too?
72AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:12
Re: #69
It's not even selling that much.
75AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:13
Besides, people who actually know piracy sites are doing it on PC anyway.
Who's going to go buy a PS5 just for that? lol
76AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:14
Re: #75
Those guys probably weren't going to buy it in the first place anyway.
82AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:20
Re: #1
Is "a bit extra" really going to be enough?
This is GTA we're talking about. THE GTA is coming.
91AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:30
Re: #82
Back in the PS3 era it sold 300,000 in its first week.
Now, with fewer consoles out there than back then, even with a super generous estimate you're looking at 250,000.
"A bit extra" should be plenty, lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

A “trade presentation” is where a publisher walks its retail partners through the next season’s release lineup, directly shaping how much stock buyers order. The tweet quoted in the thread — “I mean, obviously” — was widely read as implying Nintendo’s January-March lineup looked thin, and that interpretation dominated the thread. What split opinion was the question of what’s actually driving PS5 demand upward: some pointed to the GTA6 effect, others to unconfirmed rumors like a disc-less redesign or other hardware changes, and still others suspected rising purchases aimed at piracy — but none of these go beyond speculation. As for the rumor that “PS5 units will stop including a controller,” that claim has only surfaced through overseas sources, and as of October 2026 there’s been no official announcement. One thing readers should be careful not to misread: the tweet itself is just one buyer’s personal take, not an official statement from either Nintendo or Sony.
