The story
A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live Sports/News) board kicked off with the line: “If you’re Japanese, wear NPB caps, not MLB caps.” Sparked by frustration that the baseball caps you see around town skew heavily toward MLB teams like the Yankees and Dodgers, the discussion snowballed — questioning people who wear them as a Showa-era throwback or purely for fashion, citing DeNA handing out caps to elementary schoolers to grow its fanbase, and noting the gap between teams in apparel rollout. Opinions insisting people should proudly wear NPB caps clashed with counterarguments citing logo design and the popularity of MLB brands, and the debate ended without any resolution.
What people said
Everyone and their dog needs to stop wearing Yankees or Dodgers caps and wear an NPB cap instead — show off your favorite team.
Everyone just copying everyone else with the same caps is straight-up garbage. Wearing an NPB cap and doing your own thing is way more likeable.
Kids and old men alike wearing NPB caps have basically gone extinct, and that's trash, trash, and more trash.
Seriously, take a page from this guy proudly rocking a YG (Yomiuri Giants) cap.
They clearly don't know anything about baseball.
Feels like the type who wears it probably doesn't even know who Darvish is.
Re: #91
Do you have to "know" baseball to wear one? Creepy — you seem like the type who's into trains.
Still full of "authority calls" to this day (slang for umpires ruling by reputation/status rather than the actual play).
Seriously, the umpires are what make baseball boring.
With that many blown calls even with video review, you want to ask how they can officiate with such a straight face.
And on top of that, the full uniform is basically my everyday outfit.
For the record, I'm not even from the Tokai region.
Looks cool — kind of like the Power Pros mascot guy (the chibi character from the baseball video game series).
That's because the Giants are putting real effort into apparel now.
They used to be the poster child for ignoring it completely, but now they're the most aggressive about it.
With a TG cap, someone who doesn't know baseball probably wouldn't even realize it's a Giants cap.
That genuinely seems to help grow young fans.
There's an idol who says a cap is what got her into being a fan.
I don't mean foreigners living in Japan.
The Yakult Swallows actually did bring back their old logo design.
It's like some Showa-era old man who's obsessed with America.
If you're Japanese, act like it — wear an NPB cap and put out the message "We won't lose to any other country! We'll raise up kids like this even as adults! Count on us!" That's what national pride looks like.
Actually, I'm on the spectrum 😤 (self-deprecating slang referencing a developmental disorder)
Exactly this.
Swallow your pride, wear a Yokohama cap, a Tigers cap, or a "Ham" cap (nickname for the Nippon Ham Fighters), humbly admit "yeah, I'm a bit of a letdown" — while still showing your Yamato spirit (Japanese national pride). That's so much more likeable.
Someone who can't read the room isn't going to be popular, obviously.
Going by the logo alone, I feel like the White Sox might be the coolest.
That's exactly the kind of girl you'd want to tell: "You should wear a Giants (YG) or Tigers (HT) cap instead — NPB is a treasure trove of good-looking guys."
It's the Miami Marlins now.
What about the Detroit Tigers?
Yeah, it's gotta be YG (Yomiuri Giants)!!
If you're living a normal life, you wouldn't just end up walking around outside in a baseball cap, would you?
Probably because they're bald.
Even guys with hair find it handy on days they oversleep.
Background and Key Points of This Debate
MLB caps became a fixture in Japan largely thanks to the influence of street fashion culture from the 1990s onward, with “the MLB cap as a design object” spreading separately from each team’s actual fanbase. NPB teams, meanwhile, long lagged behind on merchandise and apparel strategy, but in recent years efforts to win over younger fans have picked up — the Giants ramping up their apparel lineup, DeNA handing out caps to local elementary schoolers, and the Yakult Swallows reviving their old logo, among others. The thread’s disagreement boiled down to a difference in values: whether to treat MLB caps simply as “fashion” or to insist on “staying true to being a baseball fan.” Preferences around logo design and regional ties got tangled in as well, so no single conclusion emerged. It’s worth noting that some of the assumptions made in the thread about fans of particular teams don’t necessarily match people’s actual reasons for wearing what they wear.
