The story

Singer Chiharu Matsuyama appeared live on his own FM NACK5 radio show on October 4 and revealed previously untold stories about screenwriter Sō Kuramoto, who died on September 18 at age 91. According to Matsuyama, the two were close, but had two major blowup fights in which Kuramoto screamed at him, “You idiot! Get out!” He wrapped up the story by saying, “Next time we meet, maybe we can make up in the afterlife.” On the forum thread, opinions split over how to read Kuramoto’s reasons for getting so angry and over Kuramoto’s character in general, while plenty of interest also went to the behind-the-scenes detail that Matsuyama had recommended Masashi Sada for the theme song of “From the Northern Country.”

Chiharu Matsuyama confesses to the falling-out after two huge “You idiot! Get out!” fights with Sō Kuramoto: “Next time we meet, maybe we can make up in the afterlife”

Singer Chiharu Matsuyama appeared live on the 4th on FM NACK5’s “Chiharu Matsuyama ON THE RADIO” (Sundays, 9 p.m.), which he hosts, and revealed previously untold stories about screenwriter Sō Kuramoto, who died on September 18 of multiple organ failure at age 91.

At the top of that day’s show, Matsuyama began, “Mr. Kuramoto passed away last week. He died on September 18 — he was a playwright, a screenwriter, a writer, you know. I’ve said this on the radio before, but Mr. Kuramoto and I were really close.”

This guy's self-regard is unmatched in all of Japan

Isn't it because YOU have a short temper?
8AnonymousOct 5, 2026 06:56
The movie has nothing to do with '200 years of Hokkaido blood' lol
60AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:47
Re: #8
Hokkaido's history isn't even 200 years long to begin with
13AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:02
Saying they'd "drifted apart in recent years" — they were already drifted apart back in the "Eki" (Station, a 1981 Kuramoto film) days.
That's going back to the Showa era

Re: #13
So what's your actual point?
15AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:04
The way he holds the mic is a total ripoff of Mike Patton (Faith No More frontman)
17AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:06
If you got chewed out like that in a shop, the staff would be completely flustered
18AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:06
Had to laugh, that's not even much of a fight
23AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:15
No line breaks, weird random spacing — is this writer even a pro?
24AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:16
If this story's true, I think Kuramoto was the one in the wrong
25AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:18
This is funny lol
They're all buddy-buddy and self-congratulatory up to a point, then suddenly it's "what are you even saying" and they're fighting lol
26AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:18
Re: #1
"200 years of Hokkaido blood flows through me" or whatever lol
29AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:25
Someone who spent years making heartwarming masterpieces vs. someone arrogant enough to call himself a genius — anyone can tell who's in the wrong.
Also, dragging Ken Takakura's name in to justify himself is just awful

Re: #29
It's sweet that watching Kuramoto's work is enough to make you think he was a good person
83AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:58
Re: #29
People probably tell you you're narrow-minded, huh?
Sounds like a stifling way to live lol
30AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:25
I don't really get what set him off
32AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:26
If they fought twice in this life, they'll fight in the afterlife too. No idea how many years you even get to stay in the afterlife, though
33AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:27
Can't tell the tone of the actual conversation, but isn't this just someone taking a joking remark way too seriously?
34AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:27
Wasn't the complaint about "making Sada, who's from Nagasaki, sing the From the Northern Country theme" actually aimed at Sada himself?
48AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:35
Re: #34
No — Matsuyama turned down Kuramoto's request to sing the theme song himself and recommended Masashi Sada instead
35AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:27
Why's he so full of himself?
45AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:33
Hokkaido locals don't like outsiders acting high and mighty.
I bet plenty of people in Furano didn't like him either.
Actually, did that school-like thing Kuramoto ran ever produce any real talent?
It's not like everything about it went smoothly.
Though even without great results, he might've just been raking in the tuition money
49AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:36
Didn't he have the humility to just accept the theme song offer when it came to him?
Though it worked out fine with Sada doing it
63AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:48
Re: #49
If it's true he recommended Masashi Sada, maybe he just figured Sada would write a better song than he could?
50AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:37
"I'm not putting you in the movie."
"200 years of Hokkaido! Get out!"
(Guess I'm done with this guy)

Isn't that basically how it went?
53AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:40
Mr. Kuramoto should have an easy time finding Matsuyama in the afterlife too — he just has to look for whichever newcomer is shining the brightest
54AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:40
Birds of a feather.
Would Ken-san (Ken Takakura) really say "thank you" like that?
Sounds like a bad case of exaggeration-itis

Background and Points of Discussion

Sō Kuramoto was a screenwriter known for works like “From the Northern Country,” and he based his career in Furano, the drama’s real-life setting. He is said to have had a long-standing friendship with Hokkaido-born Matsuyama. It’s worth noting that, for now, the details of the “You idiot! Get out!” blowup fights described on the show, as well as the account that Matsuyama turned down Kuramoto’s request to sing the theme song himself and recommended Masashi Sada instead, come solely from Matsuyama’s own recollection — no account from Kuramoto himself remains. On the forum thread, both harsh assessments of Kuramoto’s character and comments pointing out Matsuyama’s high self-regard appeared, with no consensus emerging on which side was in the right.
