YouTube Issues “Final Warning” to Ad-Block Users: Report Says Access Will Be Banned

The story

Reports that YouTube plans to dramatically ramp up its crackdown on ad-blocker users sparked a reaction thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. Most replies piled on about the quality of the ads themselves — “the ads are way too long,” “it’s nothing but scam-like garbage” — with some users considering browser-wide blockers or switching to Premium. Others pushed back with “it’s the freeloaders’ own fault,” reviving the age-old standoff: put up with ads, or pay up.

YouTube Issues “Final Notice” to Ad-Blocker Users, Set to Massively Ramp Up Countermeasures

It has emerged that YouTube has decided to significantly strengthen its measures against users who watch videos with ad blockers enabled.

According to sources, YouTube’s internal teams have grown concerned that the spread of ad-blocker use is eating into ad revenue, and have concluded that warning messages alone provide “insufficient deterrent effect.” Going forward, the company reportedly plans to roll out, in phases, a system that restricts video playback itself whenever it detects an extension interfering with ad loading.

Why is YouTube so obsessed with making you watch ads?
Fine if you actually like ads, but they're forcing it even on people who hate them.
4AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:25
The ads are way too long.
Make a rule like 3 seconds max or something.
72AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:59
Re: #4
Exactly this.
How many minutes are they gonna make us sit through?
5AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:25
I wonder if apps with built-in ad-blocking are gonna get wiped out.
6AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:25
I've decided I will never, ever use whatever company or product gets shoved at me in an ad.
7AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:26
Even so, if it's Brave… Brave will find a way somehow (riffing on a famous anime catchphrase format).
13AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:28
Re: #7
Blocking at the whole-browser level is way too easy, so that'll probably get cracked down on even harder — assuming they actually get serious about it.
10AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:27
I saw somewhere a few years back that companies realized running online ads doesn't do much, and the bigger the company, the more they're pulling out of it.
11AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:28
Taking advantage of the fact that you can't install extensions on the TV app, sometimes you'll watch a 3-minute video and get hit with something like 2 minutes of ads.
15AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:29
Re: #11
Use SmartTube 😆 (a third-party ad-free YouTube client for Android TV)
12AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:28
There's seriously too many of them.
I could live with it if the ads were cut in half, but the frequency is brutal.
14AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:29
They need revenue to keep the lights on, so running ads at all is fine — but do something about the quality.
"Must-see for guys who want it longer and thicker!", AI-generated-celebrity investment scam ads, scammy products babbling about "patented technology developed by Such-and-Such University" — none of it's any good.
Even the ads for normal games and apps are these long ones designed to bait a mis-tap and dump you into the store.
Raise the quality of what you run and put out more short ones.
16AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:30
Classic move: scorched-earth to wipe out the competition first, crack down after.
Next up is the squeeze.
17AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:30
Oh! Guess I can't play videos anymore!
Welp, guess I'll go to TikTok then

Isn't this just how it ends up?
Unless we're still in the era where YouTube could get away with being the arrogant monopoly king.
18AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:31
Most of those are scam ads anyway, so there's zero point watching them. If you're gonna run ads, run better ones.
19AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:32
They could just be smarter about how they deliver ads.
Why do they have to get in the way of watching?
78AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:06
Re: #19
I thought the old banners that moved a little under the video were fine. Those didn't get in the way, and I'd click if something caught my eye. But I hate how intrusive today's ads are, so full ad-block for me now.
20AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:32
I'll actually watch them — just stop shoving the long ones into live streams.
28AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:35
Re: #20
And on top of that, those are the ones the streamer didn't even choose — YouTube force-inserts them on its own. That's nothing but a headache for the streamer too.
21AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:32
Fine, show ads, just screen them at least a little.
22AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:32
I'm not here to watch ads.
68AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:55
Re: #22
YouTuber: "I'm not uploading videos for free, you know."
23AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:33
If you let your guard down they just run these endless talk-show-style ads forever. Garbage.
24AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:33
Trying to cram a 1-minute ad in every single time you open a video is insane.
32AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:37
Do YouTube ads even work? 99% of what gets served to me looks like a scam.
36AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:39
Re: #32
It's only worth anything for specific YouTubers, pinpoint at best.
Also, the ads you get change based on the type of videos you watch.
Get flagged as "low-tier" and it's nothing but low-tier ads; get flagged as "upscale" and you get upscale-targeted ads.
Back in the day even random channels would get big-name ads, but once major brands started objecting to showing up next to controversy-bait content, YouTube started properly controlling that targeting.
34AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:38
YouTube: "Run your commercial, pay up."
Company: "Sure thing" *hands over money*
User: "Ugh, these ads are so annoying."
YouTube: "Get Premium and I'll make the ads disappear ^^"
Company: "Wait… so what exactly was the money I paid you for?"
37AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:40
Re: #34
Cheapskates who won't even pay YouTube aren't about to buy something after sitting through an annoying ad.
43AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:41
Re: #36
Why do you get completely different ads on the same account depending on whether you're watching on phone or TV? On phone it's wall-to-wall scam garbage, but on TV it's normal commercials.
46AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:44
Re: #43
Probably assumes the whole family's watching together?
44AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:42
I pay monthly for Prime Video, Hulu, and U-NEXT without a second thought — so why is YouTube the one service I stubbornly refuse to pay for?
55AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:46
Re: #44
There are people out there who make house-money-per-year just playing games or pulling nuisance stunts.
Those guys can't possibly have any real ad value.
76AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:04
Re: #44
It probably just comes down to whether there's a way to get out of paying.

Though more and more paid services are making ads mandatory anyway these days.

YouTube Premium: ¥1,280

Everyone's got their own way of thinking about money and
how they spend it — investing in yourself and all that —
but the opinion that "it's not worth skipping food or snacks
just to subscribe to this" is the complete opposite of how
I see it.
I've always lived by the idea that a little frugality is
fine if it's an investment in myself.

Do you eat a delicious ¥1,280 bowl of char-siu ramen and
feel amazing in that moment,
or skip it and get a comfortable month of YouTube instead?

Most people pick the ramen, I bet 😁w (a riff on a well-known "self-investment" copypasta template)

First time I've seen this — is this some famous copypasta?
113AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:59
I run uBlock Origin on Firefox and I've never once gotten a warning.
Then again, if you barely ever open YouTube, maybe you just haven't made it onto their warning list.

Re: #113
Just in case, I watch logged out whenever I'm on an ad-block browser or a download browser.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

YouTube has been gradually escalating warning displays for ad-blocker users since around 2023, and the “final warning” reported here looks like an extension of that trend. The thread split along two lines: frustration at the ads themselves, and frustration at people who refuse to pay. The majority view slammed long-form ads and scam-like ad content, while a sizable contingent — generally siding with Premium subscribers — argued “it’s the freeloaders’ own fault.” Some also pointed out that ad quality differs between phone and TV, apparently because YouTube varies which ads it serves depending on the viewing environment and assumed audience, though the thread reached no firm consensus on this. Worth noting: as of this writing there’s no official confirmation of exactly how far “banned from access” would actually be applied.
