New FF7 Title: PS5 Pre-orders Reportedly Outpacing Switch 2’s, Fueling Doubts Over the Simultaneous Multiplatform Launch

The story

A post claiming that PS5 pre-orders for Final Fantasy VII Revelation are outpacing Switch 2 pre-orders on Amazon sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha). Posters in the thread questioned the point of releasing simultaneously on both platforms, citing differences in digital download ratios between the two consoles and Square Enix’s broader shift toward multiplatform releases for all its titles following a change in management. Others pushed back, noting that sales rankings by platform have shifted well after launch for past titles, arguing it’s premature to call a winner based on early numbers alone — opinions remained split.

⚫PS5… Total: 7,000
FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION [Amazon.co.jp exclusive] In-game item "Armor: Midgar Bangle MK-III (DLC)" included – PS5
Bought over 5,000 times in the past month

So basically, even adding up every platform, the combined total is still unpublished — that reeks of a total flop across the board.

Nobody's buying a 100GB game.
Ocarina of Time (remake) is 30GB.
Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 are 50GB.
Square Enix just doesn't have the tech.
4AnonymousOct 4, 2026 11:11
Pragmata 17GB
Ocarina of Time 27GB
Requiem 32GB
Onimusha 34GB
Witcher 43GB
Cyberpunk 60GB

FF7R 102GB

Re: #1
But that crappy "S**tStation" don't shelllll, lolwww😂 (mocking slurred baby-talk for "doesn't sell" + a slur for PlayStation)
6AnonymousOct 4, 2026 11:11
But once it actually releases, the gap usually isn't even that big anyway.
7AnonymousOct 4, 2026 11:17
If PS5 sells 50k and a simultaneous release adds another 10k on top of that, isn't there basically no reason NOT to do it?
8AnonymousOct 4, 2026 11:19
The download ratio is like 20% on PS5 and 80% on Switch, so
the Switch version is obviously going to outsell it overall.
43AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:24
Re: #8
That 20% is for Switch 2
and that's worldwide, lol

Switch 2 Cyberpunk 2077 digital ratio: 24% ← this, lmaooo

Kingdom Hearts 4, coming out next year, will probably see a similar ratio — not many people are going to bother playing it on Switch 2.
51AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:53
Re: #9
It's not about "bothering" — people who own a Switch 2 mostly don't own a PS5 to begin with.
10AnonymousOct 4, 2026 11:31
By making Switch 2 part of the simultaneous multiplatform release, they've successfully dragged the game's own quality down.
That's about the biggest middle finger you could give every other platform.
25AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:00
The Switch version isn't even selling that well, and PS fanboys were already concentrated there from the start —
it's just the obvious result, no need to act so smug about it.
27AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:01
Re: #25
If anything, until recently it wasn't even released there, so it was literally zero.
34AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:09
Re: #25
Ahh, the good ol' "planting seeds for later" theory, much obliged, much obliged (sarcastic jab at copium-fueled reasoning).

Pathetic excuses from the Nintendo pigs (slur for Nintendo fans), incoming
HEEERE IT COMES (゚∀゚)!! (classic 2ch/5ch hype exclamation)

Re: #26
Love how salty you sound.
28AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:03
Nintendo's the "third-party killer" — why does nobody ever learn?
Forcing a multiplatform release to the point of downgrading the game is just plain stupid of Square Enix.
90AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:09
Re: #28
There was just a disaster where PS5's Silent Hill couldn't even beat Switch 2's Derby Stallion 2 — who are you to talk big right now…
41AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:18
Same thing happened back in the early Switch days — people were trash-talking PS using Kiseki (Trails) and Atelier sales,
but PS ended up losing out anyway once time passed.
Isn't it just dumb to try stirring things up over one early snapshot like this?

The whole "if it's below PS it's worthless" line never held water in the first place —
that's exactly why Switch multiplatform releases have kept expanding this whole time —
and you're still trying to comfort yourself with that logic?
45AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:30
Re: #41
Some people are comforting themselves with just a 20% share, so, you know, calm down.
59AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:10
Re: #41
Come to think of it, has it already gotten to the point where there's no reason to even release on PS anymore, Roach? (slur for Sony/PS fans, short for "cockroach")
52AnonymousOct 4, 2026 12:55
Even combining PS5 and Switch 2, it's probably going to fall short of the previous game's numbers.
53AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:00
Re: #52
Falling short is an understatement — dropping by half is basically the expected case.
54AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:03
The whole point was that PS exclusivity wasn't paying off, which is why it went multiplatform.
Can you please get that through your head already?
66AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:34
Re: #54
That has nothing to do with sales — it's just the fallout of a change in leadership shifting company policy toward multiplatform releases for every title.
In fact, titles that used to lean Nintendo-exclusive, like Asano's team's new project Elliott, Octopath Traveler, and Dragon Quest Monsters, have also been forced into that same multiplatform shift.
60AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:21
I mean, there's no point to that Trashwitch anyway (derogatory mashup of "trash" + "Switch").
72AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:42
Re: #60
Judging by the inferiority complex you're showing, it clearly does have a point.
65AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:34
🐷<"Trashwitch has nothing to do with it!"💢 (pig emoji mocking a Nintendo fan's outburst)
71AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:41
Re: #65
Well sure, to a 🐷 Sony-fanboy, "Trashwitch Station" has nothing to do with anything, I bet.

81AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:58
PS buyers are mostly just pre-order-and-flip-it-secondhand types,
not like Switch, which builds steady, gradual sales over time ("jiwa-ure").
82AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:59
Re: #81
Xenoblade doesn't really seem to be selling steadily over time though?
How long are you going to keep dreaming that?
84AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:00
Xenoblade 3 grew from 110k in its first week to 500k total, though.
How is that not steady long-tail sales?
85AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:01
Also, Rebirth was on a straight path to GOTY going by Metascore, but that same year the awards organizers suddenly shoehorned the Elden Ring DLC into the nominations, and the backlash was enormous.
Even I'll admit, after seeing that happen, I gave up on it ever actually winning.
86AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:03
Re: #85
Who did that even benefit?
88AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:05
Re: #87
Either way, your claim that it's "not selling steadily" is just false.
99AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:21
Re: #88
But Xenoblade 3 showed zero steady long-tail sales in Nintendo's own financial reports?
What are you even talking about?
92AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:11
PS5's had Silent Hill flop hard recently too, and even Kiseki (Trails) lost out to Switch 2.
You're in no position to be lecturing anyone else.
94AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:15
Re: #92
If you factor in digital downloads, I'd bet Trails 2nd is selling way better on PS5, by a wide margin.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The figures quoted in the thread come from Amazon’s bestseller ranking — “units purchased in the past month” — not official pre-order numbers released by the publisher or a market research firm, which is worth keeping in mind. It’s also been reported that Switch 2 third-party titles tend to have lower digital download ratios than on other platforms, around 20% for Resident Evil Requiem and about 24% for Cyberpunk 2077. Square Enix has shifted toward multiplatform releases — even for new titles that previously leaned Switch-focused — following a change in its management structure, and this simultaneous release appears to be part of that broader trend. At the same time, titles like Xenoblade 3 have seen sales grow well after launch, so some argue it’s too early to declare a platform “winner” based on initial pre-order figures alone.
