The story
On the night of October 3, 2026, a danjiri float being pulled through the streets of Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, overturned, injuring seven people who were taken to hospital. They are believed to be conscious. Danjiri festivals are held across a wide area stretching from Kishiwada and southern Osaka Prefecture to eastern Hyogo, Wakayama, and Nara, and overturns and falls have repeatedly occurred at festivals across the region. On 5ch, opinions split between those defending the practice — arguing that the thrill of charging around corners at speed is the whole point of the festival — and those criticizing it, saying that calling the event ‘well-controlled’ doesn’t match reality when safety management clearly isn’t working.

What people said
No doubt the yakuza types with tattoos are mostly bad news, but
sometimes you run into one who's a way better guy than plenty of people without tattoos.
Still makes you want to scold them with 'why'd you go and get a tattoo, man.'
Separate issue, but in Osaka you've got Osaka City employees with tattoos too, right?
That's the real problem.
Kishiwada's a fishing town, so they wrapped up on Respect-for-the-Aged Day in September, but the farming villages have their main event next week in October, after the harvest.
Nobody's even asking for it.
'Compliance'?
That's a foreign concept around here.
Sure, as long as you personally cover the economic impact of the hundreds of thousands of tourists it brings in — out of your own pocket.
Guess it's seppuku time (joking reference to ritual suicide for shame).
The team leader owes everyone an apology.
I always wonder why people like this don't just leave Kishiwada.
Festival season must be the worst for you.
It's ridiculous.
The people doing it believe it means something, so
outsiders sticking their nose in is none of their business.
They'll say stuff like 'ehh, it's just old neighborhood ties, what can you do~'
but once the festival actually kicks off, a lot of them get totally fired up.
Taking a corner at that speed, of course it's going to tip over…

Wow, that's more intense than I expected.
joining in, building a house nearby, coming to watch, all of it.
More like, 'the same mentality as Japan's bubble-era generation.'
Though with depopulation, that's mostly died out now.
Two people died this year at the Saidaiji Eyo festival in Okayama.
The head priest at Kokusekiji in Iwate was smart enough to bury the Somin-sai festival for good.
Wakayama and Nara have them too.
Where's the thrill in that?
Racing right up to the edge of tipping over —
that's what danjiri is all about.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Kishiwada is the best-known venue for danjiri festivals, but the practice extends from eastern Hyogo Prefecture through southern Osaka Prefecture to Wakayama and Nara, and the float-pulling in Sakai falls within that same cultural sphere. The festivals’ signature spectacle, “yarimawashi” — swinging a multi-ton float sharply around a corner at speed — is thrilling precisely because it’s dangerous, and injuries and deaths from overturns and falls have repeatedly occurred at heavy-float festivals around the country, including the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival, the Saidaiji Eyo festival in Okayama, and the Somin-sai festival at Kokusekiji in Iwate. In the thread, opinions clashed between those who say charging through corners at full speed without slowing down is the whole point of the festival, and those who argue that with accidents happening almost every year, you can’t really call safety management “thorough.” In reality, safety measures vary by district and organization and can’t be generalized. As for the cause and the on-the-ground operating setup behind this particular accident in Sakai, neither had been made clear as of this report.
