The story
On October 1, 2026, rankingoo.net released its “Favorite Active Female Idol Groups Ranking 2026 Edition,” based on a web survey of 4,036 respondents. Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku took 10th place with 129 votes, but it was the results above that that got the thread talking. Kicking off with a post reading “No way Momoclo is #1,” the discussion spiraled into debates over vote-rigging, the surprising staying power of AKB48 and Morning Musume, and whether BABYMETAL even counts as an idol group — all tangled up in questions about what “idol group” really means and who’s actually voting.

What people said
They retired from active duty ages ago, c'mon.
Still, I loved them back in the day.
"Dame. Zettai." (Japan's famous anti-drug slogan, "No. Never.") is exactly the kind of line only idols use.
I was about to say the same thing, but they're ranked 8th…
If you're actually a fan, I don't think you'd even call them idols to begin with.
Where'd they even run this poll to get a result like that?
Isn't Yellow about the only member still visibly active these days?
I only know Green 🙄
😭😭😭
Just the other day I could barely place one person in this copypasta, but now I'm up to about 10… fine, gross balding fat NEET otaku it is 😭

Korean groups are probably excluded from this ranking.
Staying popular longer than every Sakamichi group besides Nogizaka is honestly impressive.
Those two have such a long history that you can just tell they're rock-solid.
In Hello! Project, Morning Musume is still the most popular by far, and AKB's basically doing the same thing as the Sakamichi groups, just leveled up.
(Not counting group members doing solo side activities.)
Current buzzing solo idol popularity ranking:
1. Momo-chan (Momo)
2. Terashima Yufu
3. Myaa
4. Mioicchi
5. Sai-chan
6. Tokita
7. Hoshimachi Suisei
8. Sakamoto Rina
9. Asahina Rei
10. Onodera Popoko
I genuinely don't recognize a single one of these. Not exaggerating.
Guess solo idols really don't exist anymore. Never even heard these names before.
Question: Name the female idol group representing blank A below.
1980s … Onyanko Club
1990s … Morning Musume
2000s … ( A )
2010s … AKB48
2020s … Nogizaka46
This is a tough one.
I mean, SPEED works fine, doesn't it?
Wasn't Hello! Project actually at its peak in the 2000s?
The '90s feel more like the era of sexy-image groups like C.C.Girls and Girigiri Girls.
Two married, one divorced, one single, I believe.
As a Seiko Matsuda fan myself, that's still small potatoes.
Pink Saturn at the Sapporo Snow Festival.
Pros get the job done with a smile even in brutal conditions.

AKB's made a comeback, you know?
That's just being uninformed.
Momoclo being on there is strange, sure, but AKB makes total sense.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
The source here is a web survey (4,036 respondents) published by rankingoo.net on October 1, 2026, ranking currently active female idol groups — note that it’s limited specifically to “groups.” The suspicion of vote-rigging raised in the thread (post 27) comes from the nature of this kind of online poll, which tends to be swayed by how effectively a fanbase can mobilize votes. It’s also easy to overlook that, because the ranking is limited to groups, solo-active idols are excluded from the tally entirely — making them a separate matter from individual popularity rankings like the one in post 64. The thread’s two main flashpoints were surprise at how AKB48 and Morning Musume, both still going after all these years, remain so popular, and a debate over whether BABYMETAL even counts as an “idol” group. The observation that K-pop groups were excluded from the tally (post 43) also shows that this ranking assumes “domestic Japanese idols” as its premise.
