Xbox’s “Discs to Digital” Officially Launches — Sega Titles Now Included

The story

Microsoft has officially launched “Discs to Digital” today, a program that lets owners trade in their physical discs for digital copies, and Sega titles — previously excluded — have now been added to the lineup. The program works even on already-supported Xbox One consoles, meaning the only major third parties still not on board are Square Enix and Bandai Namco. On 5ch’s hardware/industry threads, discussion centered on why so many third parties agreed to license their games for this, and why Sony isn’t doing something similar.

Just insert your physical disc and get a digital copy in return (works on Xbox One consoles too)

Sega games, previously unsupported, are now included

That leaves only Square Enix and Bandai Namco among major publishers still not participating

Physical Xbox software barely circulated in Japan to begin with, so this doesn't really affect us

Re: #2
It's mainly about Xbox One titles, which did have physical distribution
6AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:18
Re: #4
One was only "better" by comparison — feels like physical releases petered out somewhere around Halo 5, into Halo 6

Re: #4
"Normal," huh, "normal"…
In Japan it fell apart once Happinet pulled out of distribution
5AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:17
I don't get why most third parties just casually agreed to this

They can't double-dip and resell it twice anymore
29AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:49
Re: #5
The "crap box's" share is so low and everyone knows it's going away next gen, so they probably figure nothing they do matters at this point
32AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:50
Re: #5
If it were a market where double-dip resales actually worked, sure, they'd do that — but since it's not selling anyway, even one yen from MS beats nothing
33AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:52
Re: #5
Probably because they can feel Sony's influence slipping — the "goodwill money" well is running dry and there's less cash to hand out
8AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:20
Sony could just copy this wholesale like it always does — why not? (playing dumb)
75AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:39
Re: #8
PS4 and PS5 discs don't have individual identifiers recorded on them, so there's actually no way for Sony to copy this 🙄
11AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:29
Just make OutRun 2 and Jet Set Radio Future playable
That's literally all I want

Cra-cra-CRAZY TAXI THREEEEEEE!!!
12AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:32
Release Halo 5 on PC already, you idiots
77AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:44
Re: #12
Halo effectively ended at 3, didn't it
14AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:36
This thread's barely moving, lol
Well yeah, nobody actually owns physical Xbox discs
16AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:37
Re: #14
It's a weekday morning though
17AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:38
No need for digital versions or upscaling for the original Xbox and 360 — just make every title disc-compatible
18AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:40
Re: #17
If they did that, it'd be god-tier
20AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:41
The original Xbox and 360 don't have serials embedded in their discs, so that's not happening
24AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:42
Re: #20
There's talk that MS might do this for older titles too
26AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:44
Re: #20
Well, actually, it seems they're going to support it after all
Pretty impressive, right
They're doing something completely different from Sony here
Sony is ending updates/patches for PS3 software in July 2027
They say they'll keep some support going for a while after, but since they're shutting down the servers, it's effectively unsupported
27AnonymousSep 30, 2026 09:45
The Xbox Series X disc drive that never got used at all
is finally going to see the light of day…

I'll admit I did press the eject button every now and then just to check it still worked lol

Re: #27
Sometimes I get the urge to play old games and boot up a 360 shooter or two
42AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:08
This just adds more options, yet people still show up to troll — honestly, nothing but envy at this point
46AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:15
Re: #42
The prediction is that Xbox will have the edge next generation
Even overseas fanboys apparently took a hit from Sony dropping discs
53AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:35
So now this is being hyped up as the spark for an explosive domestic surge in popularity?
Must be tough being a hype-man in the "trash box" (derogatory Xbox nickname) crowd
56AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:43
Re: #53
Nobody actually said this would lead to it catching on though?
61AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:54
Re: #53
This is exactly the kind of thing Sony — who's out here killing physical discs — should be leading on
Guess it's just that they can't double-dip and squeeze customers twice if they do?
59AnonymousSep 30, 2026 10:51
This is the very first move Sony should be making, so why aren't they doing it?
62AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:03
Re: #59
Well, they don't have a PC or cloud ecosystem like Microsoft does
There's no benefit for Sony in pushing this
71AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:22
Re: #59
Sonyyyy doesn't put serials on its discs
That's why, when this MS program first came out, they said some nonsense about how once you get the license you could resell it endlessly
67AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:14
This is a program that adds value to physical discs and helps them sell — it's not actually meant to push people toward digital
84AnonymousSep 30, 2026 12:03
Re: #67
Nah, this is obviously a move toward going disc-less, however you look at it
74AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:35
"Original Xbox and Xbox 360 game discs are not supported." — that's sad
78AnonymousSep 30, 2026 11:51
Re: #74
Unlike Xbox One and later, those discs don't have unique IDs, so there's nothing to be done about it right now
81AnonymousSep 30, 2026 12:01
Once the "trash box" pulls out for good, a flood of emulated versions will come crashing onto PC anyway
Just rebuy them during a sale, problem solved
This is just a byproduct of laying the groundwork for that
88AnonymousSep 30, 2026 12:17
Re: #81
No idea what this guy's even saying
94AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:19
Re: #32
Hm? Show me a source that says MS is paying for this.
95AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:27
Microsoft is strong-arming them into it, you know
Re: #94
97AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:30
So Microsoft strong-armed its way into getting 1,578 titles on board?
MS is terrifying (sarcasm)
98AnonymousSep 30, 2026 13:32
Re: #97
Oh, so it's outsold Forza now?

Background and Key Points of Debate

Discs to Digital works by reading a unique identifier burned into the disc to verify ownership and then granting the matching digital copy — a mechanism that, as posters in the thread pointed out, makes it technically difficult to bring original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on board, since those use a different (or nonexistent) identifier scheme. Meanwhile, PlayStation discs don’t carry the same kind of identifier, which is part of why Sony reportedly can’t easily roll out a similar program. As for why so many third parties agreed to license their titles, one view in the thread held that “if you can’t make money on the secondhand market anyway, it’s better for the revenue to go to the developer instead.” Opinions were split on whether the program is really a push toward a disc-less future or, conversely, a way to add value to physical discs and prolong their life — no clear consensus emerged.
