Is the ‘Meal-Cancelling Crowd’ Really Okay? The Hidden ‘Danger’ of Young People Justifying Not Eating

The story

An AERA article covering the Gen Z internet slang term “the meal-cancelling crowd” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Breaking News board. The term describes skipping meals with the same casual mindset as cancelling an appointment, and the article warns of the danger in this normalizing and justifying “not being able to eat.” Opinions in the thread split over the real cause: some pointed to intentional mini-fasting for beauty purposes or the benefits of autophagy, while others took a cooler view, suggesting it’s really just an excuse to cover up “being too broke to eat” amid rising prices, or noted that people are simply forgetting to eat because they’re glued to their phones.

Isn't it that some people just aren't eating on purpose, going for the beauty or diet effects of autophagy or whatever?

Re: #7
Three meals a day is too many for humans. Gen Z really gets this.
9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:35
You can live just fine on 3 energy drinks a day.
Energy drinks are the best!

Welcome to the world of diabetes-inducing stimulant addiction!
10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:35
Is everything just
too much of a hassle these days?

Re: #10
If you just say "cancelled," you can cover up the fact that you're actually too broke to eat lol
17AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:36
I used to eat incredibly unhealthy and I was fine.
Ah, the perks of being young.
26AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:39
Re: #17
No you weren't.
You'll definitely pay for it later.
34AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:40
Well, a lot of people are struggling with rising prices, so…
43AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:42
Did you know the average height of young Japanese people has started shrinking?
53AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:43
Re: #43
Yeah, that's what happens when you feed kids such pathetic school lunches during their growth years.
51AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:43
Are people too poor to even eat now?
68AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:45
Re: #51 Even with prices up, there's still plenty of cheap food around, like bean sprouts or natto.
Heck, you could stretch one bag of pre-cut cabbage over a whole day.
55AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:44
They're probably just so absorbed in their phones they forget to eat.
And on top of that, they're skimping on food money to spend on microtransactions and tips/donations.
106AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:52
Re: #55
That's probably it.
Young people these days are all smartphone addicts.
162AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:04
Re: #55
You sometimes see people at beef bowl joints frozen solid, so absorbed in their phones their food must be getting cold.
They're basically just watching videos — makes you wonder if it's really worth it.
65AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:45
Gen Z really is all skinny, muscle-less beanpoles.
214AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:15
Re: #65
Gen Z has small bodies, and staying up late since childhood already raises concerns about brain development — and now they're not eating either? Are they really going to be okay?
76AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:47
Guess it's only a matter of time before fasting influencers show up.
100AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:50
Re: #76 Can't beat Kataoka Tsurutaro (a Japanese celebrity famous for extreme fasting and ascetic training).
80AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:47
I'm just amazed they keep digging up minority trends like this that aren't even actually popular.
89AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:49
Cancel your meals and you'll lose muscle, health, and motivation — and end up joining the "life-cancelling crowd."
120AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:56
Re: #89
Gen Z already looks listless and dead-eyed even when eating normally and taking baths — skip meals too and it's only going to get worse lol
133AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:59
They're gonna regret it once they go bald lol
144AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:01
Re: #133
By then they'll have attained enlightenment and joined the "hair-cancelling crowd," so it's fine.
135AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:59
Aren't they cutting into all sorts of other time just to use their phones?
140AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:00
Re: #135
The phone basically is their body at this point.
136AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:59
I haven't eaten lunch in like 10 years.
Not that I'm broke.
I eat a normal breakfast, then eat and drink a ton at night.
147AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:01
Re: #136
So close.
There's this thing called the 16-hour health method — go 16 hours without eating and you get healthy!!!

Well, as for me, I've been doing that naturally since way back…
142AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:00
Wouldn't be surprised if they start cancelling their whole lives next.
226AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:17
Re: #142
Probably around their 30s.
Or their 20s if it hits early.
146AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:01
At this point they should just hole up in a pit like a self-mummified monk and watch short-form videos without eating or drinking until they die.
161AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:04
Re: #146
Sounds about right.
Stick a bamboo tube in for breathing.
Just keep ringing the bell.
171AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:06
Man, I wish I could cancel meals…
Ever since my diabetes diagnosis I've carefully managed what and how much I eat, and my numbers improved.
But I'm not losing any weight at all. Not gaining either, but…
Losing weight is way too hard!
184AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:08
Re: #171
Speaking as someone who dropped from 103kg to 75kg, if all you want is to lose weight, carb restriction is the strongest method.
Though you'll get constant head rushes whenever you crouch down or stand up.
192AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:10
Re: #184
That's "betiabes" for you (a jumbled version of the Japanese word for diabetes — just wordplay).
196AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:10
Re: #184
Doesn't seem great for your brain either.
And I hate the irritability too (´・ω・`)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“The meal-cancelling crowd” is social-media-born slang referring to skipping meals with the same casual mindset as cancelling plans. The AERA article frames this as risky because it lets people casually justify not eating with a “well, whatever” attitude. What split opinion in the thread was how to interpret the phenomenon itself. Some saw it as deliberate fasting aimed at beauty or autophagy benefits, while others pointed to causes quite different from what the slang implies — that people are actually being forced to cut food costs due to rising prices, or are simply forgetting to eat because they’re absorbed in their phones. The “danger of justification” the article raises is concern over eating-disorder-like behavior becoming normalized, but it’s worth noting that most of the thread’s comments are fragmentary personal anecdotes, so there’s a gap in tone between them and that kind of medical concern.
