The story
It has emerged that game creator Hideo Kojima is stepping away from his PlayStation-exclusive arrangement and deepening ties with the Xbox (Microsoft) camp, sparking a huge reaction on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Since he had long been treated as Sony’s flagship star creator, the thread filled with harsh words like “traitor” and “he’s now a full-blown enemy.” At the same time, some posters pushed back, asking “wasn’t it Sony who pulled away first?” — producing a mixed reaction that wasn’t simply good-versus-evil. There was also disagreement over his development setup and track record.
What people said
You can feel the hatred radiating off this one (lol)
Nintendo fans never fall into this kind of creator-worship mindset
isn't the guy himself actually pretty desperate right now?
He's got to go suck up to the company that used to be the enemy, lol
Kojima probably doesn't even see them as the enemy
Apparently he's got another project lined up too
Well, technically Sony betrayed him first though
Sony just let go of one single guy on their own — why is everyone this shaken up about it?
Well, the guy who supposedly owed everything to PlayStation just betrayed them, so of course it stung, lol
They're a platform holder and a massive global company
It's a completely different thing from selling out to Chinese or Arab money
"Why would you defect to the shitbox? That's just sad."
"Don't make me do this."
"I was actually planning to buy it properly this time!"
"So why would you go and pull something like this? If you betray me, I can't protect you anymore."
"Now all I can do is badmouth you."
deep down they're actually furious at Sony too — kind of like the 'White Gikkuri' meme (a character known for almost snapping out of his 'brainwashing' before relapsing), which makes it even funnier
Watching them scream "Kojimaaaa!!" while occasionally letting their real feelings slip, like "…it'll still come to PS too, right?" — priceless, lol
Both Gikkuri and Saltman were right on the verge of breaking free from the brainwashing, but they re-hypnotized themselves the very same day, lol
Good luck to both of them
No matter how this plays out from here, it's going to be funny either way
Kojima wouldn't go anywhere near Nintendo in the first place
It'd be like forcibly transferring the local prodigy from some rural technical high school
straight into a prestigious national university in Tokyo
No idea, but he's got some shady, bodyguard-looking guy standing right behind his shoulder — maybe that's why Kojima could afford to act so tough?
That's from E3 or somewhere, right?
There's no way you'd get into Nintendo's actual reception room
He'll say he's "going commercial," but I can only picture a future where it ends up 100% his own pet project again anyway, lol
From a player's perspective that's more options and more upside than a PlayStation exclusive — so why's everyone treating him like the enemy?
His games aren't really that slow to come out, are they?
Death Stranding took 4 years after leaving Konami
Death Stranding 2 took another 4 years
That seems like a pretty normal dev cycle to me
Guess in about 10 years Microsoft will drop him too and he'll move on somewhere else again
Is Microsoft really going to keep feeding a money pit for 10 whole years?
In 10 years he'll either be dead or retired
Game development at 73 years old is way too brutal
Background and Key Points of This Story
After leaving Konami in 2015, Hideo Kojima founded Kojima Productions and, with Sony’s backing, developed the Death Stranding series as PlayStation exclusives. In the console market, exclusivity deals with major creators directly affect hardware sales, so poaching battles between platform holders aren’t unusual. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over whether to frame this shift as “betrayal” on Kojima’s part, or as the result of Sony distancing itself first — the thread itself never reached a settled account of what actually happened. There were also posts arguing that “Kojima alone isn’t what makes these games — a lot comes down to the rest of the development team,” but that’s simply one poster’s personal take on how much credit specific collaborators deserve, not something backed by any official source.
