PS5 Launches Extended Warranty Campaign for New Buyers — 5ch: “Feels Like a Dying Console”

From our other sites

The story

Sony has announced a new-purchase campaign for the “PS5 Digital Edition, Japanese-only.” Anyone who buys an eligible PS5 console and applies by March 31, 2027 will get their standard 1-year manufacturer warranty extended by an extra year, for 2 years of coverage total. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, the choice to offer a warranty extension instead of a price cut drew comments like “isn’t this a sign of a console on its last legs that’s run out of budget?” and “are margins so tight they can’t even discount the console itself?” Others took it more simply as just a statement about failure rates and repair support, so opinions on the campaign’s real purpose were divided.

In two years disc versions probably won't even be on store shelves anymore 😭

Re: #3
It's the Digital Edition (no disc drive to begin with)
4AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:04
Budget's so tight they can't even discount the console itself, let alone the bundled games
6AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:05
First time I've ever heard of a campaign that's just "extended warranty"
25AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:15
Re: #6
Lol, this

Do they even realize themselves it's a dying platform?
I can really feel their resolve not to spend a single yen, campaign or not lol
10AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:06
There's no game I want badly enough to actually buy a PS5 for
11AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:07
"Ah, this is the pattern where the whole console disappears in two years"
12AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:07
An extended-warranty campaign for a dying console, lol
14AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:07
A campaign that really makes you feel Sony is genuinely broke
15AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:09
It's not like it's some game where "this looks like it'll break any second so now I can buy it with peace of mind" applies here
16AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:09
The campaign period is surprisingly long, actually
17AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:11
A "warranty timer extension" campaign, what a dumb idea lol
19AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:11
Wasn't there some similarly dumb thing before, like priority PS support access?
21AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:13
They're emphasizing the 55,000 yen price, so maybe they're not raising it until the campaign ends?
22AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:13
The Japan-only Digital Edition must be running a huge loss,
now it's clear they can't drop the price by even one yen, campaign or not
23AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:14
Impressive — I wonder how much budget they spent just on extending the warranty period?
24AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:14
"Please print out the email and include it when sending it in for repair" — I lost it
It really has that "scraped this together out of nothing" feel
27AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:15
I wonder if the controller is covered too?
If so, that's still better than some boring pack-in bundle
81AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:56
Re: #27
It's covered, but apparently the service ends after two repairs
Well, console repairs usually get resolved in one shot anyway,
so it's basically one repair for the controller and one for the console
28AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:15
Someone who never bought a PS5 until now isn't suddenly going to go "oh, the warranty period doubled, guess I'll buy one!"
29AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:18
Can we take this as "they won't raise the price from 55,000 yen until April"?
73AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:45
Re: #29
The other way around —
they won't lower the price
52AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:33
Discs will be gone in two years anyway though
56AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:35
Re: #52
I'd bet the whole crap-station console (derogatory nickname for PlayStation) will be gone too
57AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:35
Is this actually official?
That's insane…
61AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:37
Re: #57
Was there ever a time it wasn't insane?
64AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:38
So they're just turning into a repair company now…
69AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:42
Re: #64
The second coming of the AIBO route (Sony's robot dog that got discontinued, then lived on mainly through legacy repair support)
76AnonymousSep 14, 2026 10:50
They're acting all relaxed because the Switch 2 is flopping hard
84AnonymousSep 14, 2026 11:00
If you're a serious gamer you'd be better off getting the regular 2-year extended warranty instead
That gives you 3 years of coverage total and two controller swaps
87AnonymousSep 14, 2026 11:02
Re: #84
Is there a good way to break a controller on purpose?
Mine's covered but it just won't die… though the battery life has gotten worse
89AnonymousSep 14, 2026 11:09
If anything, isn't this good news, since it means they'll keep making the PS5 for at least 3 more years?
95AnonymousSep 14, 2026 11:24
Re: #89
Are you talking about the Product Liability Act rule requiring repair parts to be kept in stock for 2 years after announcing end of production?
103AnonymousSep 14, 2026 11:33
Honestly if you're only playing third-party games, it's insane value for money
It's gotten to the weird point where Nintendo costs more than Sony
105AnonymousSep 14, 2026 11:35
Re: #103
I think the PS4 was kind of the same way
Or wait, was it about the same price?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Extended-warranty campaigns are a promotional tactic manufacturers commonly reach for on products where price cuts are hard to justify, and this isn’t unique to the PS5. Many thread comments speculated that “disc-based games might vanish from stores in two years,” but that’s just the posters’ own speculation — Sony hasn’t officially announced any end to production or sales. Japan’s Product Liability Act also requires manufacturers to keep repair parts on hand for a set period after production ends, so the long-term warranty can also be read as part of that kind of support setup. Whether to view the extended warranty as a “sign of a dying console” or a “statement of long-term support” split opinion within the thread itself, and it’s not something the campaign wording alone can settle.
