The story
A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked debate over Switch 2, after posters pointed out that “despite being the weakest hardware this generation, the console plus a microSD card runs over ¥100,000.” The discussion centered on storage capacity: Switch 2’s usable space comes to roughly 230GB, far less than the PS5’s approximately 670GB, drawing a wave of complaints. While some titles — like the Final Fantasy VII Remake — need nearly the same amount of space on both consoles (around 90GB), others show a much bigger gap: Resident Evil takes up 75GB on PS5 but only 32GB on Switch 2. Opinions split between buyers who think the choice should come down to performance and value for money, and those who say it should be about which games you actually want to play.
What people said
But then you can't play Nintendo games
well, Switch 2. (a riff on Hitachi's old ad slogan, 'That's because it's Hitachi')
This should be posted on social media instead
And there it is — the classic 'What about PS?!' whining from a Switch fanboy.
Same goes for the original Switch and Wii U, though
The ones on shelves now only have 670GB free — that's barely enough for two copies of GTA
It fills up fast, so extra storage is basically mandatory
You can make 670GB work, but 230GB just isn't enough
That's so little lol
A new machine that's already struggling to keep up in just its second year
How many more years is it supposed to hang in there like this?
Maybe it's time to just accept reality: the most anticipated game in the world right now is GTA6
The fact that a crime game is the most hyped title says it all
It's not very approachable for Japanese audiences, so it won't sell to the mainstream here
🐷Oink, sure love spamming a ton of Switch-bashing threads, don't ya? Oink
The thread title itself says 'the weakest hardware this generation,'
so there's nothing wrong with bringing up other consoles for comparison
Your whole argument falls apart because you're assuming this is Switch-bashing from the start
Like Resident Evil — 75GB on PS5 but only 32GB on Switch 2
And yet the Switch version didn't even sell, lol
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Switch 2: 90GB+
PS5: about 90GB
What the heck is going on there?
No matter how you slice it, that's way too little space
Both UFS and SSD storage can realistically only be used up to about 90% of total capacity
Fill it past that and read speeds tank hard
Both probably won't even fit anyway
You need temporary working space just to download stuff, remember
So I guess most Nintendo games are garbage and not worth playing, then?
when regular users aren't even buying based on performance in the first place
By that same logic nobody would choose PS either
PS5 has great value for the performance you get
Switch 2's cost-performance is just terrible
Are you joking with this 'value for money' talk?
People choose a console based on the games they can play
Sure, spec value matters too, but only once the games you want are available on both
The graphics aren't that different from Switch 2 anyway, and PS can only be played in front of a TV, so mine's in storage
Lol, you definitely don't actually own a PS5
The graphics gap is way too big for that to be true
Background and Key Points of the Debate
Switch 2 ships with 256GB of internal storage, but once the system reserves its share, the usable capacity comes to roughly 230GB. That looks weak next to the PS5 (825GB-plus models), which offers an effective capacity of around 670GB, and the gap kept coming up again and again in the thread. That said, storage use for the same title can vary between platforms depending on compression methods and texture settings, so it’s not something that can be reduced to a simple number comparison. Performance and cost-effectiveness debates have long been a staple flashpoint on the Geha board, but real purchasing decisions usually hinge on “are the games I want to play on it,” so readers should be aware that the spec-war rhetoric and actual buying behavior often don’t line up.
