Switch 2’s US Amazon Purchase Count Plummets from 8,000 to 1,000 After Price Hike

From our other sites

The story

5ch users noticed that Amazon US’s popularity indicator for the Nintendo Switch 2 — the “bought in the past week” figure — had plummeted from an initial 8,000 units down to just 1,000. Since the shift happened during the first real sales stretch after the price hike, some in the thread read it as a sign of slowing momentum, while others stayed optimistic, pointing to VGChartz’s weekly data showing the Switch 2 still outselling the PS5. Opinions split over which numbers to trust, and the debate spiraled into an argument over whether handhelds or home consoles should command the higher price.

From 8,000 to 1,000 units? That's brutal.
10AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:24
It hasn't even been a full week since the price hike…
but more of that "past week" window now falls after the hike than before it 🥺

Here comes the VGChartz fortune-telling again!! (mocking VGChartz's figures as guesswork, not official data)

Classic — PS numbers always seem to shrink right when an earnings report drops.

Yeah yeah, can't wait to see if PS5 can claw this back

2026 Q1

PS5: 1.60 million units

The Switch 2's 8,000 figure checks out.
No idea about PS5.

Re: #24
Checked on the US Amazon site in a browser — I think the PS5 figure is right, ranked 19th at 1,000 units.
31AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:36
How many units for the disc-drive version?
33AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:38
Re: #31
Not sure, but it's not even in the top 100.
35AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:39
Re: #33
Whoa… sorry for making you go dig through the rankings lol
38AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:46
This barely still counts last month's numbers.
The real question is next week, isn't it?
49AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:55
Re: #38
That's probably it — there was likely one last wave of pre-hike last-minute buying.
62AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:43
And it's still leading the console that hit 100 million units.

At the 14-month mark:
Switch 2: approx. 22.55 million units
PS5: approx. 17.09 million units

Switch 2 leads by approx. 5.46 million units

The price ceiling justified by PS5's performance
and the price ceiling justified by Switch 2's performance — don't assume they're the same.
74AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:49
Re: #70
Because "performance" includes size too, you know.
72AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:40
The general consensus has always been that the overseas price hike wouldn't sting as much as the domestic one did.
That's why the stock price hasn't dropped — proof that the overseas investors who make up most of the buyers see it as a non-issue.
Of course, cheaper is always better, so Nintendo will keep playing its cards too.
73AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:42
Re: #72
Doesn't sound like there was much last-minute rush buying either —
guess nobody was paying it much attention to begin with.
78AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:06
Re: #74
PS5 is big, so a high price feels justified,
but if something Switch 2's size cost that much, you'd go "you're kidding, right?!"
81AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:18
Re: #78
If the graphics are barely different, then the smaller one is actually the higher-performing one.

79AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:08
Re: #78
"Bigger, so more expensive"? What kind of nonsense is that?
Isn't it usually the other way around?
80AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:11
Re: #79
Desktop PCs cost more than laptops, don't they?
83AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:23
Re: #82
Why would that matter? They're the same games, aren't they?
85AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:30
Re: #83
Same games, sure, but the hardware running them uses parts from different generations.
88AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:32
Re: #85
Bottom line, the performance barely differs, right?
Then the smaller one is the better deal.
If anything, the Switch 2 deserves to cost more.

Honestly, at this point you can't even tell the difference.

Re: #84
Comparing with still screenshots? In this day and age?
86AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:31
Well, you can tell the difference — hook it up to a TV and the gap will show.
But if it's still this portable, that's what'll sell it.
89AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:33
Re: #86
Hardly anyone thinks that way, which is exactly why both Resident Evil and Pragmata are underperforming in sales.
92AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:37
Re: #88
Unfortunately, most people just don't accept a handheld costing more than a home console of the same generation.
Nintendo itself is the one with a long history of pricing its handhelds below its home consoles, after all.
93AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:39
Re: #92
And Nintendo is exactly the one who smashed that conventional wisdom.
As more ports and simultaneous releases roll out, that skewed perception should correct itself.
94AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:40
Well, that's just each person's own mindset — otherwise the Switch 2 wouldn't be outselling right now lol
95AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:42
Re: #94
It's precisely because they couldn't smash it that we're at the situation in this thread's title.
Even in Japan, where everyone loves Nintendo, sales have visibly dropped since the price hike.
96AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:49
The reason Switch 2's sales pace is currently outrunning PS5's really comes down to two things:

– PS5 couldn't ship enough units at launch due to the chip shortage
– Switch 2 rolled out a Mario Kart discount bundle limited to its first year on sale

I'd bet the pace flips back next year.

It's actually being sold through a lottery system, you know.

Re: #100
They just held back shipments on purpose to keep it looking scarce.

Background and key points of the debate

Amazon’s “bought in the past week” figure isn’t an official sales report — it’s an internal popularity metric that fluctuates day to day. The plunge from 8,000 to 1,000 is likely, at least in part, the tail end of last-minute buying before the price hike wearing off, a point some in the thread raised themselves. On the other hand, VGChartz — cited as a comparison — is also just an estimate of shipments and sell-through, not an official figure, and some commenters dismissed it as “VGChartz fortune-telling” given doubts about its accuracy. Neither number should be taken as a definitive picture of actual sales. The thread also veered into comparing handheld and home-console pricing directly, but it’s worth noting the two use different components and hardware generations, which limits how far a straight comparison can really go.
