The story
5ch users noticed that Amazon US’s popularity indicator for the Nintendo Switch 2 — the “bought in the past week” figure — had plummeted from an initial 8,000 units down to just 1,000. Since the shift happened during the first real sales stretch after the price hike, some in the thread read it as a sign of slowing momentum, while others stayed optimistic, pointing to VGChartz’s weekly data showing the Switch 2 still outselling the PS5. Opinions split over which numbers to trust, and the debate spiraled into an argument over whether handhelds or home consoles should command the higher price.
What people said
Bought in the past week: 1,000 units
but more of that "past week" window now falls after the hike than before it 🥺

Here comes the VGChartz fortune-telling again!! (mocking VGChartz's figures as guesswork, not official data)
Classic — PS numbers always seem to shrink right when an earnings report drops.
Yeah yeah, can't wait to see if PS5 can claw this back
2026 Q1
NS2: 3.82 million units
PS5: 1.60 million units
No idea about PS5.

Checked on the US Amazon site in a browser — I think the PS5 figure is right, ranked 19th at 1,000 units.
Not sure, but it's not even in the top 100.
Whoa… sorry for making you go dig through the rankings lol
The real question is next week, isn't it?
That's probably it — there was likely one last wave of pre-hike last-minute buying.
and the price ceiling justified by Switch 2's performance — don't assume they're the same.
Because "performance" includes size too, you know.
That's why the stock price hasn't dropped — proof that the overseas investors who make up most of the buyers see it as a non-issue.
Of course, cheaper is always better, so Nintendo will keep playing its cards too.
Doesn't sound like there was much last-minute rush buying either —
guess nobody was paying it much attention to begin with.
PS5 is big, so a high price feels justified,
but if something Switch 2's size cost that much, you'd go "you're kidding, right?!"
"Bigger, so more expensive"? What kind of nonsense is that?
Isn't it usually the other way around?
Desktop PCs cost more than laptops, don't they?
Why would that matter? They're the same games, aren't they?
Same games, sure, but the hardware running them uses parts from different generations.
Bottom line, the performance barely differs, right?
Then the smaller one is the better deal.
If anything, the Switch 2 deserves to cost more.

Comparing with still screenshots? In this day and age?
But if it's still this portable, that's what'll sell it.
Hardly anyone thinks that way, which is exactly why both Resident Evil and Pragmata are underperforming in sales.
Unfortunately, most people just don't accept a handheld costing more than a home console of the same generation.
Nintendo itself is the one with a long history of pricing its handhelds below its home consoles, after all.
And Nintendo is exactly the one who smashed that conventional wisdom.
As more ports and simultaneous releases roll out, that skewed perception should correct itself.
It's precisely because they couldn't smash it that we're at the situation in this thread's title.
Even in Japan, where everyone loves Nintendo, sales have visibly dropped since the price hike.
– PS5 couldn't ship enough units at launch due to the chip shortage
– Switch 2 rolled out a Mario Kart discount bundle limited to its first year on sale
I'd bet the pace flips back next year.

Sony says there's no impact though?
It's actually being sold through a lottery system, you know.
They just held back shipments on purpose to keep it looking scarce.
Background and key points of the debate
Amazon’s “bought in the past week” figure isn’t an official sales report — it’s an internal popularity metric that fluctuates day to day. The plunge from 8,000 to 1,000 is likely, at least in part, the tail end of last-minute buying before the price hike wearing off, a point some in the thread raised themselves. On the other hand, VGChartz — cited as a comparison — is also just an estimate of shipments and sell-through, not an official figure, and some commenters dismissed it as “VGChartz fortune-telling” given doubts about its accuracy. Neither number should be taken as a definitive picture of actual sales. The thread also veered into comparing handheld and home-console pricing directly, but it’s worth noting the two use different components and hardware generations, which limits how far a straight comparison can really go.
