The story

Sensor Tower, a research firm tracking GTA6 preorders, has reported that following the new footage released on August 27, PS5 preorders jumped 606% on that day alone, while Xbox Series X|S preorders rose 127%. Before the footage dropped, cumulative preorders stood at 77% PS5 and 23% Xbox, and the surge comes after Rockstar had gone without releasing any gameplay footage since May 2025. On 5ch’s hardware board (Geha), opinions split over whether this gap simply reflects the difference in installed hardware base or signals real trouble for the Xbox camp.

GTA6 preorders opened on June 25, 2026, and research firm Sensor Tower has been tracking preorder numbers since the day before, June 24. Rockstar hadn’t released any gameplay footage since its second trailer in May 2025, and under those conditions, cumulative preorders built up right before the new footage dropped reached an estimated 4.6 million units according to Sensor Tower, broken down as 77% for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) version and 23% for the Xbox Series X|S version. Note that in Japan, the domestic package version doesn’t include a disc, and the PS5 version’s code is set to expire 170 days after release.

According to Sensor Tower, in the two days following the August 27 footage reveal, GTA6 preorders rose 572% compared to the prior 30-day average, and on the reveal day itself, the PlayStation 5 version reportedly recorded a 606% increase while the Xbox version saw a 127% increase.

Guess it's fine if you don't mind going blind playing at 30fps ^^

What happened to all that talk of 40 million preorders?
That's off by a whole order of magnitude.
4AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:44
That's an insult to Breath of the Wild, which runs under 30fps.
8AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:53
Even if you can't take the numbers at face value, it's probably just the install base gap showing.
No idea if it'll actually sell in Japan though.

Yeah, this really shows how insanely well the PS5 version of Forza Horizon 5 sold, huh.

GTA6 isn't Xbox Play Anywhere, so I'll buy it on Xbox first
and if it turns out good, I'll double-dip on the PC version when it comes out.

I'm a PC user, but getting lumped in with the 'Xbox/PC crowd' is seriously gross.

I'd quietly recommend switching to PlayStation (just saying)

Re: #54
My point is nobody owns an Xbox, so stop lumping us in as 'Xbox/PC.' Can't you get that?

Re: #55
Why not just use VAIO OS then? No one's stopping you.

Japanese Xbox users: just switch your region setting and you can play the uncensored North American version.
Japanese PS5 users: enjoy your CERO-rated (censored) version lol

Re: #82
Guess the Xbox version will outsell it in Japan then lol

Background and Points of Debate

It’s worth noting that Sensor Tower’s figures are independent estimates compiled by the firm, not official sales data. GTA6 arrives over a decade after its predecessor, and since developer Rockstar had gone a long stretch without releasing gameplay footage, this reveal is thought to have driven the preorder surge. On the thread, opinions clashed over the gap between PS5 and Xbox preorder shares: some argue it simply reflects the current generation’s installed-base gap, where PS5 holds a commanding lead, while others see it as evidence that Xbox-camp users are waiting for the PC version or migrating to other platforms — no consensus was reached. Separately from overseas preorder trends, it’s also worth keeping in mind that Japan’s domestic PS5 package version doesn’t include a disc, and its download code is set to expire 170 days after release.
