Even Yankee Doodle's gone soft and weak these days (a pun riffing on the team's nickname and the old song)

Re: #4
The Yankees have no future in "yakyu" (a mocking slang term for baseball)
They keep saying soccer is the future now
No wonder they won't spend money on baseball
6AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:36
It's cold and the fans are so obnoxious that pitchers don't want to sign there

Los Angeles is just too warm by comparison
7AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:36
They haven't won it all since Matsui, so they're not really a powerhouse anymore — this is about what you'd expect

Teruaki Sato: "Need yourself a Reiwa-era Triple Crown winner?" (Reiwa being Japan's current imperial era, since 2019)

Re: #10
Sato doesn't need to sell himself like that — he can pick any team he wants
No need to deliberately join such a cutthroat division with the most exhausting fans in the world

Back when it was set two years ago that they'd face the Dodgers, things were good
but then Judge's boneheaded mistakes and Freeman's fluke clutch hit made it a letdown

Sato of Japan
Sato of rice (a riff on the old commercial jingle for Sato Foods' packaged rice, punning on Sato Teruaki's surname)

Wouldn't the best move be to trade Judge for some talented young players?
18AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:40
This is such a hassle — just come to LA already
21AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:40
They've got the talent! You're just the one not showing up
23AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:41
The Yankees are probably scared to sign Japanese pitchers because of a certain someone (likely a nod to a past signing that flopped)
24AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:41
There's really no choice now but to sign "Sato-teru" (Sato Teruaki's nickname)
25AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:41
They really need to clean house in the front office

Otani should just go to the Yankees
Dodgers fans don't appreciate him nearly enough

Re: #35
If he posted his second-half numbers from this year while with the Yankees, he'd get absolutely roasted
39AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:45
Back when Matsui was there, the Yankees felt like the good guys,
but when they faced Otani's Dodgers in the World Series, they got treated like the villains

Re: #39
You're way too easily swayed by the Japanese media (a dig at "masu-gomi," a pun meaning "mass media = garbage") lol
Are you an elementary schooler who takes every report at face value?

*FYI, Judge was born in California and lived there through college — a true California native, y'know

Same goes for their ace, Cole

This is the price they're paying for how shabbily they treated Matsui

Re: #46
He's still doing work for the Yankees even now, and if anything he's treated quite well
51AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:48
He's getting up in age, so there's not much time left for him to win it all as the team's core player
though it's partly his own fault for not hitting
77AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:59
Re: #51
He doesn't get hurt as often as Trout, but
at this rate he'll just end up pickled with the Yankees the same way (stuck there, going stale)
since he probably won't have the option to go elsewhere
73AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:57
If they had Yamamoto, they probably would've won it all
They should have paid him even more to get him to sign
91AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:01
Re: #73
Signing "Yama-moro" (nickname for Yamamoto) was something Otani himself had pushed the front office on, so the Dodgers were going to land him no matter how much cash it took
76AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:58
Who knew Judge and Otani would decline at the same time
It feels like ages ago that the two of them were taking over the majors

Re: #76
It really is strange
their slumps during the season tend to hit around the same time, and when one heats up the other does too
Otani's knee got bad and he felt discomfort in his upper arm and landed on the IL, while Judge's season ended
what is it with these two?

Re: #78
Up until the All-Star break they were trying to sign Murakami for that kind of money
but his slump this season made that talk disappear
83AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:00
I think the difference between them and the Dodgers really just came down to having Yamamoto or not
94AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:02
Re: #83
Someone once put it this way
These days, Otani is just a bonus that comes with Yamamoto

though I'm the one who said it
86AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:00
Through the 2000s the Yankees had the most overwhelming financial muscle and could win any cash-stacking bidding war
Now they're out-spent by both the Dodgers and the Mets
And starting next year, the Angels are getting a new owner even richer than the Mets' Cohen
98AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:03
Re: #86
They lost the bidding wars for both Soto and Yamamoto too
113AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:07
Re: #86
The ownership changed hands and they stopped splashing out big money
108AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:05
When Otani signed his own contract, he said deferred payments were fine as long as it let the team aggressively sign players, keeping the luxury tax line in mind
Judge should do the same, but unlike Otani he can't make up for it with outside income
111AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:07
Re: #108
Baseball players tend to keep a pretty low profile (financially, outside the game)
Otani might just be the exception

Background and Key Points

It’s true that the Yankees haven’t won a championship since Hideki Matsui helped them to the 2009 World Series title — a point that lines up with the thread’s “haven’t won since Matsui” remark. In recent years, the Dodgers and Mets have pulled ahead in financial resources following ownership changes, and the Yankees have increasingly found themselves on the back foot in big-money bidding wars. Judge’s call for more aggressive spending comes against that backdrop, and the criticism of GM Brian Cashman follows the same logic. On the other hand, the mentions of Japanese players like Teruaki Sato and Munetaka Murakami are purely wishful thinking and jokes from 5ch users — there’s no indication the club itself has made any concrete approach, which is easy to misread. Likewise, lines like “Otani is just a bonus that comes with Yamamoto” aren’t meant as serious criticism but as self-deprecating, tongue-in-cheek banter — overall, the thread mixes genuine grievances with plenty of joking around.
