Thread Count on 5ch Plummets: “Without Bump Bots Keeping Them Alive, Dropping Below 300 Is Normal”

From our other sites

The story

A thread titled “Isn’t the number of threads being kept alive dropping somehow?” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, sparking discussion about a sudden board-wide drop in retained thread counts. Commenters pointed to a board-wide restriction halting script-based automatic thread bumping as the main cause, reporting that long-preserved Makino-related threads and old live-commentary threads fell out of the archive (dat-ochi) one after another. At the same time, some questioned why even threads that should’ve drawn attention — like Juice=Juice’s official announcement thread — got buried and dropped too, splitting opinion between those welcoming the end of the bumping and those mourning the loss.

What people said

Around 300, maybe?
2AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:20
The guy who was bumping them just stopped, that's all
4AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:23
Without someone keeping threads alive, dropping below 300 is pretty normal
5AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:30
Apparently a board-wide crackdown hit, so script-based thread bumping stopped working. / Also, the Juice=Juice hate-copypasta is gone too. / The mass Kunio-thread spam is still alive though.

Re: #5
I thought the Kunio copypasta and the Juice-bashing copypasta were from the same guy, but guess they're different people after all.

For the Kunio one, my guess is it's either Oyaki or Sayumin-tono.

The last thread compression (culling) probably happened at 21:40 on 9/27
7AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:35
Re: #6
Did it get compressed down to the usual 700?
Or even lower than that?
8AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:35
Felt like there were a lot of threads dat-falling (dropping off the archive) out of the history today
9AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:36
The ones that fell were just junk threads one guy was pointlessly keeping alive anyway
10AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:36
Yesterday at dawn, the maintenance-obsessed guy was raging that he'd gotten hit with restrictions

Re: #10
Seriously?!
Hell yeah!

Re: #10
Which thread was he losing it in?

Re: #10
Getting mad about it just makes you small-time.
The real ones quietly get back to work — buying the next UPLIFT (fan support/voting item) and carrying on.
12AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:41
All the Makino-related threads dropped at once
14AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:44
Re: #12
And there used to be tons of them
18AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:47
Well, Ookami (the Hello!Project board's nickname) has a lot of elderly users
19AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:47
Re: #18
What do you mean by that?

Re: #22
Ah, so it's the big-font thing
25AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:51
So the anti-fan threads couldn't be kept alive anymore and fell?
27AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:52
Re: #25
It was mostly Makino's job-bragging threads.
The anti threads weren't being bumped and were left to fall quickly anyway.
28AnonymousOct 9, 2026 08:53
Re: #15
That's just the default size, man

Re: #28
Don't engage.
He's just desperately trying to change the subject.
30AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:02
Yeah, the threads that were being pointlessly kept alive are indeed falling now
31AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:03
Re: #27
Even though it's nothing but threads about jobs nobody cares about, nobody's reading, nobody's listening to, lol
32AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:05
What's happening here is just like the Suzuki Airi threads
33AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:12
Hope this means the "kiriban" (round-number post) spam is gone too
34AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:14
Re: #7
It was at 737 at 21:31, then down to 702 by 21:41.
Didn't track the details in between.
35AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:14
Whoa, you're right!
It's dropped like crazy lol
37AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:32
Most of the junk threads are gone — guess the guy who was bumping them is panicking now
38AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:36
For Ookami, a cap of 700-730 threads is fine, but the proper number should really be around 200
41AnonymousOct 9, 2026 09:41
I don't get why a thread like this, which seemed fairly important and likely to grow, fell so fast

Speaking as a Juice=Juice fan, I think it's simply that nobody's interested in the content, plain and simple
57AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:11
Wish people would stop endlessly keeping dead live-commentary threads on life support
59AnonymousOct 9, 2026 10:12
Re: #57
Sounds just like the Suzuki Airi threads, lol

There's a live-commentary thread from a week ago still hanging around

Background and Key Points of This Topic

5ch boards have a cap on how many threads can be kept alive at once, and as new threads appear, the oldest ones get pushed out and fall into the archive (dat-ochi) in order. Normally, even low-traffic chat threads can stay within that cap indefinitely by having a script repeatedly bump them with mechanical posts (“hozen”), but this time that bumping itself appears to have been stopped by a board-wide restriction. Posters in the thread noted that anti-fan threads and already-finished live-commentary threads that had been unnaturally kept alive by bumping dropped all at once — while, oddly, announcement threads that had nothing to do with the bumping also got buried and lost. This revealed that a high thread count wasn’t necessarily a sign the board was genuinely active. Reactions were split between those welcoming the end of the bumping and those lamenting the useful threads that got buried along with it.
