First Time at Ramen Kamukura: 5ch Calls It a ‘New Sensation Built Around the Soup’

From our other sites

The story

A thread popped up on 5ch’s “Anything Live” board (なんでも実況G) started by someone visiting the Osaka-born ramen chain Kamukura for the first time. Photo after photo showed off its mild, milky-white soup loaded with napa cabbage, and opinions split — some called it “surprisingly pricey for what it looks like” or “something you could just recreate at home.” Others, though, praised it as a genuinely different experience, calling it “a new kind of ramen built around the soup” and “a sensibility you just don’t find in the Kanto region.” The thread stayed lively throughout, circling around one central question: what exactly is Kamukura?

Went with the "toppings hand-picked by a true Osakan" set…?

Re: #19
Whoa, that got expensive fast
21AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:43
What is this? Some special location?
Seems way too pricey

Re: #21
Yeah, true
22AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:43
The regular one's fine, but the rest is pricey
23AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:43
Kind of rare for an Osaka-born chain to make it into Tokyo
24AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:43
Always had the image of some lame place trying to act healthy
26AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:44
Yeah, it's the kind of taste you could recreate at home
Actually, if dinner tasted like this, you'd honestly be a little let down
28AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:44
Makes you wonder what "value" even means in "value set" anymore

Here it comes…!

Chives
43AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:49
Soup's got a gentle flavor, really good.
45AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:49
Napa cabbage in ramen, that's pretty original✨
53AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:52
Not sure how to put it
It feels less like ramen and more like eating a really good Chinese-style napa cabbage soup
62AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:55
Re: #53
You mean a not-so-tasty napa cabbage soup, right
55AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:52
I straight up forgot this was ramen until the noodles showed up
It genuinely changed how I think about ramen

This is wild, it changed my whole image of Osaka
57AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:53
Both the soup and the noodles are great on their own, but weirdly they're a terrible match together — a rare kind of ramen
63AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:55
Re: #57
I kind of get that
Precisely because the soup's so good, it ends up feeling like the broth you finish off a hot pot with
You could call that the downside of cranking the soup quality up so high for drinking on its own

If they punched the soup up to match the noodles better, they'd lose that mellow, deep flavor that makes it "Kamukura"
It's a tough balance
58AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:54
Of course the seasoned egg is perfect too💯
64AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:59
Worlds apart from that whole offal-and-batter-food-drowned-in-sauce image of Osaka…
Honestly, I underestimated the Osaka ramen scene…
69AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:03
Gonna take back what I said earlier
Drinking it as soup on its own, the flavor really is pretty strong
That said, it's true it lacks punch as ramen

71AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:04
This was a genuinely thought-provoking ramen experience
It's something totally new, a sensibility you just don't get in Kanto
(Makes me wonder if this "Soup with Noodle" label is their way of signaling that the soup comes first. You can feel the commitment to it.)

Re: #71
Don't post the after-you've-eaten shot, that's gross
76AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:09
This is clearly a landmark spot you could call the epicenter of ramen's "3rd Wave" — soup-first ramen
Definitely coming back
86AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:22
Doesn't really feel like ramen
It's more like a noodle dish built for enjoying the soup
But hey, that works as its own thing
89AnonymousSep 22, 2026 21:26
Re: #86
I mean, it's basically just noodles for finishing off a hot pot

Background and Talking Points

Kamukura is a ramen chain founded in Osaka in 1986, known for pairing a mild soy-sauce-based flavor with a milky-white (paitan) soup slow-simmered with napa cabbage and bean sprouts. It stands apart from the typical rich tonkotsu or shoyu ramen, and because the soup takes center stage, it’s easy to come away thinking “this feels more like the noodles you finish off a hot pot with than actual ramen.” In the thread, opinions split between people praising this uniqueness as “a new set of values” and those calling it “a homestyle taste for the price” — a divide rooted in Kamukura’s own distinctive concept from the start. Note that “Kinryu,” mentioned elsewhere in the discussion, is a separate ramen chain known around the Dotonbori area, with different shops and a different flavor from Kamukura.
