Capcom: “Monster Hunter Buyers Surely Want to See the Story” — 5ch: “That’s Exactly the Worst Part”

The story

A quote attributed to Capcom about Monster Hunter Wilds — to the effect that “buyers surely want to see as much of the story as possible” — became a hot topic on 5ch. Thread posters pointed out that story presentation has been emphasized ever since World, and many questioned the logic of treating a “high story-clear rate” as proof of success, with several calling the story “the single biggest complaint.” Others spoke up in defense of the characters and cutscene direction, splitting opinion over the series’ approach to storytelling.

Anyone who *doesn't* think the story is unnecessary is the weird one
6AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:48
Here we go again with the forced slow-walk sections, guaranteed ("tokotoko" = the slow, forced walking-and-talking story segments)
Are they stupid or what
8AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:49
9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:50
Wait, were they actually confident about that garbage excuse for a story?!
13AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:51
Re: #9
Tokuda kept proudly insisting World sold because of its story, and now he's insisting Wilds is getting praised because its story-clear rate is high

Re: #13
I played through to the story clear. Haven't touched it since — but Wilds is the only Monster Hunter where I stopped playing right after the story
47AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:02
Re: #13
The story is the worst part of that game, honestly…
10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:51
Are they still doing this?
15AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:52
Re: #10
That's because the Master Rank (G-Rank) interviews have started
16AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:52
And the battle against Ta-Shin still isn't over, you know
27AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:56
Re: #16
The way they're playing it up as a joke made it seem like it'd actually be interesting
26AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:56
I just hope they've actually learned something with Wilds
39AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:58
Re: #26
The new director for Wilds Ascendance is acting like this, so clearly they don't think anything was wrong at all

34AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:57
Of course everyone finishes the story once — online play is the real endgame, so naturally everyone clears it at least a single time
43AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:00
Re: #34
Apparently a lot of people quit right at the first Anjanath in World, so this time they decided to force everyone through to the story clear
36AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:57
Does current Monster Hunter even have a story?
40AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:00
Re: #36
It does
It really started in earnest two games ago with World, not counting Wilds' DLC
45AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:01
Re: #36
It does, but it wraps up in about 10 hours — the real game is what comes after the story
41AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:00
World was a slog since you couldn't skip cutscenes, but the characters were fun so it was still okay — though the Commander, useless both story-wise and gameplay-wise and constantly yapping, was annoying
46AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:01
Re: #41
Did Iceborne get a pass…?
42AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:00
I actually like the story
51AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:03
Re: #42
That Nausicaä knockoff?
48AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:02
The exact opposite approach from FromSoftware
57AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:04
Re: #48
Honestly they're pretty bad at that too
61AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:05
Like the old days, the story should just progress through villager conversations at each Hunter Rank, with cutscenes limited to monster ecology stuff — going all the way back to the PSP era
65AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:07
Re: #61
I loved the ecology cutscenes in MH2

Re: #71
Who knew the forbidden zone would have an AEON store right there in the forbidden zone
80AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:17
It's not that we don't want a story, it's that we don't want a deep (annoying) one
That bratty black-haired kid going "hunt it, hunt it, hunt it" was genuinely unpleasant
83AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:21
Re: #80
👶 Don't kill Arkveld!
88AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:27
I haven't played Wilds, so fill me in — in the end, was there actually a "tako-shi-ana" situation or not? (obscure board slang, meaning unclear)
89AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:28
Re: #88
If there had been, it wouldn't get beaten to death as a running joke like this
90AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:29
Re: #88
Nope
These days pretty much every other game has one, but this is the one game that doesn't
94AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:30
Re: #88
Apparently you're not even allowed to hunt monsters the Guild hasn't authorized in the first place
99AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:35
The more clearly defined the story is, the more it highlights how unnatural it is that you just keep hunting monsters
103AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:36
Re: #99
If the story were more like "we're doomed unless we hunt or drive off every monster here!" that'd be one thing, but when it's about "protecting the ecosystem" it just contradicts itself constantly
101AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:35
I bought it because it's Monster Hunter, but as someone who avoids "cutscene games," Wilds was the worst. I'll buy the DLC too, but if it's another cutscene-fest I'm giving it an instant 👎. Is Monster Hunter picking up Square Enix's bad habits or something?

Re: #101
You can kind of see them wanting to make an FF game in there… Like, who's even asking for "roles"?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Monster Hunter’s story presentation used to amount to little more than villager conversations and monster-ecology cutscenes up through the PSP era, but that changed with the introduction of full-fledged cinematic storytelling starting with 2018’s World. In the thread, opinion split between those who welcomed this shift and those skeptical of using a “high story-clear rate” as proof of its success. A recurring point was the disconnect between the series’ traditional style of play — where “the endgame content is the real game” — and a production approach that now emphasizes story. Posters also contrasted this with FromSoftware’s minimal-exposition style and voiced concern that Monster Hunter might be edging closer to other companies’ story-driven titles. Notably, the debate wasn’t framed as mere taste in presentation, but as a question touching the series’ very identity.
