The anime's way worse, honestly. The basketball scenes are hilariously bad.
I don't care about the movie either way, but the anime's definitely a no.
It's just the theme song and nostalgia goggles making the old-timers who watched it back then overrate it.
That anime was just poorly made.
All I remember is being creeped out by the swarm of shills defending it online.
There should be a system where you can get a refund for works whose creator has no intention of ever finishing them.

With a dud like that, they probably can't run a proper character-merchandise business off it either.
In fact there's barely even a proper game collab for it.
It ending where it did was great because it let you imagine what happened next.
Doing a sequel to that just feels like an unnecessary tack-on.
It doesn't have to be 'after that' — they could just do the Ryonan match instead.
They could make a new movie for every character.
Next time just make someone other than Ryota the lead.
There's a point in making it because middle-aged guys will happily go watch it.
I think this one's a dud too, but apparently there's demand for it.

He's the least popular character, and it's an episode that never appeared in the manga at all.
If anything, Sakuragi's the one with an actual tragic backstory.
I thought it fit really well, actually.
In fact it was the exact voice I'd personally guessed for him beforehand (don't know the actor's name though).
As an actual basketball match, the theatrical version is more polished.
Bottom line, the original manga reigns supreme.
The manga leans heavily on back-and-forth banter between players during the match, and the anime reproduces that word-for-word, which makes it feel even more off.
There's no way players would have time to chat like that in the middle of an actual game.
It used to be on Netflix, but it's disappeared at some point without me noticing.
The anime version is just bad in every sense of the word.
I was in my school's basketball club when I watched the anime as a kid — I think it was the practice match against Ryonan?
There was a scene where the players' positioning was completely wrong, and I remember being like 'huh?!'
So yeah, the match scenes really were that bad.

Just adapt Eiji Yoshikawa's original novel straight, no weird twists needed.
They already made Kojiro deaf-mute (in Vagabond), so
a faithful adaptation isn't possible anymore.
Nobody asked for Ryota to be the lead.
