The story

On the morning of September 14, a combine harvester that had gotten stuck at an Odakyu Line railroad crossing in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, collided with an Odakyu Romancecar train. None of the roughly 150 passengers and crew aboard the train were injured, nor was the man in his 70s who had been driving the combine. On 5ch’s News Speed+ board, the thread lit up with a wide range of topics — jokes about giant-robot “combining” sequences sparked by the word “combine,” technical points about the structure and ground pressure of farm machinery, and trivia about the Odakyu Romancecar’s front observation seats.

Technically it's a 'harvester,' but us dumb Japanese folk (lit. 'ponji,' self-deprecating slang) just borrowed the 'combine' from 'combine harvester,' and it stuck

Even though the rails at a crossing are embedded flush with the road, is there really enough strength to hold up when a combine's weight rolls over the gap?
Didn't it just get run over, bend out of shape, and get itself stuck?

It's got to be lighter than the train, at least,
and it's not exactly fast either

Combines run on rubber tracks, so their ground pressure is so low they can cross mud deep enough to swallow rubber boots without sinking
But in exchange they're built flimsy — on paved roads they can only manage 2-3 km/h, any faster and they shake so violently they look ready to fall apart
117AnonymousSep 14, 2026 17:26
Is the Romancecar the one that leaves Shinjuku going 'fiiin~'?
Is it really all that great?

It's handy for sneaking off on an affair trip

#118
Isn't that pretty much true of all private railways?
Plenty of 'express' trains that turn into local stops after Tanashi, or after Kawagoe-shi, and so on
118AnonymousSep 14, 2026 17:26
LOL, the Odakyu Line 'express' from Honatsugi to Odawara stops at literally every station
166AnonymousSep 14, 2026 18:41
With that front observation window, what happens to the passengers sitting there?

It's the EXE model, so that's the driver's cab up front, not a passenger seat

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Combine” (kombain) is Japanese shorthand for a combine harvester — a machine that both cuts and threshes rice in one pass. As posters in the thread explained, because it runs on rubber tracks its ground pressure is so low it can barely sink even into deep mud, but that same design makes it structurally delicate, capping it at just 2-3 km/h on paved roads. Farm machinery getting stuck at railroad crossings is a recurring story during harvest season, but this time it was fortunate that no one — on the train or driving the combine — was hurt. The thread also touched on the Odakyu Romancecar: while some Romancecar models do have a front observation seat, posters corrected the record to note that the EXE model believed to be involved here has a driver’s cab at the front instead — worth knowing, since many people assume “Romancecar” automatically means a front-view seat.
