Isn’t PC, Xbox, and Switch 2 Enough?” — Opinions Split on Console Choices

From our other sites

The story

A thread titled “Isn’t it fine to just have PC, Xbox, and Switch 2?” on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked a debate over console choices. Replies raised price concerns like “Xbox costs 100,000 yen, who’s buying one at this point?”, along with comments on GTA6 such as “it’s basically a PS5 title” and “PS5 gets censored so I’ll play it on Series X.” Opinions also split over whether choosing Xbox counts as a “compromise,” with those prioritizing value for money going back and forth against those prioritizing exclusive titles.

Honestly, that's all you need
Just pick whichever hardware you like and combine them however you prefer
4AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:56
If you've got a PC, you can emulate retro games whether they were arcade or console (consoles get derisively called "home trash" by PC gamers), and modern games are basically all multiplatform anyway, so PC alone is enough
7AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:58
Re: #4
There's a criminal right here lol (jab that emulation = piracy)
6AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:57
Xbox costs 100,000 yen, so
pretty much nobody's buying one anymore though
8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:58
Re: #6
Is that so
PC's always been pricier than that though
13AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:01
PC is a must
Switch is a matter of preference
PS/Xbox are out of the question
16AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:03
Re: #13
You say it's a must, but telling someone to buy a PC now is just dumb, honestly out of the question
17AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:03
Re: #16
What about Xbox?
19AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:04
Re: #16
Honestly the price hikes are in memory and storage, which you need even for a low-spec build, so the conditions are the same everywhere
27AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:07
If it's too expensive, just buy an older model — way better than buying a console that barely has any games
31AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:08
Re: #27
What Steam-exclusive game — PC-only, in other words — is actually worth spending over 300,000 yen building a PC for?
29AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:07
Apparently Xbox is the only one where turbo/rapid-fire controllers don't work
Though I've only got the official one
30AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:08
Re: #29
When would you even use that?
46AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:17
Re: #29
PS doesn't allow it either
32AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:09
Re: #31
There are uses
Though honestly you're probably only playing lightweight games
34AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:10
Re: #32
I'm not asking if there are uses, I'm asking for specific game names
33AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:09
Re: #30
Don't you use it for grinding in Earth Defense Force?
35AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:10
Re: #33
I bought one back in the Super Famicom days, decided it was pointless, and haven't touched one since
40AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:12
Actually, I can't really think of many demanding games these days
41AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:13
Re: #40
Guess you're not installing mods then
44AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:15
Re: #41
Most people don't install that many anyway
And Japanese localization is standard these days too
45AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:16
Re: #44
4096 (4K) texture mods
49AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:18
Can't afford PC anymore
Going all-in on Switch 2
50AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:22
Re: #49
Same feeling here honestly
If I ever truly can't afford a PC anymore, that's what I'll do too
52AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:25
Don't need Xbox
Just keep Steam and Switch
53AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:26
Re: #52
That's the combo that locks you out of GTA, though
55AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:37
Setting console-war trolling aside, I honestly can't see Sony's vision at all
They're the one company whose direction I just don't get
The theory that fits best is that they're retreating, and that says it all
56AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:44
Re: #55
It's pretty clear though
It's a tool for boosting capital
They've said anime and games are their pillars, and they're actually turning a profit from it
"Retreating" is just wishful thinking
Why would they tear down their own pillar?
71AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:55
There's not much reason to specifically choose PS — if I had to put it into words, I'd call it a compromise
73AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:57
Re: #71
Isn't console gaming itself already a compromise at that point?
You say you're choosing based on value for money, so just tell me the actual reason you'd deliberately pick a 100,000-yen Xbox
84AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:08
Re: #78
People who buy one don't overthink it that much
Put into words it is a compromise, but since most people are already making a compromise, they wouldn't pick Xbox specifically
The reason to deliberately choose Xbox isn't even a compromise
87AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:10
Re: #84
Right, put into words it is a compromise
Though like the person above said, if you're after exclusive titles, then even a console purchase isn't really a compromise
91AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:11
Re: #87
So is there actually a reason to deliberately choose Xbox?
Looking at Re: #71 it sounds like there's supposed to be a reason for Xbox
75AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:59
Re: #73
Well first, let's think about why you'd buy a game console in the first place
77AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:02
Re: #75
Because you want to play games, right?
But I want to know why you'd deliberately buy the pricier option when you can play the same games elsewhere
If you just want to play easily for 55,000 yen, you buy a PS
No overthinking needed, that's the normal choice
Which is exactly why Xbox isn't selling, right?
78AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:06
Re: #77
That's exactly what a compromise is
It's not worth deliberately buying the pricier thing
You know "compromise" isn't some dirty word, right?
117AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:29
Re: #77
Right now Xbox is the most half-baked option
If you're paying more than a PS5 costs, you should just get a PC — Xbox has the worst value for money
99AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:14
Looking at it closely, I'm starting to think Xbox covers pretty much everything you'd need
It covers retro game demand too
102AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:15
Re: #99
It does cost 100,000 yen though
If anything, without that level of functionality, it wouldn't be worth paying an extra 50,000 yen for
120AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:32
Re: #99
Aren't there a lot of games available on PC but not on Xbox?
110AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:21
Lol they're all trash that can't even run GTA6
That game's basically a PS5 title anyway
114AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:25
Re: #110
PS5 gets censored so I think I'll play it on Series X
Once you own both PS5 and Series X, you barely end up turning the PS5 on anymore

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Threads like this are a staple of 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, repeatedly popping up to compare the market share and pricing of PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Xbox sells in much smaller numbers in Japan than other platforms, and the “100,000 yen” figure mentioned in the replies appears to refer to the street price of the Xbox Series X hardware, though it is not an official up-to-date price. The comments about GTA6 being “basically a PS5 title” and “getting censored on PS5” are likewise just posters’ speculation and personal impressions — this thread alone doesn’t confirm whether multiplatform support or content differences between versions have been officially announced ahead of release. The debate split over whether choosing Xbox counts as a “compromise,” with those who prioritize price differences and those who prioritize exclusive software lineups reading the situation differently.
