The story
Kojima Productions announced on September 10 that it is expanding its partnership with Xbox for its new next-generation espionage action title, “PHYSINT.” Following “OD,” which is already being co-developed with Xbox, the new title will also team up with Xbox — effectively marking PlayStation’s withdrawal from the collaborative development setup. On 5channel’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, users discussed what happens to independent creators when they lose the backing of a major publisher, how Kojima’s work has been received since “Death Stranding,” and how streaming culture is affecting sales of story-driven games.

What people said
Huge opportunity for Xbox, but not sure they can actually pull it off lol
Their AAA exclusives are nothing but a nuisance
Nintendo only locks down kids' games as exclusives, so it's fine — I just don't buy those
Foreign companies cut their losses fast
I guess they were counting on the Kojima brand, but Death Stranding undershot expectations and the new game's budget is huge, so maybe they cut it loose early
So their read must be that losing it to a rival won't matter for the next-gen console war a year or two from now
Rough
This one's probably not coming out for another 7 years anyway
How old is Kojima now
With Xbox it can reach PC without even needing Steam
Well, I guess it'll end up on Steam anyway, but the real problem is Kojima's games are still just 'look, I'm buddies with Hollywood actors' self-promotion with no substance behind it
Still haven't shown a single second of actual gameplay
Wouldn't be surprising if the project got scrapped
Well, good thing Xbox picked it up
Personally I don't hate the gameplay itself — I actually kind of like it
But the new game is supposed to be this fusion of games and movies, and that sounds like the same direction as Death Stranding — that's a bad sign
His social media's all just photos with celebrities and bragging about shopping
Did it ever come out?
Can't expect much
People who feel satisfied just watching a playthrough are killing sales
Development costs a fortune and streamers spoil the story — story-driven games are doomed
Stuff like racing, shooters, or puzzle games, sure, stream those
It's already too late
Everyone's realized the easiest, most enjoyable way to 'play' now is watching a video at 2x speed and skipping through it
If that's Gang of Dragon, that's five years in with zero output
They've probably only got assets and nothing else
Sounds just like a salaryman craftsman who never realizes he could only do business because of the shop's name behind him, then goes independent thinking 'I can make it anywhere on my own skill' — and flames out
Guess they don't know what kind of support went into making Death Stranding
It's less that they get lazy and more that they get even more motivated — except they pour all that energy into details nobody else cares about
Like 'I want to add this too, I want to redo that too,' and it just pushes completion further away
OD is also being developed together with Microsoft though
What kind of game was Nagoshi trying to make?
Background and key points of this discussion
“PHYSINT” is billed as a “fusion of games and movies,” and as post #22 notes, quite a while has passed since its announcement with no concrete footage revealed yet. This latest announcement formalizes Xbox’s involvement in this new title too, following “OD,” which is already being co-developed with Xbox — meaning PlayStation has stepped back from what had been an exclusive collaborative arrangement. It’s easy to misread this as Sony titles disappearing altogether, which isn’t the case here. On the thread, citing examples like Yuji Naka and Like a Dragon (Yakuza) studio figure Toshihiro Nagoshi, users debated the view that even accomplished creators tend to stall out once they lose the backing of a major publisher, alongside a sharp split in opinion over “Death Stranding.” There was also broader discussion of an industry-wide issue: story-driven games being “consumed” via let’s-plays and streams in a way that doesn’t translate into sales.
