The story

Following the announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 versions of “Persona 4 Reload” and the latest entry “Persona 6,” X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with comments like “Now I don’t have to buy a PS5.” A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board picked up on the reaction, with posters debating whether they could think of any PS5-exclusive games worth owning, and whether the Switch 2 version — arriving later — might actually outsell the PS5 version. Some brought up how the delayed Switch 2 port of “Persona 3 Reload” underperformed, fueling a lively discussion.

Honestly, it's probably too late for most people already
3AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:21
People who said 'I don't have a Switch 2 so I bought a PS5'
I've seen like 50 of them

Re: #3
A console that makes people miserable
that's the real barrier
7AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:26
Since the Switch 2 version of P4R comes later, if there's any new added content, you might end up getting spoiled on it
14AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:39
Re: #7
Persona 4 already got a re-release after Golden, so I don't think many people are actually worried about that kind of thing
15AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:39
Honestly I think it's a console that fits Persona fans pretty well — it's stylish and casual
19AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:44
Re: #15
And yet PlayStation's become the 'broke shut-in living with his parents' console (こどおじ, slang for an unemployed adult man still living at home)…
There used to be a time when it was in basically every household
17AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:43
There are people out there who actually think the Switch 2 version will sell better, but after watching P3R flop, if this one also gets delayed by three months, it's not just going to sell worse than the PS5 version — it's headed straight for a bomb lol
21AnonymousSep 10, 2026 04:52
Re: #17
This time everyone knows from the start it's coming to Switch 2, so really, how much is the PS5 version even going to sell?
77AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:11
Re: #17
That's on Atlus for delaying it, not on the users
95AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:45
Re: #17
Take that up with Atlus by email lol
it's got nothing to do with the customers
24AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:08
Re: #21
Switch 2 is weak with the hardcore gamer crowd, so I think it'll mostly skew toward PS5
26AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:09
Re: #24
What exactly counts as 'for gamers'?
33AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:26
PlayStation's role is over

Even Persona 4 and 6, which people said would 'never come,' are coming now — PlayStation's role just keeps shrinking.
Sure there's stuff like frame rate differences, but how much of that gorgeous fidelity PlayStation keeps chasing do players even want?
Strong first-party IP, good sales, so third parties want Switch releases too — Nintendo really is strong.
No real exclusive IP left, consumers don't care, and whatever used to be good about it is gone — PlayStation's role ends with the PS5. Thanks for your service ✨.

Even if I bought a PS5, there'd be nothing to play

Even if I bought a PS5, there's just way too little to play on it…
Turning it into a dedicated Persona machine felt like too big an expense, so I was really torn, but this saves me.

Re: #35
Exactly this (´・ω・`)
They're not console-war fanboys (ゲハ信者), so it's not that they hate PlayStation
they just don't have games they want to play
I said the same thing to Xbox (箱) over and over: 【Western games basically don't sell in Japan at all — the only way forward is more Japanese games】【Normal people don't care about resolution or fps — what matters is whether it's actually fun to play】

Up until now, Nintendo hardware wasn't powerful enough to run the latest third-party titles, so PlayStation sold itself on that difference — but this is the first generation where the latest titles are going multiplatform, and at this rate PlayStation's really going to get eaten alive by the Switch 2
36AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:31
Can't think of a single game that's PS5-only

It's a relief that Persona 4 is coming to Switch 2.
A lot of titles on PS5 are coming to Switch 2 too, so does PS5 even have much of an edge left?
I really can't think of many titles that are PS5-exclusive.
38AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:34
PS5 has no use left

Hey, now that even Persona is coming to Switch 2, any reason to use a PS5 has completely vanished
39AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:35
PS5 won't get turned on

Persona 6 is coming to Switch 2 too? Seriously — looks like I'm finally never going to turn my PS5 on again
40AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:36
There's plenty more but I can't be bothered, so that's it
barrier's done too
47AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:51
It's the strongest JRPG in Japan right now
In terms of domestic PS5 hardware sales, this recent break from PlayStation exclusivity might be the most painful hit — I think it was pulling a lot of weight
The fact that 6 is confirmed too is rough
There's a rift between Persona 3 fans and 4/5 fans though
53AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:00
Re: #47
Not sure if it's the strongest domestically (sales are mostly global anyway, and it's most popular in China)
but it's definitely a bigger blow than Final Fantasy leaving
97AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:53
Re: #47
Except for Pokémon, that is
55AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:03
More than whether it sells or not, it's that they chipped away at the other side's main third-party lineup (well, third-party lol)
Having a title everyone kept saying 'it'll never come, it'll never come, snub snub' (ハブる, to exclude/ostracize) get knocked down like that is a heavy blow
58AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:07
Re: #55
If it doesn't actually sell well, getting 'chipped away' doesn't matter at all — it just becomes a laughingstock flop instead
You can watch that play out tonight at 10pm with Onimusha lol
56AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:04
Persona 3 was originally an unpopular title that never sold especially well
On top of that, whether a Switch 2 version was even coming stayed unclear for a while after release
This time it's different because everyone already knows in advance it's coming to Switch 2

Also there's a clear divide in fans between 3 and 4/5 — a lot of people got into the series starting with 4
59AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:07
Re: #56
And on top of being a late port that stayed full price, there's no DLC bundled in either
Sales-wise it's no different from Raidou (a famously niche, low-selling Atlus title)
83AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:18
Re: #56
That's just talking without having actually played it (エアプ)
64AnonymousSep 10, 2026 06:28
6's probably going to be a late port too, so don't come crying about spoiler bombs
96AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:50
Re: #64
You're still going on about 'late port'?
The release date for the platform that got announced first isn't even decided yet
There'd be no point announcing it now otherwise
way too dumb
79AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:14
PS5 has better specs than the Switch 2 and is cheaper, yet it gets treated like this lol
82AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:17
Re: #79
Calling a giant phone you can't even carry around 'high spec' doesn't mean much if you're not an idiot, so that's that…
85AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:23
Still, these days the Switch 2 actually costs more than the PS5
89AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:26
Re: #85
The PS4 ran a ton of amazing value deals, but that didn't exactly let it dominate the original Switch
Compared to that, the PS5 is only cheap relatively speaking — it's not actually cheap in absolute terms
88AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:26
The PS5's got that weirdly-shaped design that's a pain to find space for
The PS3 was chunky and kind of gross too, but the PS5's not even in the same league — what were they eating to greenlight a shape like that
91AnonymousSep 10, 2026 07:27
Re: #88
If the PS5 had at least matched PS4-era standards in either size or design — even just one of the two —
honestly I think it would be selling a lot better (talking domestically)

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The Persona series has long had close ties to PlayStation, but the Switch 2 version of the much-discussed “Persona 3 Reload” arrived as a delayed port released well after launch, and reportedly struggled commercially. In the thread, this precedent fueled comments arguing that “delayed ports don’t sell,” countered by others pointing out that “this time multiplatform release was planned from the start, so the situation is different” — opinions were split. It was also noted that, at current domestic prices, the Switch 2 is in some cases more expensive than the PS5, a reversal of the earlier price gap between the PS4 and the original Switch. Some also pointed out that the series lineup was overhauled starting with Persona 3, creating a divide between the fanbases of 3 and of 4/5. Note that some posts in the thread contained remarks mocking individual posters, so those replies have been excluded from this article.
