Switch 2 ‘Ocarina of Time’ Priced at ¥8,980, Sparks Fierce Price Debate on 5ch

The story

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” will be available as a digital download for 8,980 yen (tax included), releasing on November 5, 2026. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, opinions split over whether that price is fair for a remake with roots going back through the N64 and 3DS versions, with posters repeatedly comparing it to Sony-camp title “FF7 Liberation” at 9,980 yen (roughly 30,000 yen for the full trilogy) and to Nintendo’s own new “Yoshi” title at 8,000 yen. The debate split between critics who felt only the graphics had been overhauled while the content stayed the same, and those who praised the smoother controls and rearranged soundtrack — with disagreement even over whether a full playthrough takes about 20 hours or more like 30-40.

It's a remake, so of course it costs this much.
And it doesn't leave the story unfinished either — that's just normal.
3AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:59
Charging 9,000 yen for a mere remake?
That's just pathetic.

Re: #3
FF7 Liberation is ¥9,980, you know? And for PS players who bought it around launch, it's a trilogy, so that's about ¥30,000 total lol.
What do you make of that? On top of that, you can't even play Rebirth without a PS5… What a wild era we live in, huh?
6AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:04
Why does something that's basically just a graphics upgrade cost about 9,000 yen?
The fields are still just as cramped, and you still get load screens entering towns and villages — that doesn't even clear the bare minimum bar.

Re: #6
I bet you haven't even played Ocarina of Time yourself
You really, truly don't understand anything.
38AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:31
Re: #6
Have you actually played Ocarina of Time, or are you just faking it (エアプ, "air-play" — pretending you've played)?
7AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:05
The digital version is $60 in the US, so the physical version is probably $70.
Same price as [Donkey Kong] Bananza and Kirby Air Riders.

Same price as Yoshi, huh.

Re: #9
In the US, physical is $70 and digital is $60 — same price as Zelda.
But in Japan, Yoshi is 8,000 yen physical / 7,000 yen digital, which is 1,000 yen cheaper than Zelda.

Don't really care either way, but huh, so Koei Tecmo made this one.

Re: #11
Lego's name showed up too, so isn't it just there because they tacked on a promo for a Warriors (Musou) game?
13AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:06
A full remake at full price is completely normal, isn't it?
Is it different on PlayStation?
17AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:09
Re: #13
The FF7 Remake that started on PS4 is split into a trilogy, and the final part is finally coming out next year.
18AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:09
Wow, this exceeded my expectations — really good.
I'd love for the FF7 Remake team to hear these BGM arrangements.
19AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:10
Any predictions on how well this is going to sell?
50AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:57
Re: #19
For a remake, this is about right.
Star Fox < Zelda < Air Riders.
Probably around 300k (5ch shorthand for 万, ten-thousands) in the first week.
36AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:28
Honestly it just felt like an even prettier version of the 3DS release.
But for people who only remember the N64 version, it's probably going to blow their minds.
41AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:43
Re: #36
Right?
I just finished the 3DS version recently, so it really did just feel like a graphics bump to me.
Even the combat looked like the same animations.
The music didn't feel like it changed much either.
Hearing the town theme I walked back and forth through a million times made me sigh lol.
Feels like something I'd buy again once I've forgotten all that.
42AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:45
Remake Majora's Mask too, please.
43AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:46
Re: #42
Seems likely it'll come out around the same time next year.
59AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:08
So the playtime is somewhere in the low teens of hours?
67AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:21
Re: #59
If you play normally, poking around and collecting stuff like Heart Pieces, it's probably just under 20 hours.
If you rush through it, it should be over in under 10 hours.
66AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:19
If it were cheap, people would call it a lazy, half-assed remake.
At full price, they call this remake a rip-off.
Cut it out with the unfalsifiable logic.
71AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:26
Re: #66
If the content had actually been thoroughly overhauled, nobody would complain even at full price.
It's this price for content that barely changed — that's the problem.
73AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:27
Re: #71
If that's what you want, go play the FF7 Remake.

The amount of content in that thing is insane.
86AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:05
Re: #71
Play it before you talk.
74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:28
But there are probably more people who got into Zelda starting around Breath of the Wild than people who've actually played Ocarina of Time — so for first-timers, this could be a lot of fun.
76AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:30
Re: #74
Well, Breath of the Wild itself was pretty unusual for a Zelda game.
Up until then, Zelda was all about dungeons as the main focus, with traversal as just an extra.
How you take that difference matters.
If you enjoy solving gimmicks/puzzles and pushing forward through them, this is a no-brainer buy — I think it's genuinely fun.
75AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:29
Re: #73
I don't need that trash split into three parts.
77AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:31
Re: #75
The FF7 Remake is exactly the thing you claim to love — completely overhauled content with a massive amount of playtime.

Just go play the FF7 Remake already.
79AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:34
Twilight Princess isn't in the list of titles at the end of the trailer.
Could this mean something…?
81AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:43
Re: #79
Like it said in the description, that list is just showing Zelda titles currently playable on Switch (2), so it's normal that Twilight Princess isn't there.
84AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:53
Coming from Elden Ring, the Tears of the Kingdom-style item shortcut system builds up little bits of stress — I really wish they'd dropped that.
85AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:55
Re: #84
That's still way more comfortable than Elden Ring, where you have to mash the D-pad to cycle items.
87AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:15
Honestly, I don't think this is going to sell well.
Anyone who's felt that sting with Star Fox knows that even with upgraded graphics, 20 hours of gameplay just isn't enough to leave players satisfied.
89AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:37
Re: #87
Ocarina of Time in 20 hours, lol.
That's definitely someone faking having played it (エアプ, "air-play").
95AnonymousSep 9, 2026 06:18
Re: #89,92
> AI Overview
Completing the story of 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' takes roughly 20 to 30 hours.
98AnonymousSep 9, 2026 06:51
Re: #95
Aaand there it is lol.
"The AI must be right" guy, lol.
Well, that number's probably just copied from walkthrough sites, but still.

The real average is more like 35 hours.
For VTubers and the like, the average is over 40 hours.
Even someone who's good at games and experienced, playing it for the first time, would normally take a good 30 hours, y'know? lol

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Ocarina of Time” is a landmark entry in the Zelda series, originally released on the NINTENDO64 in 1998, and was remade for 3DS in 2011 as “Ocarina of Time 3D.” This new Switch 2 version appears to be built on that 3DS release with an updated graphics overhaul, and opinions on the thread split between those who felt it was “just the 3DS version looking even nicer” and those who argued that “the improved combat feel and rearranged soundtrack don’t come across unless you actually play it yourself.” The FF7 Remake brought up in price comparisons is structured as a trilogy continuing from the PS4 version, with the final installment not yet released — the three games together will run close to 30,000 yen. Without knowing this, it’s easy to misread the simple “FF7 is more/less expensive” comparisons; in reality, this is about the total cost of a split-release strategy, not a straightforward one-to-one price comparison. On playtime too, the estimates from walkthrough sites (roughly 20-30 hours) clashed with the felt playtime depending on how thoroughly one plays (30-40 hours), so the “time versus price” debate kept going with different posters working from different assumptions.
