Was Monster Hunter Rise Bashed Too Much? 5ch: ‘Wilds Was Even Worse’

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (aka “Geha”) board debated whether Monster Hunter Rise deserved the harsh criticism it got at launch. There was general agreement on complaints like thin content volume, no true final boss, and dissatisfaction with the endgame mode Rampage (Hyakuryu Yakou) — but plenty of posters argued the later title Wilds was even worse, and that the Sunbreak expansion turned Rise’s reputation around. Others pushed back, citing the grindy “half-Rise” feel right after launch (a pun on Rise sounding like “raisu,” rice) and the gacha-like Qurious Crafting system, arguing problems lingered even in Sunbreak. The discussion ended up less about judging Rise on its own and more a full comparison across the series.

Compared to Wilds, having thin content was almost cute.
5AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:17
Wilds (not World) was worse though.

Stealing PS players who won't even buy Monster Hunter at launch anyway — that's not exactly a huge number.

And it's not like Nintendo did anything special; FromSoftware is just cozying up to them on its own.

Same thing got said about companies joining Smash Bros — bottom line, everyone just wants that "Nintendo stamp of approval."

Not sure if "volume" is the right word, but since you basically never died, clear time was actually faster in Wilds — including cutscene skips.
8AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:19
Rise getting bashed is fair enough — weapon balance is a mess, and there's no true final boss. I get why Rampage, as the replacement for the old Siege events, is unpopular, but making it the endgame content is the real problem.

Re: #8
Wilds doesn't have a true final boss either, though.
9AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:20
Doesn't Rise basically have zero flaws besides thin content at launch and weaker graphics?

The combat's fun, the characters aren't grating, there's barely any of that cheap "gotcha" padding games use to fake difficulty, and the UI isn't bad either.

Re: #9
There's also that garbage-of-garbage failed tower-defense mode.
11AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:23
You had to sit around twiddling your thumbs for three months of drip-fed updates — that's what made it garbage "half-Rise."
12AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:26
That was about the standard you'd expect from Monster Hunter back then. Wilds just broke it even further.
13AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:26
You can call Rise trash all you want, but Wilds is the only one that got "Mixed" reviews on Steam, had its own main thread implode, and forced weapon-type threads to reset.
14AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:27
I dropped it right away so I wouldn't know, but did Sunbreak actually make things better?
15AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
The moment you have to bring up Wilds to defend it, that says it all.
16AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
Guess the finishing blow was the endless nerfs followed by Akuma (the Street Fighter crossover). They only teased Lagia's right leg and barely added real content — felt like they never intended to let people actually play.
17AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
It's not just Rise — fanboys of whatever platform doesn't get a Monster Hunter release will always bash it relentlessly and obsessively. Conclusion: Geha (console-war board) addicts are just unhinged. 😨
18AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:29
Rise didn't even have a true ending at first, and the thin content was a real complaint. Sunbreak made it way more fun though.
19AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:30
Rampage is a bad mode, and on top of that, locking the real final boss behind a future update is straight-up unfinished-game marketing — of course it got bashed.
20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31
Cutting Rampage entirely for Sunbreak was a bold call. I figured it was Rise's signature feature, so I assumed they'd just refine it and keep it going.
22AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31
Guess this place is full of Wilds fanboys ("Hoiru") too. Feels like World, Rise, and the older titles are the only games left you can actually discuss seriously.
23AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:32
Wirebugs and Palamute mounts (Garuku) were just too good. And now Wilds goes and introduces some watered-down knockoff of Wirebug techniques, way too late.
26AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:35
Re: #23
Both of those are garbage mechanics anyway.
29AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:36
Ascendance now lets you use something like Wirebug techniques, basically turning it into Rise — and the people who kept screaming Rise "isn't real Monster Hunter" have gone dead silent. Lol.
31AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:37
Re: #29
That's just an added action, not an actual Wirebug technique, lol.
36AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:42
4, X, World, Rise, Wilds — every single one gets bashed for its bad parts. Stop pinning it all on fanboys.
48AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:48
Re: #36
Not sure if it was fanboys, but World showing damage numbers on-screen got absolutely torn apart back then, lol.
41AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:46
In both Rise and Sunbreak, having to go pick up those will-o'-the-wisp things (Spiribirds) one by one is a pain. And in multiplayer you feel bad spending too much time collecting them, so you barely get any.
45AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:47
Re: #41
Well, they at least helped you memorize the maps, so you didn't really need to go collect them anyway.
47AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:48
Re: #41
Didn't they add an auto-pickup option for those?
76AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:17
Still, if they'd just stop shipping unfinished games that assume you'll grind to Master Rank, half the backlash would disappear.
103AnonymousSep 5, 2026 20:49
Re: #76
That's Producer Tsujimoto's policy, so it's a tough one to change. Tracing it back, it stems from World's clear rate being way too low — so starting with Rise, the base game got structured that way specifically to push players toward buying the expansion DLC.
77AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:19
Rise got forgiven because Sunbreak actually polished it up properly — not because Wilds flopped. Something like 4G still probably hasn't been forgiven to this day.
80AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:24
Re: #77
Polished up by Sunbreak? There's still no forbidden/taboo monsters, leveling up Qurio rank is just as tedious as ever, broken buff skills wrecked the balance, and the absurd gacha system that is Qurious Crafting left time-attack rankings crawling with cheaters. It was such a bad game it stayed worse than World the whole time.
83AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:28
Isn't a Switch 2 edition coming?
85AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:29
Re: #83
Oh, it's coming — it's called "Wilds." 🥰
88AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:35
With Wilds, the dev side kept provoking players nonstop. For some reason, despite the garbage quality, they picked fights with total overconfidence — of course that blew up.
97AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:57
Re: #88
This is the most decisive part: "ship garbage, then declare victory anyway." I think that's the common thread behind pretty much every major flame-war release lately, not just Wilds. That's exactly where the trust gap with Rise got too wide to close — Wilds kept making the worst possible move in its follow-up damage control.
96AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:51
Back in the 3DS era, even though people trashed the graphics nonstop, alternating base and "G" versions never really gave off a "thin content" impression.

Re: #96
Maybe it was just the times — hardly anyone compared each game to its predecessor back then.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Monster Hunter Rise launched on Switch in 2021 and reached its fully polished form with the major 2022 expansion, Sunbreak. The thread’s main focus is looking back at how fair the harsh criticism at launch really was. The central target of complaints, Rampage (Hyakuryu Yakou), was the replacement for the series’ traditional large-scale Siege events, and the practice of holding the true final boss back for a post-launch update rather than shipping it at launch is a pattern that has repeated across the series, not something unique to Rise. In the thread, many argued Rise looks better in hindsight compared to the later title Wilds, which drew technical complaints despite the developers’ confident, combative public statements. At the same time, some pushed back, pointing to the gacha-like Qurious Crafting system and rampant cheating in time-attack rankings even in Sunbreak, arguing Rise “still hasn’t been forgiven” — leaving the debate without a clean, simple verdict.
