The story
The Switch 2 version of the final chapter in the FF7 Remake trilogy has sparked discussion on the hardware/industry (“gehaban”) board, after users pointed out that with only 256GB of internal storage, players will need to buy an additional “microSD Express” card — a special format that regular microSD cards can’t be used with — just to fit the game. The first two entries, Remake and Rebirth, already total around 90GB combined, and the finale alone is said to take up another roughly 130GB, meaning keeping all three installed at once could cost anywhere from a few thousand yen to nearly 30,000 yen just in SD cards. Some pushed back in the thread with comments like “just delete it after you beat it” and “the PS5 version eats up just as much space,” so opinions were split on how big a problem this really is.
What people said
256GB is about ¥9,000
512GB is about ¥29,000
It'll fit on the internal storage, won't it?
That'd be unthinkable for a modern gadget, but…
the internal storage is only 256GB
Is it really that short on space?
Seems plenty to me
256GB is a totally normal size even for smartphones these days — how is that "unthinkable"?
In this case Switch 2 is the biggest trash of all, so it's not even an option
let us use the regular SD cards like before
SD Express isn't some proprietary format at all
and Liberation (the finale) is 130GB
so unless you buy an SD card you can't fit all three lolol
I'm not buying such a trash game so it's not a problem for me
even Cyberpunk 2077 is only about 50GB
I delete it after I clear it, there's no way I'd keep all three installed at once
Same goes for PS5 — the PS5 version takes up even more space anyway
Both Remake and Rebirth already flopped hard on Switch 2
Well yeah
At this point only middle-aged guys from the PlayStation-mainstream generation are buying an FF remake
Trash Switch can't even keep up with the performance of the newest games — it's getting even already-announced multiplatform releases cancelled lol
Who actually keeps it installed when it's almost 100GB?
Crappy graphics, barren content, 30fps probably? lmaoooo
Wonder how much dev money Nintendo's paying for that one lol
Elden Ring flopped hard
and Dusk Blood's already guaranteed to flop too, that's hilarious lol
Already by Rebirth on PS5 a ton of Remake's original audience had dropped off
If anything, now that it's complete, this looks like an amazing, massive game you can play start to finish for the price of about one title
Well, on Switch 2 you can only play through it by deleting stuff along the way though 😂
I mean, that's kind of a lot to say about a game from about 7 years ago
Switch 2's performance is basically on par with hardware from 10 years ago, so if anything this counts as a cutting-edge title for it
Honestly, I can only think Square Enix is being dumb here
This isn't the kind of game bought by people who only buy Nintendo hardware lol
They're probably that desperate
since that "barrier" crowd doesn't buy games anyway
Well, I'll just be buying it on Switch 2 as normal though
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, and expansion is only supported through a dedicated microSD Express slot — the regular microSD cards used on previous Switch consoles won’t fit. SD Express itself is an industry-standard format set by the SD Association, not a proprietary Nintendo format, but compatible products are still low in supply and tend to carry a higher price tag. The prices cited in the thread — “around ¥9,000 for 256GB, around ¥29,000 for 512GB” — are rough real-world figures cited by thread participants, not an official guaranteed lowest price, so that should be kept in mind. There was also pushback along the lines of “just delete it after you finish it,” but that argument doesn’t really hold for users who want to play multiple titles in parallel, or who might want to go back and replay them later.
