My Wig Debut Went Totally Unnoticed — 5chers: “The People You See Every Day HAVE Noticed”

A poster who started wearing a wig after a job transfer got a reaction from 5ch’s realtime-thread crowd. Their report that “seriously, nobody’s noticed” drew a string of insights only fellow wig-wearers would know, like “the people you see every day have noticed — they call you ‘Toupee’ behind your back” and “the trick is not making the hair volume look unnaturally thick.” The conversation broadened into hair loss in general, touching on finasteride’s side effects and the rise of thinning hair among young women.

Seems like nobody's noticed at all

No, seriously, nobody's noticed

People who see you every day have noticed. They're treating you like a bomb that might go off. Behind your back your nickname is "Toupee"

>>23
Why would just wearing a wig get you treated like a bomb that might go off?
63Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:49:46.08ID:hPHojCvB0
>>52
Probably because the list of banned words around that person keeps growing — things like "slip," "fall out," that kind of thing

It's the delicate nature of wearing a wig in the first place. People start thinking "this guy must be sensitive about it," so even when joking around they have to watch their word choice
12Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:39:00.43ID:uX2XN5GF0
Of course people notice when a bald guy's hair suddenly grows back
37Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:43:34.21ID:6TD32SBU0

No, I debuted the wig right when I transferred to a new workplace, so seriously, nobody's noticed
16Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:39:34.63ID:6TD32SBU0
Oh, one more blind spot people miss — if you're planning to debut a wig, go to the barber and have them thin out the wig's hair.
The reason wigs get spotted is that the hair volume looks unnaturally thick for your age.
It's important to buy the wig and then get it cut to look like natural thinning hair
19Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:40:18.66ID:zqCcipLD0
>>16
If you're going to bother making it look like thinning hair anyway, just go bald for real
106Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:01:34.22ID:fd8t1GcN0
>>16
Take off the "thinning hair" wig and actual baldness pops out underneath — it's like a matryoshka doll
26Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:41:26.88ID:6TD32SBU0
>>19
Well, it'd look weird if a bald guy's hair volume suddenly shot up, so it can't be helped
115Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:05:23.39ID:BX4oO1rC0
>>26
Okay, now I'm completely lost

You can tell right away from the feel of the hair, the volume, the unnatural hairline, and the part
42Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:45:13.39ID:6TD32SBU0
>>40
Nobody stares that intently at someone else's hair though
44Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:45:18.94ID:zcRJ1+Em0
But for guys like Kazunari Ishida who built their career on good looks, it'd hurt business if it weren't a toupee — not that it's got anything to do with OP

That's a real hair transplant he got done in Russia
46Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:45:51.71ID:1FYhosDB0
I've got a full head of hair, but I shave it down to skin and wear a full wig over it.
Once you go skin-bald, there's no going back
51Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:47:03.98ID:zqCcipLD0
>>46
I've been thinking about doing that myself for ages.
I want to be upfront that I'm bald underneath and just enjoy wearing wigs for fun.
Styling my actual hair every day is such a hassle

I can't help it, my eyes just go straight to wigs.
Sorry, I just can't look away
124Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:08:08.55ID:tAPZGtja0
>>57
That's because you're bald yourself lol.
Normally people don't pay that much attention to other people's hair
61Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:49:26.27ID:rtP+k/980
My favorite girl at the massage parlor was worrying about going bald too — guess women go bald as well
67Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:50:15.79ID:zqCcipLD0
>>61
There are a ton of women out there with thinning hair wearing wigs
68Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:50:20.27ID:rtP+k/980
It gets tense when someone wearing a wig walks right up to you
70Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:50:49.03ID:75YMD5Xs0
>>68
Same. You end up feeling like you have to make extra sure you don't let on that you noticed
69Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:50:31.33ID:Ja+QbKq/0
A wig's fine, but if you can actually improve things with medication or a transplant, that's a solid option too
75Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:51:23.45ID:rtP+k/980
>>69
Though apparently finasteride causes impotence, and minoxidil apparently causes heart problems
72Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:51:06.09ID:6TD32SBU0
>>63
Honestly I don't worry about words like that at all lol
84Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:54:20.95ID:TgsTXshj0

Foreman: "Let's have another safe, upbeat day today!"
OP: "That's harassment!!!"
98Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:58:06.87ID:hPHojCvB0
>>72
The person wearing it might not even care, but the people around them get nervous wondering if it'll come across as harassment
89Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:55:02.87ID:6TD32SBU0
By the way, when I first started wearing the wig I wasn't used to how tight it was, and I seriously had brutal headaches every single day.
Just a heads-up for you guys on that one — though it might vary by person
93Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:55:57.17ID:rtP+k/980
>>89
You're gonna end up with a nervous breakdown at this rate
94Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 09:56:06.56ID:75YMD5Xs0
>>89
Why not just take it off and go skinhead?
Is there some reason that's inconvenient for you?
123Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:07:33.60ID:o9vDzZG/0
You guys are laughing at bald people, but don't forget your own hair count keeps dropping a little more every single day — you're all steadily marching toward baldness too
132Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:10:53.58ID:5L4Pgx6T0
>>123
Barring illness, you can generally tell whether you're headed for baldness
139Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:12:30.51ID:BscR+nQ40
>>123
I have my wife check my scalp for me.
Even if my crown turns out to be thinning, that's just proof of her love
133Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:11:06.61ID:S3wCVxCC0
Isn't young women's thinning hair actually worse than middle-aged men's these days?
Compared to the past, thinning at the crown is way more noticeable on young women now.
I seriously think that every time I'm on the train
135Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:11:40.72ID:ImHh3KrX0
>>133
Yeah, I think that too.
Maybe it's some kind of nutritional deficiency
137Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:12:06.14ID:CPktaI8o0
>>133
Apparently it just came out that Mounjaro (the weight-loss drug) makes thinning hair more likely
145Anonymous2026/08/23(日) 10:13:41.42ID:PtmcH0tF0
>>133
Ah, yeah, Gen Z does seem to have thinner hair somehow.
Also feels like a lot of women these days have greasy-looking hair
