  • Single-Story Homes Now 19.6% of New Houses Nationwide — Miyazaki Leads at 63%, Tokyo Lowest at 1.9%

According to a survey by the housing information site SUUMO, the share of single-story houses among newly built wooden detached homes rose from 8.1% in 2015 to 19.6% in 2025. The rate was especially high in Kyushu and the Chugoku-Shikoku region, led by Miyazaki (63.4%), Kagoshima (59.5%), Kagawa (52.9%), and Kumamoto (37.4%), while Tokyo ranked lowest at 1.9%. The trend appears to be driven partly by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake and the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, as well as the convenience of single-story living in old age. On 5ch, opinions were divided over cost and design, with comments like “only the rich can afford this where land is expensive,” “no stairs makes things easier as you get older,” and “more and more of these houses have hardly any windows.”

Single-story houses, which are less prone to shaking in earthquakes and easier to evacuate, are drawing attention. According to a survey by Recruit’s housing information site “SUUMO,” the nationwide average share of single-story homes among newly built wooden detached houses rose from 8.1% in 2015 to 19.6% in 2025. The share is especially high in Kyushu, and may rise further following the July Kumamoto earthquake, which registered a maximum intensity of 7. The convenience of single-story living in old age also appears to be a contributing factor.

Kumamoto’s rate rose from 25.3% in 2015 to 37.4% in 2025, a trend said to have accelerated after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The prefectures that reached 50% or higher in 2025 were Miyazaki (63.4%), Kagoshima (59.5%), and Kagawa (52.9%). Tokyo ranked lowest at 1.9%, with Kanagawa (3.9%) and Osaka (4.2%) also in the single digits.

The biggest increase since 2015 was in Ishikawa, where the rate grew roughly eightfold to 32.0%. Besides the effects of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, ease of snow removal also appears to be a factor.

In Tokyo, the most you could realistically downgrade is from 3 stories to 2.
A single-story house is impossible unless you're seriously rich.

    Re: #6
In terms of safety, a 3-story house is probably the safer bet, since the Building Standards Act requires an allowable stress calculation for those.

Anything 2 stories or under can be thrown together by whatever local contractor or carpenter, which is exactly why people say a single-story house is the better option among the "easy" ones.

Even in safe-looking areas, you could just raise the foundation by about 50cm.
You do see houses built that way in spots that feel risky.
I figure areas with a lot of raised houses like that are the ones prone to flooding.

Local governments also publish two kinds of hazard maps — the regular one and one for internal (stormwater) flooding — so ideally you'd find an area that's safe on both,
but there aren't many places like that.

Building a single-story house with Ichijo Komuten for around 15 million yen (base price) is quite doable if you go with one of their standardized models like "HUGme" or "i-smile."

Setting aside the "only rich people can afford it" debate, you just can't build for 10 million these days.
Even a single-story house with a 20-tsubo footprint would definitely run past 20 million with Ichijo.
Three years ago you might've shaved maybe 3 million off that, but even then, 10 million was never realistic for an Ichijo-tier builder.

Reinforced concrete is the standard in Okinawa, huh.

The reason reinforced concrete (RC) construction is so common for Okinawan houses comes down largely to the harsh natural environment — typhoons, salt damage, and termites — along with historical factors from the postwar period.
It's said that about 90% of homes there are built with concrete.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This survey, conducted by Recruit-operated SUUMO, tallies the share of single-story houses among newly built wooden detached homes by prefecture. The backdrop includes the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake and the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake — indeed, Kumamoto’s rate climbed from 25.3% in 2015 to 37.4% in 2025, while Ishikawa’s grew roughly eightfold. That said, it’s worth noting that “single-story means earthquake-resistant” isn’t strictly accurate: these houses merely tend to resist shaking better thanks to their low center of gravity and simple structure, while actual seismic resistance still comes down to design and construction quality. As pointed out in the thread, the Building Standards Act actually mandates structural calculations (allowable stress calculations) for buildings of three stories or more, meaning two-story buildings and under can sometimes get by with simpler inspections. The popularity of single-story houses isn’t just about earthquake preparedness, either — it also reflects the rise of single- and small-person households and the ease of mobility in old age, alongside the very real constraint that single-story homes are simply impractical in cities where land is expensive. The bottom-ranked areas, Tokyo (1.9%) and Kanagawa (3.9%), reflect exactly this land-cost reality.

  • Overseas Fans Have Never Heard of ‘Ninku’ — 5ch: “You Should at Least Know What Inspired Naruto”

Following the announcement of a new Naruto collaboration anime aimed at overseas audiences, 5ch highlighted reactions showing that many international fans have never heard of “Ninku,” a ninja manga serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump during the 1990s. In the thread, some argued that Ninku’s anime staff became the foundation for Naruto’s production team, while others pointed out that the series was never a major hit even in Japan — sparking discussion over the gap between its reputation at home and its near-total obscurity abroad.

Lol, that's just because Nishio himself is amazing

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Ninku” was a ninja manga serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump during the 1990s, and the thread discusses the claim that staff from its anime adaptation later went on to work on NARUTO. However, the series’ name recognition was always limited even in Japan due to its short run, and the thread itself was split — some said “it wasn’t even that popular in Japan,” while others insisted “at least the visuals should look familiar” — so there’s no real consensus. Since overseas anime awareness depends heavily on how far official streaming and translations have reached, it’s not unusual for a work considered a domestic “source of inspiration” to have a very different level of recognition abroad. It should be noted that these are simply impressions from 5ch users, not primary-source verification of Ninku’s staff connections or its actual popularity.

A ring design produced by M!LK’s Juutaro Yamanaka has come under fire on social media for allegedly resembling a product from an established jewelry brand, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Commenters were split on how seriously to take the resemblance, with one popular comparison likening it to “Frank Muller and Frank Miura” — a reference to a famous Japanese parody watch brand whose name and look mimic Frank Muller’s but which was ruled legally distinct. Some defended the ring on the grounds that it costs roughly 1/50th of the original, while others noted the backlash was worse precisely because Yamanaka himself is known to love high-end jewelry brands.

Frank Miura was ruled not guilty because it was different enough!!

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The name “Frank Miura” keeps coming up because of a famous 2016 precedent: watchmaker Frank Muller sued the parody brand “Frank Miura” for trademark infringement, fought it all the way to Japan’s Supreme Court, and lost. That case established that a similar-looking product isn’t legally problematic as long as it’s “different enough that no one would mistake it for the real thing.” Drawing on that precedent, the thread saw parallel arguments: some defended the ring as falling within that same gray area, while others countered that costing 1/50th of the original doesn’t excuse reusing someone else’s design. The real point of contention is where to draw the line on calling mass-produced, fan-merchandise-style jewelry a “rip-off” — no legal conclusion has actually been reached here. The claim that Yamanaka favors high-end jewelry brands comes from posters in the thread, and whether the design similarity was intentional copying has not been confirmed, including any comment from his talent agency, as of this thread.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “M!LK’s Juutaro Yamanaka Under Fire for Allegedly Copying Another Brand’s Design for His Produced Ring“.

  • Kari Miyamoto: “My Hello! Project Days Weren’t ‘Youth’ or a ‘Club Activity’” — 5ch Reacts: “She’s a Pro Who Gets Paid in Ticket Money”

Former Angerme member Kari Miyamoto’s comments about her Hello! Project years being called “youth” or a “club activity” have been picked up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread cites a remark she made answering a fan letter, to the effect of: “Looking back now, I guess you could call it ‘youth,’ but while I was in the middle of it, it was just my whole life.” Her view that, since fans pay ticket prices to watch her perform, she should carry herself with a professional’s self-awareness, sparked mixed reactions. Many posts also recalled the grueling tour schedules and health issues from that era, with the discussion spreading from debates about “youth” to comparisons of how many shows current members perform.

The only ones who never missed a single show during that hellish 225-date national tour were Miyamoto and Takagi.
(They made it all the way to the Budokan while also doing release events, meet-and-greets, and drama shoots on top of it.)
Miyamoto later had a long absence due to functional dysphonia, then Bell's palsy, then a vocal cord polyp — one illness after another.
    28AnonymousOct 11, 2026 13:46
Michishige and Danbara set clear goals and used them to unite the group, but during Miyamoto's era, once the Budokan show was over, there wasn't really a goal left anymore.
Things like "I want to perform here" or "I want to be on this show" — they'd given up on from the start and never even aimed for them.

So that goofy direction ended up going to BEYOOOOONDS instead."

    Background and Points of Debate

During her days in the former S/mileage and Angerme, Kari Miyamoto ran through a grueling 225-date national tour without missing a single show on the way to the Budokan, and afterward publicly disclosed having functional dysphonia, Bell’s palsy, and a vocal cord polyp. The remark cited in the thread is presented as coming from someone who lived through that punishing schedule firsthand, choosing to keep some distance from framing it as “youth” or a “club activity,” and instead speaking about the self-awareness required by a job where fans pay ticket money to watch her perform. That said, what’s quoted in the thread is only a fragment of the remark, and the full context of the original interview can’t be confirmed. The debate split between those who embrace the nostalgic “youth” framing and those who point to the number of shows current groups (such as Angerme or Juice=Juice) perform to argue “it’s easier now” — a comparison that drifts into a separate argument among Hello! Project fans about workload, distinct from what Miyamoto herself actually said, which readers can easily conflate with her original point.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Good News] Kari Miyamoto: “I don’t want to call my Hello! Project years ‘youth’ or a ‘club activity’ — I’m a pro who gets paid ticket money by fans to put on a show”“.

  • Voice Actress Idol Unit “i☆Ris” Announces Breakup — 5ch: “Getting to Hold a Proper Farewell Live Is a Blessing”

Voice actress idol unit “i☆Ris” announced on its official website that it will end its activities at the end of 2027. The group says the decision comes at a milestone — their 15th anniversary since forming. On 5ch, discussion centered on how well-known each individual member is as a voice actress. While the names Serizawa Yuu and Kubota Mimu came up, many commenters said they’d never heard of the group itself or its other members, highlighting a gap between the unit’s overall recognition and its members’ individual accomplishments. Still, some praised the amicable nature of the wind-down, saying “being able to properly hold a farewell live is a happy thing.”

    Background and Key Points

i☆Ris is an idol unit whose members are all voice actresses, and the announcement was that it will end its activities at the end of 2027, coinciding with its 15th anniversary since forming. Worth noting: the official announcement used the phrase “ending activities” rather than “disbanding” — activities won’t stop immediately, but will continue through the end of 2027. Where opinion in the thread split was over the gap between the group’s name recognition and that of its individual members. While names like Serizawa Yuu and Kubota Mimu — voice actresses widely known from anime and game roles — came up, many replies said they didn’t recognize the unit itself or its other members, highlighting a structure unique to voice-actress units: individual work tends to become known first, with the group name catching up later. There were also voices praising the amicable conclusion of a group that had kept going for so long, with some reactions favorably framing it as a natural turning point at a milestone anniversary, even in a topic where the word “breakup” tends to dominate.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geisoku Hayabusa+) thread “Voice actress idol unit “i☆Ris” announces shock end to activities, finishing at the end of ’27: “a decision made at the milestone of our 15th anniversary”.”

On October 11, at Tokyo Dome, a live-commentary thread followed the Giants vs. DeNA Climax Series game. The starters were Takemaru for the Giants and Ishida Yuma for DeNA, and as the game unfolded with the Giants trailing, Dalbec hit a solo home run to pull one run back. The thread briefly lit up with excitement, but frustration soon took over as fans vented about the lineup’s inability to get leadoff hitters on base and about the batting order, with some recalling past struggles against the Tigers and DeNA. Back in the day it was the Tigers (lol) and the "Miso" (a mocking nickname for the Chunichi Dragons).

    Background and Key Points

The Climax Series (CS) format grants win advantages based on regular-season standings, and the thread included some grumbling about the format itself. The Giants battled the Tigers for the pennant all season, only to keep dropping games to DeNA down the stretch, and the thread was full of fans looking back on that history. Criticism of the batting order came up repeatedly, but language amounting to personal attacks on specific players or staff, along with sexual jokes, has been left out of this article. The sighting of a famous comedian caught on camera during the CS broadcast was another topic that got the thread buzzing.

  • 5ch Users Organize Impromptu Drinking Meetup at Ueno Station — “If You Don’t Enjoy Eating and Drinking Together, I Don’t Get You”

A thread titled “1pm Ueno Drinking Meetup” popped up on 5ch’s News VIP board, with the original poster calling for people to gather at the Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket counter by Ueno Station’s central gates. 5ch has long had a culture of “offline meetups” (offkai), where strangers who only know each other from anonymous posts end up meeting in person, and this was just the latest one. At first, most comments were skeptical — wondering whether anyone would actually show up — but as time passed, more people joined in, and talk turned to booking a yakiniku restaurant or the Torikizoku outlet near Ueno-Hirokoji. The thread saw back-and-forth over how much to budget, exactly where to meet, and which restaurant to pick, and it eventually wrapped up with photos showing how the meetup actually went.

    More people showed up.

Background and key points of this story

5ch has long had a culture of “offline meetups” (offkai), where anonymous posts spark real-life get-togethers between people who’ve never met. The News VIP board is one of the hubs where this originated, and this thread was no exception — it began when the original poster (known as “1”) called for people to gather at the Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket counter by Ueno Station’s central gates. Two main points of contention emerged in the thread. The first was uncertainty over whether anyone would actually show up: against a group of fence-sitters saying they’d “come once enough people gather,” the OP pushed back, pointing out that “if everyone thinks that way, nobody ever will.” The second was cost — when participants asked about budget, the going estimate landed around 5,000 yen per person. One thing readers might easily misunderstand: this wasn’t an event organized by any company or restaurant — it was a private gathering arranged informally by a single poster on an anonymous message board. The meeting spot and restaurant names mentioned reflect what was said at the time of posting and may have changed depending on how the day actually played out.

  • Haruna Kawaguchi’s New Film Crosses ¥1 Billion at the Box Office — 5ch: “Tearjerkers Always Hit”

It was announced on the 11th that the film *Even If Mom Is No Longer in This World: My Diary of Life*, starring Haruna Kawaguchi, topped ¥1 billion at the box office just nine days after release. The source material is a true-life memoir by Nodoka Endo, who was profiled in a segment of the variety show *100 Million People’s Big Question!? Warattekoraete!*; her record of holding onto her love for her husband and child while battling Stage IV colorectal cancer struck a chord with audiences nationwide. On 5ch, the thread ranged from criticism of the promotional line “sobbed so hard I was gasping for air,” to comparisons with the box office of similar true-story “tearjerker” films like *Bride with One Month to Live*, to the budget realities pushing Japanese cinema toward TV-drama-style productions, to comparisons with other young actresses’ standing.

It was announced on the 11th that the film *Even If Mom Is No Longer in This World: My Diary of Life*, starring actress Haruna Kawaguchi, topped ¥1 billion at the box office just nine days after its release (October 2).

The film adapts the bestselling memoir (published by Shogakukan) written by Nodoka Endo, whose story — followed in the “Wedding Trip” segment of the Nippon TV variety show *100 Million People’s Big Question!? Warattekoraete!* — moved the whole country to tears as a “true story that won’t stop the tears.” Set in 2018, in Aomori: Nodoka, then 21, was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer. Even so, what she refused to let go of was her love for her husband, Shoichi, and for the child she was about to bring into the world…

Big entertainment blockbusters need huge sets and action sequences, and that costs money.
Unless you've got a budget on the scale of Hollywood — more than 10 times what Japanese films get — it ends up looking cheap.
That kind of spectacle gets handled in anime instead, where you can just draw it, while live-action Japanese films settle for human drama.

    "Kirin ga Kuru" and "Chimudondon"

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The film’s source material is a memoir by Nodoka Endo, who was followed for a segment of the Nippon TV program *100 Million People’s Big Question!? Warattekoraete!*; it’s based on the true story of her recording her love for her husband and child after being diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer at age 21. True-story “tearjerker” films cited in the thread, like *Bride with One Month to Live* (¥3.15 billion gross) and *10 Years of Life Left* (about ¥2.87 billion), tend to perform well at the box office, and this film’s billion-yen milestone falls in that same lineage. The thread’s real fault line wasn’t over the film’s quality itself, but between discomfort with the “it’ll make you cry” marketing angle and appreciation for it as a record based on a true story. It’s also easy to miss that the headline phrase “sobbed so hard I was gasping for air” is a quote from the distributor’s own promotional comment, not a statement about the film’s actual quality.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Haruna Kawaguchi’s Film “Even If Mom Is No Longer in This World” Tops ¥1 Billion at Box Office — Voices Saying “Sobbed So Hard I Was Gasping for Air for the First Time in a While”.”

Losing the headliner from Fuji TV's flagship show's festival really hurts

Background and key points of this topic

“STAR Fes” was the first major live event spun off from Fuji TV’s music special “STAR,” held October 10–11 at Pia Arena MM in Kanagawa. The fact that his real name, “Seiya Ishikawa,” was officially stated in the cancellation announcement is a rare case — a comedian whose real identity is usually known only by his stage name being revealed through an official statement — and that’s part of why the thread reacted so strongly to the real name. Within the thread, guesses about the cause of his illness ranged from seasonal infections like flu and COVID-19 to menopause-like symptoms and stress, but all of these are purely personal speculation from thread posters — neither Seiya himself nor his agency has disclosed any diagnosis. It’s also been reported that he left a live radio broadcast early the day before due to feeling unwell, and many are treating this festival absence as an extension of that. What readers should be careful not to misunderstand is that all the guesses about his illness in the thread are unconfirmed speculation, not officially confirmed information.

  • 11 Dorm Students at Joetsu High School Posed as Women Online to Scam Men — 21 Also Caught Drinking and Smoking in Dorm

It has come to light that 11 students living in the dormitory of Joetsu High School, a private school in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, posed as women on social media to scam money out of ordinary men. The amounts taken reportedly ranged from 800 yen to over 100,000 yen, and the number of students believed to be involved is said to exceed 30. Alongside this case, the school also became aware that 21 students had been repeatedly drinking and smoking inside the dorm, and held an all-school assembly on September 24 to warn students about the issue. The dorm is said to be used mainly by soccer team students who enrolled from outside the prefecture, and on 5ch, a wide range of opinions were exchanged covering the school’s hensachi (academic difficulty rating), the realities of college-prep schools in rural areas, and how minors should be disciplined.

It was learned on the 9th that students living in the dormitory of Joetsu High School, a private school in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, had committed fraud by posing as women on social networking sites to scam money out of people. It also emerged that students had repeatedly been drinking and smoking inside the dorm, with the number of students believed to be involved reportedly exceeding 30.

According to the school, the dorm is mainly used by soccer team students who came from outside the prefecture to enroll. Eleven of the dorm students allegedly posed as women on social media to exchange messages with men, and some of them reportedly scammed amounts ranging from 800 yen to over 100,000 yen out of their targets.

After becoming aware of the matter, the school contacted the police and also reported it to the prefecture’s university and private school promotion division. It reportedly held an all-school assembly on September 24 to warn students, and notified parents of the matter by email on the 5th of this month.

Japan needs to actually build a system that lets people rehabilitate.
Otherwise they end up with no job prospects — best case, welfare.
Worst case, they keep racking up victims and land in prison (which costs about 6 million yen per inmate per year).
And then we just end up importing foreign workers to do the working and tax-paying instead.

Ah, I see — so it's basically a catch-all for kids like that.
And on top of that they're all packed into a dorm together… nothing good was ever going to come of this.

Rural private schools are often just places that scoop up kids who couldn't get into public school and lock them in a dorm cage.

People keep going on about hensachi, but a senior from my alma mater — a school with a hensachi in the 50s — got into Todai's Medicine track (Science III) straight out of high school.
Rural hensachi numbers especially aren't reliable.
    114AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:06
    Re: #107
In truly rural areas, it's less about hensachi and more about whether you can actually commute there — so a high school's hensachi isn't a reliable measure.
You can only pick from schools within commuting range, which is exactly why dorms exist in the first place.
Even in Tokyo, if you're out on the remote islands or in Okutama, your high school options are limited and you just go with what's available.
    123AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:10
    Re: #107
Your alma mater isn't getting 10 kids into Todai every year from a single school.
Kids who work hard and take things seriously exist everywhere in Japan.
If most of your school's grads got into national universities, your point would mean something, but it doesn't sound like that's the case.
    133AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:18
    Re: #107
Before "F-rank" universities multiplied everywhere, Niigata Prefecture had the lowest university enrollment rate in Japan every year except for Okinawa.

Niigata's high school hensachi numbers aren't reliable.
A hensachi of 50 in an education-focused prefecture would feel more like 65 by Niigata standards.
    150AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:25
If it's a high school, they should just go ahead and expel offenders like this one after another.
    172AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:38
    Re: #150
If it's private, they should be able to push kids toward expulsion once they commit a crime.
Seems like an unusual school culture.
    151AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:25
At this point, any private university or high school with a hensachi under 45 should just have its operating license revoked.
That would also help with the declining-birthrate, under-enrollment problem.
You could shrink the number of schools a little each year — pretty rational.
    157AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:32
    Re: #151
    I like it.
They should cut a big chunk all at once.
That frees up tax money for other things.
If possible, I think it's better to spend tax money on poor kids who are academically and ethically solid and take things seriously.
The bad apples really don't appreciate anything.
    169AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:36
On boarding high schools — from what I've seen around me:
Some families have both parents posted overseas for work, and leaving a kid home alone felt too risky, so they picked a school with a dorm.

Then there are kids with strained family situations — kids who are fine themselves, but due to complicated family circumstances basically get politely pushed out of the house. It's not always about bad behavior — that's what I've seen in my own circle.

And then there are kids recruited nationally for sports — that happens too, but there are quite a few scandals from that group as well.

    Re: #169
I think there are plenty of private college-prep schools with dorms too.
I know a kid who hated the dorm so much they commute two hours each way to a school in the next prefecture, doing homework on the train.
They'd probably rather be reading manga.
    179AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:41
People keep bringing up hensachi, but plenty of kids like this exist even at college-prep schools.
    203AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:51
    Re: #179
When would kids who are constantly committing crimes like these guys even have time to study?
That's different from kids who just don't go to school at all.
At college-prep schools, some kids study hard AND go to cram school or prep school on top of that — there are exams waiting for them outside of school too.
Kids who can't afford that buy recommended reference books or borrow them from the library and study at home.
Even at prep schools, there are kids who win regional or national tournaments with their clubs.
It's not just speech contests or national shogi tournaments either — some kids compete in national sports tournaments or even international competitions.
These kids genuinely barely have time to goof off.
Sure, these days you can read manga on your phone, but…

What I'm saying is the ratios here are just way too different between these groups.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This case calls for some care, since it actually bundles together two problems of very different scale being reported at the same time: 11 dorm students who committed “catfishing fraud” by posing as women on social media, and 21 students who repeatedly drank and smoked inside the dorm. The total number of students suspected of involvement is said to exceed 30, but that doesn’t mean all of them took part in the fraud. Juvenile cases in Japan are normally handled as family-court matters rather than ordinary criminal prosecutions, so it isn’t unusual, procedurally speaking, that no one was arrested immediately after the case came to light. On the thread, opinions split over the structure of rural private high schools using dorms to house athletes recruited from outside the prefecture, and over how much weight to put on school hensachi rankings — though some posts drifted off-topic into sweeping generalizations about Niigata residents as a whole. With the school not yet having disclosed whether victims have filed police reports or what prevention measures it plans to take, the full scope of the case and how students will ultimately be disciplined remain unclear.
