  • Foreign Driver Hiring Expands — 5ch Says: ‘It’s Not a Labor Shortage, It’s a Wage Shortage’

As labor shortages worsen under the “2024 Problem” — new overtime caps on truck drivers — the logistics industry is expanding its hiring of foreign drivers now that trucking has been added to the “Specified Skilled Worker (Type 1)” visa category. In a 5ch thread reacting to a Yomiuri Shimbun article, commenters lined up to criticize the industry’s long-neglected low-wage structure and point out the shortage of long-haul drivers. Opinions were split, meanwhile, over how far self-driving technology could eventually fill the gap.

    Yomiuri Shimbun Online

The logistics industry is increasingly hiring foreign drivers, spurred by the addition of trucking to the “Specified Skilled Worker (Type 1)” visa category. The move is expected to help ease the worsening labor shortage since stricter overtime regulations for truck drivers took effect under the so-called “2024 Problem,” though building the safety infrastructure needed to support it remains a challenge. They spent years screening Japanese applicants out over age and lack of experience — which is exactly how they created this labor shortage in the first place — and now they're gratefully hiring inexperienced foreigners over 40. You'd think it's because it's cheap, but apparently they're paying more than they ever paid non-regular workers from Japan's "employment ice age" generation (those who graduated into the long 1990s–2000s recession and got stuck in precarious jobs).

Raising wages that much would hurt the business.
Foreign workers show up before wages ever climb high enough to attract Japanese workers.
    So companies hire the foreigners.
    Japanese workers can't get in.
More Japanese people end up resenting foreigners.

Basically, every time a job becomes one foreigners can fill, there's less room left for Japanese workers — and all that builds up is hatred toward foreigners.

Self-driving for highways only would be easy enough to make practical, but the question is where you hand off to a human driver. There are only so many spots where you can park a massive truck, and even now, parking areas at night are already packed solid with trucks with nowhere left to go.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The backdrop here includes the “2024 Problem” — new caps on truck drivers’ overtime hours — and the regulatory change adding the trucking industry to the “Specified Skilled Worker (Type 1)” visa category. Opinions in the thread split between blaming low wages for the labor shortage and arguing that even higher wages wouldn’t fix the sheer shortfall in numbers. Several commenters specifically pointed to a shortage of long-haul drivers. The possibility of self-driving technology replacing drivers also came up, but most comments focused on the hurdles still standing in the way of practical use — such as navigating city streets beyond the highway and handling loading and unloading — so the discussion never trended toward optimism. Note that because expanding the acceptance of foreign workers touches on debates over national policy design, comments expressing support for or opposition to specific political parties or policy platforms have been excluded from this article.

  • Peru mayoral race winner’s name: “Hitler Mussolini”

In a mayoral election in the Quero Palca district of Huánuco region, central Peru, a candidate named Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores won the seat. He took 229 votes (34.54%) in a tight race, finishing just 25 votes ahead of the runner-up. He had previously belonged to Keiko Fujimori’s right-wing party before leaving it in 2025 to run for the left-wing party Ahora Nación. On 5ch, the thread lit up over the fact that Japan is missing from this “Axis powers” lineup, the South American custom of naming children after historical figures, and the fact that more than 500 people in Peru are reportedly named after Dragon Ball characters.

According to Infobae on the 9th (1), left-wing candidate Hitler (locally pronounced “Hitler”) Mussolini Simeón Flores has been declared the winner of the mayoral election in the Quero Palca district of Lauricocha province, Huánuco region, central Peru. In Peru’s regional and municipal elections, some candidates have drawn attention purely for their unusual names, and he is one of them. His name overlaps with the Nazi German leader and the founder of Italian fascism, which has made him a talking point.

Running for the Ahora Nación party, he won 229 votes, or 34.54% of the valid votes. Brazil’s CBN (2) reported him as a left-wing candidate, noting that he himself stated when announcing his candidacy that he had previously belonged to Keiko Fujimori’s right-wing party before leaving it in 2025.

Second place went to Renovación Popular with 204 votes (30.77%), and third to País Para Todos with 187 votes (28.20%). The gap between first and second place was just 25 votes, and only 42 votes separated first from third — a genuinely close race.

Heads up — that's Ichiro Tominaga (a cartoonist famous for a goofy salute-like pose often mistaken for a Nazi gesture)

    Background and talking points

Peru has a distinctly South American naming culture, where naming children after historical figures or famous foreigners isn’t unusual. There are even reports that more than 500 Peruvians carry Dragon Ball character names (Krillin, Piccolo, and others), and the name “Hitler Mussolini” in this story appears to stem from that same cultural tradition. The “left-wing” label in the article refers to the political stance of Ahora Nación, the party the winning candidate currently belongs to — it has nothing to do with the actual ideology of the historical Hitler or Mussolini. The thread did spark a debate over whether Nazism counts as politically “left” or “right,” but since that’s not a question with a settled academic answer, and neutrality couldn’t be maintained, it isn’t reflected in this article. It’s also worth noting this election was for mayor of a single Peruvian district (Quero Palca) — not a national office — a point that’s easy to misread.

  • Free-Fare Toddler Takes Up a Whole Unreserved Seat on the Shinkansen — Post Sparks Debate, JR Central Responds

A post on Threads claiming that a free-fare toddler was occupying an entire seat in an unreserved car on the Tokaido Shinkansen went viral, sparking mixed reactions. Shinkansen fare rules for toddlers state that up to two children per adult can ride free on an adult’s lap, but a child’s fare is required if the child occupies a seat alone — and JR Central’s position on the matter has also been reported. In response, a thread on 5ch saw a wide range of opinions clash, touching on unreserved-seat etiquette, the de facto seat-hogging via luggage, and backlash against the trend of prioritizing parents traveling with children.

    Reserved seats are a no-go.

Basic rules for toddlers and reserved seating:

    • On a lap (free): If the child sits on an adult's lap without occupying a seat, up to 2 toddlers per adult ride free. In unreserved cars, it's free as long as the child isn't taking up a seat.
    • Using a reserved seat (paid): Even a toddler must have a child's ticket (half the adult fare) if they occupy a reserved seat (standard or Green Car) by themselves.
    • Traveling with 3 or more toddlers: Only 2 toddlers per adult ride free. From the third child onward, a child's fare applies even in unreserved cars.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Shinkansen toddler fare rules work like this: up to two children per adult can ride free if seated on an adult’s lap, but a child’s fare (half the adult rate) is required if the child occupies a seat alone. Because unreserved-seat tickets are cheap — only around 530 yen — many passengers skip reserved seating altogether and ride in the unreserved cars, which makes disputes over how this free allowance is handled more likely to flare up when cars get crowded. In the thread, opinions split between “parents with young children deserve some consideration” and “by the rules, this should require payment.” Commenters also brought up the related practice of placing luggage on an empty adjacent seat to effectively claim it, as well as how crowded unreserved cars have become amid the tourism boom — with this post being treated as a symbolic example of that broader trend. While the original news report simply conveys JR Central’s official position, the thread’s focus shifted more toward poor awareness of the actual rules and broader skepticism toward the unreserved-seat system itself — a nuance that doesn’t come through in the article alone.

The spark was a comparison video from an overseas user claiming that “the FF7 Remake is an insult to the original — they’ve turned it into a Disney theme park.” Many pointed out the mismatch between the photorealistic graphics and the still-anime-style scenario direction, and complaints stood out over how Aerith’s death scene was changed. On the other hand, some pushed back that fans were simply putting the original on too high a pedestal, and others welcomed the added content outright — so opinions never settled into a consensus.

    Couldn’t argue with that.

Where'd the info come from that in the original version, that old lady was getting paid by Shinra just for squatting in Cloud's rebuilt house? Even if you try asking her about it through the dialogue options, she just tells you to get out, right?
    4AnonymousOct 11, 2026 12:55
    It's all because trash-tier PlayStation ('Gomi-Sute') exists, isn't it?
Square Enix ('Kuzu-Eni,' i.e. 'Trash-Enix') nearly died making FF16 a PS exclusive for Sony's ('Chony') benefit, and when they finally reached for their last lifeline, this is what happened.
And after that, apparently Sony's treating Square Enix like trash too.
    5AnonymousOct 11, 2026 12:57
When doing a remake, adding new content or filling in gaps here and there is totally welcome, but if they're just going to change things outright, I'd rather they didn't release it at all.
    6AnonymousOct 11, 2026 12:59
Well, as someone who only cleared the FF7 original once, I don't really care either way, but I guess for people who love it so much they're attached to the whole world/setting, having the remake change things must really sting.

    Re: #6
When I played the remake, I figured the story would branch off afterward into an 'Aerith survives' route, but in the end nothing really changed — they just threw in this parallel-world thing, and I still don't get what they were even going for.

Out of everyone at Square, Nomura ('Nomu-rish') in particular just doesn't understand the beauty of subtraction — less is more.

Lol, the symbol of crap-tier PlayStation ('Kuso-Sute') ended up looking like an absolute wreck.
    9AnonymousOct 11, 2026 13:03
Can they please drop this habit of turning the final boss fight into a scripted event battle?
You're forced into a fixed party and dragged along a fixed rail through a dull, dragging battle that isn't fun at all.
At least for the very end, let us go all out with whatever party and build we actually want.
    10AnonymousOct 11, 2026 13:05
They do have a tendency to throw in gag segments with pretty lame taste.

    12AnonymousOct 11, 2026 13:07
There was no real point in going photorealistic, huh.

Well, twenty years ago, it probably would've been true.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The FF7 Remake has unfolded as a trilogy, running from 2020’s “FF7R” through “Rebirth” (2024), and some in the thread compared this to the full remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” which was released as a single, standalone title. Calls for an FF7 remake had already been circulating for nearly 20 years, going back to the PS3 tech demo unveiled in 2006, and one point of debate in the thread was the gap between that “20-year-long anticipation” and how the final product actually turned out. Another axis of the debate was the mismatch between visuals and presentation: several posters noted that despite the photorealistic-leaning graphics, the in-story direction and dialogue delivery remained anime-style, and opinions split over this. Views were also divided over how Aerith’s death was handled and the parallel-world elements, with one camp wanting it to stay true to the original and another appreciating the changes. It’s worth noting that phrases like “an insult to the original” and “a Disney theme park” reflect how some fans personally feel about it, not an official position stated by the developers.

  • How Far Did Dragon Quest’s Golden Age Really Go? 5ch Thread: “Script Length Ballooned from 2,800 Pages in DQ5 to 16,000 in DQ7”

A thread on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha) asking whether “Dragon Quest’s golden age only ran through the Famicom quartet (I-IV) and Super Famicom’s DQ5” sparked a debate over just how far the series’ run of masterpieces really extended. One theory for why development cycles stretched out from DQ6 onward was a surge in script length — pointing out that the text ballooned from roughly 2,800 pages in DQ5 to about 16,000 pages by DQ7. On the other hand, DQ7 actually set a new all-time sales record for the series, and DQ9 pushed the number even higher, putting the popular narrative that “old fans drifted away” at odds with the actual sales figures. The discussion also branched into specifics — battle balance, the quality of various remakes, and how the Builders spin-offs stack up.

    1AnonymousOct 11, 2026 12:11
Everything after that is just some Dragon-Quest-flavored thing wearing the Dragon Quest name.
    2AnonymousOct 11, 2026 12:14
Why did development slow down so much from DQ6 onward?
Feels like they used to crank these out pretty fast before that.

And it's not like they're pouring money into cutscenes the way Final Fantasy does.

    Script length:
    DQ5 — 2,800 pages
    DQ6 — 4,000 pages
    DQ7 — 16,000 pages

No way development wraps up in the same timeframe with that much text.

    DQ8 → best-selling PS2 game in Japan
DQ9 → set a new all-time sales record for the series

If you go by the Famicom generation's gut feeling, the peak was around Super Famicom's DQ3, but

Around the time of DQ7, the Famicom generation was in their 20s to 50s,
and younger generations got pulled along with them — that's what created the golden age.
After that it's probably been a gradual decline.

Also, DQ9 only allowed one save file per copy, so I suspect its numbers are inflated by something like 1.5x from people buying extra copies.

Sorry to the Zenithian-trilogy faithful, but Dragon Quest really only breaks down into "the Erdrick/Loto trilogy" and "everything else, a bunch of also-rans."

DQ7 — would've been fun if not for getting stuck collecting stone tablets.
DQ8 — genuinely fun, and the graphical leap was huge.
DQ11 — arguably the most fun in the whole series, and for a DQ game the graphical leap was impressive too.

Sales aside, I think DQ9 is really the biggest problem,
and following it up with the online-only DQ10 as a one-two punch is what really did the damage.

    Re: #102
Thinking back on it now, Shin Megami Tensei II was actually a pretty mediocre game.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Dragon Quest’s script length has grown enormously since the Famicom era, and the figures cited in the thread — “2,800 pages for DQ5, 4,000 for DQ6, 16,000 for DQ7” — were offered as one illustration of how much the series’ development scope expanded. Indeed, release intervals widened from DQ6 onward, and the idea that growing scenario volume is one reason development dragged on is a theory fans often bring up. At the same time, DQ7 set a new all-time sales record for the series at the time, and DQ9 pushed the number even higher on the back of changes like its save-data specifications — leaving a gap between the popular narrative of “old fans drifting away” and the actual sales data. What split opinion in the thread was whether to weight nostalgia- and memory-tinted judgments of where the “masterpiece line” falls, or the hard sales and review data. One point readers can easily miss: raw sales figures alone don’t automatically indicate a “golden age” — the broadening of the fan base and shifts in the market environment are also tangled up in the picture.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Underlying this incident is a structure in which idols’ photos get used for team and agency promotional purposes. As post 33 points out, it’s not unusual for a team to tacitly allow, or even supply, photos taken by the press — these are often a form of promotion rather than candid paparazzi shots. What really divided opinion on the thread wasn’t whether she should come to cheer at all, but how her visibility there should be judged. Supportive comments praised her expressions and the intensity of her cheering, while critical ones took issue with her “drawing more attention than the players” and argued she “should prioritize her main career.” It’s also worth noting that, as in post 23’s comparison of X follower counts, some comments dragged in the pecking order of fame among Hello! Project alumnae — meaning the discussion spread into territory that had little to do with the act of cheering itself.

  • Does Crime Pay More Than Honesty? 5ch: “Even Bad Guys Live Earnestly in Their Own Way”

A thread that kicked off with posts like “Living honestly is starting to feel pointless” and “Don’t bad people actually have better lives?” sparked heated debate on the Gaming Hardware (Geha) board. Some argued that people who turn to wrongdoing have more options and reap more rewards precisely because they’re not bound by the law, though they tend to make enemies and often end up miserable in their later years. Others pointed out that we only ever notice the “bad guys” who succeeded — the ones who failed and got caught simply vanish from view, so there’s a survivorship bias at play. The discussion also exposed differing views on just what laws and police are actually for, raising point after point that couldn’t be reduced to a simple good-versus-evil binary.

If it feels pointless, just go be a bad guy then.
And "living honestly" is just your own subjective take anyway.
Bad guys are just living earnestly in their own way too — they just happen to commit crimes while doing it. Not that different from you, really
    11AnonymousOct 11, 2026 08:43
Can't really think of any bad guys close enough to you that you could actually follow their whole life, right?
The delinquents from school usually dropped out after junior high, hung around the neighborhood, and then you lose track of them around the time they get arrested.
And if you actually know a "successful" bad guy personally, aren't you already one yourself?

I love the doctor's philosophy from Q.E.D. (the detective manga):
You're old, bedridden, hospitalized, pain shooting through your whole body — and you're about to go under the knife for the surgery that's supposed to finally end it.

And here's the twist: you are the one performing the surgery on yourself. If your worldview is "making money matters most," or "work is just how I earn a living," or "it's fine to be bad at your job as long as you put your heart into it" — then that's exactly the kind of doctor who shows up for you

If you could get away with it, crime is the most profitable thing there is.
But that only works as long as there are victims to exploit — once you've drained them all dry, you're stuck
    33AnonymousOct 11, 2026 09:48
That's true enough, but it comes down to personality, so it's not simple.

And even short of calling someone a full-on "bad guy," people who have no problem lying or who play dirty do tend to come out ahead a lot of the time.

But if you're fundamentally an honest person, doing something bad eats away at you, and lying leaves you regretting it forever.

    It's a tough one.

Though for what it's worth, the kind of airheaded idiots who fall for anything and become instant true believers tend to be pretty happy too, in their own way

I could never do it myself — the guilt would crush me.
"Everyone else is doing it too" doesn't factor into it at all.

Scumbags live honestly with themselves, to put it kindly — or selfishly, to put it bluntly — so their real feelings tend to leak straight into their work.
People of good character, on the other hand, are just skilled at hiding their true feelings and keeping them in check through reason.

Though these days even rock musicians are out there advertising how anti-drug and clean-living they are, so scumbags increasingly only get support from other scumbags.
Even artists and creators are now expected to stay "compliant" with social norms

To begin with, everyone is always living on the sacrifice of others, whether they mean to or not.
And even among intentional sacrifices, there are layers to it — whether it's for your own life, your family's life, basic survival, or just plain pleasure, it varies a lot.

Framing things purely in terms of good and evil is difficult to begin with. Ethical standards differ from person to person, and if you draw the line at "obeys the law vs. doesn't," almost everyone has broken some law or another

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “honest people get the short end of the stick” style of argument is a theme that resurfaces online every time a corporate scandal or a politician’s misconduct makes the news, and this thread is no exception. That said, as pointed out within the thread itself, this kind of argument has a structural blind spot. The “bad guys” whose lives worked out stand out and get noticed, but the people who did the same things and ended up failing, getting arrested, or ruined simply disappear from view — a selection bias (comments 11, 15). There’s also a misunderstanding embedded in the counterargument that “it’s strange for bad guys to come out ahead when police and laws exist.” As comments 50 and 52 touch on, law and the justice system aren’t devices built to completely eradicate wrongdoing — they function purely as a deterrent, and the mere existence of bad guys who don’t get caught doesn’t by itself mean the system is contradictory. The core of where opinions split in this thread is that it conflates morality with gain and loss, when in reality multiple separate factors — effort, luck, and how the law actually gets enforced in practice — are all tangled together.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] Sorry, but isn’t it true that “bad guys” have it better in life??“.

  • “Skip the 21-Minute Train, Let’s Walk 35” Remark Has 5ch Asking: “Do You Live at the Ends of the Earth?”

A woman’s remark — “I’d rather be with someone who says ‘let’s walk 35 minutes’ instead of taking the 21-minute train” — was picked up in a 5ch thread, and opinions split over what the numbers actually meant. The results change drastically depending on whether “21 minutes” refers only to the time spent riding the train between stations, or to the total travel time including walking to the station, transfers, and waiting. Commenters tested the claim against real routes, like Kannai–Minatomirai in Yokohama and Tsudanuma–Shin-Narashino in Chiba, and a clear gap emerged between those taking the remark romantically and those poking at the inconsistency in the numbers.

    • Route: From Kannai Station to Minatomirai Station
    • Walking (approx. 30-35 min):
    • The distance is about 2.2km. It's a straight route where you can sightsee near Bashamichi and the Red Brick Warehouse along the way.
    • Train (approx. 21 min):
    • You'd take the JR Negishi Line to Yokohama Station, then transfer to the Minatomirai Line to get back to Minatomirai Station. Including transfer time, even the train takes over 20 minutes.

Even people used to walking get told "where on earth do you live, the ends of the earth?!" by everyone just for living 10 minutes from the nearest station — that's how far it feels
Something over 30 minutes of being made to walk like that could easily become a reason for breaking up

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Topics in the “what a woman said” genre are often quoted without any source or context, and this case is no different — nothing in the thread confirms whether the original remark was an actual social media post. The crux of the debate comes down to one question: do “21 minutes by train” and “35 minutes on foot” refer to the same stretch? Comparing only station-to-station riding time, the numbers don’t add up — but commenters repeatedly pointed out that they do work if you count total travel time, including walking to the station and transfer/waiting time. Several replies tested the numbers against real routes — Kannai–Minatomirai in Yokohama, Tsudanuma–Shin-Narashino in Chiba — to get a feel for the actual distances. That the thread fixated on the consistency of the numbers themselves rather than the intent behind the remark is a very 5ch touch.

  • Inba Marsh Levee Breach Sparks Snapping Turtle Boom? “Breeding Switch” Could Mean 50x Growth a Year

Inba Marsh in Chiba prefecture suffered multiple levee breaches before dawn on the 22nd after heavy rain from Typhoon No. 25, raising fears that the range of the invasive snapping turtles established in the marsh could expand even further. According to the original article, once a “breeding switch” is triggered, their numbers could multiply by as much as 50 times in a single year. On 5ch, some proposed eating the turtles as pest control or using natural predators to curb them, while others questioned not the turtles’ breeding power itself but the marsh’s inadequate drainage capacity after the breach and the history behind its land reclamation — broadening the discussion into disaster-prevention territory.

Snapping Turtles Set to Explode After Inba Marsh Levee Breach? Experts Warn of a “Breeding Switch” That Could Mean Up to 50x Growth a Year

It’s been just over two weeks since Typhoon No. 25 caused massive damage centered on the Kanto region, including Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.

Around Inba Marsh, where multiple sections of the levee breached before dawn on the 22nd, there are concerns that the range of the snapping turtle — a designated invasive species believed to be established in the marsh — could expand.

Like softshell turtles, they're muddy-tasting, so if you're going to eat one, a week of purging in clean water is a must.
But they're a designated harmful invasive species, so moving a live one without a permit is banned — you can't just take one home alive.

This is what happens when you don't wipe them out down to the very last one — they just keep spreading, exactly like with the kyon (the invasive Reeves's muntjac deer).

Inba Marsh used to be much bigger, but it's been boxed in and shrunk down by levees in the name of land reclamation — now nature's giving it payback.
All anyone thinks about is expanding farmland? Is eating really all people care about?

Snapping turtle countermeasures boomerang back — kinda like Gamera, lol (the giant turtle kaiju)

    Background and Points of Debate

The snapping turtle was designated a specified invasive species in 2005, and transporting or keeping one alive without a permit is banned under the Invasive Alien Species Act. “Eat to support” was a popular refrain in the thread, but what doesn’t come through from the original article or the thread’s reactions alone is that prep work like purging the mud out is required, and that legally bringing one home means dispatching it on the spot rather than transporting it live. The discussion also expanded beyond the turtles’ breeding power itself to touch on how Inba Marsh’s waters have been narrowed over the years through land reclamation, along with criticism of the levee’s inadequate drainage capacity — blending invasive-species concerns with criticism of flood-control policy. The phrase “breeding switch” comes from the original article’s headline, and the thread doesn’t go into detail on exactly which environmental factors would trigger it.

  • “Detective Tsuda” Heads to Taiwan — Minamikawa and “Drum” Join In, Producer Fujii Reveals Behind-the-Scenes

The “assassination” uproar that broke out during TBS’s live broadcast of “All-Star Thanksgiving Festival ’26 Autumn” is set to tie in with the popular segment “Detective Tsuda.” Atsuhiro Tsuda of the comedy duo Diane will take on the role of investigator, heading to Taiwan together with his partner Minamikawa and “Drum,” a character from the drama “VIVANT.” Producer Kentaro Fujii commented, “We’ve split staff into a Night Festival team and a Detective Tsuda team (a separate unit), so everyone’s running flat out,” shedding light on the behind-the-scenes production setup. On 5ch, reactions split between those welcoming the segment becoming an annual tradition and those knocking it as a tired routine that gets less funny the bigger the budget gets.

“Detective Tsuda,” the popular segment from Downtown’s namesake show “Wednesday Downtown” (TBS), kicked off on the 10th in an unexpected way. Sparked by the “assassination” that occurred during the network’s live special “All-Star Thanksgiving Festival ’26 Autumn: 70th Broadcast Anniversary SP,” the segment is now tying in with the currently airing Sunday drama “VIVANT” as well. Atsuhiro Tsuda of Diane has taken on the investigation, with Drum and his “partner” Minamikawa joining in too — a development that’s got viewers’ expectations rising.

During that day’s live broadcast of “All-Star Thanksgiving Festival ’26 Autumn: 70th Broadcast Anniversary SP,” a bizarre incident occurred when a show assistant was “assassinated” live on air. Host Koji Imada asked guests Ryusei Yokohama and Shun Oguri, who were appearing live, to help get to the bottom of the case, but they turned him down, citing filming commitments.

They're just having fun amongst themselves at this point.
The cheap Yokomizo-style (mystery writer Seishi Yokomizo) parody, with Tsuda visibly hating it — that was the good part.

I genuinely don't get what's funny about this.

It needs to be more like once every two years — Tsuda's already wise to the bit by now.
They need to swap in a different segment or person.

Is this airing on New Year's Eve this year?
If they pull it off, this could become the Reiwa-era "You Must Not Laugh" (the famous Gaki no Tsukai New Year's special).

Sowashi and the others look likely to do their New Year's Eve thing again this year, so there's probably no room for this on the 31st.

Once everyone just accepted the absurd setup — time machines and all — without even pushing back on it, it stopped being funny.

"Detective Tsuda" is the segment that brings out Tsuda's funny side to the absolute max.
    11AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:43
Tsuda's only funny when he's playing detective.

    13AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:43
Minamikawa's just there to assist with the staged setups, so he's unnecessary.
That's probably exactly why he's so valued on Wednesday Downtown though.

It's the character from VIVANT who talks through a smartphone.
Since he can't actually speak himself, making him an investigation assistant is going to be rough lol.

Tsuda clearly knows by now this is a cushy gig,
so watching him put on his fake-tantrum act about hating it just isn't funny anymore.
    17AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:53
    Is "Drum" even Japanese?
Is that the character's name, or an actual stage name?

The "secret guest" theory is way too sloppy, so this has to be foreshadowing for Detective Tsuda.

Same thing happened with the album thing — I bet it'll all click into place as planned foreshadowing.
    23AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:02
At this point it's just a segment that flops no matter how much money they needlessly throw at it.
    24AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:04
The funny part was Tsuda doing it reluctantly, but lately he can't hide how into it he actually is.
    27AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:05
Surely Drum disappears partway through, right?
If he stuck around the whole time, the conversations would drag.
    28AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:09
The second installment was the last one that was actually funny.
Same as "You Must Not Laugh" — the fancier they make it, the less funny it gets.

Is he gonna ask for "short sleeves, please" again this time?
    35AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:34

No matter how much they're staying in character, it's creepy and it kills the pacing.
    42AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:50

Blew up the murder weapon with a lantern to destroy the evidence.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Detective Tsuda” began as a segment designed to capture Atsuhiro Tsuda’s unscripted reactions, and over the years the cast and sets have grown increasingly elaborate. This installment was triggered by a staged “assassination” during the live “All-Star Thanksgiving Festival” broadcast, which led into a tie-in with the drama “VIVANT” and Tsuda’s trip to Taiwan. The thread split between those arguing that “budget and funniness are inversely proportional” — the bigger the production, the less funny it gets — and those praising the segment for becoming a beloved yearly tradition. Many replies were simply trying to pin down basic facts, like what role Minamikawa plays and whether “Drum,” the VIVANT character, is even human — background worth knowing for readers unfamiliar with the segment. It’s also worth noting that the “assassination” is a scripted bit within the special, not an actual incident, which is easy to misread.
