The story

Following the announcement of a new Naruto collaboration anime aimed at overseas audiences, 5ch highlighted reactions showing that many international fans have never heard of “Ninku,” a ninja manga serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump during the 1990s. In the thread, some argued that Ninku’s anime staff became the foundation for Naruto’s production team, while others pointed out that the series was never a major hit even in Japan — sparking discussion over the gap between its reputation at home and its near-total obscurity abroad.

Even I don't remember the story of Ninku 🥺
6AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:43
Depending on your generation, the Jump ninja manga would be Fūma no Kojirō

Re: #6
Masami Kurumada insisting it's a ninja manga even though they fight in school uniforms with wooden swords
7AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:43
I remember reading the manga, but I recall getting confused about the timeline
8AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:44
The anime staff might have actually been pretty similar
10AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:44
Seems like the new Naruto collab anime announcement is getting absolutely roasted
12AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:45
Guess not just any fantasy ninja show will do
Though it doesn't really feel very "ninja" anyway
14AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:46
They're literally saying they don't know Ninku in the OP (opening post)
15AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:46
Foreigners probably only know Dragon Ball from that era of Jump manga
16AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:46
Wasn't Ninku the one where the author kind of lost it (went off the rails)?
17AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:47
Apparently very few people know Ninku these days
18AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:47
It's actually fun, so overseas folks should give it a read
19AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:47
Naruto caught on overseas because the protagonist was drawn like a white guy, you know
20AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:52
Looks like it's getting torn to shreds
21AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:54
Both are Tetsuya Nishio and both are Pierrot, so of course
23AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:54
The classic "the source Naruto ripped off, which you all love" post
24AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:55
The author kept bringing up Ninku the whole time, so give the 4-episode anime a break
The anime itself is probably going to run like 500 episodes anyway
25AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:55
If Ninku had come out later and had a more approachable art style, it probably would've been popular
26AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:56
Honestly, it wasn't even that popular in Japan either
28AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:57
Re: #26
Yeah, it was a short-lived series that got cancelled
Having cool scenes and actually being good are two different things
27AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:56
But I get the feeling
You'd be pissed if Arale from Dr. Slump suddenly showed up in Dragon Ball, right?
30AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:57
Re: #27
Like One Piece showing up in Dragon Ball
33AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:00
Re: #27
What about when Frieza showed up in Kochikame (a long-running gag manga about Tokyo cops)?
92AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:35
Re: #27
But Arale actually does appear in both the Dragon Ball manga and anime
32AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:59
Lol, getting hated on way too much
Looking like Fūsuke but carrying a heavy past and being strong is exactly what tickles that edgy teenage ("chūnibyō") spirit
It's like how Yoda looks the way he does but is still strong and cool
34AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:00
Those guys scream "NO AI!! Support real artists! Real artists!!" but show zero respect themselves
44AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:05
Whether you're well-versed in it or not, "never seen or heard of it" seems like a stretch
Any Japanese person should at least recognize Fūsuke's look
46AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:08
Re: #44
Nah, I really don't know it
66AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:19
I mean, it's supposedly one of the sources Naruto drew from, and Naruto is a worldwide hit, but the fact that Ninku isn't recognized at all kind of tells you something
It's got few volumes so it'd be easy to translate, and there's an anime too
So the foreigners who did eventually find Ninku probably just didn't think it was good, which is why it's basically unknown these days
74AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:23
Re: #66
Well, a lot happened and it took forever to actually finish
But still, you should at least know what inspired Naruto
67AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:19
Do they think it's being made for overseas audiences?
68AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:20
Re: #67
Well of course, they've got this whole "Cool Japan" (lol) thing going
72AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:22
Re: #68
Not really sure what that has to do with this
Is that even a thing people recognize in the first place?
87AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:32
Re: #72
Since Japan's side is trying to promote it, you'd think they'd know about it
83AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:30
The anime is basically just Naruto
89AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:33
Re: #83
That's because it was done at Kishimoto's request
96AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:43
But thanks to Ninku, Kishimoto was able to bring Tetsuya Nishio onto the NARUTO anime, and that's part of how NARUTO became a global phenomenon
I do give credit for that achievement
100AnonymousOct 11, 2026 16:45
Re: #96
Lol, that's just because Nishio himself is amazing

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Ninku” was a ninja manga serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump during the 1990s, and the thread discusses the claim that staff from its anime adaptation later went on to work on NARUTO. However, the series’ name recognition was always limited even in Japan due to its short run, and the thread itself was split — some said “it wasn’t even that popular in Japan,” while others insisted “at least the visuals should look familiar” — so there’s no real consensus. Since overseas anime awareness depends heavily on how far official streaming and translations have reached, it’s not unusual for a work considered a domestic “source of inspiration” to have a very different level of recognition abroad. It should be noted that these are simply impressions from 5ch users, not primary-source verification of Ninku’s staff connections or its actual popularity.
