  • From 5ch: VIP Board Regulars Flock to an ‘Info Broker’ Who Answers Every Question With One Word on Paper

An "Info Broker" who showed up on the News VIP board answers any question thrown at it by silently holding up a scrap of paper with a single word scrawled on it. Trolling questions get shut down with lines like "Cut it out" or "Fakes, begone" — but it also patiently handled a genuinely practical question about how to store mentsuyu (noodle dipping sauce), advising "Use extra-bonito-flavored tsuyu."

    Background and Key Points

5ch’s News VIP board (livejikkyo VIP, literally “Very Important Person” board) is the site’s default home for absurdist, low-stakes joke threads, and it has its own visual shorthand: kaomoji “faces” like (´・ω・`) function as recurring mascot characters rather than plain emoticons. The “info broker” gag plays on that convention — a silent AA character who only ever answers via a placard, styled like a noir informant, refusing all follow-up questions with curt non-answers. This is a well-worn format on the board: a single-line, deadpan response to whatever absurd or mundane question gets thrown at it.

Where the thread actually splits is over how seriously to treat the mentsuyu tangent. Most of the exchange is pure bit — trolling, fake IDs, a culprit-is-Yasu meme reference — but one poster’s complaint about mentsuyu’s “use within three days” rule derails the joke format into an actual kitchen-tips subthread, with posters offering real, slightly conflicting storage advice (bonito-heavy varieties, canned versions, single-serve packets) rather than in-character non-answers.

What’s likely to trip up readers unfamiliar with Japanese pantry staples: mentsuyu is a concentrated soy-based dashi sauce used for soba, udon, and tsuyu-based dishes, and its shelf life varies enormously by concentration — ready-to-use (straight, non-concentrated) bottles do spoil within days once opened, but the double- or triple-concentrated versions, thanks to their high salt and sugar content, can safely keep in the fridge for months, which is what the “keeps a year” reply is gesturing at. The thread itself never clarifies this distinction, leaving the advice sound but under-explained.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News VIP) thread “(´・ω・`) I’m the town’s info broker, codename ‘Leak’.”

  • Delivery Driver Abuse Sparks Fierce Debate on 5ch: “Customers Have Zero Manners”

A news story about worsening “customer harassment” (kasu-hara) toward delivery drivers has been picked up on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board. The thread split between posters defending drivers with “delivery customers have terrible manners” and others pushing back with “they’re professionals, they should just handle it” — while drivers themselves shared raw, firsthand accounts, from being forced to deliver in the middle of a sudden torrential downpour to having a car crash straight into their house.

A Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare survey found that more than 40% of people working in the delivery industry have experienced customer harassment — a figure far above the cross-industry average, and the starting point for the discussion.

As demand for home delivery keeps growing, “customer harassment” toward the people who do that work is becoming a serious problem. In the first-ever survey targeting delivery-industry workers, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare found that more than 40% reported experiencing customer harassment — far higher than in surveys covering workers across all industries. Some point out that Japan’s famously attentive delivery service is itself inviting this harassment, and a number of companies have begun taking a firmer stance in response.

I've worked all kinds of jobs, and delivery customers are by far the worst. With a convenience store or supermarket there's at least some concept of "customer base" — but with delivery, whether it's ritzy Minato Ward or the old downtown, the manners are exactly the same.
    17AnonymousAug 25, 2026 21:06

Scheduled time-slot delivery is fundamentally broken to begin with — unless you're paying enough for your one household alone to cover that day's entire revenue, don't expect it to work.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying you need to bow and scrape, though.
    126AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:08
A delivery driver told me: he hauled two cases of drinks over, got the silent "pretend not to be home" treatment, left a delivery notice, and the moment he got back to his van, the guy who'd been ignoring the door called him after seeing the notice — said he wanted to kill him right then.
    128AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:09
    Re: #126
Maybe they were just in the bathroom.
    129AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:12
    Re: #126
The time I wanted to kill someone the most was during a sudden torrential downpour — I called to say deliveries had to be paused, but the customer just steamrolled me with "never mind that, bring it now," and the call center wouldn't back me up either. So I had no choice but to reroute and rush that one house ahead of everyone else, and because of that, everyone else's deliveries got massively delayed. I still can't forget that one.

    Background and Key Points

The term at the center of this thread, “kasu-hara” (customer harassment, from “kasutama” – customer – plus “harassment”), is part of a broader Japanese vocabulary of workplace-harassment categories that also includes “pawa-hara” (power harassment, bullying by superiors) and “seku-hara” (sexual harassment). Unlike those, kasu-hara has only recently become a formal policy target: the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s first-ever delivery-sector survey found over 40% of workers had experienced it, well above cross-industry norms, prompting some local governments – Tokyo passed a customer-harassment prevention ordinance that took effect in April 2025 – to legislate against it, even though it carries no criminal penalty itself.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t “harassment is bad” (nobody argues otherwise) but whether the delivery model itself is the problem. One camp says delivery customers are uniquely entitled because scheduled time-slot delivery creates an expectation of a personal, on-demand service; the other insists drivers signed up as professionals and should absorb it as part of the job, a framing several posters reject by pointing to the industry’s chronic staff turnover.

What outside readers likely miss is that several posts (e.g., #4) are gesturing at a real legal distinction: Japan’s penal code already criminalizes “gyomu bogai” (forcible obstruction of business), so calling aggressive demands merely “harassment” can actually undersell conduct that’s separately prosecutable – a nuance the thread raises but never fully explains.

  • One Piece: Ace’s Death Still Sparks Controversy — 5ch: “Take It Back…”

A thread on 5ch’s Live/Anime Board (なんでも実況G) about how Ace from One Piece died sparked heated discussion. Posters debated the plot point where he dies after falling for a provocation, the later-revealed backstory behind Whitebeard’s famous “no wounds on his back” detail, and whether a more satisfying death could have been written.

Opinions were also divided on why a character with main-character-tier bloodline ended up meeting this fate.

Compared to Rengoku, another fire-themed character (from Demon Slayer), Ace's death is just pathetic.
Ace: goes berserk, gets the Whitebeard Pirates half-wiped out, then dies after falling for a cheap provocation, throwing it all away for nothing.

Rengoku: dies protecting the protagonist and everyone else to the very end.

Honestly the writing itself is just weak.
Every single character just stands around doing nothing until it's their turn, then introduces themselves, does a little something, and that's it.

    Background and Key Points

Portgas D. Ace’s death is not a recent plot point — it happened in the “Summit War of Marineford” arc, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2010 and adapted into the anime not long after, making it one of the most-revisited moments in Eiichiro Oda’s now nearly 30-year-old series. Ace, the biological son of the former Pirate King Gol D. Roger and the sworn brother of protagonist Luffy, was captured by Blackbeard (an act that earned Blackbeard a seat among the Seven Warlords, a now-defunct government system that pardoned strong pirates in exchange for service). His planned execution triggered a war between the Navy and the Whitebeard Pirates that ended with both Whitebeard and Ace dead, the latter killed by Fleet Admiral Akainu’s magma-fist after Ace charged him following an insult to his late father.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t whether Ace should have died — most posters accept the story needed it — but whether the way he died (goaded into a reckless charge) cheapens an otherwise strong character, and whether the later-revealed “Whitebeard never took a wound on his back” backstory was a poignant reveal or a retcon that undercuts him.

What the thread never mentions is the practical fallout: Ace’s death is the direct reason Sabo, the third sworn brother, was written into the story two years later, and it’s the hinge that pushes Luffy into the two-year training arc that reshapes the entire back half of the series — so structurally, the “pointless” death is anything but.

  • ICOCA Balance Vanishes Faster in Tokyo — Fares Billed ‘Down to the Yen’ Stun Users Used to Kansai’s 10-Yen Rounding

A post about being shocked that an ICOCA balance dropped from “3,000 yen to 659 yen” during a trip to Tokyo sparked a 5ch discussion about how Tokyo fares are calculated down to the yen, while Kansai fares round to the nearest 10 yen.

The thread saw comments like “It’s weird that IC card and paper ticket fares differ” and “IC fares should be unified by now,” alongside a string of replies explaining the differences between Kanto and Kansai IC fare systems.

I was shocked when my “ICOCA balance” went from “3,000 yen to 659 yen” on a trip to Tokyo! Is it normal for Tokyo fares to be calculated “down to the yen”? In Kansai it’s “10-yen units” — do I just have to spend the leftover change on shopping? | Financial Field | Cashless

    90AnonymousAug 25, 2026 18:46
    Re: #77
IC card fares were designed to accurately reflect the distance-to-fare ratio.

    Background and Key Points

For readers unfamiliar with the system: ICOCA is JR West’s prepaid transit card for the Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe), the counterpart to JR East’s Suica in Tokyo. Since March 2013, Japan’s ten major regional IC cards have been interoperable nationwide, so a Kansai-issued ICOCA works fine on Tokyo trains — which is exactly how the original poster ended up puzzled by their balance. The yen-versus-10-yen discrepancy traces back to consumption tax hikes (to 8% in 2014, 10% in 2019): paper ticket fares are rounded up to the nearest 10 yen because ticket machines can’t dispense 1- or 5-yen coins, while IC fares were calculated to the exact yen from the start, since electronic balances have no such physical constraint. This isn’t a Tokyo-only quirk — it applies to IC systems generally — but posters noted paper-vs-IC gaps run in different directions depending on the operator and route.

The thread didn’t converge on a single explanation. Some read the yen-precision as an IC “discount” meant to encourage cashless adoption after 20-plus years; others insisted it’s simply more accurate fare math with no discount involved, and one reply broke down the actual rounding rule (IC rounds down, paper rounds up) to settle it. A side argument broke out over PiTaPa, Kansai’s postpay IC card, which some framed as evidence Osaka riders have a savvier system, prompting pushback that it’s just a different payment model (postpay/credit-linked) rather than proof of a better deal.

What the thread never addresses is that leftover IC balances aren’t stranded money — cards can be refunded (minus a small handling fee) or the balance simply spent down naturally on convenience-store purchases, which several posts joke about but never fully explain as the standard workaround.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Breaking News Plus) thread “Shocked that my ICOCA balance in Tokyo went “3,000 yen → 659 yen”… Are fares really calculated “down to the yen”? Kansai uses “10-yen units”… do I just have to spend it on shopping?“.

  • Tomino Yoshiyuki’s “Judau Surpasses Amuro” Remark Sparks Reactions — 5ch: “Judau Has the Strongest Mentality”

    Re: #105
Wasn't it actually Lady Haman who treated Kamille — who was trying to reach out to her — like some vulgar nobody and cut him off?

    Background and Key Points

Yoshiyuki Tomino created the “Universal Century” Gundam lineage in three stages: the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, protagonist Amuro Ray, rival Char Aznable), Zeta Gundam (1985, protagonist Kamille Bidan), and Zeta Zeta (ZZ) Gundam (1986, protagonist Judau Ashta). These three works, plus the theatrical trilogy and Char’s Counterattack (1988), form the backbone of a franchise now in its fifth decade. ZZ has long occupied an awkward position in that lineage: it opened with a comedic, juvenile tone before darkening considerably, and Tomino himself reportedly wanted a “seven-part saga” of compilation films that quietly excluded ZZ altogether — a real production history, not fan speculation. Part of ZZ’s shakiness also traces to Tomino delegating episodes under a pen name during a period of overwork, which is why some fans argue it isn’t “really” his work.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t whether Judau is strong — it’s whether the three-way split of labor (Amuro’s combat skill, Kamille’s raw Newtype power, Judau’s mental stability) is a fair or even coherent way to compare protagonists built fourteen years apart under different creative pressures, with posters invoking a Maradona-vs-Messi framing to reject the exercise entirely.

What outsiders likely miss is that this isn’t really about combat rankings at all — it’s a proxy fight over ZZ’s legitimacy within the UC canon. Tomino is notorious for revising his own stated opinions about his shows years later, so a single quote elevating Judau reads to longtime fans less as settled lore and more as the latest flip in a decades-long pattern, which is exactly why the thread immediately questioned his credibility rather than taking the ranking at face value.

Miyama’s side reportedly insists there were “no romantic feelings” involved, but the tabloid also published excerpts of passionate LINE exchanges between the two, prompting a wave of skepticism on 5ch, with users saying “claiming she was forced to write that is a stretch.”

It wasn’t simply a case of mutual attraction

The “double affair” scandal involving former BE:FIRST member and actor Ryoki Miyama (27) and former Takarazuka Revue top musume-yaku Maria Kano (33) first surfaced after the two co-starred in the musical “Crash Landing on You.” The story sparked a huge reaction, but as reporting continued,

“This wasn’t just an affair — could there have been stalker-like behavior on Miyama’s part?”

    Background and Key Points

“No Romantic Feelings,” Says Ryoki Miyama — Stalking Allegations Surface Over 100+ Daily LINE/DM Messages

For readers unfamiliar with the Japanese entertainment ecosystem here: BE:FIRST is a major boy band from the SKY-HI-produced audition project “THE FIRST,” and Ryoki Miyama left the group in 2023 to pursue acting. Takarazuka Revue is the all-female musical theater troupe where performers are trained to play either male (otoko-yaku) or female (musume-yaku) roles for their entire career; a “top musume-yaku” like Maria Kano occupies one of the company’s most senior, publicly recognizable positions, making her departure and any scandal involving her unusually high-profile. Japanese tabloid culture (here, Weekly Gendai via FRIDAY) frequently drives these “story” scandals with leaked private message logs, which then get relitigated on 5ch — Japan’s largest anonymous forum network, descended from 2channel, where entertainment-news threads like this one function as a running public jury.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t whether an affair happened — posters broadly accept that it did — but whether Miyama’s “no romantic feelings, this was one-sided” defense is credible given that the leaked LINE messages appear to show Kano reciprocating enthusiastically. Posts #8, #9, and #125 explicitly mock the idea that she was “forced” to write flirtatious texts, which is the crux of the disagreement: is this a mutual affair with a stalking angle grafted on to protect one party, or genuine one-sided stalking despite the messages?

What’s easy to miss: no one in the thread addresses whether either party was married at the time (the “wife” reference in #50 is Miyama’s own deflection line, not confirmed fact), nor is there any independent verification that the leaked texts are authentic — the “fabricated” theory in #8 is raised and then dropped without scrutiny.

  • Lions Win 4th Straight, Fighters Drop 3rd in a Row — Taira Goes 7 Scoreless, Nakata Drives in 3 on 2 Hits

The Seibu Lions beat the Fighters 3-1, extending their winning streak to four games, while the Nippon-Ham Fighters fell to their third straight loss. Starter Taira turned in a strong outing, holding the Fighters scoreless over seven innings, and Nakata led the offense with 2 hits and 3 RBIs.

Beyond the usual fan-vs-fan trash talk, the thread also lit up over the legality of Otsuka’s borderline slide, suspicions that Reyes was stealing signs, and comparisons between manager Shinjo’s and manager Nishiguchi’s in-game strategy.

    Background and Key Points

The Pacific League context matters here: Seibu Lions vs. Nippon-Ham Fighters is a rivalry weighted by recent history — Fighters manager Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who markets himself as “BIG BOSS,” took the job promising a rebuild after years of mediocrity, while Lions skipper Nishiguchi is a former catcher steering a team trying to claw back into pennant contention despite a stated “magic number” deficit late in the season. NPB teams track a literal magic number (the combination of their wins and a rival’s losses needed to clinch), which is why posters debate whether Seibu’s run is a real comeback push or a lost cause.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t really about the box score — Taira’s scoreless start and Nakata’s 3 RBIs go almost unmentioned after the opening posts. The real split is fan identity: whether the Fighters (“Ham-kasu,” a derisive nickname built on the team’s old “Nippon-Ham” meat-processing sponsor) deserve mockery for underperforming under Shinjo’s aggressive bullpen usage, versus whether Seibu fans have any right to gloat given their own standings. A secondary flashpoint is Otsuka’s slide, which one side calls a dangerous “spike” and the other treats as ordinary hustle.

What outside readers will likely misread is the sign-stealing tangent — it’s not an accusation against anyone in this game, but a recycled jab referencing the SoftBank Hawks’ unrelated sign-stealing controversy, dragged in purely as a rival-bashing meme rather than a real allegation.

*This article is compiled and summarized from excerpts of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Pacific League L 3-1 F [8/25] Seibu win 4th straight, Taira 7 scoreless innings, Nakata 2 hits 3 RBIs, Nippon-Ham drop 3rd in a row.”

  • JAL Crash: Ministry to Disclose Repair-Error Details — 5ch: ‘Release the Voice Recorder First’

Regarding the Boeing repair error that caused the 1985 Japan Airlines crash, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has signaled plans to disclose the background of how the mistake occurred. This would mark the first time the Japanese government has clarified the circumstances behind the error, and on 5ch, comments poured in questioning whether the repair mistake was really the cause of the crash, alongside calls for the full release of the voice recorder.

Regarding the repair error by U.S.-based Boeing that caused the Japan Airlines crash (August 1985), Transport Minister Yasushi Kaneko stated at a post-cabinet meeting press conference on the 25th that MLIT intends to disclose the “background circumstances behind the mistake,” which the ministry has been investigating through interviews with Boeing and others.

Kaneko stated clearly, “We are currently reviewing the results obtained and confirming them ahead of disclosure. Once preparations are complete, we intend to release the findings.” If realized, this would be the first time the Japanese government has investigated and disclosed the background of the repair error.

In this accident, investigations at the time determined that the repair error was the cause, but since interviews with Boeing could not be conducted, the background — why the mistake occurred — remained unknown for many years. However, in August last year, media reports revealed that Boeing had referenced the background of the repair error on its own company website. MLIT’s Civil Aviation Bureau then began interviewing Boeing and the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration) to confirm the facts.

    Background and Key Points

The August 1985 crash referenced here is Japan Airlines Flight 123, a Boeing 747SR that struck Mount Osutaka in Gunma Prefecture, killing 520 of the 524 aboard — still the deadliest single-aircraft accident in aviation history. Japan’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission concluded that a botched 1978 tailstrike repair, carried out by Boeing technicians, caused the aft pressure bulkhead to fail in flight, severing hydraulic lines and the vertical stabilizer. Because Boeing is a U.S. company, Japanese investigators at the time had no authority to compel interviews with the technicians involved, leaving the human and procedural “why” behind the error undocumented in any Japanese government record for nearly four decades — which is the gap MLIT is now trying to close.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t over whether MLIT should release its findings, but over whether the repair-error explanation is even true. Posters split between accepting the official bulkhead-failure account and floating alternative theories (military strike, JSDF involvement, undisclosed design defects), each contesting specific physical evidence — recorder data, fragment coloration, damage direction — rather than the disclosure news itself.

What the thread misses is that flight recorder data from JAL123 has, in fact, already been analyzed and partly published by the investigation commission; the “voice recorder” posters demand full disclosure of remains legally in JAL’s custody but has never been fully released to the public, a practice distinct from any binding international treaty obligation. Readers should also know that Boeing’s own website reportedly already carried an account of the repair background — this MLIT effort is about official Japanese government confirmation, not new information.

Lotte, quit trying out your young guys against a team that's still fighting for the pennant.
We're busting our butts out here, and if a rival pulls this kind of throwaway effort against us, it could cost us the title.
Saburo (Lotte's manager) seriously needs to think about that.
Act with the whole league in mind for once.

Guess it'll be Satozaki (Tomoya Satozaki, ex-Lotte catcher turned commentator) running the team starting next year.
    27AnonymousAug 25, 2026 20:33
You've got to ease Akira Nakamura back in with low-pressure spots like this one at first.
The downside risk was way too big last time it didn't work out.

    Re: #31
Can't be helped, the guy's on his way out (retiring).
Kind of sad that Lotte's so weak they're letting a player like that drive in runs.

    Background and Key Points

The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and Chiba Lotte Marines are both Pacific League clubs in Nippon Professional Baseball’s 143-game season, which runs roughly April through October with no wild-card play-in – final standings alone decide the pennant. That structural fact is what gives the thread its edge: unlike MLB, there is no draft-lottery incentive to “tank,” so any team fielding a weakened lineup in August is read purely as a favor (or disservice) to a rival still chasing the title, not as a rebuilding strategy. Moinelo is one of Fukuoka’s veteran Cuban import pitchers, and Kimiyasu Kokubo, the manager quoted making the Nakamura pinch-hit call, is a Hall-of-Fame-caliber figure who played for the Hawks in the ’90s-2000s – his decisions carry outsized scrutiny.

The disagreement in the thread isn’t really about the 9-0 score itself; it’s about two separate personnel choices being read through a shared lens of “is this team taking the race seriously.” One camp objects to Lotte manager Saburo trying out young/inexperienced players against a contender, framing it as unfair to the other Pacific League teams still fighting for position. A second, softer strand defends using Akira Nakamura – described as on his way out, i.e. retiring – as a pinch hitter in a low-stakes, already-decided game, seeing it as an appropriate low-risk moment for a fading veteran rather than a competitive snub.

What outside readers may miss is that “still in the pennant race” is asserted by posters, not backed by any standings figures in the source article – so the sense of urgency driving the criticism of Lotte is itself unverified within the thread.

*This article is a condensed summary of the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Pacific League M 0-9 H [8/25] Hawks win again — Moinelo throws complete-game shutout, offense scores 5 in the first, Hirose’s bases-clearing double, Lotte’s Yoshikawa walks 6, allows 7.”

  • “PS6 Handheld Will Make Switch 2 Look Prehistoric,” Claims Overseas Post — Skeptics Push Back

An overseas X (formerly Twitter) account posted that “the PS6’s handheld will have graphics so overwhelming it’ll make the Switch 2 look prehistoric,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s game industry board (Geha). Many replies pointed out that the poster is just a fan with no ties to gaming media or any track record in analysis, while others questioned the claim’s feasibility on technical grounds, citing price, heat output, and differences in semiconductor process.

The PS6 will be a handheld that makes the Switch 2 look primitive.

That’s because it’ll pack PS6-level graphics on a handheld screen, while the Switch 2 only has PS4 Pro-level graphics.

Nintendo will always hold onto its position thanks to its wonderful exclusive titles, but compared to PlayStation it’ll remain old-fashioned.

The Switch 2's guts are already a generation old, and they're wasting cost on the dock and Joy-Cons, so the performance isn't that high

If the goal's set too high, just lower the goal to eye level
    Simple, right?

    Background and Key Points

Sony has never announced a PS6, let alone a PS6 handheld — the only mass-market Sony “portable” console history offers is the PS Vita (2011, killed off by 2019) and, more recently, the PS Portal (2023), which is not a standalone console but a streaming client that needs a PS5 and a network connection to run anything. The Switch 2, by contrast, is a real, shipped product: a self-contained handheld/dockable hybrid built on an Nvidia chip widely reported to be fabbed on an older (roughly Samsung 8nm-class) process, which is why posters treat “PS4 Pro-level” as a reasonable ceiling for its graphics. Bridging that to “PS6-level” performance in a fan-sized, battery-powered device is a real engineering problem: smaller nodes (3nm, 2nm) cut power draw per transistor, but cooling, battery capacity, and cost all scale badly once you chase console-class GPUs in a handheld shell — which is exactly why commenters brought up heat, price, and process generation rather than raw specs.

The thread didn’t split over whether Sony could technically build something powerful — it split over credibility: is a claim from an anonymous fan account with no journalism track record worth treating as insider information at all, versus dismissing it outright as fanboy wish-casting. Nobody in the thread engaged with the more basic fact that no PS6 hardware, portable or otherwise, has been confirmed by Sony in any form, timeline, or spec — so the entire debate about nanometers and dock designs is built on a premise the original poster invented, not on anything Sony has disclosed.
