  • As Highways Go ETC-Only, Why Do Some Drivers Still Insist on Paying Cash?

A 5ch thread took off after someone linked a Diamond Online article about the “ETC-cancellation crowd.” With ETC usage on expressways now topping 90% and more and more tollbooths going ETC-only, the thread dug into why some drivers deliberately choose to pay cash instead. Alongside practical reasons — needing paper receipts for expense reports, being unable to get a credit card, or wanting to avoid annual fees and renewal hassle — there were also joking remarks like “because it leaves a record of where you’ve been,” plus plenty of grumbling about the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s push to migrate everyone from old ETC to the newer ETC2.0 standard.

So THAT’s the deal with the “ETC-cancellation crowd”! The surprising reasons people still pay cash | Diamond Online

"B" is a fellow writer of the author's who also covers cars. B often borrows press demo vehicles from various manufacturers for test drives and photo shoots, and bills the expenses back to the editorial department commissioning the piece. When it comes to filing those expenses, surprisingly, the real hassle is issuing and managing the receipts.

So basically, the media constantly bashes paper documents, hanko stamps, and faxes, while making their own contractors do the exact same thing. That's hilarious.

Honestly, tollbooths already have cameras like those license-plate-reading parking lots — so why not let people apply online after using the toll road and pay with e-money? That way you could ditch both the ETC unit and the card entirely.

After I went bankrupt and the mark finally cleared from my credit record, I managed to get a credit card again — but with a credit limit of just 1. Can't get an ETC card issued with that; you need a limit of at least 10, since highway tolls can sometimes exceed a limit that low.

My motorcycle doesn't have an ETC unit, so I took the ETC card out of my car and handed it to the staff at a manned tollbooth lane — payment went through fine, but I got absolutely reamed out for it. I bought my VW ten years ago and ETC2.0 already came standard on it. Even its adaptive cruise control follow-driving is more polished than a lot of today's ◯◯◯ Sensing systems.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

ETC was formally rolled out in Japan in 2001, and usage now exceeds 90%. At the same time, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is pushing a transition from the old ETC standard to the newer “ETC2.0” standard, targeted for around 2030 — after which onboard units that don’t support the new standard are expected to stop working. Tollbooths are steadily going ETC-only as well, with cash and general lanes shrinking. In the thread, the most common reasons given for sticking with cash were practical: needing paper receipts for expense reporting, being unable to get a credit card, and wanting to avoid annual fees or renewal hassle. But there was also a recurring joking claim that cash avoids “leaving a record of an affair,” making it hard to tell how seriously to take that one. One lesser-known fact that came up: even people with a bankruptcy history can get an ETC card through deposit-backed secured card services. The thread saw a clear split between those calling for every lane to go ETC-only and those pointing out there will always be a segment of drivers who can’t or won’t switch — underscoring just how hard full automation of tollbooths really is.

  • “Only Men With No Dating Experience Confess to Me” — Advice Column Sparks Debate on 5ch

The Yomiuri Shimbun’s advice column “Otekomachi” published a letter from a woman puzzled that she’s only ever confessed to by men with no dating experience, with advice columnist Mitsu Dan weighing in. A thread on 5ch’s Geisoku Sokuho+ board picked up the story and traded theories about what these men might have in common. Some argued that men with lots of dating experience tend to pursue women themselves rather than wait to confess, while others countered that experienced men confess more often precisely because they make so many attempts. The discussion also drifted toward what it might be about the woman herself that attracts this type of man.

If a woman looks sharp with her fashion and makeup, guys sense her standards for men are probably high too, so even the dating-inexperienced stop harboring weird fantasies.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Otekomachi is a long-running advice column run by the Yomiuri Shimbun, and the segment featuring Mitsu Dan as respondent is a relatively recent addition. This post has her responding to a letter from a woman who says she’s only ever confessed to by men with no dating experience — but it’s worth noting that the thread barely quotes the actual substance of Dan’s reply; it’s really just the summarized letter that’s taken on a life of its own online. What split the thread was how to read the men doing the confessing: one theory held that men with lots of dating experience pursue women themselves and so don’t bother confessing, while the opposing theory held that it’s precisely those experienced men who confess more often, playing a numbers game. No consensus was reached. Also worth flagging is that the theory of a woman who “gives off a vibe that she’s within reach” recurred across several posts, even though the letter itself gives no details about the woman’s appearance or behavior — meaning readers are largely filling in their own assumptions to fuel the debate.

  • Nagisa Watanabe Says Saudi Arabia Became Her “Favorite Country in the World” — 5ch Fires Back: “Where Were You Even Looking?”

Television personality Nagisa Watanabe said that after a trip to Saudi Arabia, it became “the country I love most in the world,” explaining that the reason was that there, “no one makes you feel uncomfortable — you can just be yourself.” The article frames this against her experiences in Japan, where she says she gets stared at on trains and approached by men when out alone, and it’s that contrast that caught fire on 5ch. Since Saudi Arabia is a country whose record on women’s rights and dress codes draws famously mixed reviews, the thread filled up with both pointed remarks like “does she actually know anything about the real Saudi Arabia?” and comments sympathizing with her complaints about Japan’s “staring culture” — the reaction was anything but unanimous.

I seriously doubt women in Saudi Arabia
get to live as freely and "be themselves"
as much as Japanese women do.

    Background and points of debate

Saudi Arabia has pursued liberalization under its “Vision 2030” push — lifting the tourist visa ban in 2019 and allowing women to drive — but even as dress-code requirements for foreigners have relatively eased, the framework of restrictions on unmarried men and women’s behavior and harsh criminal penalties remains in place. Watanabe’s comments reflect the impressions of someone who was there as a tourist for just a few days, and the fact that this differs from the legal standing of women who actually live there is likely why the thread kept asking “what exactly was she looking at to say that?” At the same time, the discomfort she describes — being stared at on trains, getting approached by strangers — is a topic that resonates widely regardless of age or gender, so the discussion ended up blending unease over her framing of the contrast with agreement over the underlying experience itself.

  • SoftBank Manager Kokubo Skips Draft Meeting — 5ch Asks, ‘Why Isn’t Kokubo There?’

On October 22, 2026, to coincide with the NPB draft meeting broadcast on the TBS network, a thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō” (anything-goes live-commentary) board filled up with posts speculating on each team’s picks and describing the scene at the venue. The post that drew the most attention questioned why SoftBank Hawks manager Hiroki Kokubo was nowhere to be seen, with comments like “Watching the manager miss the lottery draw is the best part — don’t skip out on that!” Other popular posts included a roundup of first-round pick predictions from the sports dailies, and one pointing out that Aoyama Gakuin University has produced a first-round draft pick for four straight years.

    Background and Key Points

In Japan’s professional baseball draft, when multiple teams submit a first-round bid on the same player, a lottery decides which team gets negotiating rights — and the facial expressions of the team reps drawing lots become a talking point every year. The thread’s focus on Manager Kokubo’s absence comes from the fact that at many clubs it’s the manager himself who draws the lottery slip, which makes the contrast stand out; however, scouting and roster-building decisions are handled by the front office, and it’s not unusual for the on-field manager to have no involvement in the draft at all. As for Aoyama Gakuin University, posts in the thread point out that it has produced two first-round draft picks every year from 2023 through 2026 — four years running — cementing its reputation as a university that scouts watch closely. Several posts also grumbled about the draft’s paid livestream on U-NEXT, but it’s easy to overlook that the broadcast was free on YouTube in past years, meaning the streaming setup changes from year to year.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Because the NPB draft conference uses a lottery system, the outcome of the first-round picks is always the year’s biggest draw, and it’s become standard practice for terrestrial broadcasters to air only the first and second rounds live while treating the third round onward as news-flash updates. This time, TBS brought in Hello! Project alum Minaki Fujimoto for its broadcast, while at the same time Maria Makino was doing live commentary on a separate YouTube channel — meaning the same conference ended up covered live by multiple outlets with different talent. On the thread, many comments compared the two programs’ choice of talent, with some favoring other members from the same generation, such as Mai Satoda, Rika Ishikawa, and Asami Konno. Note that many of the actual draft results had not yet been determined at the time of the thread, so comments about individual teams’ negotiations should be read as viewer speculation.

  • Giants Take Yokohama’s Shoki Oda with Sole First Pick — 157 km/h Righty Who Declared for MLB

The NPB draft meeting was held on October 22, and the Yomiuri Giants used their first-round pick to select Yokohama High School pitcher Shoki Oda (a third-year, 157 km/h-max right-hander) who had publicly declared his intent to pursue a Major League career — and they were the only team to pick him. With a domestic club locking down a player who had his sights set on negotiating with an MLB team, whether he actually signs now comes down to his own decision. On the 5ch “Geinou Supo Sokuhou+” (Entertainment & Sports Breaking News+) thread, discussion split over corrections to posts that misunderstood how the posting system and the pro draft declaration work, whether a candidate for new manager might be used to help persuade him to sign, and whether there’s any precedent for a player turning down a Giants first-round pick.

    <NPB Draft Meeting> ◇October 22

The “NPB Draft Meeting, supported by Lipovitan D” was held on the 22nd starting at 4:50 PM.

The Yomiuri Giants used their first-round pick — and were the only team to do so — on Yokohama High School’s Shoki Oda (3rd year), a right-hander with a fastball topping out at 157 km/h who has declared his intent to pursue a Major League career.

Teams with deep pockets where it's easy to get playing time — the Nippon-Ham Fighters and the (Yokohama) DeNA BayStars.

Background and key points of debate

Under NPB’s draft system, a player must file a “pro draft declaration” to become eligible either for selection by an NPB club or for negotiation with an MLB team. The reason Oda filed the declaration despite publicly stating his intent to try his luck in the US comes down to this rule — and the fact that some posts on the thread mistook the filing as “proof he wanted to join NPB” shows just how confusing the system is. On the other hand, the Giants’ sole first-round pick goes through regardless of Oda’s own wishes, so whether he actually signs is still up to future negotiations and is by no means settled at this point. Posters debated whether a potential new-manager candidate like Hideki Matsui might be used to help persuade him to sign, as well as whether there’s precedent for a player turning down a Giants first-round pick (a case from more than 50 years ago still remembered among longtime fans), with opinions split. Note that this article does not cover unverified claims about Oda’s family’s appearance or background.

  • Nikkei plunges 1,713 points, closing below 63,000 for the first time in about 3 months

On the 22nd, the Nikkei Stock Average fell 1,713.40 yen from the previous day to close at 62,907.84, dropping below the 63,000 line. This marks the first time the closing price has fallen below 63,000 in roughly three months, since July 30’s close of 61,867.43. A slide by major U.S. chipmaking-equipment maker Lam Research in after-hours trading, combined with alarm over a vulnerability discovered in PHP — the programming language used by roughly 70% of the world’s websites — intensified selling in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks. The yen’s strengthening to around 157.20 per dollar also weighed on the market. On 5ch threads, comments crossed paths: new-NISA investors still making monthly contributions worried about unrealized losses, some fretted over an AI bubble bursting, and others recalled the slow, grinding decline of the 2008 Lehman Shock.

Nikkei falls sharply by 1,713 yen, closing below 63,000 for the first time in about 3 months — closing bell on the 22nd

In afternoon trading on the 22nd, the Nikkei Stock Average fell sharply, down 1,713.40 yen from the previous day to 62,907.84. The TOPIX (Tokyo Stock Price Index) also declined, down 46.23 points to 3,997.50. The Nikkei closed at its low for the day, marking its first close below 63,000 since July 30 (61,867.43). Buying and selling crossed in the morning session, with the index briefly turning positive, but after U.S. semiconductor-equipment maker Lam Research fell in after-hours U.S. trading, selling pressure intensified on AI- and semiconductor-related stocks in Tokyo as well. Concerns were also raised over the impact of a serious vulnerability found in PHP, the programming language used by roughly 70% of the world’s websites. The yen strengthening from its morning level to around 157.20 to the dollar added further pressure.

Trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 2.19167 billion shares, with a trading value of 7.0569 trillion yen. Among traded issues, 684 rose, 821 fell, and 48 were unchanged.

I guess it'll give back whatever the semiconductor rally added. The Nikkei gained something like 30,000 points off that, right?

Background and key points of this discussion

The Nikkei’s pullback is largely a reaction to overheated expectations around AI and semiconductor stocks. The trigger — a sharp after-hours drop by U.S. chipmaking-equipment giant Lam Research — spread caution across the market about the sustainability of AI-related investment. The other factor, the PHP vulnerability, was taken seriously precisely because PHP is used by roughly 70% of the world’s websites, meaning exploitation could potentially affect the internet as a whole. It’s easy to overlook that Japan’s new NISA tax-free investment program only launched in 2024, so most participants are still just a few years into their contribution period — even with unrealized losses now, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve fallen far below their average purchase cost. Some comments in the thread tied the market plunge to an evaluation of the government in power at the time, but this article excludes replies containing political commentary.

On the 5ch thread “Giants Acting Manager 183,” discussion continued around Oda, the Asia University pitcher the Giants are reportedly considering for their first-round draft pick. Oda has previously said, “I’m interested in Major League Baseball, but if I could be coached by someone with MLB experience, I wouldn’t rule out playing in NPB.” His comments sparked worry in the thread that he might end up refusing the Giants’ pick. The Giants have a history of passing on players like Daisuke Matsuzaka and Shohei Ohtani in the past, and the discussion expanded into wishful speculation that only a setup with manager Hideki Matsui, coach Hiroki Kuroda, and traveling coach Ichiro could win him over, as well as into the futures of Koji Uehara and Tomoyuki Sugano.

    It's shorter now

    Background and Key Points

It’s well known that the Giants have historically avoided drafting players seen as likely to refuse the pick, but actual cases of a player rejecting the Giants are extremely rare — the thread cites pitcher Kobayashi of Aichi Gakuin University in 1973 as apparently the only such case for the team. Asia University’s baseball team is known for its strict hierarchy, but the current manager is Shomura, formerly of Hachinohe Gakuin University, so how much of the old-school culture remains is unclear. The idea of a coaching staff built around manager Hideki Matsui, coach Hiroki Kuroda, and traveling coach Ichiro is purely wishful thinking from fans in the thread, not an official team announcement. Likewise, the talk about the futures of Koji Uehara and Tomoyuki Sugano is speculation, not anything either player has stated themselves.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Critical PHP vulnerability advisories are regularly published by IPA and PHP’s own developers, and WordPress sites that keep running outdated versions become increasingly attractive attack targets the longer they’re left unpatched. In practice, though, the actual update work often involves server migrations and compatibility adjustments for plugins and libraries, and migrating from versions before 8.0 in particular tends to require extensive fixes. The thread split over whether this job posting was “simple work” or a “minefield project,” pitting criticism of the low pay against the observation that a low budget is exactly what attracts only inexperienced applicants. Though not mentioned in the original article, it’s a well-known pitfall in freelance work that crowdsourcing-style listings mentioning “ongoing support welcome” often come with an implicit expectation of free continued support — a dynamic that likely fed into the thread’s reaction here.

  • Xbox Cloud Gaming Launch Pricing Starts at $3.99 for 10 Hours — 5ch Weighs In

Microsoft’s announced introductory pricing for Xbox Cloud Gaming is time-based: $3.99 for 10 hours, $7.99 for 25 hours, and $11.99 for 50 hours. On 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board, opinions split over whether this price is high — some argued it’s reasonable given that Xbox hardware itself costs over ¥100,000 in Japan, while others pointed out this is merely an “introductory launch price” and the real rate is bound to go up. The discussion also branched out into which cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP) each company actually uses.

¥130,000 is for the limited-edition XSX console.
XSX (with disc drive): ¥117,980 incl. tax (about ¥126,000 if converted from the USD price)
XSX (no disc drive): ¥109,980 incl. tax (about ¥118,000 if converted from the USD price)
    Both are region-free

The XSS is ¥97,480 incl. tax, so these days you might as well get the diskless XSX instead of an XSS
    Both are diskless anyway

You're usually the type to say disc-to-digital is pointless in Japan since discs barely get released here anyway, and now you're doing a total 180.
Even the disc model doesn't cost ¥130,000.

    Sony

    Microsoft

Has been selling diskless consoles since the Xbox One era

    Nintendo
Disc-free since the Wii U, using only pricey NAND flash
The burden on third parties got so heavy that game-card keys are becoming the norm instead

It's pricing designed just so they can say "usage is too low, we're shutting the service down."

If there are no users, they're the ones getting cut.
If users are increasing, then beef up the servers with that bottomless cloud money.
    71AnonymousOct 22, 2026 15:31
Say an Xbox console is $500 — at $12 per 50 hours of cloud gaming, you'd hit $500 after about 2,080 hours.
Though that's not counting electricity bills or controller costs.
    77AnonymousOct 22, 2026 15:46
    Re: #71
If you figure consoles will be a standard $1,000 going forward, that's double, 4,000 hours.
Someone with a regular job putting 4,000 hours into gaming would be pretty rare.
I'd think most ordinary people end up shifting to cloud.

It's like how going to the movies a few times a month is easier than building a full home theater,

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Xbox Cloud Gaming has adopted a pay-per-use system this time, charging based on hours played. As pointed out in the thread, this is an “introductory launch price,” and once the service is fully up and running, it could switch to a regular rate that’s higher. Since cloud streaming comes with ongoing server maintenance costs, the pricing appears to have been set up separately from the flat monthly Xbox Game Pass Ultimate fee. Also, since Xbox hardware itself costs over ¥100,000 in Japan, it may be premature to simply call the cloud pricing “expensive” based on the number alone — it also offers a way to play without buying a console at all. As for which cloud platform powers PlayStation’s streaming, guesses in the thread were split, but job listings that came up suggest AWS and GCP carry the bulk of the load, so the assumption that it’s Azure alone isn’t necessarily accurate.
