  • Japan Spends ¥65 Billion a Year on More Post Offices Than Elementary Schools — Consolidation a Topic ‘Too Scary to Even Mention’

An international comparison based on Universal Postal Union (UPU) and World Bank data has found that Japan’s post offices are packed roughly four times as densely, relative to land area, as those in the UK, Germany, and France, and about twice as densely as South Korea’s. As of the end of fiscal 2024, Japan had 23,466 operating post offices. The Asahi Shimbun reported on this uneven distribution and on how the political debate over consolidating post offices has become such a taboo that it’s “too scary to even bring up.” On 5ch, discussion ranged widely — from doubts about whether comparing post offices to elementary schools even makes sense, to the reality that post offices serve as a lifeline for elderly residents in depopulated areas, to the hereditary nature of local “special post offices” and the ties between the national postmasters’ association and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that keep consolidation from moving forward.

Calculating how densely post offices are packed into livable areas across the G7 nations plus South Korea (eight countries total), Japan stands out by far. Its density is roughly four times that of the UK, Germany, and France, and about twice that of South Korea. Behind this lies a uniquely Japanese circumstance: any discussion of consolidating post offices is treated almost like a taboo.

The comparison was calculated by dividing each country’s number of post offices by its land area, using data from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the World Bank.

According to the UPU’s most recent report, Japan has 23,466 post offices (as of the end of fiscal 2024, operating locations only). That works out to 64 post offices per 1,000 square kilometers of land area — the highest figure among the eight countries.

Some of these post offices are hereditary, aren't they?
I wonder if it's tied to who owns the land and building rights.

I like leisurely cruising on so-called "terrible roads" and "dangerous roads" (kokudō/kendō — nicknames for national and prefectural routes so rough they're joked about) and forestry roads,
and post offices reach every last mountain hamlet, all the way to the edges of nowhere.
"Simple post offices," I think they're called? A lot of them are run like little private general stores.
But in truly dying villages, a lot of the post offices have been closed down or suspended.
Schools are shutting down too, which is kind of depressing to see.
    30AnonymousOct 22, 2026 08:10
Even if there are a lot, isn't it mostly the "simple post offices" Re: #22 mentioned?

    24AnonymousOct 22, 2026 08:06
Back in the day, convenience stores, delivery companies, and financial institutions weren't nearly as widespread as they are now, but today all of them are oversaturated.
On top of that, with everything going digital, postcards and New Year's cards are declining, so of course post offices feel like there are too many.

We're in an era of population decline — just keep consolidating them.

The National Association of Postmasters — the group representing the old "special post offices" (now called "area management offices") — backs the LDP, so if the party pushed for consolidation, it would lose votes.
    48AnonymousOct 22, 2026 08:25
This might just be lip service, but even lawmakers backed by the postmasters' association are saying consolidation is necessary. It's strange that the number has barely dropped since privatization. If an ATM is needed, just subsidize putting one in the town hall.

Even depopulated areas need financial services.

Are you saying just use an app? In the countryside, when the nearby post office shuts down,
there are a lot of elderly people for whom even walking there is a struggle.

What about updating your passbook, huh? Megabanks are never going to move into places that aren't profitable.

In the countryside, bank branches keep pulling out and getting farther from home,
and on top of that there's been on-and-off talk of restricting elderly people's ATM use.
So I'd at least like the post office to stay close by — ironic as that catch is.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The uneven density of post offices traces back to the 2007 privatization of Japan Post, which converted it into a joint-stock company — but since the government still holds a majority of its shares, “full privatization” was never actually completed. Many of the so-called “special post offices” (now called “area management offices”) have been run for generations by prominent local families dating back to the Meiji era, and the group representing their operators, the National Association of Postmasters, is known as a powerful support base for the LDP — a structure that, as commenters pointed out, makes any push toward consolidation politically costly at election time. At the same time, in depopulated areas the post office is effectively the only financial access point left, making it a challenge to balance efficiency with public service. Commenters also raised plenty of doubts about how the original article framed its numbers — questioning the comparison to elementary schools itself, and noting that the scale of the image comparisons wasn’t consistent across countries — so the discussion went well beyond a simple “too many vs. too few” debate.

  • NHK’s Overdose Special Sparks Controversy Over Unblurred Footage — 5ch: ‘If You Blur It, How Would Anyone Know What’s Dangerous?’

The NHK Special “Overdose: Over-the-Counter Drug Abuse — How Do We Protect Young People’s Lives?”, which aired on October 18, is stirring controversy. A former NHK news producer pointed out that despite the sensitive subject matter, the program showed a lack of consideration — specifically, it aired footage of the over-the-counter medications in question without blurring them. On 5ch, opinions are clashing: some argue that “if you blur it out, you can’t convey what’s actually dangerous,” while others worry that “if clips of the show spread on social media, they’ll reach kids who don’t even watch broadcast TV.” The thread also brought up how, in the past, NHK specials on Winny (a file-sharing app) and in-game real-money trading (RMT) ended up making those very things more widely known — reviving debate over the relationship between reporting and the spread of information.

    That's an out-of-place artifact (OOPArt).

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Overdosing on over-the-counter medication has become a social problem spreading among young people, driven by abuse of ingredients like ephedrine and cough suppressants found in cough syrups and multi-symptom cold medicines; in recent years, sales restrictions limiting how many units a single customer can buy have been tightening. What made the program controversial was that it aired footage of the OTC medications in question without blurring them, and that naming prescription drugs like Depas (etizolam) — now banned from online purchase following a legal change — jogged viewers’ memories. In the thread, a defense that “blurring it wouldn’t convey the danger” clashed with concerns that “clipped videos spreading on social media would reach kids who don’t even watch broadcast TV,” with commenters citing past cases where NHK specials on Winny and RMT ended up spreading those very things instead. This highlights a dilemma common to sensational reporting on social problems: the warning a report means to convey versus the side effect of the information itself spreading.

  • Pushback Against ‘Cheap Android Is Enough’ — 5ch Says ‘iPhone Specs Are Actually Low’

A thread titled “Cheap Android is enough, you don’t need iPhone-level performance” went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (general live-discussion board), and it quickly drew pushback along the lines of “No way, iPhone specs are actually low.” The debate went beyond simple price or processing-speed comparisons, zeroing in on standard Android features the iPhone lacks — split-screen display, scrolling screenshots, and fully automatic call recording. It then spiraled into arguments over the Galaxy-vs-iPhone global market-share race and who really pioneered the foldable phone, turning into a mix of brand loyalty and practical feature debates.

Background and key points of this discussion

“Performance” on a smartphone technically refers to CPU/GPU processing power, but in this thread it’s being used almost interchangeably with OS-level feature gaps — things like split-screen display, scrolling screenshots, and automatic call recording — so the discussion talks past itself. In reality, Apple’s own chips in the iPhone rank near the top in many general-purpose benchmarks, so the claim that “performance is low” is, strictly speaking, closer to pointing at missing features than at raw processing power. As for global market share, the race for first place between Samsung and Apple flips depending on the quarter and which research firm you ask, so which one is “solely in first” changes over time — the thread’s blanket statements shouldn’t be taken as settled fact. The same goes for who pioneered the foldable phone: multiple manufacturers, including Royole, Huawei, and Samsung, released similar products around the same time, so the definition of “first” varies depending on who you ask.

*This article is composed of excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “You guys: ‘Cheap Android is enough, you don’t need iPhone-level performance’ ← No way, iPhone specs are actually low.”

  • PHP Vulnerability Takes Down Sites Worldwide — 5ch: “A Hijacked Site Is Like an Abandoned House Turned into a Hangout Den”

A vulnerability has been discovered in PHP, the programming language said to power roughly 70% of the world’s websites, causing numerous sites — including government agency pages and Wikipedia — to go temporarily offline in various countries on the 22nd. The outages are an emergency measure while the patch is rolled out, and governments worldwide are urging swift action to prevent data leaks. On 5ch, opinions split between shutting every site down at once versus patching in rotation, and the thread also lit up with down-to-earth analogies explaining how hijacked sites get turned into attack “stepping stones.”

[Washington, Brussels — Jiji] Following the discovery of a vulnerability in the programming language PHP, government agency websites and others went offline one after another across countries worldwide as they awaited updates. The fallout from the crisis spread rapidly, given that the software is used by an estimated 70% of the world’s websites. Governments around the world called for urgent action to prevent data leaks and other damage.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

PHP is widely used as the foundation for building websites around the world, including WordPress, and this vulnerability is said to potentially affect not just one specific feature but many sites that run on PHP in general. The thread’s buzz over reports that “OpenAI’s AI discovered the vulnerability” points to an era where AI can find holes before attackers do — but there are also warnings that AI is starting to be used for indiscriminate malicious scanning as well, suggesting both defense and offense are advancing in parallel with AI. There was also criticism toward the person who published vulnerability details on X (formerly Twitter) before the official announcement — a case that clashes with the security industry’s emphasis on “responsible disclosure.” As for the all-at-once shutdown response, some argued sites could simply be maintained in rotation instead, but since attackers move en masse to target weak points before patches land, handling it piecemeal risks falling behind.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[PHP Vulnerability Discovered] Website Outages Hit Countries Worldwide — Government Agencies, Wikipedia Included — Calls for “Urgent Response”.”

  • No Refunds Allowed: Gamers Commiserate Over Realizing Their Digital Game Is Garbage Minutes After Buying It

A thread titled “The despair of buying a digital game at full price and immediately realizing it’s garbage” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board. With a physical copy, you can resell it secondhand or return it if it doesn’t click, but digital downloads offer almost none of those options — meaning regret is locked in the moment you hit “buy.” That structural problem became the thread’s main talking point. Posters shared their own “garbage game” horror stories, from shock at a ¥13,900 price tag to someone who gave up on Diablo III after just three hours. The discussion also touched on rumors that the PS5 will go fully digital-only starting in 2028, with some arguing consoles badly need a Steam-style refund system, and others noting that subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass limit the downside.

No — if you end up feeling "something about this doesn't click, it's not worth my time," then it's garbage to you personally, regardless of its reputation. Of course the opposite can happen too.

The plane sections force you to use motion controls,
you can't freely explore Wuhu Island (or whatever it's called here) — there's some bizarre 5-minute limit — and even then the controls are motion-sensor flying in the air, while on the ground it's nothing but a skateboard that forces mouse controls.
Can someone let me return this? I've probably played less than 30 minutes total. I only did the 5-minute free-roam twice.
No idea if a real free-roam exploration mode gets unlocked later or not.

Sure, physical products can't go back on the shelf once the package is opened, but that's not really true for digital downloads.
If a company's attitude toward refusing returns is basically "Ha, too bad you didn't check the trailers or official info, tech-illiterate loser — no refunds now, lol, thanks for the full price, lol," that's just not an honest way to do business.

Well, PlayStation's mostly just free-to-play games these days, so maybe this doesn't even matter lol

    Background and Key Points

Home consoles’ digital download versions generally lack a Steam-style system that lets you get a refund if your playtime is short and it’s within a certain window after purchase. While physical copies offer an effective fallback — reselling them secondhand if they don’t suit you — digital versions mean regret is essentially locked in the moment of purchase. That structural issue was the point repeatedly raised throughout the thread. The claim mentioned in the thread that “the PS5 will switch to fully digital-only starting in 2028” is only a statement made on 5ch, and it should be noted that it has not been confirmed as an official Sony announcement. Also, since what counts as a “garbage game” depends heavily on individual taste, much of the discussion centered on the gap between a title’s broad critical reputation and one’s own personal satisfaction with it.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry/Geha) thread “The despair of buying a digital game at full price and immediately realizing it’s garbage.”

  • Aston Villa Climb to Top of Champions League with Third Straight Win as GK Zion Suzuki Shines

In Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League league phase, Aston Villa faced Norway’s Viking FK and won 3-1. Japan national team goalkeeper Zion Suzuki started and played the full match, contributing to the win with precise long feeds and key saves. With their third straight win to open the campaign, Aston Villa moved to 9 points and the top of the league phase table. On 5ch, many praised Suzuki’s kicking accuracy and the team’s strong form, while others offered sharper takes — noting that goalkeepers tend to be more or less guaranteed playing time, questioning the strength of the opposition, and drawing comparisons with other Japanese players active in Europe.

That just shows that, historically, Japan's attacking players — unlike Son Heung-min — are at a level where it's not even certain they'd start in the Premier League.

On top of that, Japanese players lack the physicality and get injured way more than Son Heung-min does.

It's pretty pathetic for Japan that the one position you can reliably count on seeing in the starting lineup is goalkeeper —
and not even at a top club at that.

    Nah, Bayern's just weak.

Watching this morning's Viking match, I didn't think they looked strong either —
Zion barely even showed up on screen.

That said, Zion doesn't have that many clean sheets either, does he?

It's still early in the league and the CL, but if this is how it's going,
the outlook for Aston Villa isn't exactly bright.

Well, Zion probably still doesn't fully know his defenders yet either,
so it'll take a bit more time before he really becomes worth watching.

The question is what Aston Villa's results look like by then.

That's because Japan's die-hard soccer fanboys ("saka-buta" — a mocking term for obsessive soccer fans) are more fixated on Korea than on Japan itself.

    Background and Talking Points

Starting with the 2024-25 season, the Champions League scrapped the group stage in favor of a “league phase” format, in which 36 clubs play a round-robin schedule to decide who advances. This win puts Aston Villa at 3 wins from 3 and 9 points, significantly boosting their chances of progressing. Opinion on the thread was split over how much credit Suzuki deserves: supporters pointed to the quality of his long feeds and saves, while more cautious posters — citing Viking’s level and comparisons with other Japanese players active in Europe at the same time — warned against getting ahead of themselves. It’s also worth noting, as backdrop to the debate, that goalkeepers are inherently more likely to be guaranteed playing time given the nature of the position.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geisoku+) thread “[Soccer] European CL: Aston Villa wins 3 straight & rises to 2nd — GK Zion Suzuki (Japan NT) makes his presence felt with great saves & long passes, beats Viking 3-1.”

  • “The One Game Nobody Looted in France” — Photo Now Suspected to Be Faked

During riots in France, game shops were ransacked and merchandise was looted one item after another — but a photo claiming “this was the only title nobody took” went viral on social media, and it became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha). The post reportedly racked up over 160,000 likes, but the thread didn’t end as a simple joke about the game just being unpopular. Same as in sports photography these days — you shoot video first and pull a still frame from it afterward
It's not like this is a landscape photo

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In French-speaking regions, age ratings use the PEGI system, while the US uses ESRB — the standards differ, and so does the display format on game packaging. What the thread picked up on was that the rating display shown in the viral photo looks like the US format rather than the French one, which casts doubt on the very premise that this was “a real photo taken on location.” On top of that, some pointed out that the composition — clearly catching the exact moment of impact against the glass — looks unnatural for a news photo snapped in the heat of the moment, raising the possibility that it could be a still frame pulled from video, or even an AI-generated image, leaving the truth divided. What readers might easily misunderstand is that the catchy claim “only this one game escaped the looting” tends to spread as if it were established fact, when the thread’s real focus was actually the question of whether this even happened at all.

*This article is composed as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] Looks Like Only One Game Wasn’t Looted at a French Game Shop.”

  • Japan’s GDP Was Once Nearly on Par With America’s — Now It’s Set to Fall to 6th Place

There was a time when Japan’s GDP grew to a scale that nearly rivaled America’s, but it has since lost momentum. The IMF’s 2026 forecast puts Japan at 4th place worldwide, and by 2027 it’s projected to be overtaken by both India and the UK, dropping to 6th. On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live News General) board, posters pointed to causes like Japanese-style management that avoided price hikes by suppressing labor costs, falling working hours, and the effect of the weak yen when converted to dollars — with the thread split over which factor was really the root cause.

    ↓

The mistaken value of "selling for even one yen cheaper is for the customers' sake" spread everywhere, and Japanese companies threw themselves into management that achieved low prices by holding down "labor costs" — meaning workers' wages.

The public bought into "cheaper is always better" too, and we all ended up strangling each other, keeping up a society for over 30 years where working people's wages never rise.

    1. Passing rising raw-material costs, etc. on to prices
    +
    2. Passing rising worker wages (labor costs) on to prices

    ↑
Japanese companies went all in on holding down #2's cost, working to keep prices low and price hikes to a minimum.
So prices stayed cheap and stable for a long time — but was that actually good?
It wasn't, that's exactly why we got the Lost 30 Years.

    62AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:20
Take something as simple as the cost of lunch — in Western developed countries it's already an era of $20 to $35 (3,000 to 5,000 yen), while Japan is still a cheap country stuck at $6 (1,000 yen).

It's the exact same labor — making and serving lunch — so there's no way pay for the people doing that work ends up at the same level between a country that pays $35 and Japan, which pays only $6. There's no way economic growth ends up the same either.
    68AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:25
    Re: #62
That's because we had 30 years of deflation. But even converted to dollars, Japan is still asset-rich. France, meanwhile, has no assets and keeps borrowing anyway, which is why it's at risk of default.

    83AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:35
The price of goods and services is also the "compensation" for the labor workers put in. If that compensation stays cheap and prices can barely be raised, there's no way workers' wages are ever going to rise.

When workers' wages go up, the cost called labor costs increases, so prices go up too. Yet people refuse to tolerate rising prices while asking "why don't wages rise" or "why hasn't the economy grown" — honestly, you have to wonder what they're even saying.

That's weird, isn't it — they call a weak currency a "beggar-thy-neighbor" policy, yet our economic neighbors in East Asia and the US are growing like crazy while our country alone is losing.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under the IMF’s 2026 forecast, Japan’s nominal GDP ranks just behind Germany and the UK, with a projected fall to 6th place worldwide by 2027 as it’s overtaken by both India and the UK. That said, dollar-denominated GDP is heavily affected by exchange rates — a detail that’s easy to miss — meaning the ranking can shift even with an unchanged real economy depending on whether the rate is around ¥80 to the dollar, as it once was, or around ¥160, as it is now. In the thread, one camp argued that Japanese companies’ management style of avoiding price hikes by holding down labor costs caused wage stagnation, while another camp emphasized the structural factor of a shrinking workforce. Many posts, however, blurred the line between the technical factor of the weak yen and genuine stagnation in the real economy, showing just how hard it is to pin Japan’s “decline” on a single cause.

What made it great was that his 127th G1 attempt finally paid off — and he beat out Take-san, who himself has 127 G1 wins. That coincidence was kind of moving.

    Re: #65
G1 wins aside, he's got over 1,000 career wins and 50 more this year alone, plus plenty of prize money. If that counts as 'fizzling out,' what do you even call jockeys who win less than Miura?
    74AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:38
Kato Cha's marriage and Hoshino Aki's marriage are both surprisingly rare cases of age-gap couples that have actually lasted. (Kato Cha = veteran comedian known for marrying someone decades younger)

When the guy's older, it seems to last more often, in my impression.

Some athletes are the type who only stay stable with a wife 10+ years older. Must be a mental thing.

    Re: #82
Athletes tend to be kind of childish on the inside, so an older wife suits them better.

    Background and Talking Points

Jockey Kosei Miura made his debut in 2008, and his rookie-year performance was so extraordinary that he earned the nickname ‘the second coming of Yutaka Take.’ Surprisingly, though, he didn’t win his first JRA G1 race until last year — his 18th year as a professional — which led some in the thread to call him a disappointment. That framing can be misleading: he’s a genuinely strong rider with over 1,000 career wins and around 50 wins again this year, so conflating his long G1 drought with his overall record risks giving the wrong impression. His marriage to Hoshino Aki spans a 13-year age gap; since the wedding took place 15 years ago, Miura would have been in his early 20s around the time of his debut, making the pairing of a celebrity and a young jockey an unusual combination. The thread also traded general theories about age-gap marriage compatibility and divorce risk among athlete/celebrity couples, but none of it amounted to evidence-based analysis — beyond the couple’s own Instagram posts, nothing further is actually known about their relationship.

  • Exhausted by Office Drama, 5ch’s Lunchtime Thread Turns to Lunch Bragging: ‘Draw Eyes on Your Eyelids, It Works’

In a “noon thread” that popped up around midday on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board, the thread starter wrote that they were sick of constantly fielding relationship advice at work. From there the conversation drifted into everyone reporting on their lunch — a debate broke out over whether to top leftover stuffed peppers with ketchup or a sauce made from pan drippings, followed by a run of lunch bragging: convenience-store salad pasta, kiwifruit, sweet potato potato salad, and sour bread with a cheap minced-meat cutlet. Someone claimed homemade curry is fine three days running, and one poster offered the odd trick of drawing eyes on your eyelids to fight off drowsiness — the chatter rolled on for the whole lunch break.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “noon thread” is a staple idle-chat thread that pops up on the VIP board around midday, long run in a format hosted by an AA (text-art) mascot character named Nao. Rather than covering any actual news, it’s built entirely around the VIP board’s own rhythm — people on a break from work swapping reports on their lunch and how they’re doing. The thread starter’s opening gripe about being “tired of relationship advice” isn’t tied to any specific incident; it’s just an entry point for venting the day’s small stresses through casual chatter. Readers should note that the menus and antics mentioned here (eating curry three days straight, drawing eyes on your eyelids, etc.) aren’t verifiable facts — they’re meant to be enjoyed as in-the-moment banter, not taken as practical advice.
